Fully 3D Printed Stainless Steel Tower Tresse in South of France

Working with artist Riccardo Ragazzoni, MX3D began working on the Tresse project in 2020. This fully 3D printed stainless steel sculpture has now been placed in a private garden in the South of France. In his search for a manufacturing partner, Ragazzoni went to Italy and approached several companies that were using traditional techniques, such as bronze casting or cut metal. However, these techniques did not fit with the artist’s vision as he searched for new innovative ways to produce his 4-meter tall steel sculpture. The final Tresse project has been fully 3D printed in stainless steel while the tips were polished and gold-plated in post-production.

With over 10.000 kg of metal 3D printed objects since 2014, MX3D brought large-scale robotic wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) and its market to life, enabling metal 3D printing to be more flexible, faster, and affordable. Now, the Dutch company is ready to transform the market further by launching the first dedicated robotic WAAM software enabling companies, engineers, and designers to print end-to-end large-scale 3D metal objects in-house.Tresse project

MX3D’s Robotic Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) technique allows higher form flexibility in shapes and textures and leads to significant material reduction. This process allows creating geometries with higher complexity than conventional manufacturing processes (such as CNC-milling, cast) and a higher speed and cost-efficiency compared to powder-based metal AM processes. By controlling the full WAAM workflow from CAD to print, MX3D’s technology has many benefits and allows you to go from idea to finished product in one go with MetalXL.

Association Denies Steel Price Agreement with Brazil Government

After Brazilian Economy Minister Mr Paulo Guedes announced that Brazilian steelmakers had pledged not to raise steel prices until the end of the year, Brazil’s Steel Association Aço Brasil denied that the sector has made agreements in this regard, even if informally. Aço Brasil's president Mr Marco Pollo de Mello Lopes in an interview with Valor Econômico newspaper said July 15 that “Mr Guedes suggested a price lock due to fear of inflationary pressures and complaints from the civil construction sector. Due to compliance, competition and trade policies specific to each company, we could not sign this commitment. During the meetings with the minister it was mentioned that rising raw materials costs such as iron ore, scrap and met coal were the reason for the adjustments in steel prices in Brazil and in the world but have now showed some signs of stabilization. Steel supply in Brazil has balanced, with higher availability from local mills and a strong increase in imports. Brazilian steelmakers are operating near 75% of installed capacity and reducing exports.”

Valor Econômico newspaper report quoted Mr Guedes as saying that he was trying to reduce the imports tariff over certain undisclosed steel products to help several industry segments in Brazil. The minister said he would like to make this cut tomorrow but that some Mercosur ties would delay what he considered ideal, which would be a generalized drop in tariffs in the country, not just for steel. He added “An attempt to reduce the tariff from 12% to 10.8% for steel was blocked by Argentina.”

Year to date the Brazilian domestic rebar price has risen 37% and has increased 154% in the past 12 months

Yaoyi Stainless Invests in Bright Annealing Furnace Line

China’s Southeast Coast based Yaoyi Stainless Steel has spent more than USD 150,000 to renovate the Bright Annealing Furnace line, which greatly improved the elongation, surface and mechanical properties of cold-rolled stainless steel coils.

With 25 years of experience in the producing cold rolled stainless steel coils, Yaoyi mainly produces cold-rolled stainless steel strips such as 201, 301, 304, 304L, and 316. Among the 200, 300, and 400 series of stainless steels, 301 is the steel that is most likely to be strengthened by cold deformation, and has excellent rust resistance under atmospheric conditions, so it is suitable for applications that bear higher loads, light weight, and do not rust. In addition, 301 is prone to work hardening when impacted by an external force, thereby absorbing more impact energy and providing higher safety guarantee for the equipment and production personnel.

Russian Quintessential, Suspended Pipe House Designed

Design Boom reported that designer Mr Sergey Kuznetsov has teamed up with KROST to design Russian Quintessential, a suspended pipe-like residential project that reflects the surrounding landscape. The stainless steel-clad pavilion was opened at the Archstoyanie Festival, held in the art park Nikola-Lenivets in Kaluga Region. The project takes shape as a full-fledged residential building with all modern conveniences where one can live inside, cook, shower, and sleep. Russian quintessential: suspended pipe-like house reflects the surrounding landscapeall images

One of the main features of the project, designed by sergey kuznetsov in collaboration with KROST, is the seamless cladding made of a 4 mm stainless steel sheet. Underneath there is a system for diverting the drum sound of rain. Meanwhile, the interior is finished in a modern style using wood and metal, and the room is equipped with everything necessary for a comfortable stay. This project is an example of modern architecture which combines high-quality materials and technologies, with extraordinary solutions. Russian Quintessential: suspended pipe-like house reflects the surrounding landscape

The pipe-shaped structure has a diameter of 3.5 meters and a length of twelve meters. it is placed on the sloped terrain, due to which the structure is literally ‘hanging in the air. To create it, complex engineering techniques were used that are usually used in shipbuilding. For example, the frame of the building is formed from supporting ribs like a body of a ship, and an impressive weight of about twelve tons is kept in balance by only six bolts.

