    Albemarle Corp, the world’s largest producer of lithium, raised its 2023 profit forecast on Wednesday after reporting better-than-expected quarterly results, and it shares jumped as the company cited rising global appetite for the metal used to make electric vehicle batteries.

    Shares of the Charlotte, North Carolina-based company surged 4.5% to $212 in after-hours trading.

    Albemarle said it expects lithium demand to increase further in coming months due to the push to electrify much of the world’s economy. The company produces the metal in Chile, Australia and China, and is the rapidly expanding inside the United States, where it has long been the only lithium producer.

    “We remain confident in the long-term outlook for our businesses,” CEO Kent Masters said in a press release.

    Tesla, Ford and many other automakers buy lithium from Albemarle.

    The company posted net income for the second quarter ended June 30 of $650 million, or $5.52 per share, compared with $406.8 million, or $3.46 per share, in the year-ago period.

    Excluding one-time items, Albemarle earned $7.33 per share. By that measure, analysts expected earnings of $4.44 per share, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.

    Sales in the company’s Energy Storage division, which sells lithium, more than doubled to $1.76 billion. For the year, Albemarle expects the price at which it sells its lithium to jump nearly 30% from 2022 levels.

    For the full year, Albemarle raised its forecast for adjusted earnings to a range of $25 to $29.50 per share. The company previously had expected its adjusted earnings for the year to come in at between $20.75 and $25.75 per share. Albemarle also raised its revenue forecast and its 2023 budget.

    The company plans to hold a conference call with investors to discuss the quarterly results on Thursday.

    Earlier this week, Albemarle said it would pay $82.6 million for a 5% stake in Canada-based lithium developer Patriot Battery Metals.

    Pioneer Natural Resources Co., one of the largest US shale drillers, is experimenting with mining lithium from wastewater produced in the fracking process.

    Chief executive officer Scott Sheffield told Bloomberg Television that the company started doing tests about three years ago to see whether it’s feasible to extract minerals from the large amounts of dirty water generated by drilling in the Permian Basin of West Texas and New Mexico.

    In addition to lithium, a key component of electric vehicle batteries, it might be possible to produce ammonia and gold from wastewater, Sheffield said. His comments came after Bloomberg News reported that Exxon Mobil Corp. is in talks with automakers including Tesla Inc. about supplying them with lithium.

    “We produce lots of water and we do have lithium in our water, so we’ve got some experiments going on to look at mining some of the important minerals in our water,” said Sheffield, adding that ammonia and gold could also potentially be extracted. “We’re all trying to figure out how to increase profitability.”

    Sheffield also offered a prediction on oil prices, saying he expects Brent crude to surge to $100 a barrel by the end of the year as the OPEC+ coalition extends production cuts over the next few months. He made the forecast even as lackluster global demand weighs on the market.

    (nu europa = bijna 0% ;)

    There will be fierce competition coming years to secure lithium units from Australia, Chile, Africa and Argentina.
    However, China is aggressively expanding its domestic mine production and we expect it may overtake Australia as the number one producer in 2033

    Partijen als AMG heel hard nodig, om aan deze vraag te kunnen voldoen. Het gaat vaak over auto's maar Lithium is veel breder. Wat dacht u van de zonnepanelen, waar ook een batterij voor nodig is. Zeker als salderingsregeling stopt, dan wilt u de energie gaan opslaan en 's avonds gebruiken. Of denk aan energiemaatschappijen als een Stedin welke ook kijkt naar grotere batterij opslagen, gezien netwerkkabels lange traject met doorlooptijden hebben etc. Batterijen spelen een grote belangrijke rol. AMG is wat dat betreft een pareltje om te hebben, daar zij nog meer in huis hebben als Lithium. Wellicht kan iemand de andere stoffen ook eens toelichten.

    Ik zou eerder stellen: recent zijn Spodumene- en Li-hydroxideprijzen licht gedaald. LC is stabiel op een hoog niveau (alhoewel niet meer op vroegere recordniveaus).
