    TomTom to Cut Jobs, Aims to Speed Product Launches

    AMSTERDAM—Navigation equipment maker TomTom NV Thursday detailed plans to cut costs, including shedding around 10% of its global work force and reorganizing its research and development, aiming to reduce the time it takes to launch new products.

    TomTom, which is trying to offset a slump in sales from personal navigation devices, or PNDs, by cutting costs and boosting sales of other products and services, said it will cut 457 jobs, 255 of which will be redundancies, from a total work force of about 4,000.

    TomTom said it will also reorganize its centralized R&D activities into 10 product units to improve its return on investment and increase the control its sales force has over what is being developed based on customer feedback, a spokesman said.

    To achieve the previously-announced €50 million ($66 million) in annual savings, TomTom, which competes with Cayman Islands-based Garmin Ltd., will take a €14 million charge in the fourth quarter, mainly related to the job cuts.

    The company has faced a mounting challenge from free navigation and other location-based services on smartphones, and has shifted focus to higher-margin add-on services such as live traffic updates. It also pushed to grow in the in-car navigation segment, striking deals with several large car makers.

    But it has continued to struggle.

    When TomTom was listed in 2005 it was valued at close to €2 billion, but shares hit an all time high of €70 at the end of 2007, but spiralled downwards as it overstretched its balance sheet when it bought digital map-maker Tele Atlas in 2007 for €2.9 billion.

    In 2012, the company's operating expenses should decline by about €35 million from this year's estimated €540 million, it said Thursday. Capital expenditure is expected to drop by about €15 million in 2012, compared to guidance of €80 million in 2011.

    TomTom Chief Executive Harold Goddijn recently said he doesn't expect the decline in PND sales to accelerate next year, after a 19% decline on an annual basis in the third quarter, but he said much would depend on fourth-quarter sales figures, which are crucial for consumer electronics because of the Christmas holiday shopping season.

    TomTom's restructuring comes as no surprise and the €14 million charge is relatively low, said Hans Slob at Rabobank, adding he expects the company to target flat earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or Ebitda, for 2012 compared to his estimate of €236 million for 2011 and €299 million in 2010.

    In principe is voor TomTom zelf het verschil niet zo groot. Alleen de hardware is wat anders (een groter scherm) en je werkt met apps. Zoals nu ook al stapsgewijs met de pnd gebeurt.

    Maar voor de consument VOELT het wel als een groot verschil. Een tablet ziet hij als een slim apparaat en een pnd als een dom apparaat. Er zijn genoeg mensen die niet weten dat een live-pnd een internetverbinding heeft. Terwijl men dat bij een tablet logisch vindt.

    Een tomtom tablet met apps zou daarom een MOVE met hoofdletters zijn.

    Door deze tablet eerst samen met Renault te ontwikkelen hebben ze al ervaring met Android, ervaring met een appstore ontwikkelen etc. Mogelijk zijn zelfs de ontwikkelkosten gedeeld. Zo slim zijn ze tegenwoordig wel. Net zoals de Mazda inbouw samen met Sanyo wordt gedaan en het sporthorloge met Nike.

    Ik denk dat TomTom de volledige ontwikkelkosten van de tablet heeft gedragen... (Het is al fijn genoeg dat ze er direct een afnemer voor hebben)

    Wat apart is, is dat men had aangekondigd om vorig jaar al met een appstore uit te komen. Dit is tot op heden vertraagd. Het lijkt er op dat dit gekomen is doordat men ervoor gekozen heeft om de ontwikkeling voort te zetten op het Android platform......

    Zou goed kunnen Joris.

    Wat ook zou kunnen is dat ze ingebouwde tablets wilden maken. Bijvoorbeeld: in de Renault tablet komt een app in waarin je e-mail kunt lezen als de motor af staat. Als de motor aan staat kan je alleen laten voorlezen.

    Misschien om te voorkomen dat ze met wetgeving te maken krijgen? De eerste de beste keer dat iemand zich op een boom te pletter rijdt,omdat ie met zijn tablet zit te spelen en het wordt verboden in de auto. Of je hebt PR-schade.

    Kijk maar hieronder dat hier onder andere in de VS best wat aandacht voor is. Het is dus belangrijk dat navigatie buiten de aandacht van de wettenmakers blijft. Het maken van een 'normale' tablet zou onder de noemer "texting while driving" kunnen vallen.

    In Florida, a proposed bill known as "Heather's Law" would ban all cell phone use while driving. The law was inspired by the death of Heather Hurd, who was killed in an accident allegedly caused by a truck driver who crashed into 10 cars when he was sending a text message behind the wheel.[26]

    On October 1, 2009, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced President Barack Obama's signing of an Executive Order directing federal employees not to engage in text messaging while driving government-owned vehicles, among other activities.[27] According to Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood, “This order sends a very clear signal to the American public that distracted driving is dangerous and unacceptable. It shows that the federal government is leading by example." As a part of a larger move to combat distracted driving, the DOT and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched the public information website distraction.gov.[28]

    On January 26, 2010, the US Department of Transportation announced a federal ban on texting while driving by truckers and bus drivers.[29]

    dit is zeer duidelijk vandaar ook omswitchen van pure navi naar meer en meer software aanbieder in de breedste zin v/h woord (mijn hoop)

    @beeldscherm Heb hierover mijn twijfels, door de enorme kosten van teleatlas, zou het voornaamste speerpunt moeten zijn, om de waarde van teleatlas te 'unlocken' en dan kom je toch weer op de navigatie, location base advertisement uit. Echter dit kan tomtom niet alleen.

    Tot Goddijn dit gaat inzien, blijven we dalen verwacht ik.

    En aangezien Goddijn zijn zakken vol heeft, en totaal geen aandacht heeft voor de andere shareholders van de onderneming, kan dit een lang traject worden

It is owned by London-based Berendsen Plc, which employs more than 16,000 people and occupies a leading position in most of the 15 countries in which it operates.

    The decision to invest in Transvision Route Planner came after a very successful test simulation which proved that there were substantial savings to be made by implementing the system. This was the main reason for choosing Transvision Route Planner, but the system’s outstanding ability to make realistic, drivable routes also played an important part.

    The system is used for cyclical master route planning and for making adjustments to the routes, which are sent to TomTom Work for the drivers to execute. Transvision has designed a data bridge module which ensures that route data from Transvision Route Planner is converted into the right format and exported efficiently to TomTom Work. This results in seamless integration between the two systems, thereby allowing the drivers to access all relevant data on their onboard computers.

    When creating the routes, Transvision Route Planner plans according to visit patterns, capacity constraints, time windows and various other parameters in order to help Berendsen find the optimal service days while respecting necessary restrictions. The final route plans are normally sent to the drivers on the day before execution, but it is also possible to send them several days in advance or to make changes to the routes on the actual day of execution. In this way, the system allows for great flexibility.

    Transvision Route Planner has currently been implemented in part of Berendsen’s organisation and will gradually be rolled out to all of the company’s divisions and vehicles

    Waar ik graag meer van zou zien is het los licenseren van content zoals HD traffic.

    We hebben daar tot nu toe HEEL WEINIG van gezien. Een campusje dat toegang krijgt en wat radiostations:

    Is wachten op de eerstvolgende grote content deal. Dat zou verlichting geven, zeker gezien de marges. Bijvoorbeeld niet een deal met een Nederlandse gemeente, maar bijvoorbeeld met de stad New York. Iets wat tot de verbeelding spreekt en ook de fantasie in het aandeel weer wat terugbrengt.
