www.nutech.nl/internet/3785493/apple-...

No Map Love at WWDC 2014. Before today’s WWDC, there were a lot of hints that there would be some big announcements from Apple on new features for maps as part of the iOS8/Yosemite launch. Most of the speculation was on transit routing, including a pretty detailed review from 9to5Mac, complete with screen shots. So I watched the Tim & Craig show from start to finish, and here’s what I saw: Nothing. That’s not strictly true. In fact you saw a lot of quick shots of maps integrated into many of the new things that Apple did announce: maps in Notifications, Calendars, Messenger, Family Sharing, Photos and probably a few others that snuck in while my attention lagged. That by itself says something: Maps are a utility that will be threaded throughout the Apple applications. That’s not new; Google has been doing that on its services for a while but it did come though in the presentation. But there was no big news, no big feature or even any real mention of maps at all (except a weird nod to maps in China at the very end). That’s a little surprising given that Apple has been making a big push on maps for the last year. Five of their thirteen acquisitions in 2013 were in mapping and location technologies (if you count Broadmap) and they have consistently had a pretty staggering set of job reqs posted for engineers in the Apple Geo team. And they’ve been hiring some pretty good people. So I was surprised not to see anything at WWDC. What are all those people doing over there anyway? Since Apple never tells me anything, I can only guess. Here are my guesses:“Hey, We’ve fixed this” doesn’t play at WWDC: Two years ago, Apple famously over-promised and under-delivered on maps at WWDC. Since then, they have done a really good job of correcting many of the issues with data. Two of their acquisitions were aimed at this as were a lot of the hires they have made. Today, Apple maps work well. I’d argue that Google still wins in search and geocoding but Apple has a very nice product. But pointing out that the basic stuff works now isn’t good theatre and WWDC is nothing if not theatre. (Note: I hear rumblings about the data overseas…I am not sure if non-US users would agree that it is “fixed”.) “We’ve got that too” doesn’t play either: I suspect Apple is coming out with transit routing (courtesy of Hopstop and Embark team/tech), but why highlight a feature that you were roundly criticized for not having and just now come out with…especially if it only gets you parity with your competitor? Transit routing should have been in v1.0 instead of Flyover. Coming out with it two years late doesn’t get you many points unless you do something dramatically better. From the previews, it doesn’t. They don’t have anything to say on their own data…yet: I believe that Apple is at a competitive disadvantage to Google because they don’t own their own data. In just one example, Mike Blumenthal detailed the time it takes for Apple to correct map data (working through their data supplier) vs Google (one year vs two weeks). Given the resources Apple is putting into Geo, I think they will address this some day. But today was not the day. Ultimately, it remains to be seen if Apple views maps as an area where they can establish competitive advantage or if they are just shooting for “good enough”. There is a case for good enough. Usage numbers show that if the default map is serviceable, it will get a lot of users just by being the default. Most people just don’t download an alternative unless they need to. That’s important because it means that they don’t need to be in the arms race with Google. It allows Apple to offer maps as a utility for all those other properties where it popped up in today’s talk. It will also be important to have a good navigation experience in order for CarPlay to be effective, but I think their nav app has been good since day 1 (once you get the destination right). Unlike Google, Apple doesn’t need to drive a compelling local search experience off their maps. Maybe good enough is good enough. But they’re hiring some really good people and putting a lot into maps. I don’t think you attract those people to a vision of building a good-enough product. I still believe (hope, maybe) that there is more to come from the Apple Geo team, if not at WWDC 2014, at some event in the future.prioleauadv.com/archives/541#more-541

Apple Carplay vs Android: the smartphone hits the roadBy Damion Smy Motor Industry 11 June 2014 07:18 The days of frustrating in-car interfaces and clunky touchscreens are ending, as computing giants Apple and Google start unleashing the full power of smartphone technology in your car. Apple has fired the opening salvo in the war on wheels with its ‘CarPlay’ system launched at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show and offered by Ferrari, Mercedes and Volvo, and at least 15 other car brands. If you own an iPhone, you’ll find CarPlay natural and intuitive – it’s this type of familiarity that car companies and Apple are banking on to win you over. Cars have been able to play your iTunes library and read texts for a while, but CarPlay takes this functionality to a whole new level. How your iPhone powers your car's entertainment system With CarPlay, you won’t need a sat-nav, because Apple Maps is relayed on your car’s screen. You won’t be restricted to the tunes in your iPhone, because you’ll be able to access all your Cloud-stored music (and conceivably films and photos), or stream Spotify. There’ll be internet access, the ability to download apps, more free-form voice control, and more. And the icons and interface will be familiar from your iPhone. For Apple and Google, your car is the next digital frontier. It’s the place where drivers can’t deeply interact with their smartphones, but the computing giants want to change that by offering user-friendly, simple and intuitive infotainment systems. And it’s another way for them to influence your phone choice, and sell you apps and services. ‘The car is like the second lounge room, with the amount of time people spend there, and this presents a big opportunity,’ says T3 magazine’s Kieran Alger. Volvo vows to be at the leading edge of CarPlay: it’ll be plumbed into the new XC90 arriving this autumn. ‘It’s not about replacing a car’s functionality, it’s about extending it,’ says Volvo’s connectivity brand manager, David Holecek. But what if you haven’t got an iPhone? You can wire your Android phone up to Volvo’s in-car interface, but you won’t be able to unlock so many features. Clunkily, your iPhone will also have to be physically attached, and it has to be by lightning cable and to an iPhone 5. Ford, which has a long-standing supply deal with Microsoft, paints itself as ‘device agnostic’. ‘The lifecycle of a car is much longer than a smartphone’s,’ says Ford’s director of connected services, Jo Beiser. ‘We’ll work with a number of systems; we’re not gambling on one tech.’ For Ferrari, CarPlay is a natural fit – some 90% of its customers are Apple junkies.Android's rival to Apple CarPlay Google is working on a rival to CarPlay, but it’s yet to fully show its hand. It has formed the Open Automotive Alliance, and Audi, Hyundai and General Motors have all signed up: the first cars with the system arrive this year. Are consumers in danger of getting stuck with the in-car infotainment equivalent of Betamax video? After all, the consumer electronics industry moves at a frantic pace compared to the automotive business, with most new car tech locked down three years ahead of landing in your driveway. To solve this, car makers are adept at offering software updates to help futureproof your car. Hopefully that’ll mean cars that don’t feel years behind your latest smartphone, with seamless integration and no compromises. So who’s going to win the war – Apple or Android?’ ‘It’s really early days,’ says T3’s Alger. ‘But if it’s about being first, Apple’s ahead.’ And who’s nailed it out of Ferrari, Merc or Volvo? ‘Volvo has done it best – its system feels the most natural and Apple-like in its intuitiveness’. Over to you then, Google… Which car makers are choosing Apple Carplay and Android OSAPPLE CARPLAY Ferrari Hyundai Honda Volvo Mercedes BMW Chevrolet Ford Mitsubishi Land Rover Nissan Opel/Vauxhall Subaru Suzuki Toyota Peugeot Citroën JaguarANDROID (Google) Audi GM Honda Hyundai
Google to reveal operating system that will rival Apple CarPlay Automotive News June 16, 2014 - 11:48 am ET -- WASHINGTON -- Google Inc. will unveil its first in-car operating system at its annual software developer conference this month, intensifying its race with Apple Inc. to become the leader in dashboard computing, three sources briefed on the project tell Automotive News. Google’s system, which was known internally as Google Auto Link during development, will be the first product to emerge from the Open Automotive Alliance, a Google-led consortium that also includes Audi AG, General Motors Co., Honda Motor Co., Hyundai Motor Group and chipmaker NVIDIA Corp. The sources said GAL is not an embedded infotainment system, but a “projected” system -- meaning that smartphones using Google’s Android operating system could be controlled using a car’s own controls and display screen. Google plans to reveal the interface and offer demonstrations to developers at the Google I/O conference, scheduled for June 25-26 in San Francisco, but will not announce which model will use it first, the sources said. When the Open Automotive Alliance’s formation was announced in January, the group said it would bring the Android operating system to cars “starting in 2014.” Spokesmen for Mountain View, Calif.-based Google did not return messages seeking comment. Interfaces for Android phones are a natural next step for Google, which started an automotive push in 2005 and now has partnerships with several automakers. Audi has an exclusive deal for its luxury cars to use Google Earth satellite images as an overlay for GPS maps; Hyundai has equipped some of its cars with a built-in Google search engine function that allows drivers to find nearby destinations with voice recognition. However, as in the market for smartphones, where the Android operating system has overtaken Apple’s iOS as the world’s most popular with more than 1 billion devices activated, Google is playing fast follower to the inventor of the iPhone. As in the market for smartphones, where the Android operating system has overtaken Apple’s iOS as the world’s most popular, with more than 1 billion devices activated, Google is playing fast follower to the inventor of the iPhone. Apple made a splash at the Geneva auto show in March with CarPlay, an interface resembling that of the iPhone. It lets drivers choose a song, set a GPS destination or call a friend using voice controls or large, colorful buttons on a touchscreen. In press materials, Apple described CarPlay as “a smarter, safer way to use your iPhone in the car” -- with an emphasis on “safer,” now that auto-safety regulators are putting pressure on smartphone companies to reduce the risk of distracted driving. Apple said in Geneva that CarPlay would be available first in March in the Ferrari FF grand tourer. Apple said that models from Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo would follow later this year. Apple and Google’s rush into the automotive space could change the approach taken by automakers, which have spent considerable time and money over the past two decades crafting their own infotainment systems. The technology giants argue that most customers are used to using either iOS or Android smartphones, so offering similar platforms in the car will be a more natural fit. Apple and Google also have large communities of developers who write apps for their platforms -- offering an economy of scale that automakers, with their custom-made infotainment systems, have long lacked. Apple and Google ultimately aspire to provide embedded infotainment systems, which would offer a lucrative new line of business beyond PCs, tablets and smartphones. Beyond the system to be unveiled this month, Google is “also developing new Android platform features that will enable the car itself to become a connected Android device,” the company said in January. “Stay tuned for more details coming soon.”
