Fugro starts construction of new international headquarters
Artist impression new Nootdorp head office

    Published

    01 Dec 2023

    Location

    Leidschendam, Netherlands

Fugro has contracted constructor De Vries en Verburg to build a new international head office in Nootdorp, the Netherlands. The new premises are strategically located near The Hague and Rotterdam and have room to develop a completely new and sustainable office with space for approximately 550 employees. To be built directly next to the existing Fugro TechCenter, the office will bring the majority of Fugro employees in the Netherlands together in one place.

The design of architect Cepezed has been certified with a BREEAM Outstanding label, meaning the building will comply with the highest standards in sustainability and fits with Fugro’s net zero 2035 ambition. Fugro also made an innovative design for rainwater storage on the premises, which includes infiltration in deep soil layers and allows reuse of the water.

Construction work will commence soon, with delivery of the office expected for the second half of 2025. Fugro ultimately intends to lease the building and is currently reviewing options for financing and selling it.

The current (owned) headquarters of Fugro in Leidschendam, the Netherlands, is strongly outdated. Fugro is in conversation with the Voorburg-Leidschendam city council about the future plans for the plot and buildings at the Dillenburgsingel and Veurse Achterweg in Leidschendam.

Custos energy spuds first oil well

    By
    Suzie Shefeni
    1 December 2023
Custos Energy has commenced drilling in the Mopane well offshore Namibia this week.

The Mopane 2X exploration well is located at the southern end of PEL 83 in the Orange Basin.

This well is the first of two set to be drilled by the consortium.

Knowledge Katti, the chief executive of Custos Energy, says the oil block is likely to be profitable.

“The significant prospectivity of PEL 83, together with its relatively shallow water depth, positions it to be one of the most significant and profitable opportunities in the Orange Basin.

“The ongoing progress on our licences emphasises the unmatched quality of our portfolio in the heart of the Orange Basin,” he says.

Galp holds an 80% interest in the project exploring PEL 83, while Namcor and Custos Investments both hold 10% shares individually.

Their operations will be carried by the Portuguese energy corporation, Galp Energia, in the exploration phase.

The exploration block is located north of the Graff-1, La Rona-1 and Jonker-1 that are being appraised and explored by Shell.

Early last month the consortium contracted Fugro to conduct environmental and geophysical fieldwork offshore Namibia before the commencement of drilling.

Rob Hawkins, Fugro’s commercial director for Africa, says the fieldwork’s environmental and chemical analysis is a critical part of minimising the harms of oil prospecting in the region.

“Our expertise in deepwater surveying and identifying protected habitats supports sustainable and efficient offshore energy developments, while minimising negative impacts on the marine environment.

“Fugro remains committed to the preservation of the environment, and this survey is an essential step towards achieving this goal,” he says.

Earlier this month, oil commissioner Maggy Shino stressed the importance of prioritising environmentally safe processes in the energy sector.

“This is done to ensure that our pursuit of increased energy does not compromise the health of our planet. Balancing energy needs with environmental stewardship is essential for a sustainable future,” she said.

Shino highlighted the significance of the Orange Basin as Namibia positions itself as a major energy player.

“We are excited to test the extension of the proven Upper Cretaceous plays into PEL 83. We believe PEL 83 will continue to demonstrate the world-class scale and quality of plays in Namibia’s Orange Basin,” she said.

The consortium exploring PEL 83 will continue exploration into early 2024 with the Hercules semi-submersible rig.

Revolutionizing ocean exploration through global multi-robot empowerment

After a three-year hiatus, Underwater Intervention (UI) is back, attracting a global audience to the International WorkBoat Show in New Orleans.

Aidan Thorn, business development manager of marine robotics at Sonardyne, provided an update on what it has meant to see multiple unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) launched from the E/V Nautilus. The Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute (OECI) hosted the Multivehicle Exploration expedition with the concept of operating three platforms together, one USV and two AUVs.

The University of New Hampshire's USV DriX, the University of Rhode Island’s Deep Autonomous Profile (DAP), and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s Mesobot were all the coordinated underwater tools on the 18-day mission. DriX, DAP, and Mesobot were able to explore the entire water column, beginning on the seafloor around the Geologists Seamounts south of the Main Hawaiian Islands.

Deploying a single UUV from a ship can be time-consuming and expensive, and it limits the amount of data that can be collected. Even where multiUUVs can be accommodated, typically only one is deployed at a time due to the complexity. As unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) become more advanced, they can be used as "remote shepherds" to control UUVs. This means UUV operations can be conducted without a mothership, opening new possibilities for multiple autonomous tools.

