Mazda backs carbon-neutral biofuel research Mazda is currently involved in joint research projects and studies as part of an ongoing industry-academia-government collaboration to promote the wide-spread adoption of biofuels from microalgae growth. As part of its ‘Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030’ long-term technology development programme, the company is committed to reducing its average ‘Well-to-Wheel’ CO2 emissions to 50% of 2010 levels by 2030, and to 90% by 2050. Expecting that internal combustion engines combined with some form of electrification will still account for around 95% of the vehicles it produces in 2030, and that liquid fuel will remain dominant in the automotive industry until at least 2040, Mazda considers a renewable liquid fuel essential to drastic CO2 reduction. Because, when burnt, algae biofuel only releases CO2 recently removed from the atmosphere via photosynthesis as the algae grows. Mazda considers its development to be critical to achieving the carbon-neutrality of cars powered by the internal combustion engine. Microalgae biofuel has numerous positive attributes as a renewable liquid fuel. Algae fuels can be farmed on land unsuitable for agriculture, can be grown with minimal impact on freshwater resources, can be produced using saline and wastewater, have a high flash point, and are biodegradable and relatively harmless to the environment if spilled. The United States Department of Energy estimates that if algae fuel replaced all petroleum fuel in the USA, its growth would require an area equivalent to just 0.42% of the American land mass -less than one seventh of the area of corn harvest in the USA in the year 2000. Improving productivity and reducing costs are fundamental to the widespread future availability of algae biofuels. To that end, Mazda is lending research-accelerating technical support to both research into genome editing by Hiroshima University and the study of plant physiology by the Tokyo Institute of Technology, which is intended to lead to a breakthrough in these areas. De All Ordinaries in Sydney eindigde 0,4 procent hoger. De Kospi in Seoul klom 0,5 procent. Zwaargewicht Samsung verloor 0,4 procent.
Japan infuriated by South Korean order of Nippon Steel to compensate WWII workers Reuters reported that Japan denounced South Korea's Supreme Court ruling ordering Japan's Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp must compensate four South Koreans for their forced labour during World War Two as unthinkable. The ruling prompted a swift and angry reaction from Tokyo with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, speaking in parliament, said the matter had been completely and finally settled by the 1965 treaty and this verdict is a decision that is impossible in light of international law Foreign Minister Taro Kono, who summoned South Korean ambassador Lee Su-hoon after the verdict, said it fundamentally overturned the legal basis for bilateral friendship since the normalisation of ties in 1965. Kono told reporters he hoped Seoul would do what was needed to prevent the matter from affecting cooperation between the two US Asian allies in trying to rein in North Korea's nuclear program. Japanese Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Kotaro Nogami told a news conference that if Seoul did not respond promptly, Tokyo would consider its options, including international arbitration. There are 14 similar damages lawsuits pending in court against firms including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd and Mitsui Mining and Smelting Co Ltd. A panel endorsed by the South Korean government in 2012 unveiled a list of 299 Japanese companies which it said committed "war crimes". Source : Reuters
JFE cuts profit outlook on severe rains and BF glitches Reuters reported that Japan’s No 2 steelmaker JFE Holdings cut it’s annual profit forecasts on Tuesday due to technical glitches at their plants and higher costs of electricity, distribution and subsidiary materials. JFE trimmed its recurring profit forecast for the year to March 31 to JPY 250 billion (USD 2.2 billion) from an earlier estimate of JPY 260 billion. The reduction comes as JFE now expects to produce 28 million tonnes of crude steel for the year, down from its previous plan of 29 million tonnes, due to severe rains in July and September and technical trouble at one of its three blast furnaces in western Japan. JFE Executive Vice President Shinichi Okada told a news conference “The No 2 furnace in Kurashiki steelworks has been shut since Oct 23 due to technical trouble, but we expect the furnace to resume operation in November and return to full operation in late December.” Source : Reuters

Honda and GAC Group JV to build Chinese plant for new-energy cars Reuters reported that Honda Motor Co's joint venture with GAC Group will invest CNY 3.27 billion (USD 469 million) in new-energy vehicle production in China. The Honda-GAC joint venture will build a new plant with capacity to produce 170,000 new-energy vehciles a year, the filing said. New-energy vehicles include all electric battery cars as well as plug-in hybrid vehicles. A source close to the joint venture said that the plan envisages Japan's Honda producing GAC's Trumpchi GS4, a battery powered compact SUV, to sell through Honda outlets operated with GAC. The Honda-produced car is likely to be sold with the Trumpchi badge rather than Honda's, the source said, declining to be named because he is not authorised to speak on the matter. It is a highly unusual arrangement but provides a quick way to meet Beijing’s requirements for such vehicles to represent 10 percent of an auto manufacturer’s production by 2019. Source : Reuters
Mazda sale update for first 6 months Global retail volume for the first six months of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2019 was 796 thousand units, up 1.7 % year on year, a record high for the first six months of any year, owing to the solid sales of crossover models such as Mazda CX-5 and Mazda CX-8 in global markets, as well as with the effect of launch of updated products. By market, the sales in Japan and the ASEAN market such as Thailand and Vietnam, significantly contributed to growth in global retail volume. Retail volume by market was as follows. Japan Retail volume was 103 thousand units, up 6.7 % year on year, due to the contribution of the CX-8 which remained strong since the introduction, as well as the high level of sales volume of the CX-5 which was equivalent to the previous year. North America Despite a difficult condition in the sedan market, any impact in that segment was offset by brisk sales of the all crossover models in the U.S., where retail volume was 151 thousand units and equivalent to the previous year. For North America as a whole, retail volume was 222 thousand units, up 1.6 % year on year, with increased sales volume in Canada and Mexico. Europe Although the sales declined in Germany, European retail volume was 135 thousand units, up 2.4 % year on year due to the increased sales in Russia significantly outpacing the market’s growth, and also year-on-year growth, in the other markets like Spain. By model, robust sales were recorded for the CX-5. China Retail volume was 133 thousand units, down 10.6 % year on year due to the reduction in sales of major models including Mazda3, being impacted by the market environment weakening from the demand slowdown. Other markets Retail volume in total was 202 thousand units, up 8.5 % year on year. In the key market of Australia, although retail volume was 56 thousand units, down 5.2 % year on year, the CX-5 continued to sell well, and the newly launched CX-8 got off to a solid start. In the ASEAN market, the sales in Thailand and Vietnam were strong, and also in other markets such as Chile with record sales. Financial performance on a consolidated basis for the first six months of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2019 was as follows. Net sales amounted to JPY 1,729.1 billion, an increase of JPY 72.5 billion or 4.4 % compared to the corresponding period in the previous fiscal year mainly due to the increased sales and vehicle mix improvement. Operating income amounted to JPY 30.9 billion, a decrease of JPY 45.6 billion or 59.6 % compared to the corresponding period in the previous fiscal year, resulting from the increase in marketing expense due to the intensifying competition, and exchange rate impact, and quality-related costs, etc. which offset increased sales and cost improvement. Ordinary income amounted to JPY 54.5 billion, a decrease of JPY 41.9 billion or 43.5 % compared to the corresponding period in the previous fiscal year, with the posting of a JPY 19.2 billion gain from equity in net income of affiliated companies. Net income attributable to owners of the parent amounted to JPY 24.4 billion, a decrease of JPY 39.0 billion or 61.5 % compared to the corresponding period in the previous fiscal year, reflecting the factors such as income taxes of JPY 23.8 billion.
