Aberdeen City & bp Sign JV Pact to Develop City Hydrogen Hub Strategic Research Institute Published on : 14 Mar, 2022, 5:30 am Aberdeen City Council & bp have signed an agreement to form a joint venture partnership that will deliver a scalable green hydrogen production, storage and distribution facility in the city powered by renewable energy. Aberdeen City Council and bp, which will operate the joint venture under the name bp Aberdeen Hydrogen Energy Limited, have committed GBP 3 million for initial design work with a final investment decision for the phase one facility build expected in early 2023. The Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub is to be developed in three phases in response to growing demands for hydrogen. Phase one, which involves delivery of a green hydrogen production and transport refuelling facility powered by a solar farm, is targeting first production from 2024, delivering over 800 kilograms of green hydrogen per day, enough to fuel 25 buses and a similar number of other fleet vehicles. Future phases could see production scaled up through further investment to supply larger volumes of green hydrogen for rail, freight and marine, as well as supply of hydrogen for heat and potentially export. This expansion would be enabled by the expected increased availability of local renewable energy sources, including developments that emerge from the ScotWind offshore wind leasing round. The Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub programme will support Aberdeen City Council’s ambitions to create a climate positive city and build inclusive growth through supporting hydrogen supply chain development, skills and training, and wider community benefits. A study commissioned by?Aberdeen City Council on the growth in demand for hydrogen power estimates that if the hydrogen hub enables the export of renewable hydrogen, then up to 700 skilled jobs could be created in the hydrogen industry by 2030.
ABB to Electrify 2 Green Hydrogen Plants North America Strategic Research Institute Published on : 15 Mar, 2022, 5:30 am ABB has been awarded two major contracts by Plug Power Inc, a leading provider of turnkey solutions for the global green hydrogen economy, to provide the electrical systems for two new hydrogen plants in North America, set to collectively produce 60 tons of green hydrogen per day. Green hydrogen is produced with renewable energy sources and emits zero carbon when used as fuel. The first plant, Project Gateway, in Genesee County, New York, will be North America’s largest green hydrogen production facility, providing the northeastern US daily with 45 metric tons of green liquid hydrogen, which contains as much energy as 126 tons of gasoline and equates to 14,000 tons of CO2 per year. ABB will provide the full electrical system encased in an ABB eHouse solution – a prefabricated, walk-in, modular outdoor substation hosting a range of electrical, automation and ancillary equipment that provides the site and process power. ABB’s prefabricated and pre-tested solution reduces both the costs and time needed for installation and commissioning. ABB will also supply gas and air insulated switchgear, low voltage motor control centers, along with low voltage variable speed drives for auxiliary applications. Medium voltage VSDs will be applied to multiple motors in sync bypass mode. Used as compressor starters, these drives allow smooth process control, and reduce stress to equipment and utility loads by limiting inrush current and power demand during the process start. The plant will use Plug Power’s state-of-the-art proton exchange membrane electrolyzers to split water into hydrogen and oxygen through an electrochemical process, using clean New York hydropower. With a similar scope of work, Plug Power’s second plant, Peachtree, in Camden County, Georgia, will produce 15 tons of liquid green hydrogen per day using 100 percent renewable energy, serving customers in the southeastern US. The hydrogen produced will be used for logistics and transportation sectors, enabling users to replace fossil fuels in on-road applications such as heavy-duty freight vehicles and forklifts.

