    Autoreus Stellantis stapt in bij bouwer waterstofsystemen

    AMSTERDAM - Stellantis, moederbedrijf van onder meer Peugeot, Citroën, Opel, Jeep en Chrysler, gaat een groot belang nemen in Symbio, bouwer van transportsystemen op waterstof. De twee bedrijven zijn vrijdag aan de onderhandelingen begonnen. Stellantis zet met zijn bestelauto’s vol in op waterstof.

    Topman Carlos Tavares van Stellantis benadrukt dat het belang in Symbio de autofabrikant helpt bij het uitrollen van de waterstofplannen in Europa en de Verenigde Staten. Stellantis lanceerde eind vorig jaar middelgrote bestelwagens op waterstof. Grote bestelwagen moeten in 2024 op de Europese en in 2025 op de Amerikaanse markt gebracht worden. Daarnaast onderzoekt de autofabrikant de mogelijkheden voor de productie van zware vrachtwagens op waterstof.

    Symbio is een joint venture van automotive technologiebedrijf Faurecia en bandenfabrikant Michelin. Het bedrijf werd in 2019 opgericht en vergroot tot 2028 de productiecapaciteit tot 100.000 waterstofsystemen per jaar en claimt hierin Europees leider te zijn.

    Stellantis en het Franse Symbio hebben nog niet bekend gemaakt hoe groot het belang in Symbio wordt. Zij verwachten dat de acquisitie in de eerste helft van 2023 is afgerond.

    Air Liquide Completes Hydrogen Pipeline to Thyssenkrupp Duisburg

    As part of the H2Stahl real laboratory sponsored by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection BMWK, the industrial gases company Air Liquide has now completed a pipeline to thyssenkrupp Steel in Duisburg in Germany. The approximately 4 kilometer long pipeline connects the Duisburg steel mill site with Air Liquide's hydrogen network in the Ruhr district.

    In the fall of 2023, the trailblazer in Oberhausen, Germany, is scheduled to become the first 20 MW industrial-scale water electrolysis plant to be connected to Air Liquide's H2 network. In the first stage, this will allow customers to be supplied with up to 2,900 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year via pipeline. Provision for expanding capacity by +10 MW is in preparation, and additional initiatives to provide renewable hydrogen for industry and mobility in the region are under development.

    Europe's largest steel site in Duisburg is taking on a pioneering role in the decarbonization of steel production. As early as 2019, the two partners injected hydrogen into a blast furnace for the first time on a test basis to reduce CO2 emissions from conventional steel production. Thyssenkrupp Steel has successfully completed a series of initial tests for hydrogen injection into an existing blast furnace. Although an expansion of these tests is currently suspended due to high natural gas and energy prices, plans to build a direct reduction test facility are continuing unabated, in which the technological leap to hydrogen-based, carbon-neutral hot iron production will be tried out. The technological milestone will be when the first large-scale industrial direct reduction plant with melting units is constructed. The contracts for this are to be awarded shortly. Completion is scheduled for 2026.

    Air Liquide's 200 km long hydrogen pipeline network in the Rhine and Ruhr region offers the best opportunities for launching into the hydrogen future. The pipelines connect hydrogen production plants and major customers in Marl, Oberhausen, Duisburg, Krefeld, Leverkusen, Dormagen, Düsseldorf and other cities in the region.

    SSE Thermal Charts Hydrogen in Humber in UK

    SSE Thermal is developing a first-of-a-kind project in the Humber which would unite hydrogen production, storage and power generation in one location by the middle of this decade. The Aldbrough Hydrogen Pathfinder project will support the evidence base for wider deployment of flexible hydrogen power in the UK’s net zero journey and is a major enabler of SSE Thermal’s wider Humber ambitions.

    Located at SSE Thermal and Equinor’s existing Aldbrough Gas Storage site on the East Yorkshire coast, the project is designed to demonstrate the interactions between hydrogen electrolysis, hydrogen cavern storage and 100% hydrogen dispatchable power.

    The concept would see green power sourced from grid through Renewable PPAs, in compliance with the Low Carbon Hydrogen Standard. Hydrogen would then be produced via a 35MW electrolyser before being stored in a converted salt cavern and then used in a 100% hydrogen-fired turbine, exporting flexible green power back to grid at times of system need. In future, hydrogen storage will also benefit offtakers in other sectors, for example in industry, heat or transport.

