    'Nederland moet nu vaccin bestellen'

    De Nederlandse regering moet nu al vaccins bestellen tegen de varkensgriep. Dat zegt viroloog Ab Osterhaus van het Erasmus Medisch Centrum en hoofd van het Nationaal Influenza Centrum. Volgens hem is er genoeg kennis over de griep aanwezig om er een passend vaccin tegen te maken. De productie duurt volgens hem vier tot zes maanden, inclusief de testfase. ,,Waarom zouden we wachten?''

    Osterhaus is lid van het Outbreak Management Team, een team van deskundigen dat de minister adviseert. Morgen komt het team bijeen om te overleggen.

    Osterhaus heeft in het verleden regelmatig kritiek geuit op de plannen die klaar lagen om een pandemie te bestrijden. Maar volgens hem is de laatste jaren veel verbeterd. ,,Burgemeesters hebben nu veel duidelijker instructies om het openbare leven plat te leggen in gevaarlijke tijden, dus om bijvoorbeeld theatervoorstellingen en voetbalwedstrijden te verbieden. Daardoor zullen minder mensen worden besmet en krijg je ook minder druk op de ziekenhuizen.''

    Volgens Osterhuis liggen er inmiddels genoeg virusremmers op de plank om de griep bij besmette patiënten af te remmen. ,,Als er dan ook nog redelijk snel vaccins beschikbaar zijn, zou je de situatie onder controle kunnen houden.''

    Nederlanders hamsteren massaal mondkapjes om zich te beschermen tegen varkensgriep. Bij diverse bedrijven in medische producten is een grote toeloop op dit soort artikelen ontstaan. Niet alleen artsen en apothekers, maar ook particulieren en bedrijven slaan de kapjes in groten getale in.

    Er zijn drie categorieën. De Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie WHO raadt aan minimaal voor de tweede te kiezen. Bij SARS en de vogelgriep werd dit toen ook geadviseerd. ,,De vraag blijft of ze afdoende beschermen'', oppert Vermeulen. Directeur Roel Coutinho van het Centrum voor Infectieziektebestrijding (CIb) zei maandag dat het dragen van een mondkapje geen enkele zin heeft om zich tegen het virus te beschermen.

    Reizen naar Mexico afgeraden
    Nederland raadt het inmiddels af om naar Mexico te reizen, als dat niet strikt noodzakelijk is. Eerder deden Frankrijk, Engeland en de VS al hetzelfde. Daarnaast sluit Engeland de ambassade in Mexico City.

    De WHO stelde dinsdag op een persconferentie nog dat het niet nodig is op te roepen tot reisbeperkingen. Ook de Europese Commissie vond het maandag nog niet nodig te waarschuwen voor een bezoek aan Spanje.

    Alarmfaseniveau 4
    De WHO heeft het alarmniveau voor de dodelijke varkensgriep van fase drie naar vier te verhoogt. Het risico op een pandemie blijft stijgen, na Spanje en Schotland hebben vandaag ook Israël en Nieuw Zeeland besmettingen met de varkensgriep gemeld.

    Volgens de WHO verspreidt het virus zich van mens op mens en kunnen hele gemeenschappen worden geraakt door het virus dat in Mexico inmiddels aan ruim 150 mensen het leven heeft gekost. In de ziekenhuizen in Mexico liggen bijna achthonderd mensen die mogelijk zijn besmet met het H1N1-virus.

    In Spanje is een tweede geval van besmetting met het varkensgriepvirus bevestigd. De 24-jarige patiënt in Valencia is samen met de maandag al in Almansa opgenomen student in Mexico geweest.

    Nieuw-Zeeland heeft dinsdag zeker drie gevallen van varkensgriep bevestigd. De autoriteiten gaan ervan uit dat in totaal tien mensen het virus hebben opgelopen.

    In Israël blijkt 26-jarige man die recentelijk was teruggekeerd uit Mexico het virus te hebben opgelopen. Dokters in Israël wachtten nog op testresultaten bij een andere man, die ook naar Mexico is geweest en in het ziekenhuis ligt.

    In Groot-Brittannië zijn twee mensen besmet de nieuwe variant van het H1N1-virus. Zeven van de 22 mensen met wie het tweetal contact heeft gehad, vertonen milde verschijnselen van de ziekte, die ook Mexicaanse griep wordt genoemd.

    Frankrijk wacht nog op de testresultaten van een vrouw die onlangs terugkeerde uit Mexico.

