Leaked documents show US spied on allies - but it's no huge shock, analyst suggests
The highly sensitive Pentagon documents leaked and published online recently reveal the extent of US spying on its own allies.
Included in the revelations is the alleged spying on South Korea by Washington, which is said to have gathered details of private conversations between senior South Korean officials about Ukraine.
But military analyst Sean Bell indicates news that the US spied on allies is not necessarily the biggest shock of the security breach.
"We as a nation and loads of others spy on each other all the time," he tells Sky News.
Bell says China has around 700 satellites, half of which are military.
"There's about 50 or 60 passages a day over the UK. They're listening, they're watching, they're detecting what's going on."
He says South Korea is "the interesting story" as it suggests the US was putting pressure on the country to provide weapons to Ukraine.
"South Korea was really worried those weapons might be visible to Russia, and therefore might force Russia to help North Korea. So there are implications for that," Bell explains.
But overall, the "the harsh reality is all nations spy", he adds.
"It helps making informed decisions.
"We do it against our enemies and our friends.
"These revelations are embarrassing, but they're unlikely to have any long term implications."