Tthe basis of the metal frame is made up of transverse frames – load-bearing ribs installed at a pitch of 500 mm relative to each other and connected by means of stringers (horizontal guides). Due to the polyurethane foam insulation inside the pavilion, a comfortable temperature regime will be maintained throughout the year.

Delong starts Liyang stainless project installation
    1 Views

The equipment installation project for the 2,680mm stainless steel hot-rolling project of Liyang Delong Metal Technology started last week. Shanghai MCC20 is in charge of construction.

Liyang Delong plans to realise a total capacity of 6 million tonnes/year of stainless hot-rolled coil, Kallanish notes. In addition to the 6mt production line, the company has also built a 3m t/y stainless steel slab caster, a 1m t/y stainless steel hot strip mill and a 3,500mm thick plate production line.

The project's high-end stainless steel products in 300 series can replace imports for the domestic nuclear industry, chemical industry, and marine industry, according to Delong.

At present, Taiyuan Iron & Steel (Tisco) is the only company that has the ability to produce stainless HRC in widths of 1,800mm and 2,000mm. Apart from Delong, Tsingshan also plans to produce wide stainless steel through building a new 2,250mm rolling mill in Yangjiang.

China's nickel imports increase despite detained ships
    1 Views

China's nickel ore and ferronickel imports saw an increase in July, but some ships carrying ferronickel were stranded in Chinese ports.

Kallanish notes from Customs data that China's nickel ore imports in July increased by 7.21% month-on-month to 5.19 million tonnes, an increase of 6.17% over the same period last year. In the first seven months of this year, China's total imports of nickel ore increased by 24.98% year-on-year to 21.67mt. Supply from the Philippines accounted for 90.23% of total imports in the seven months, an increase of 49.35% over the same period last year.

Meanwhile, imports of ferronickel were up by 2.98% on-month and 5.25% on-year to 281,100t. This led total imports so far this year to increase by 17.4% to 2.14mt, including 1.8mt of ferronickel from Indonesia.

Under the influence of Covid-19, some ships arriving have been forced to moor off Chinese ports because their crew members tested positive. Last week, a cargo ship carrying 10,000 tonnes of high-nickel pig iron from Indonesia berthed in Lianyungang port in Jiangsu, and is now under quarantine, resulting in tight supply expectations. Another nickel ore carrying ship has also been held at Guangxi Tieshan port.

NICKEL: Stainless set to lose nickel dominance to EVs
    142 Views

Stainless steel is set to lose its position as the primary driver of global nickel pricing, concludes a report by Bank of America.

Nickel is currently at a multi-year high, the bank says - or $18,895/tonne, according to the London Metal Exchange. Concurrently, global stainless output hit a record in the third quarter of 2020 “...and has continued to post a series of highs since,” the report states.

However, while stainless currently enjoys a 70% chunk of the nickel market, that position is being challenged by the growth of the electric vehicle industry, Kallanish understands.

“While the rebound of stainless production has been key to the nickel market in recent months, electric vehicles (EVs) are set to become the key demand driver in the coming years,” Bank of America says. “Indeed, sales of electric vehicles should increase gradually, reaching a penetration rate of 51% by 2030E. Given the current battery technology, implications for consumption are relatively straightforward, with offtake expected to be increasing to just under 1.8 million t by 2030, compared to around 200,000 t this year.”

Much of that added nickel is likely to come from Indonesia, the bank adds.

“Reduced consumption of Class 1 nickel by the stainless steel mills may make more nickel units available to car manufacturers; rising scrap usage is one way this could be facilitated,” it says. “That said, ultimately, miners will need to produce more Class 1 and perhaps less Class 2 nickel to make sure the metal will not turn into a constraint to the EV industry. Indonesia, with its resources, will likely remain key to accomplishing that.”

Yongjin posts surging profits, smooth project progress
    1 Views

Supported by new capacity under operation and higher market prices, Zhejiang Yongjin Metal Technology Co. delivered surging profits in the first half of this year. The progress of projects during the reporting period was in line with its schedule announced at the end of last year, Kallanish notes.

The company made a net profit of CNY 284.6 million ($43.9m) in H1, on an operating income of CNY 14.13 billion. These two figures were up 81.67% and 78.34% year-on-year respectively.

Half-year production of 300 series and 400 series cold rolled stainless flats came to 906,429 tonnes and 144,879t respectively. The company meanwhile sold 904,501t and 140,351t of these two products, at average prices of CNY 14,075/t and CNY 9,027/t.