    VS werkt aan vaccin
    In de Verenigde Staten zijn inmiddels zeker veertig gevallen vastgesteld. De Verenigde Staten werken inmiddels aan een vaccin tegen de varkensgriep, aldus de wereldgezondheidsorganisatie WHO. Zo'n inenting bestaat nog niet omdat het om een gemuteerd H1N1-virus gaat. Mensen die al varkensgriep hebben, lijken tot nog toe goed te reageren op medicijnen, zoals Tamiflu en Relenza.

    De Amerikaanse president Barack Obama maande de bevolking van de Verenigde Staten tot kalmte. Hij noemt de verspreiding van het virus in Mexico en de Verenigde Staten ,,reden tot zorg'', maar niet alarmerend, zei Obama tijdens een bijeenkomst van de Nationale Academie van Wetenschappen in Washington.

    Volgens de president is zondag de noodtoestand voor de publieke gezondheid ,,uit voorzorg'' afgekondigd, om er zeker van te zijn dat de overheid alle middelen tot haar beschikking heeft om snel en effectief te reageren.

    Mogelijk drie gevallen varkensgriep in Duitsland

    BERLIJN (ANP) - Duitsland onderzoekt drie mogelijke gevallen van varkensgriep. Dat maakte het ministerie van Volksgezondheid dinsdag bekend. Het gaat om een echtpaar dat uit Mexico is teruggekeerd en een man die positief is getest op griep. Of de man varkensgriep heeft, moet nog worden vastgesteld, aldus staatssecretaris Klaus Theo Schröder in Berlijn.

    Schröder benadrukte dat er geen concreet gevaar bestaat voor de bevolking in Duitsland.

    WHO: Landen moeten zich op ergste voorbereiden

    GENEVE (ANP) - Een varkensgrieppandemie is niet onvermijdelijk, maar landen zouden zich op het ergste moeten voorbereiden. Dit heeft de plaatsvervangend directeur-generaal van de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie (WHO), Keiji Fukuda, dinsdag in Genève gezegd.

    ,,Landen zouden de gelegenheid moeten aangrijpen om zich op een pandemie voor te bereiden'', aldus de VN-functionaris.

    Het aantal sterfgevallen dat waarschijnlijk te wijten is aan vogelgriep, ligt in Mexico op ongeveer 150. Dinsdag is ook in andere landen verspreiding van het virus geconstateerd.

    Het aantal varkensgriepgevallen dat in laboratoria is bevestigd, is inmiddels opgelopen tot 79, aldus de WHO.

    JERUZALEM (ANP) - In Israël is dinsdag het tweede geval van varkensgriep geconstateerd. Dat meldde de Israëlische legerradio.

    Het eerste geval van varkensgriep in Israël werd eerder op de dag vastgesteld. Het gaat om twee mannen van 26 en 49 jaar die recentelijk zijn teruggekeerd uit Mexico en die in het ziekenhuis waren opgenomen.

    Bij Thaly in Voorschoten vliegen ze met duizenden per dag de deur uit. Daarbij verkoopt de groothandel eveneens veel desinfectiemiddelen. ,,Nadat je een deurkruk hebt aangeraakt, moet je eigenlijk alweer je handen reinigen'', aldus Robert Leefers.

    Veel leveranciers kunnen de vraag niet bijbenen en raken door de voorraad heen. Hetzelfde gebeurt bij groothandels. ,Jarenlang werd er bijna niets verkocht en nu ontstond er een ware 'run''', zegt Bram Vermeulen van Vermeulen Medical.

    Voorgevormde kapjes

    Vooral de voorgevormde, zwaardere kapjes van een paar euro zijn in trek. De 'lapjes' die tandartsen dragen, beschermen te weinig.

    Erasmus MC voert zes varkensgrieptests uit

    ROTTERDAM (ANP) - De afdeling virologie van het Erasmus MC heeft tot nu toe zes monsters onderzocht van mensen die zich met symptomen van de varkensgriep bij hun huisarts hadden gemeld. Alle monsters zijn negatief bevonden, meldde een zegsvrouw dinsdag.

    Wanneer huisartsen symptomen van de ziekte signaleren, worden patiënten doorverwezen naar het Erasmus MC. Het RIVM roept mensen op om zich te melden bij de huisarts als ze sinds 17 april zijn teruggekeerd uit Mexico, meer dan 38,5 graden koorts hebben en luchtwegklachten.

    Van patiënten die onraad vermoeden, wordt slijm uit de keel afgenomen en opgestuurd naar Rotterdam. Mocht een besmetting worden geconstateerd, dan fungeert het Erasmus MC als opvang- en kenniscentrum.