    The Aldbrough Hydrogen Pathfinder aims to produce hydrogen and start filling the cavern by 2025, subject to planning consents and reaching a financial investment decision next year.

    Iberdrola to Build Green Hydrogen Plant in Australia

    Iberdrola Australia and hydrogen developer ABEL Energy will build a green hydrogen and green methanol production plant at Bell Bay in northern Tasmania in Australia. The project, called Bell Bay Powerfuels, is backed by the Australian government and will involve an investment of EUR 1.1 billion. Bell Bay Powerfuels will produce 200,000 tonnes of green methanol per year in its first phase of development, rising to 300,000 tonnes in its second phase. This will make the project one of the largest in the world.

    Green methanol will supply the shipping market as well as other applications. From 2021, the world's leading shipping companies are opting for large ships designed to run on ultra-clean-burning green methanol. This decision has major benefits, such as eliminating air pollution in ports, avoiding environmental disasters due to oil spills in marine environments, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions currently generated by the use of fossil fuels.

    Three Rotterdam Hydrogen Projects Receive Subsidy

    To spur the production of green hydrogen, three projects in Rotterdam are receiving grants from the state under the so-called IPCEI regulation. In total, several hundred million euros are involved. The Port of Rotterdam Authority has set up a special site for this new industry on Maasvlakte 2. The electrolysers that produce green hydrogen using green power (offshore wind) will be located here.

    These are plants of Shell (Holland Hydrogen 1), bp and HyCC (H2-Fifty), and of Air Liquide (CurtHYL). The plants each have a capacity of 200 to 250 MW. By comparison, the largest currently operational plant in Europe is 20 MW.

    The central government has announced that a total of seven green hydrogen production projects in the Netherlands will receive subsidies. Three of these are in Rotterdam. The other four are in Zeeland, Amsterdam/North Sea Canal and Groningen.

    Energyn Uses POSCO’s Greenable H2 Steel for Hydrogen Tanks

    The Investor reported that South Korean steelmaker POSCO and local gas containment equipment manufacturer Energyn have localized the production of hydrogen storage tanks, which are used to store highly compressed, gaseous hydrogen in electric vehicle charging stations. Using Posco steel, Energyn is able to make a hydrogen storage tank that could withstand pressure of 100 megapascals and store 1,000 liters of hydrogen.

    According to Energyn, the company had been in dire need of steel strong enough to store highly compressed hydrogen, as compressed hydrogen is prone to explosions. Energyn Vice President Mr Hwang In-ki said “We reviewed Italian steel because there were no steel companies that produce the needed steel in Korea but we found that it took a year to import the Italian steel and that the logistics costs were too high. We succeeded in localizing hydrogen storage tanks thanks to Posco's offer to develop and supply materials with Greenable H2.”

    According to the company, the product is certified by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and Korea Gas Safety Corp for its safety and efficacy.

    Greenable H2 is a brand launched by Posco in October that specializes in production of steel suitable for the transportation, storage and utilization of hydrogen.

    EC Approves Grant for Decarbonization of Acciaierie d’Italia

    European Commission, within the framework of the Just Transition Fund scheme that supports the energy transition of contaminated and degraded areas caused by industrial exploitation, has granted EUE 1 billion to Italy, part of which will go to the decarbonisation of the troubled steelmaker Acciaierie d’Italia’s plant in Taranto, the largest steel plant in Europe, formerly known as Ilva

    JTF will finance new wind farm projects in the area, green hydrogen production plants and geothermal ventures for both the Taranto facility and residential buildings. The funds will support economic diversification, accelerate renewable energy and green hydrogen investment, and retrain employees in Taranto to convert the steelmaking process to green production.

    4,300 workers will be retrained to develop new skills in green steelmaking. Local SMEs will be able to access part of the grant to boost economic diversification, develop skills related to the energy transition and accelerate the development of technology for decarbonisation, the EC explains in a note and adds that a green area of parks and reforestation around Taranto is also planned to restore degraded land.

    Acciaierie d’Italia, the joint venture between ArcelorMittal and state financial body Invitalia, output has collapsed from 10 million tonnes in 2005 to approximately 3 million tonnes this year, when the target of the industrial plan was to reach 6 million tonnes.

    SONATRACH Signs MoU with VNG for Hydrogen in Algeria

    SONATRACH and the German gas company VNG have signed, on the sidelines of the4th edition of the Algerian-German Energy Day, a memorandum of understanding to examine cooperation opportunities for the realization of projects in the field of hydrogen and green ammonia with the aim of exporting them to Germany.

