www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-12-15/bit... If you think oil had a rough 2014, consider bitcoin. The digital currency has plunged 54 percent since the beginning of the year. By contrast, Brent crude has fallen 44 percent; the ruble is off some 46 percent against the dollar.
Op de website meldt Bitstamp: “We have reason to believe that one of Bitstamp’s operational wallets was compromised on January 4th, 2015.www.rtlnieuws.nl/economie/home/proble... As a security precaution against comprimises Bitstamp only maintains a small fraction of the customer bitcoins in online systems. Bistamp maintains more than enough offline reserves to cover the compromised bitcoins.
Simon Dixon blijft echter positief.
Litecoin developer Charlie Lee shocked many community members last month when he said “Litecoin does not need development right now.” Rather, he said, the coin needed users, liquidity, and merchant acceptance to succeed in the long term. However, the coin has struggled to achieve any of those aspirations, and the bitcoin price decline has weakened faith in the cryptocurrency industry as a whole. Consequently, investors have begun losing faith in altcoins, and in turn the litecoin price is bottoming out. Also read: Litecoin and Dogecoin to Join Forces for Charity Litecoin Price Tanking The litecoin price declined consistently throughout 2014 and has continued to fall during January. As recently as June, the litecoin price exceeded $10. During the past month, the litecoin price declined from $3 to $1.40–an alarming decline for one of the industry’s most prominent coins.
Litecoin Price Linked to Bitcoin Price Connor Black, CEO of digital currency service Harborly, told CCN he believes the litecoin price decline is a by-product of the bitcoin price downtrend. Even though litecoin’s largest trading pair is USD, bitcoin’s vastly superior market cap (among cryptocurrencies) governs the direction of the litecoin price. Harborly Harborly is a digital currency service that allows users to buy and sell bitcoin and litecoin. A major problem with the Litecoin price is the currency’s failure to distinguish itself as little more than the speculative younger brother of Bitcoin. Looking at this last year you see that Bitcoin and Litecoin have had strong price correlations, with Litecoin usually trending further in either direction. When Bitcoin falls Litecoin plunges, and when Bitcoin rises Litecoin soars. Indeed, altcoin market caps have (generally) evaporated at an even more alarming rate than bitcoin’s. However, Black believes litecoin can regain its swagger if the bitcoin price improves and the cryptocurrency community recognizes Litecoin’s benefits. For Litecoin to get back on track, the digital currency community needs to recognize some of the big benefits Litecoin can offer. One benefit being that Litecoin transactions are about 4X faster than Bitcoin’s. This can be utilized with great success from casual spending to remittances, ensuring faster service time and less exposure to market volatility. Disclosure: The author is not invested in Litecoin
Bitcoin Price Ruins Cloud Mining and here’s the Good News Evander Smart As we’ve been following for you here on CCN, Cloud Mining has been taking a beating with the precipitous drop in Bitcoin price over the lasts several months. The profit margins have become thinner and thinner, and now may be non-existent for many in the industry. Some reports have as many as 30,000 miners leaving the industry since BTC has entered the $300-and-below range. Many Bitcoin critics are eager to take this as a sign of Bitcoin’s inherent weakness of value. Is that the case? Can this purging of clouded, corporate miners, in fact, be a good thing? In order to take advantage of the swollen BTC price in late 2013, the “Cloud Hashing” or corporate cloud mining industry took off. Plenty of people worldwide suddenly became very interested in investing in the cloud mining concept. The amount of miners has passed 75000 in total. Question is: Does Bitcoin need 75k+ miners to be effective? MIT’s Technology Review spoke with Harvard Associate Professor Benjamin Edelman. His research on Bitcoin says to him that these current issues can cause a more widespread problem in the industry. “I think that miners are pulling out and dumping Bitcoin to make up for lost revenue, which itself changes the value,” says Edelman. Those that do continue mining will contribute to the problem because they will have to immediately sell any Bitcoins they mine, he says. Also read: HashCoins Provides Hosted Mining Services You Can Trust mining Can our old school mining buddies make a comeback with Cloud Mining in the dumps? Another reaction by the Bitcoin community could be that home miners re-enter the market. This war of attrition doesn’t necessarily mean there aren’t enough miners. The mix of corporate investors and small-time home miners can change back to the mix it was before the bubble in late 2013. Maybe the problem with Bitcoin has been too many chefs in the kitchen? Bitcoin price in US Dollar values didn’t have any problem rising thousands of percent in value annually when cloud mining was just a novel idea not ready for prime time. It seems the mom-and-pop miners, who were working from home, were doing a fine job by BTC. The difficulty in the algorithm is adjusting as we speak so the CPU rate remains consistent. What I know about mining fits in a thimble, but you have to admit Bitcoin price, if that is a measure of strength you use (I do not), was rising very consistently before the era of Cloud Hashing. I would rather have more mining jobs, and more decentralized mining than larger groups of investors and corporations dominating the heart of Bitcoin, just to earn a fast buck. Maybe a “back to basics” approach to mining is just what the doctor ordered for BTC, and it is price? To me, it matters not, because Bitcoin’s value goes well beyond any mere US Dollar price. If you simply see Bitcoin as an investment, that’s a bigger problem than any relative price drop. Bitcoin is a revolutionary global information technology long before it was a speculative investment asset. Govern your actions accordingly. Would you notice if cloud miners went away tomorrow? Does the Bitcoin currency and community need more home miners who can compete without several blade servers? Share above and comment below.