    De varkensgriep eiste de afgelopen dagen in Mexico al van mogelijk meer dan 150 mensen het leven.

    Interesting to see many of the swine flu movers from yesterday bounce back.
    Smithfield Foods [SFD 9.54 0.50 (+5.53%) ] , the world's largest pork producer, is making back some of its 12 percent slide on the realization that you simply can't get the pig flu from eating pork.
    "The public’s understanding of swine flu is badly wrong," wrote Dennis Gartman in The Gartman Letter this morning. "It has nothing…or rather inordinately little… to do with livestock. The WHO has already issued a statement noting that 'swine flu' is not spread by livestock, and the pork producers have had their public relations organization working overtime to report that meat is absolutely safe to eat and that there is nothing other than a verbal relationship between 'swine flu' and livestock."
    Wow. There is currently no stock on the NYSE that trades under the ticker "P-I-G", but going by this panic-induced, verbal association game yesterday, I suspect it would have traded down big. And probably would have been a good buy today. Explain that efficient market theorists.
    Royal Caribbean [RCL 12.45 0.35 (+2.89%) ] , airlines and others that were to suffer from lower travel demand, are also now higher.
    On the biotech side though, Baxter [BAX 50.25 1.02 (+2.07%) ] , Crucell [CRXL 20.35 0.17 (+0.84%) ] , Gilead [GILD 48.09 0.56 (+1.18%) ] , and others that stand to benefit from increased demand for vaccinations or flu treatments, are picking up were they left off.
    We shall see if blind panic comes back into the market if the World Health Organization declares the flu an official pandemic. I suspect that many traders may treat that headline as another possible buying opportunity.

    BOGOTA -(Dow Jones)- Colombian health authorities identified 42 suspected cases of swine flu, Health and Labor Minister Diego Palacio said Tuesday. He said four cases are generating more concern than the others because their health situation is more serious.
    The 42 patients have flu-like symptoms and recently were in Mexico, Palacio said. They are under medical observation and samples were taken from them and are being sent for testing, he added.

    WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- President Barack Obama asked lawmakers to add $1.5 billion to the administration's supplemental budget request for the current fiscal year to help the government respond to a potential worsening of the swine flu outbreak.
    "In our opinion, this is about prudent planning," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Tuesday.
    The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the number of confirmed swine-flu cases rose to 64 in the U.S., including "a number of hospitalizations." The number of confirmed cases also rose elsewhere around the world, prompting the World Health Organization to raise its global alert to phase 4 from phase 3.

    To further speed the vaccine hunt, the CDC has shipped a raw sample of the new virus to one manufacturer — Gaithersburg, Md.-based MedImmune LLC, which sells the only flu vaccine given via a nasal spray instead of a shot. MedImmune thus uses a slightly different approach to creating influenza strains suitable for that spray, Donis explained.

    First researchers had to grow enough virus samples, culled from a handful of patients, to work with. Influenza virus traditionally is grown by injecting it into fertilized chicken eggs, but this novel virus didn't grow easily there. There's an alternative, growing it in vats of cells instead, but most flu vaccine manufacturers today still rely on eggs.

    "There is a little bit of concern there," said CDC's Donis, whose laboratory eventually created three samples that did grow in eggs, just slowly. More work is under way to try to improve that.
    Next, using a technique called reverse genetics, scientists are selecting genes for the swine flu's H and N antigens to create a customized strain and look for signs that it will prompt a good immune response. Then manufacturers would get the strain to start their own production supply, which could take another two months.
    "It's worth taking that time at the very beginning to really make sure you've got exactly what you want," said MedImmune senior director Dr. Kathleen Coelingh. "We've got to get this right."
    But those initial pilot lots will go straight into human safety tests already being planned, Goodman said. Flu vaccine in general is very safe. But in 1976, thousands claimed side effects from a swine flu vaccine administered after an outbreak at Fort Dix, N.J., that never spread.

    For now, manufacturers are studying production options. Sanofi Pasteur, the world's largest flu vaccine maker, just opened a new U.S. factory but if necessary could keep its older one open as well just for swine flu vaccine production, said spokesman Len Lavenda. It also produces vaccine at a factory in France.
    At Novartis AG, spokesman Eric Althoff said the company is studying which of its two technologies for vaccine-making would be better. The Swiss drugmaker can make vaccines both in eggs and in cell culture.

    Obama wil 1,5 miljard voor aanpak griep 28-04-09



    De Amerikaanse president Obama wil van het Congres 1,5 miljard dollar om de varkensgriep te bestrijden. Met dat geld moet de huidige medicijnenvoorraad tegen de griep worden aangevuld. Ook wil Obama de verspreiding van het virus op de voet volgen.