    As a first step, feasibility studies will be carried out on the hydrogen value chain, from production and transport to marketing, with the aim of assessing the potential of commercial projects to be jointly developed in this field.

    Nel ASA Signs Pact for 16 Hydrogen Fueling Stations

    Nel Hydrogen has signed a Capacity Reservation Agreement with an undisclosed US energy company, for the delivery of 16 hydrogen fueling stations to be deployed in the US. Delivery of the fueling equipment is scheduled to commence in Q4 2023 and run throughout 2024.

    In line with the agreement Nel will reserve capacity and start sourcing long-lead items for the fueling stations. The manufacturing of the equipment at Nel’s factory in Herning, Denmark, will commence when a final purchase order is signed.

    The value of the CRA is about USD 7 million and is paid upon signature. The final purchase order (including the CRA fee) is estimated to be about USD 17 million, whereas a final agreement is expected to be made in H1 2023.

    ZeroAvia Gets CAA Green Light for Next Phase of Hydrogen-Electric

    The UK’s Civil Aviation Authority has granted a permit to fly for ZeroAvia’s Dornier 228 aircraft, which has been retrofitted with its prototype hydrogen-electric powertrain. ZeroAvia secured the permit to fly following an extensive ground testing campaign and a rigorous review of the full development program. It means that ZeroAvia, the leader in zero-emission aviation, can now begin the first test flights of its 600kW hydrogen-electric powertrain.

    The 19-seat twin-engine aircraft has been retrofitted in an engineering testbed configuration to incorporate ZeroAvia’s hydrogen-electric engine powering the propellor on its left wing, operating alongside a single Honeywell TPE-331 stock engine on the right for appropriate redundancy to allow the safe testing of the novel propulsion technology.

    The test flights are set to be a landmark achievement for ZeroAvia and the HyFlyer II project, a major R&D program backed by the UK Government’s ATI Programme, which targets the development of a 600kW hydrogen-electric powertrain for 9-19 seat aircraft.

    De Arnhemse batterij die stroom én waterstof kan maken

    Hoe meer zonne- en windenergie we opwekken, hoe meer we van die energie zullen moeten opslaan. In de serie Koplopers bezoekt NU.nl deze winter projecten die ons een kijkje in de toekomst van duurzame energieopslag geven. In dit deel: de 'flowbatterij' die duurzame stroom opslaat én waterstof produceert.

    Op steeds meer plekken in Nederland verrijzen naast wind- en zonneparken grote containers met batterijen. Die accu's moeten de duurzame stroom een tijdje vasthouden. Zo kan zonnestroom ook 's nachts het elektriciteitsnet op en windstroom op momenten dat het niet waait.

    Maar voor al die accupakketten gebruiken we nu de totaal verkeerde technologie, vindt directeur Guido Dalessi van de start-up Elestor. Zijn bedrijf werkt aan een batterij die het mogelijk moet maken om groene elektriciteit veel goedkoper op te slaan.

    Nu zitten er meestal lithiumbatterijen in die opslagcontainers. Dat is hetzelfde soort accu dat in laptops en elektrische auto's zit. Maar voor grootschalige opslag van elektriciteit, die vervolgens over een periode van vele uren of dagen weer moet worden teruggeleverd, is volgens Dalessi een andere technologie nodig.

    Broom en waterstof komen weer samen in de accu

    De accu van Elestor is een flowbatterij. Dat wil zeggen dat die gebruikmaakt van twee grote opslagtanks met daartussen een membraan waar een chemische reactie plaatsvindt. Als de accu leeg is, is een van de tanks gevuld met waterstofbromide (in vloeibare vorm). Onder spanning wordt dat gesplitst in broom en waterstofgas, dat in de andere tank terechtkomt.

    Om weer elektriciteit af te geven, loopt de waterstof door een brandstofcel. Daarin wordt de waterstof weer gekoppeld aan het broom, waarbij elektriciteit vrijkomt. Vervolgens herhaalt dat proces zich. Volgens Elestor kan de accu vele duizenden cycli worden gebruikt zonder dat hij capaciteit verliest.

    Een groot voordeel is dat broom en waterstof overal ter wereld in overvloed aanwezig zijn. Broom zit in zeewater en is een bijproduct van zoutwinning. Lithium is juist relatief schaars, terwijl de vraag snel groeit. Daarom is de prijs van 1 ton lithium in de afgelopen jaren al flink gestegen.

