But TomTom Australia managing director Chris Kearney says he expects Australians to buy more than one million of the company's navigators this year, due in part to its new HD Traffic service. Gear up for the cars of the future by: Jennifer Dudley-Nicholson From: National Features November 15, 2011 11:30PM Increase Text SizeDecrease Text SizePrintEmail Share Add to DiggAdd to del.icio.usAdd to FacebookAdd to KwoffAdd to MyspaceAdd to NewsvineWhat are these? A view of the future: This example of an in-car head-up display for road safety could be the norm in a few years. Source: Supplied THINK of cars as a method of transport? Think again. In as little as four years they could be considered "the ultimate mobile device" - connected to the internet, able to locate destinations and designed to talk to other cars to prevent accidents. And experts predict that by 2030 most Australian cars will feature technology commonly seen in jet fighters and robots - additions that will dramatically decrease road deaths. The technology could see cars hit the brakes to avoid a hazard, choose music to suit the driver's mood or identify pedestrians by body heat. Some of these advances are creeping into our vehicles, from technology that monitors driver fatigue to speed warnings projected on the windscreen and, in its most accessible form, GPS devices that warn of traffic snarls. Fresh in-car technology forecasts emerged last week when Siemens launched its Picture of the Future: Australia 2030 study. Research head Chris Vains says Australia has the potential to have the safest roads in the world by 2030 if carmakers and drivers embrace emerging technology. Start of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar. High-end European cars, for example, already feature head-up displays once only seen in jet fighters. These additions project a car's speed, engine and map information on to the windscreen, he says, but they could be used for more in future, identifying road issues. "It's more than just telling you where you are on a map - it will also tell you if you're near hazards or if you are speeding. "Where we see it going in the next five years is that it will be implemented in most cars and the cars that use them will be able to take over and bring down the speed if necessary," he says. Road safety could be further enhanced once cars were equipped with sensors to send messages to other vehicles around them - something due by 2030, Vains says. "What we're talking about here is information that can be passed between cars," he says. "If you're driving behind another vehicle and a dog runs out in front of that car, for example, a built-in controller could take over and brake for you." While researching the study, Vains says he discovered the Federal Government had already reserved radio bandwidth for sending traffic warnings to road users. Gartner automotive industry analyst Thilo Koslowski says the ability for cars to communicate with road infrastructure could prevent accidents and improve traffic flow. "Imagine your stop-light communicating with you based on where you are and what is behind you," he says. "It could tell you to slow down rather than coming to a complete stop so you can drive through an intersection." In order to receive these messages or look up destinations, cars would need to be connected to the internet - something Koslowski says is being investigated by the automotive and phone industries. "The car is really the ultimate mobile device. You're really mobile in your car, more than when you're just walking around with your phone, and that offers unique opportunities," he says. "By 2016 most consumers in mature markets like Australia will start to expect these features." Cars will also be granted the power to operate autonomously, Koslowski says, changing radio stations when it senses signs of driver aggravation or fatigue and potentially monitoring a vehicle's speed. Many of these advances threatened traditional in-car GPS devices, already under attack from smartphone apps. But TomTom Australia managing director Chris Kearney says he expects Australians to buy more than one million of the company's navigators this year, due in part to its new HD Traffic service.

Kerst 2012?

New tactic to keep traffic flowing MATTHEW CAMPBELL Last updated 08:17 18/11/2011SharePrint Text Size Relevant offersThe latest weapon in the war against Sydney peak-hour traffic congestion is a fleet of "probe" vehicles that can warn road users of delays. The vehicles, often hire cars, taxis or delivery vans, can relay their speed and location via satellite to a central hub that sends traffic warnings to motorists within 30 seconds. The system, developed by the traffic data company Intelematics, can tell drivers the traffic flow on any given road at any given time. The company claims it is far more accurate than current traffic warnings which rely on historical travel times for roads and information sourced from traffic lights and road cameras. Dubbed Suna 3, the system will allow more than 4 million satnav users across Australia to be kept informed of unexpected delays. Intelematics' chief executive, Adam Game, said the data would override any other information if the situation seemed unusual. "Traffic information in the cities is as much about providing people comfort - telling the driver that the traffic is no worse than normal - but also giving them an insight when it really is worse than normal and letting them know they have to do something about it," Game said. He said traffic information was "increasingly becoming a consumer expectation" rather than just a desire. He predicted that by 2013, 50 per cent of cars sold would be fitted with satnav. Intelematics' traffic data is currently available across handheld satnavs from Garmin and Navman, several smartphone applications, and many in-car systems from Toyota, Subaru, Mitsubishi, Holden and Ford. TomTom is one of the major navigation brands that does not use data from Intelematics. Its system, known as HD Traffic, releases nationwide updates every two minutes. Intelematics is also working on a more advanced network that will inform drivers of car parking availability. "There are figures that suggest something like 60 per cent of traffic in a CBD area is actually people circling looking for parking spaces," Game said. TomTom Launches the PRO 7150 TRUCK for Automatic Truck Routing and Nav November 17, 2011 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TomTom Business Solutions, the division dedicated to commercial fleets, today unveiled the TomTom PRO 7150 TRUCK. Designed to provide truck drivers and fleet managers with automated routing that takes into account vehicle profiles and road attributes and restrictions, the PRO 7150 saves time and money by ensuring that each trip is optimized and takes advantage of TomTom’s extensive map and traffic data. With the PRO 7150 TRUCK, drivers will enjoy a navigation experience that automatically favors main roads over secondary roads, avoids sharp turns and U-turns, and includes a comprehensive collection of truck attributes such as weight and dimension limitations to avoid low-bridge clearances, and load characteristics such as HAZMAT restrictions. Safety-focused features include road restriction and dead-end warnings that automatically pop up when drivers are about to encounter danger; advanced lane guidance to easily maneuver difficult intersections; hands-free dialing; and a clear 5-inch capacitive touch-screen to keep drivers relaxed and to minimize in-cab distraction, TomTom said. TomTom has partnered with ProMiles, an industry leader in transportation solutions, to deliver comprehensive map attributes for commercial vehicles in the North American market. “ProMiles’ industry-leading commercial transportation data enhances the TomTom PRO 7150 TRUCK resulting in 17 times more last-mile commercial vehicle coverage,” said Michael Geffroy, vice president of Sales, North America, for TomTom Business Solutions. “Due to the complexities of commercial vehicle regulations and road restrictions, it is critical to collaborate with a partner that has a long-standing expertise on trucking.” PRO 7150 TRUCK includes nationwide map coverage of national and state/provincial highways in the U.S. and Canada, including last-mile restriction coverage in most major truck-relevant municipalities. The database contains more than seven million points of interest. As part of the TomTom WORKsmart solution, the PRO 7150 TRUCK offers connectivity to enable easy fleet management and access to TomTom LIVE services. WORKsmart functionality includes vehicle tracking, job dispatching, time management, eco driving, IFTA fuel tax reporting interface via ProMiles, and management reporting via a TomTom WEBFLEET subscription. TomTom LIVE Services give the professional driver access to speed cameras, fuel prices, local search powered by Google, TomTom Weather, and TomTom HD Traffic.

Update: Opnieuw tientallen miljarden netto bedrijfswinsten UPDATE 17 november - Opnieuw publiceren ondernemingen miljarden nettowinsten.