    Bezorgdheid
    Hij voegde eraan toe dat de laatste ontwikkelingen voor hem geen reden zijn tot extra bezorgdheid.

    In de VS zijn tot nu toe vijf mensen opgenomen met ernstige griepverschijnselen. Ruim 60 mensen zijn besmet, van wie meer dan 40 in New York.

    A total of 159 people have died of pneumonia that may have been caused by the mutant H1N1 virus, Jose Cordova, the health secretary, said.
    Ten of those had died in the last 24 hours.
    However, there had been a substantial slowdown in the number of fatalities compared to the period from Sunday to Monday, when 46 people died in a 24-hour period, he said.
    Mr Cordova said that the drop in deaths was due to people taking anti-viral drugs soon after they started displaying symptoms.
    The first victims were treated with antibiotics and other flu medicine as Mexican health workers struggled to find out what was going on.
    "It is crucial to treat the problem early, preferably within the first one or two days," Mr Cordova said.
    Mexican authorities have also revised down the confirmed death toll from swine flu from 20 to seven. No one outside Mexico has died.
    Despite the slowdown in deaths, the overall number of people hospitalised with swine flu symptoms has continued to rise
    By Tuesday night, there had been a total of 2,498 taken into care with respiratory problems believed to be related to swine flu. Of these 1,311 were still bed ridden and fighting the sickness while the others had left after successfully responding to treatment.
    Mr Cordova expressed hopes that the infection rate would drop in the next few days thanks to shut downs of public places including schools, cinemas, bars, museums and other spaces.
    "These next few days are crucial in seeing how the virus threat will develop," he said, describing the situation as "more or less stable".
    In response to the spread of the disease, Mexican authorities have banned restaurants and cafes from serving all food except take away. Schools have also been closed.

    Two L.A. County deaths possibly related to swine flu, coroner says [Updated]

    The Los Angeles County coroner's office is investigating two recent deaths that officials say could be related to the recent global swine flu outbreak. However, no tests have come back positive for the swine flu, and medical examiners have not officially determined what caused the deaths.

    Updated at 9:30 a.m.: Coroner's spokesman Craig Harvey said his office would collect specimens from the deceased and send them to the county public health department, which would determine whether either person died from the swine flu. If so, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would be notified, Harvey said.]
    Coroner's spokesman Craig Harvey said Bellflower Medical Center reported the death of a 33-year Long Beach resident Monday afternoon from symptoms resembling swine flu.
    "It's that diagnosis that needs to be confirmed," Harvey said. "An autopsy will be performed to establish the cause of death."
    The man was taken to the hospital Saturday, complaining of shortness of breath and lymphoma. Doctors later diagnosed the patient with pneumonia, Harvey said.
    The second case involves a 45-year-old man from La Mirada, whose death was reported Monday to the coroner's office. The man died April 22 at Coast Plaza Doctor's Hospital in Norwalk.
    Doctors said the man died of pneumonia but the L.A. County Health Department refused to accept the death certificate signed by the private doctor, Harvey said. The case was then referred to the coroner's office, which will conduct further investigation.
    If confirmed, the deaths would be the first reported in the United States from the swine flu.

    Varkensgriep nu ook in Duitsland
    Ook in Duitsland is de varkensgriep vastgesteld. Het nieuwe griepvirus is volgens het ministerie in de deelstaat Beieren geconstateerd bij een patiënt uit de buurt van de stad Regensburg.

    Duitsland is het achtste land waar het virus is vastgesteld. Behalve in Mexico komt het virus voor in de VS, Canada, Groot-Brittannië, Spanje, Nieuw-Zeeland en Israël. In Oostenrijk is een vrouw waarschijnlijk besmet.

    In Bilthoven komt vandaag een team van deskundigen bijeen om te overleggen over de varkensgriep. De wetenschappers bespreken de maatregelen die Nederland moet nemen om de griep te lijf te gaan.

    En heeft de Schwine-flu Den Haag al bereikt? Je zou toch verwachten dat minister Klink iets van zich had laten horen. Net zo afwezig als de minister van EZ (de huiskamervraag: wie is dat?) in het "crisis"-debat. Ooit iets gehoord/vernomen van een economisch crisisteam?
    Klink??? Die is met vakantie.


    De Tweede Kamer is tot maandag 11 mei
    met reces.

    De eerst volgende plenaire vergadering
    heeft plaats op dinsdag 12 mei
    aanstaande.