    "Dat je hier en daar containers met lithiumbatterijen ziet staan, heeft ermee te maken dat ze beschikbaar zijn", zegt Dalessi. "Maar het is niet de beste economische oplossing hiervoor."

    Windpark wordt een 'duurzame energiecentrale'

    Bijzonder aan de Arnhemse accu is dat je hem gemakkelijk meer opslagcapaciteit kan geven door de broom- en waterstoftanks groter te maken. Daarbij hoeft het vermogen, dus de hoeveelheid stroom die hij in één keer kan opnemen of afgeven, niet mee te groeien. Dat is bij lithiumaccu's wel het geval.

    Dalessi vergelijkt het met een auto: "Als je heel ver wil kunnen rijden, heb je niet een grotere motor, maar een grotere tank nodig." Daarom is de flowbatterij volgens hem bij uitstek geschikt voor wind- en zonneparken die 'duurzame energiecentrales' willen worden. Met genoeg opslagcapaciteit zouden die uiteindelijk constant stroom kunnen leveren, dus ook als het dagenlang bewolkt of windstil is.

    Accu kan gigantisch worden

    Naast het kantoor van Elestor staat al een vroege versie van de flowbatterij. De tank met broom is begraven, terwijl de waterstof wordt opgeslagen in een iglovormige ballon. Die opstelling neemt nu nog evenveel ruimte in als een paar parkeerplekken, maar in de toekomst moeten de Elestor-batterijen veel groter worden.

    Daarom werkt Elestor ook samen met Vopak, het bedrijf dat bekend is van de gigantische opslagtanks voor olie en andere grondstoffen. De bedrijven hopen uiteindelijk een accu te realiseren die zo groot is, dat hij tienduizenden huishoudens tien uur lang van stroom kan voorzien.

    Straks koppeling met een waterstofnet

    Bijzonder aan de Elestor-accu is dat hij tijdens het opladen waterstof maakt. Dat gas kan worden opgeslagen in een tank, maar zou in de toekomst ook rechtstreeks naar een waterstofnet kunnen stromen. Als de batterij moet worden ontladen, haalt hij weer evenveel waterstof uit datzelfde net.

    "Je hebt dan geen waterstoftank meer nodig, dus het is goedkoper en het kost minder ruimte", zegt Dalessi. Het wordt voor energiebedrijven dan mogelijk om waterstof te produceren als er veel duurzame stroom is en via hetzelfde systeem stroom te produceren als dat nodig is.

    Naar verwachting wordt deze constructie op steeds meer plekken mogelijk. Voor de verduurzaming van de industrie moeten er in de komende jaren door het hele land waterstofleidingen komen. Zo kunnen bedrijven overstappen van aardgas of kolen naar duurzame waterstof.

    30 miljoen euro groeigeld

    Elestor haalde afgelopen zomer 30 miljoen euro aan investeringen binnen, onder meer van het Noorse energiebedrijf Equinor en Vopak. Met dat geld wil de start-up een fabriek bouwen om de accu's grootschalig te produceren.

    Uiteindelijk moet dat een batterij opleveren waarmee energie voor maximaal 5 eurocent per kilowattuur kan worden opgeslagen. Dat is twee à drie keer goedkoper dan opslag in bestaande lithiumaccu's.

    Dalessi ziet dat met vertrouwen tegemoet. "Die 30 miljoen, dat is leuk. Maar de validatie is veel leuker", zegt de ondernemer. "Je kan je wel voorstellen dat Equinor ons dubbelzijdig geroosterd heeft voordat ze instapten. Dat ging niet op basis van een mooi verhaal. Geloof mij dat wij hier aan een zwaar examen onderworpen zijn. Dat vind ik eigenlijk veel belangrijker dan die 30 miljoen."

    Transitus & Proteum to Produce Hydrogen in UK & Europe

    Proteum Energy & Transitus Energy have entered into a Letter of Intent to explore joint development opportunities in the UK, Netherlands, Republic of Ireland and Norway to produce low-carbon hydrogen. The collaboration brings together Transitus’ vision to decarbonize energy production in the North Sea region and Proteum’s proprietary steam non-methane reforming technology coupled with CCS to provide low-cost low-carbon clean hydrogen to the UK and European markets.