Bitcoin Remittance Services in Indonesia Could Save Migrant Workers $374 Million Gerrard Hartley Bitcoin RemittanceIn 2010, more than $5 billion was sent back home from Indonesian migrant workers across the world, up 2.44 percent from 2009 ($4.91 billion). That number may seem huge but, in the grand scheme of things, it’s very small. Through the process of remittance, $436 billion looked to be sent back home in total during 2014 – before the banks took their cut through fees. According to a report by the World Bank, in 2013 the global average cost of sending remittances was 8.58 percent – a decline from the previous year but a large cut nonetheless. If a similar average fee remained in 2010, as a similar report suggests, that means that of the $5 billion Indonesian migrant workers were sending back home, the banks were getting their cut of $429 million. But with bitcoin remittance services coming out of the woodwork recently, that cut could be taken down significantly. If they all only took a one percent cut of the bitcoin remittance, remittance services can make sure more than $374 million, that were once lost, can now go straight to the people that deserve it. Bitspark Expanding Bitcoin Remittance Services to Indonesia Looking at this data, one can see there’s a desperate need for people to be able to send money back home through bitcoin. In fact, that’s just what Bitspark saw and decided to react. According to an announcement, Bitspark will be expanding their bitcoin remittance service from Hong Kong to Indonesia in the coming months. Also Read: Coinapult Bitcoin SMS Wallet Allows the World to Send Remittances with Just a Text “We are excited to be able to bring our low cost service to Indonesia in partnership with PT Artabit,” said the Bitspark CEO George Harrap. “Indonesia is an exciting opportunity and a key focus for us, it’s a very different market in terms of logistics and distribution than our existing Philippines services with many people using Post Offices as the primary cash pickup location, not third party remittance stores.” Through Bitspark, Indonesian migrant workers can send their earnings in bitcoin to their families back home with little prior knowledge of the technology. When their family is notified, they can then pick up their cash in the national currency equal to the market value at the time of transfer. “We are the cheapest option to send money to Indonesia and while other remittance services may support either bank pickup or post office pickups, we can do both, quicker and cheaper than the competition. It’s a win-win for the customer.” The best part? There’s no need for the person receiving the sent money to know anything about bitcoin – at all. They never need to know it was sent with bitcoin, and they can have more money on average than before. According to their research, more than 170,000 Indonesian migrant workers are employed in Hong Kong. While Hong Kong doesn’t bring in nearly as much as the worldwide remittance total, the practice of using bitcoin as a tool for remittance is something that could save a lot of people quite a bit of money annually. Most of the Indonesian migrant workers work in Saudi Arabia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and Taiwan. If bitcoin remittance took off in all of those places, money would go back in the pockets of those who earned it.
Mooie boost voor crypto/bitcoin:www.coindesk.com/coinbase-secures-app... Bitcoin services provider Coinbase is set to launch a US exchange on Monday – one reportedly already approved by regulators in 24 jurisdictions, including California and New York. Coinbase has until now acted largely as a brokerage for bitcoin users. By expanding into this new vertical the company will be able to "offer greater security for individuals and institutions to trade bitcoin and monitor real-time pricing of the cryptocurrency", the company told the Wall Street Journal. “Our goal is to become the world’s largest exchange,” said Coinbase chief executive Brian Armstrong, who also indicated that he ultimately plans to expand the exchange to users overseas. For the time being it will be limited to users in the US.
