Mr Sajid Javid heads to India to meet Tata steel top brass

The Telegraph reported that UK’s Business Secretary Mr Sajid Javid is to fly to Mumbai for talks with executives at Tata, in an attempt to get the stalled sale of the company’s UK steel business back on track. His trip ahead of board meeting of the Indian conglomerate was revealed by Ms Anna Soubry, the business minister, as she gave evidence to a committee of MPs examining how to preserve jobs and growth in the European steel industry.

In April, Indian conglomerate Tata announced it would sell its UK steel operations, throwing into jeopardy the jobs of its 11,000 staff and potentially twice as many positions in the supply chain.

The Government offered to take a 25pc equity stake alongside a new owner, offered hundreds of millions in support and pushed for a deal to rid the business of its millstone GBP 14.7 billion pension fund as it tried to attract a buyer and preserve steelmaking in the UK.

Seven bidders were taken through the first round of the sale process, but this then stalled with industry insiders saying that Tata was set to retain the business as the inducements on offer made holding on to it tenable.

However, the result of the EU referendum has thrown the process into chaos, with uncertainty over Britain’s economic future raising questions about the viability of the steel industry and the sale.

Chaudhary Birender Singh takes charge as new Steel Minister

The Hindu Business Line reported that Rajya Sabha MP Chaudhary Birender Singh has taken charge as the new Steel Minister at a time when the sector faces low prices and high debt. Mr Singh, who joined the BJP in 2014 after ending a 42-year association with the Congress, was earlier Rural Development Minister.

In the Steel Ministry, his immediate challenge will be to convince the Finance and Commerce Ministries to extend the minimum import price on more than 170 steel products.

He said “I’m result oriented and I will work towards making the sector better.”

He added that he wants the make the steel sector progressive and globally competitive to face the challenges posed by the current world scenario with a futuristic roadmap.

On Mr Singh’s new agenda is a financial package for the steel sector that is currently being worked out.

Tata Steel UK could be nationalised – Ms Anna Soubry

The Guardian reported that UK’s minister for small business Ms Anna Soubry said that the British government would consider nationalising Tata Steel, as leaving the EU could further damage the struggling steel industry.

Giving evidence to MPs on a joint select committee session about the steel industry, Anna Soubry said she remains confident that Tata Steel will find a buyer for its UK business, despite economic volatility triggered by the Brexit vote. She renewed the government’s pledge that it stands ready to lend money “on commercial terms” to any eventual buyer, or take an ownership stake in the business.

She said “When we faced the crisis with Tata … you can be assured we looked at all options and one of those was whether or not, my phrase, to ‘buy it for a quid’. When you make political determination that you’re going to keep at least one of the blast furnaces at Tata’s Port Talbot steelworks open, you look at all options.”

The government has suggested it could co-invest with a potential buyer by taking a 25% stake in the business.

Ms Soubry also did not rule out full nationalisation on a temporary basis, if the sale process collapses.

Ms Soubry, who campaigned to remain in the EU, also warned that Brexit could have profound consequences” for the British steel industry, regardless of Tata’s sale process. Steelmakers have struggled under the burden of high energy costs and the dumping of cheap steel onto the market by Chinese firms.

Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal develop lighter but stronger steel for auto

Nikkei reported that Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal has developed an automotive steel sheet that is 20-30% lighter and 25% stronger than the toughest high-tensile steel now on the market, hoping to help carmakers build more fuel-efficient, safer vehicles. The company is conducting verification tests and will start marketing the product around 2020 for use in vehicle frames, chassis and other components.

Currently, the highest grade of cold-rolled steel offered by major steelmakers has a strength of 1,180 megapascals. Nippon Steel's new, lighter material has a strength of 1,470 megapascals.

By improving the heat treatment process and adding alloy elements, Nippon Steel improved both strength and ease of rolling. The material is resistant to cracks from the stamping process.

The company hopes to keep the price flat with current top-of-the-line offerings.

The material is not as light as aluminum alloy or plastic reinforced with carbon fiber. But its price is only a third to half that of aluminum -- with processing costs factored in -- and about 1/20 that of carbon-fiber plastic.

Automakers are scrambling to meet increasingly tight fuel-economy regulations worldwide by employing lighter materials in vehicles. Nippon Steel thinks its new product fits the bill -- at a reasonable price.

Only one bidder left in Tata Steel UK talks –ITV News

ITV News reported that there is only one bidder left with any serious chance of buying Tata Steel UK, but a deal is unlikely to be any time soon, as others hit out at the company's unprofessional sales process. As per report Mr Sanjeev Gupta’s Liberty House has taken an almost unassailable lead over the other six contenders, including the management buyout team, Excalibur Steel UK.

Tata has been in regular meetings with Liberty House and although publicly the company is still considering all bids, sources close to the talks have confirmed Tata is only dealing with Liberty House.

However, while Liberty House is still able to reach a deal with the Indian based firm, it is understood to be unlikely any time soon.

When the Tata Board meets tomorrow in Mumbai it is expected that they will agree to keep running their UK business for the foreseeable future.

Tata could cite Brexit having caused commercial and political uncertainty in the UK as a reason not to sell - but in reality, Tata Steel UK is now in profit by an estimated £15m in the last quarter, and there is no reason to rush.

Tata Steel not rushing UK sale amid bailout promises - BBC

BBC reported that it understands that Tata Steel is expected to announce on Friday that it will pause on the sale of most of its UK business.

Meanwhile the British government's offer of financial aid to Tata Steel UK and to potential buyers of its assets is still on the table, Business Minister Anna Soubry said on Wednesday, despite Britain's shock vote last month to leave the European Union. Seeking to avoid thousands of job losses, the government had offered millions of pounds in support for the company and its potential buyers. It also pledged to take a 25 per cent equity stake in Tata Steel UK and reform the British Steel Pension Scheme (BSPS).

Speaking at a special steel enquiry in parliament on Wednesday, Soubry said, that there is no change, the offer is still there.

Reforming the deficit-laden BSPS, which has some 130,000 members, is a major stumbling block for any buyer of Tata Steel's UK assets, and Soubry said reforms will take time.

The business minister, who opposed Britain leaving the EU, said she was still confident a buyer could be found, even as some MPs referred to reports that Tata Steel had put the sale process on hold.

Yangtze River rainstorms may raise steel prices in China - Report

China Daily reported that the continuous rainstorms along the Yangtze River are likely push up steel prices in the short term but won't have much effect on the prices in the long run, as steel producers reported improving conditions at plants where production was negatively affected. The rainstorms, which started at the end of June, have affected 23 million people in central China, causing direct economic losses of CNY 38.2 billion

A survey conducted by mysteel.com found that 17 steel smelters in Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei, Hunan and Jiangxi provinces have been affected. It found that a total of 37,250 cubic meters of production capacity were shut down and 21 steel rolling lines suspended. Daily production has been cut by 57,800 tons, representing 25 percent of output of the affected businesses.

The survey said most of the smelters have around 10 days stocks of raw materials. It said steel stocks have been rising due to the suspension of shipping and raw material supplies have not been very high.

A spokesman for Wuhan Iron and Steel (Group) Corp said production processes had been affected to different degrees, including its coking, sintering, puddling operations and the company's steel rolling lines were affected by a power blackout. Spokesman Mei Yun said the plant had been partly flooded, but production was set to resume on Thursday night.

Rail transportation in parts of Ma'anshan, Anhui province, was suspended on Sunday in the face of rising water levels. Ma'anshan-based Magang (Group) Holding Co Ltd was at one point facing production suspension due to its low stock of coking coal, said company spokesman Lu Bin.