    Proteum has developed and operates proprietary modular technology that reforms non-methane hydrocarbons and oxygenated hydrocarbons into low cost, low carbon intensity hydrogen with CCS. Combining its novel SnMR technology with conventional process modules enables Proteum to scale up hydrogen production from 15 metric tonnes per day to 150 tonnes or more, depending upon site requirements.

    Lhyfe & Schaeffler to Build Hydrogen Plant in Germany

    Green hydrogen producer Lhyfe and Schaeffler have agreed on a Letter of Intent for the production and purchase of green hydrogen. The aim is to build and operate an electrolysis plant on Schaeffler’s factory premises in Herzogenaurach. With a capacity of up to 15 megawatts, the plant will produce regional green hydrogen on an industrial scale. Schaeffler intends to not only make its own production climate-neutral, but also drive decarbonization forward in the region.

    The goal is to supply the region with approx. 3.7 tons of green hydrogen every day, starting 2025. Potential customers include municipalities and hydrogen filling stations. The waste heat generated by electrolysis will be fed into the industrial processes within the Schaeffler plant.

    Founded in 2017 in Nantes, Lhyfe enables the regional and local establishment of hydrogen ecosystems and the tailored production of green hydrogen at industrial scale through its production sites.

    Exxon klaagt EU aan

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) Exxon Mobil klaagt de Europese Unie aan over diens besluit om een heffing op te leggen op de hoge winsten van energiebedrijven die worden geboekt dankzij de Russische invasie van Oekraïne en de hoog opgelopen energieprijzen. Dit meldde The Wall Street Journal woensdagavond laat.

    De EU keurde afgelopen najaar een plan goed om de winsten van een aantal energiebedrijven af te romen.

    In de toekomst moeten deze energiebedrijven een belasting van 33 procent betalen over de winst die 20 procent hoger ligt dan de gemiddelde winst tussen 2018 en 2021.

    Exxon zei dat zijn Duitse en Nederlandse dochterondernemingen Mobil Erdgas-Erdöl GmbH en ExxonMobil Producing Netherlands bv, woensdag een rechtszaak zijn gestart bij het Gerecht van de EU in Luxemburg om de opgelegde winstheffing nietig te verklaren.

    Volgens Exxon zouden alleen de lidstaten zelf tot een dergelijke belasting mogen beslissen, en niet de EU, die dit doet op basis van artikel 122, een noodwet.

    Volgens een woordvoerder van de Commissie is de EU wel degelijk bevoegd.

    De nieuwe belasting zou Exxon tot eind 2023 meer dan 2 miljard dollar kunnen kosten.

    Plug Orders 75 Nikola Tre FCEV Hydrogen Trucks

    Nikola and Plug Power have announced a strategic relationship focused on moving the hydrogen economy forward. Plug will purchase up to 75 Nikola Tre FCEVs over the next three years, with the first trucks being delivered in 2023. The Nikola trucks will help to deliver green hydrogen to customers in North America as part of Plug’s commitment to advancing the decarbonization of energy. The acquired FCEVs will be paired with Plug’s liquid hydrogen tankers, which are recognized as market-leading trailers manufactured with unprecedented over-the-road payloads.

    The Nikola Tre fuel cell electric vehicle is an industry leading, hydrogen-powered cabover for longer or continuous metro-regional applications and is expected to have a range of up to 500 miles.

    Nikola’s recently announced hydrogen hub project, located in the City of Buckeye, Ariz., is currently going through a permitting and rezoning process, with the procurement of long-lead equipment also underway. Plug has been selected to provide its fully integrated liquefaction system for the project which will be engineered to produce 30 metric-tons per day in its first phase, scaling up to 150 metric-tons per day. The low carbon hydrogen supply from the hub will further support the deployment of the Nikola Tre FCEV program and Nikola’s hydrogen energy business.

    The companies have also executed a 125 metric-tons per day Green Hydrogen Supply Agreement. This innovative green hydrogen supply and offtake partnership is expected to provide Nikola with a minimum of 100 metric-tons per day of hydrogen, with the option to increase volume over time, and will allow Nikola to source hydrogen from multiple locations across the country as Plug continues to bring on new supply facilities.

    First Hydrogen Expands Its Design of Zero-Emission Vehicles

    First Hydrogen has selected EDAG Group as its design styling partner for its next generation of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. As global mobility engineers with experience in commercial vehicle development, EDAG will support First Hydrogen's goal to make zero-emission vehicles accessible to fleet managers.

