    Suffolk County Council and BAM Nuttal have failed to agree a final price in the two-stage bid to design and build a £60m tilting bridge in Lowestoft.
    Now in an unusual step for a major civils project the council is going back to the market to retender the Lake Lothing Third Crossing project.

    Sources said BAM Nuttall would be free to rebid the road crossing against a new field of bidders if it chooses.

    BAM has been working up designs and costings since being awarded preferred bidder on the project 12 months ago.

    But it is understood the project has surpassed the council’s budget forcing it to decided to retest market pricing.

    Councillor Matthew Hicks, leader of Suffolk County Council, said: “It is my responsibility as leader of the Council, to ensure that we get the best possible value for the Suffolk taxpayer.

    “We will achieve this by completing the comprehensive tender process.

    “I look forward to reviewing the applications to build this bridge, which will make an incredible difference to Lowestoft and the eastern region.”

    The decision will be a blow to BAM Nuttall which already has strong links to the region, having worked on projects such as Great Yarmouth Flood Alleviation Scheme and ABP Ipswich Quay Works.

    An invitation to tender is expected in mid-November with the council planning a market engagement event to be held in Lowestoft on 30 October.

    Denk dat je er niet ver naast zit Tartessos met deze preview. Ter aanvulling vermeld ik wel dat je voorspellingen geen rekening houden met politieke en economische ontwikkelingen. BAM zelf zal direct weinig invloed hebben van de Brexit, maar als daardoor de Britse economie stagneert krijgt het bedrijf dat daar eenderde van zijn omzet maakt, daar toch een tik van mee.
    Verder is het belangrijk wat de wereldeconomie gaat doen. Nog steeds durven weinigen te spreken over een naderende depressie. Toch zie ik vele tekenen. Al maanden worden groeiprognose steeds een klein stukje naar beneden bijgesteld en wanneer je kijkt naar verwachtingen van ondernemers wordt je ook niet echt vrolijk. De laatste weken lees je dat ook het consumentenvertrouwen in de vis en in meerdere Europesche landen tanende is. De kwartaalcijfers over het derde kwartaal zijn gemiddeld genomen niet juichend maar vallen ook weer niet echt tegen. Dat allemaal meenemend denk ik dat de gouden tijden voor de bouw het hoogtepunt naderen. Maar het is in Nederland wel een sector, die geleerd heeft niet voor iedere prijs te werken en er blijft ook al komt er een dip een sector waar nog veel te doen is op het gebied van woningbouw en infra. De macro- ontwikkelingen die ik noem zullen de bouw niet in de afgrond storten.
    Met een rente die ondanks een kleine verhoging van de 10 jaars rente nog steeds extreem laag blijft en nog wel even laag zal blijven, wordt de bouwsector een van de betere beleggingscategorieen.

    De berichten van Fugro waren niet slecht, voor de toekomst wel een gokje waard.
    Helaas daar ook veel shorters aanwezig.
    Ach die shorters.. Die kunnen de koers ook flink omhoog helpen, als het bedrijf maar goede resultaten levert. Dat bleek gisteren weer bij BESI en Arcadis.

    Bij deze resultaten zullen banken niet moeilijk doen over verlenging van de aflopende lening. Die zal waarschijnlijk grote deels afgelost kunnen worden.

    Major contractors sign up to year-long flexible-working trial

    Willmott Dixon, Bam, Skanska and Bam Nuttall have signed up to an onsite flexible-working scheme with Build UK and Timewise.

    The four contractors are the first to trial flexible-working consultant Timewise’s Construction Pioneers programme, which will focus on onsite jobs that typically have more rigid shift working.

    The trial, which will last between 12 and 16 months, will include an in-depth flexible-working plan, training sessions and mentoring.

    Once completed, Timewise will share findings from the project with the industry.

    Timewise launched the scheme after finding that fewer than 5 per cent of advertisements for frontline construction jobs contained any reference to flexible-working options.

    According to the consultant, this figure falls 10 percentage points short of the UK cross-industry average of 15 per cent.

    By trialling new ways to structure and manage construction shifts, the Construction Pioneers project aims to attract a more diverse talent pool into the industry and improve workers’ mental health.

    Timewise chief executive Emma Stewart (pictured) said the scheme was a “key way to tackle a whole range of key workforce and skills challenges”.