All the equipment for Jiangsu Yongjin’s ultra-thin stainless steel strip project, except for some imported facilities, and the first line of Zhejiang Yongjin’s cold rolled stainless steel project have started production. Equipment installation of Guangdong Yongjin and its planned Vietnamese plant is expcted to begin soon in H2 this year. The company's precision stainless strip project in Thailand, which was planned to be constructed in the fourth quarter, is still in the process of planning, environmental protection approval, and land acquisition.

Jiangsu Yinyang Stainless Steel Pipe’s 100,000 tonnes/year stainless steel pipe project is currently under construction, and the company expects to see first production at the end of this year. Yongjin controls 51% of the company through an equity purchase worth CNY 103.8m in March.

NICKEL, COPPER: Fortescue, Tsingshan may pump over $40 billion into Indonesia: minister
    166 Views

Indonesia is set to attract at least $40 billion in investments in an industrial estate for metal smelting near the planned Kayan hydropower plant on Borneo island, its government said.

The project in North Kalimantan was first announced by Indonesia’s coordinating minister for maritime affairs and investment Luhut Pandjaitain in March. This week, the official said a presentation that Australia’s Fortescue and China’s Tsingshan could invest $12 billion and $30 billion, respectively, to smelt iron ore, nickel and copper.

As much as $100 billion could be invested in Borneo, with investment including the dam and set to be completed in 10 years, the minister said. Groundbreaking on the project is slated for October, Kallanish understands.

The smelting plant could be commissioned as early as 2023, and would support Indonesia’s efforts to make the country an EV battery hub, using its abundant nickel reserves.

Tsingshan is expanding its nickel production capacity in Indonesia to meet demand from the battery sector. It can now produce battery-grade nickel matte from nickel pig iron, expanding its market reach from the traditional stainless steel sector.

Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) is currently conducting studies on potential projects in Kalimantan, although the company hasn’t confirmed any investment figures.

However, in July alone Russian stainless intake decreased by 18.5% compared to June to 34,700t.

Imports of stainless cold rolled flat products decreased 30.9% on-month, but seamless pipes intake increased by 13.5%.

Russia increased imports of stainless steel in 2020 to 383,200t, up by 3.8% on-year.

The leading manufacturers of imported stainless products in June were again based in China, whose share in the total volume was 45.6%. India’s share was 13.4%, followed by Indonesia with 6%, Taiwan with 5.8% and Ukraine with 3%.

However, China announced that some steel products will see their export tax rebates cancelled from 1 May, which will lead to export price increases (see Kallanish passim).

According to experts, traders are afraid that the imposed restriction on steelmaking by China will affect the stainless steel market and are trying to replenish their stocks, the association observes.

“Rising prices in the foreign markets and problems with the formation of orders for the imported stainless steel limits the supply for domestic customers,” USSA says. “An increase in the key rate and a further increase in prices in the foreign market will contribute to the growth of prices in the Russian market.”

Production at Russia’s Krasny Oktyabr (Red October) decreased in July compared with the previous month (see Kallanish passim). It amounted to 16,691t of stainless steel, down by 24.8% on-month. In June, production was 24,900t of stainless steel.

Stainless, batteries to compete for same pricey nickel
    1 Views

London Metal Exchange nickel prices look to close out August roughly equal to where they began.

Behind the scenes, however, major shifts are taking place in the industry as stainless steel’s volume dominance is challenged by the rise of electric vehicles.

The LME puts cash nickel at $19,225/tonne as of 25 August, down slightly from the month’s opening price of about $19,324/t.

Both are up mightily from the New Year price of $17,344/t as well as the yearly price trough, which was reached in the March-April timeframe and kept prices bouncing around the $16,000/t mark.

The high for the year occurred in late February at $19,689/t.

The multi-year high currently enjoyed by nickel is a product of several disparate factors, including returning stainless steel production, according to a recent Bank of America report (see Kallanish passim).

The growing importance of electric vehicles, however, is difficult to ignore - particularly as newer battery formulations eschew cobalt and its problematic human rights record. At least one major EV producer - Tesla - has produced nearly all-nickel battery chemistries to sidestep the cobalt issue.

Tesla’s battery chemistry evolution will take three forms, roughly equal to three performance/pricing levels. High iron batteries occupy the lowest run, with nickel-manganese in the middle and high nickel versions atop.

While the company has hinted that it might gradually increase the importance of its iron line, nickel supply remains paramount.

At Tesla’s Battery Day Event last year, senior vice president for powertrain and energy engineering Drew Baglino said that battery costs are 35% production and 65% metal. Of that, nickel makes up 35% of the cost, with lithium occupying 25% and cobalt 5%.

Simpler nickel formulations, such as matte, can now be utilised in battery production - effectively merging the battery and stainless nickel supply chains.

“We can eliminate billions in battery-grade nickel intermediate production...and we can also use that same process to directly consume nickel powder from recycling EV and electric grid batteries,” Baglino says.