Tenaris Line Pipe Qualified for Hydrogen Transportation Strategic Research Institute Published on : 18 Mar, 2022, 4:47 am Hydrogen is regarded as a central solution to the global strategy to achieve a net zero future. To address climate change Tenaris is committed to reducing its carbon emissions and developing a portfolio of products for the energy transition. In support of these actions, Tenaris’s line pipe technology team has carried out an experimental activity to qualify medium and large diameter pipes of up to X70 grade for high-pressure gaseous hydrogen transportation with a hydrogen content of up to 100 percent at 200 bars. Pressurized pipelines are considered a relevant solution for transporting molecular energy from the point of production or storage to the point of consumption. Tenaris Pipeline Technology Senior Director and Chairman of the DNV H2PIPE joint industry project on hydrogen pipelines, Philippe Darcis, explains that “Due to the susceptibility of steel to hydrogen embrittlement the pipeline material needs to be qualified to demonstrate its readiness for hydrogen transportation and the new standards and guidelines require specific characterizations in gaseous hydrogen environments.” In fact, hydrogen atoms can easily diffuse into the metal’s crystalline lattice due to their small size. The interaction with the metal’s microstructure can eventually result in the degradation of the metal’s mechanical properties, mainly involving a loss in mechanical ductility, reduced fracture toughness and loss of fatigue resistance. Purity, temperature, and pressure can affect the severity of the embrittlement. Thus, it is fundamental to determine how new and existing pipeline materials will react to the different compositions, pressures, and temperatures these pipelines will operate under.

Toyota Develops Storage Module for Hydrogen Tanks Strategic Research Institute Published on : 21 Mar, 2022, 5:30 am Toyota Motor Corporation has developed a hydrogen storage module that integrates multiple resin high-pressure hydrogen tanks at 70 MPa for automobiles, already proven in the Mirai fuel cell vehicle, and safety devices such as a hydrogen detector and an automatic shut-off switch. Toyota exhibited a conceptual model of this module at the International Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Expo held at Tokyo Big Sight from March 16 to 18. In connection to this module development, Toyota will also continue with verification of transport safety and hydrogen storage quantity utilizing the agile development site of a race, etc. in the same way as last year. This year as well, verification will start with the Super Taikyu Race in Suzuka, to be held from March 19 to 20. Toyota has been working on initiatives toward realizing a hydrogen-based society, such as the sale of FCEVs and FC systems. As part of this, the 70 MPa resin high-pressure hydrogen tank developed for automobiles is now the subject of numerous requests from those who would like to use it in railways, shipping, and port cargo handling, as well as FC generators. However, using the same tanks in various fields requires meeting different safety standards and adjusting to each environment. For this reason, they are not currently used for a wide range of purposes. The government is working on a range of studies to promote the early adoption of hydrogen while ensuring safety, and Toyota and its business partners are ready to offer cooperation and support. Toyota developed this hydrogen storage module as a way to answer these demands and expand the use of hydrogen. Starting last year, Toyota has been carrying out repeated verification testing with its business partners throughout the whole phases of producing, transporting, and using at the Super Taikyu Series venue, a place for agile development that embodies the idea of “making ever-better motorsports-bred cars.” This is also connected to the development of this conceptual model. This year too, starting with the Super Taikyu Race in Suzuka (March 19 to 20), Toyota will be working on connecting with new business partners and carrying out verification testing with the idea of expanding hydrogen use even further. This race will be used to verify the transport of large amounts of hydrogen by an FC truck that will carry resin high-pressure hydrogen tanks for automobiles with large volumes (2 sets of 16-tank packages) filled at 45 MPa. This verification will be implemented upon the certification of the vessels by the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, and is an initiative that will also contribute to the studies being carried out by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism for encouraging the use of hydrogen. In keeping pace with studies by the government, Toyota will continue to use opportunities such as the Super Taikyu races to verify its capabilities in utilizing the 70 MPa which is certified only for use in automobiles. In addition to the three variations of hydrogen capacity based on the resin high-pressure hydrogen tank used in the Mirai, large modules that use tanks with enlarged capacities are also included in the lineup. Feature 1: Storing and transporting hydrogen The module unit, which packages safety-assured resin hydrogen tanks for use in automobiles, is integrated with various safety devices that automatically monitor operation status to ensure the module is extremely safe. As storing and transporting hydrogen more safely and efficiently can be done through high-capacity hydrogen loads, it is possible to use hydrogen-based energy in a range of locations where hydrogen filling is difficult, such as ports or mountain areas.