    GenH2 Launches Mobile Liquid Hydrogen System

    GenH2, an industry leader in hydrogen infrastructure solutions, announced the launch of its ground-breaking LS20 Mobile Liquid Hydrogen System, an end-to-end liquefication and storage system. The innovative, mobile liquefaction unit offers a space-optimized, fully integrated liquid hydrogen solution to be used in a range of applications from transportation to energy backup to accelerating the use of liquid hydrogen through pilot projects and testing. It will also be utilized as a lab setting for testing material, insulation, thermodynamic properties, and use cases for their applications.

    With a mission to provide light-scale infrastructure solutions for liquid hydrogen, GenH2 designed the LS20 with the capability of producing small amounts of liquid hydrogen in order to provide access to more hydrogen researchers and hydrogen industry players. The LS20 can produce between two and 20kg of liquid hydrogen per day, to provide liquid hydrogen at-the-ready, when and where it is needed. Twenty kg of liquid hydrogen contains nearly 2400 Megajoules of energy and can be readily stored and used within GenH2's ultralight utility tank systems.

    The smallest liquid hydrogen mobile unit currently commercially available, the LS20 is self-sustaining and can run independently with a portable generator or plug into a building's power source. This makes the LS20 ideal for dispensing fuel to multi-purpose drones and providing an emergency power supply to first responders. Additionally, the LS20 units are manufacturing ready to keep up with the increasing demand for hydrogen and enable faster infrastructure build-out and adoption. According to Baik, with its flexibility, compact size, and speed-to-market capabilities, the LS20 is a game-changer for a rapidly growing hydrogen industry.

    The LS20 is designed for those areas where relatively compact systems are necessary to enable hydrogen viability. As a complete system, the LS20 can liquefy, store, and dispense liquid hydrogen from any gaseous hydrogen source, such as a storage tank or an electrolyzer. This compact, flexible system offers the user the ability to provide liquid hydrogen when and where it is needed.

    Cepsa to Produce Hydrogen with Recycled Wastewater in Cadiz

    Cepsa will produce green hydrogen at its San Roque Energy Park in Cádiz in Spain by reusing recycled water from a wastewater treatment plant. To this end, the company has reached an agreement with the public company Aguas y Servicios del Campo de Gibraltar for the supply of recycled water from the urban effluents of the municipalities of San Roque and Los Barrios at its industrial facilities.

    The agreement is another step in the development of Cepsa’s Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley, the largest green hydrogen project in Europe which will be located at its Energy Parks in Huelva and San Roque with a 3 billion euro investment.

    This is one of Spain’s groundbreaking circular economy projects in industrial urban water use, a practice that, according to the European Union, can reduce global drinkable water consumption by 5%.

    The treatment and purification of urban water for industrial use will be carried out in the new wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) that the Association of Municipalities and Arcgisa plan to build on land near the Energy Park facilities, which was ceded years ago by Cepsa to the City of San Roque. This new facility will have tertiary treatment for wastewater that will amount to 4.2 million cubic meters per year, which will no longer be dumped into the sea, but instead reused by Cepsa in its facilities. This is equivalent to the yearly average water consumption of more than 21,000 four-person households.

    Air Liquide Gets Support for 2 electrolyzer projects inNetherlands

    Air Liquide has welcomed the Dutch State decision to support its large-scale renewable hydrogen projects, named ELYgator and CurtHyl, through the Important Project of Common European Interest Hy2Use program. These electrolyzer projects, which will each have a capacity of 200 MW, will significantly contribute to the decarbonization of the Dutch and neighboring countries’ industry and support the growth of clean mobility markets.

    Both electrolyzers will run on renewable electricity. The two projects will produce a total of around 30,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year without generating any CO2 emissions. Compared to a traditional process, this will avoid the emission of more than 5 million tonnes of CO2 over the period of operation. The ELYgator project will be located in Terneuzen, the Netherlands. The CurtHyl project will be located at the Maasvlakte 2 conversion park in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Those two world scale electrolyzers will be integrated into the existing Air Liquide portfolio of assets and enable the supply of low-carbon hydrogen to multiple customers of the industry and the mobility markets.

    Pioneering projects such as ELYgator and CurtHyl contribute to the national and European climate ambitions as hydrogen will play a key role in decarbonization, particularly for hard-to-abate industry and mobility sectors. The grant award is a major step towards the final investment decision, with both projects subject to regulatory approvals.