“The Sonardyne ROS driver was a key component used with Project 11 on DriX, which provided situational awareness, command, and control during the project,” Thorn explained. “Many different institutions gathered on board and witnessed both vehicles working together and communicating mapping and camera data via DriX's acoustic relay. In real time they could see the vehicles speak the same language.”

DriX used a broadband link to communicate with the ship and a Sonardyne USBL solution to communicate and provide navigation data to the AUVs.

Fugro's remote operations capabilities are another example of this technology. They have fit its USVs with Sonardyne USBL, allowing them to position UUVs for missions. Most recently, Fugro fitted its UUV with Sonardyne's Sprint-Nav Mini to support MBES surveys. This has opened up numerous opportunities.

“The Sprint-Nav Mini is the smallest of its kind and can provide reliable surface and subsea vehicle guidance and navigation when you’re tight on space,” Thorn said.

Collectively, the multivehicle explorations surveyed midwater ecosystems associated with seamounts and gained new important information on the spatial and temporal dynamics of these largely unstudied ecosystems. The knowledge and data collected are essential precursors for future exploration and discoveries and contribute directly to the U.S. National Strategy for Ocean Mapping, Exploration, and Characterization, Seabed 2030.

All these insights highlight how USV/UUV collaboration can be deployed to deliver valuable data results in a cost-effective, low-carbon and safe manner for multiple scientific and commercial purposes.

All-systems-go for Woodside to embark on subsea infrastructure decom ops off Australia

    AUTHORITIES & GOVERNMENT
December 1, 2023, by Melisa Cavcic
Australian energy giant Woodside has received a stamp of approval from the country’s offshore regulator for an environment plan (EP), covering decommissioning and dismantling activities at a field off the coast of Australia.

    FPSO Griffin Venture; Source: BHP
The National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA) accepted Woodside’s environment plan on November 21, 2023, proposing to undertake closure of the Griffin field facilities, located in production license WA-10-L off Western Australia, 65 km northwest of Onslow and 94 km northeast of Exmouth, in a water depth of approximately 130 m.

The field comprises 12 former subsea oil production wells, permanently plugged in 2017, and associated subsea infrastructure, which has been flushed of hydrocarbons. A gas export pipeline (GEP) extends from the field through Commonwealth – pipeline license WA-3-PL – and state waters – pipeline license TPL/10 – to the former onshore Griffin gas export facility, south of Onslow.

Furthermore, the decommissioning of the Griffin field is planned to be undertaken in stages under relevant Commonwealth and state government approvals, with the first stage including the removal of flowlines, wellheads, and subsea ancillary equipment from WA-10-L. This revised EP will also cover the removal of the wellhead of an exploration well in the neighboring license, WA-12-L, along with ongoing field management activities on the subsea infrastructure and the GEP in Commonwealth waters, as required until permission is granted to relinquish the licenses.

Therefore, the scope of the EP includes the removal of thirteen wellheads and guide bases, twelve Xmas trees, the full removal of the riser turret mooring (RTM), six RTM mooring lines, nine flexible production risers, around 47 km of flexible production flowlines, about 12 km of rigid production spools and flow lines, twelve electrohydraulic umbilicals and flying leads, pipeline end manifold, six mooring chains, four distribution skids and assorted mud mat structures: heat exchanger, 3 x Umbilical termination assemblies and electrical distribution units, choke skid, 17 x pyramid anode skids.

According to Woodside, the removal activities will start no sooner than 3Q 2023, pending regulatory approvals, support vessel availability, and weather constraints. The activities covered in the EP may occur at any time of year, with completion by the end of calendar year 2024. The GEP and remaining field equipment – such as piles, anchors, and concrete gravity bases – will be subject to separate future environmental approvals.

While in production, the Griffin field comprised the FPSO Griffin Venture with 12 production wells from the Griffin, Scindian, and Chinook reservoirs routed to the riser turret mooring via flexible and rigid flowlines. Oil products were stabilized and stored for offloading via tanker, while gas products were transported to the shore via the Griffin gas export pipeline (GEP) for domestic sale. The field ceased production in 2009.

In a bid to put its decommissioning plans into action, the Australian giant handed out a batch of decommissioning deals to multiple players – Transocean, TechnipFMC, Heerema, McDermott, Fugro, DOF, and McMahon – for the removal and disposal of subsea infrastructure at several oil and gas fields offshore Western Australia, including Griffin

Denk dat iedereen in een winterslaap is, het is zo rustig op de forums zo te zien.

Olie, Shell en SBM gaat allemaal naar beneden.
Dan blijft Fugro nog aardig liggen zullen wij dan maar zeggen.