    She said that while many people believed flexible working in construction was “simply impossible” to achieve due to its “long-hours culture, deadline-driven mentality and physical demands”, the trial would test how to make flexible working “truly work in construction”.

    Build UK chief executive Suzannah Nichol noted the challenge of meeting work/life balance requirements in construction.

    She said: “This is not something we can do on our own, and Timewise is leading the way in enabling the major industries to change the way they operate.”

    Last week, at Construction News’ Inspire Me event, Willmott Dixon head of people operations Clare Williams spoke about the importance of flexible working in attracting and retaining a more diverse workforce.

    Speaking about the firm's involvement with the Timewise scheme, Ms Williams said the contractor had made “great strides” in its bit to promote agile working, and that this would contribute to “a real change” in the industry.

    Skanska executive vice president Harvey Francis said the industry had “struggled to accommodate" flexible working for too long.

    He added: “This hasn’t helped us in our desire to attract and retain a greater diversity of people, which we believe is critical to our long-term sustainability and success.”

    Bam Construct UK executive director Andrea Singh said that although it had previously been thought that flexibility on site was “just too complicated” to achieve, the industry “can and will find a solution”.

    Ms Singh said the Construction Pioneers programme was “taking the first steps to reshape the future” of the industry, adding: “We will all come to benefit from these essential changes.”

    BAM to remodel historic cinema in Port Talbot

    Hemel Hempstead, 25 October 2019 - After 20 years of standing derelict, Port Talbot Cinema finally sees contractors arrive on site to commence its delicate restoration. BAM Construction is beginning works under a pre-contract agreement with Neath Port Talbot Council to re-develop the grade II listed art deco building that was once frequented by Anthony Hopkins and Richard Burton.

    The construction firm BAM, which is enjoying its 150th year of trading globally. has been active in Wales since it created Usk Sessions House in Monmouthshire 1877. The company will retain as much of the original cinema’s facade as possible having secured the initial phase of works against strong competition.

    BAM is behind many iconic buildings in Wales such as the old Hoover factory in the late 1940s, the National Museum of Wales in the late 1980s, and a suite of recent buildings for Cardiff University, and is discussing the full contract to deliver the new cinema building valued at around £7 million.

    Award-winning architects GWP are the designers and the scheme has been procured via the South West Wales Regional Contractors Framework.

    When it re-opens in 2021, the new cinema will have been converted into a multi-purpose community hub with recreational facilities, shops, and office space for local businesses, among other things.

    Tim Chell, BAM’s Director for Wales and the South West of England, said: ‘We’ve got an immensely strong record in Wales, where we’ve had a dedicated permanent office based in Cardiff since 1989. Our strength is our working style, which is highly collaborative, and we’re also known to be market leaders in technology. Both of those qualities will be important to both renew and re-create facilities here that make Port Talbot’s cinema a special building again.’

    BAM history includes several schemes in Neath, including schools and 70 years ago two industrial facilities for Metal Box Company, once one of the world’s largest packaging businesses. BAM is now behind the new Brecon High School, Cardiff University’s Student Centre, and Gwent Police HQ.

    Mr Chell added that he believes the supply chain in Wales is the best in the UK. ‘Time after time, we find Welsh companies scoring very highly in their approach to safety and collaborative working. I believe Welsh construction businesses rank equal to any found in the UK.’

    If all the contractual agreements are concluded, full works on the cinema will commence later this year.

    In a separate announcement today, BAM – together with sister company civil engineering contractor BAM Nuttall – has become the first pioneers for a study into flexible working in construction on site, which could change the way the industry retains and attracts people.

    BAM gaat Britse bioscoop renoveren

    PORT TALBOT (AFN) - Bouwbedrijf BAM heeft een renovatie-opdracht in het Britse Port Talbot binnengesleept. Het gaat om de verbouwing van de art-decobioscoop in het havenstadje in Wales. Het filmhuis ging 20 jaar geleden failliet en wacht sindsdien op een nieuwe bestemming.

    BAM gaat de bioscoop omturnen tot een multifunctioneel gebouw met ruimten voor onder meer winkels, recreatieve voorzieningen en kantoren. De gevel van het pand wordt daarbij zo goed als mogelijk behouden. Het pand moet in 2021 zijn deuren opnieuw openen.

    De opdracht heeft een contractwaarde van ongeveer 7 miljoen pond. Dat is omgerekend ruim 8 miljoen euro.
