Japan September crude steel output down by 2.4 pct Reuters quoted Japan Iron and Steel Federation as saying that Japan’s crude steel output fell 2.4 percent in September from a year earlier to 8.42 million tonnes, reflecting a disruption in production at mills located in the areas hit by Typhoon Jebi and an earthquake. A researcher at the Japan Iron and Steel Federation said that “Some steelworks in the areas which were battered by severe weather and earthquake were forced to cut production. But domestic steel demand for automobiles and construction remained healthy.” The monthly decline comes after crude steel production rose in August and marks the biggest year-on-year slide since July 2017. September output, which is not seasonally-adjusted, decreased 4.4 percent from August. For the July to September quarter, crude steel output fell 1.1 percent from a year earlier to 25.64 million tonnes, booking the first quarterly loss in a year. In early September, Typhoon Jebi, the most powerful storm to hit Japan in 25 years, killed 11 people, injured hundreds and stranded thousands at flooded Kansai International Airport in western Japan. Just days later, a powerful earthquake paralyzed Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido, killing at least seven people, triggering landslides and knocking out power to its 5.3 million residents. Cathay Pacific verloor 4,9 procent.

Osaka Gas is also preparing to launch a service business in Indonesia that supports industrial customers in switching to natural gas at their plants with financing schemes. Source : Reuters
Japanese eyes opportunity for Powder River Basin coal Wyoming Business Report reported that Japanese power companies are looking for cleaner sources of coal and the Powder River Basin can fill that need. But Wyoming needs to continue researching and developing technology if it’s going to become the most attractive option. That was the message to local and UW officials in Gillette this past week by CoalinQ, a Japanese consulting firm hired by the University of Wyoming School of Energy Resources to study the Japanese coal market. It’s just another way the Cowboy State is working with the island nation. The Japan Coal Energy Center, or JCoal, signed an agreement with Wyoming in 2016, beginning a partnership to discuss coal trading, economic development and carbon technology, among other things. Kawasaki Heavy Industries also has committed to study carbon capture technologies at the Integrated Test Center. Coal, nuclear power and natural gas each make up close to a third of Japan’s energy portfolio. Australia is the largest supplier of coal to Japan, with 66 percent. The US supplies 0.9 percent of Japan’s coal, which is coming from Montana and Utah. Similar to how coal has a negative public perception in the United States, nuclear power is the black sheep of the Japanese energy market. Mr Etienne Boisnier, director of CoalinQ, said that “We don’t trust power companies when it comes to nuclear energy. Nobody wants to invest in nuclear in Japan, especially insurance companies and banks.” The Japanese government is projecting coal’s share of the energy picture to decrease by 2030, but those in the energy industry think the opposite. In 12 years, all of Japan’s nuclear power plants will have to be retired because they’ll have reached their age limits, Boisnier said. Meanwhile, there are more than 30 new coal plants in the pipeline, and coal imports are expected to grow to supply them. Source : Wyoming Business Report
Saudi PIF to invest USD 45 billion in SoftBank fund Reuters reported that the Public Investment Fund, Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, has invested in 50 or 60 companies via SoftBank Group's Vision Fund and will bring most of those firms to the kingdom. Mr Yasir al-Rumayyan , managing director of the company said that the state fund has agreed to invest $45 billion in the giant tech fund led by SoftBank and the pair are also working with other parties on a number of large-scale, multi-billion dollar projects relating to the solar industry. Mr Rumayyan was speaking at the Future Investment Initiative conference at which SoftBank's Chief Executive Masayoshi Son cancelled a speaking engagement, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing a spokesperson for the conference. Son, who was a visible presence at last year's conference, is the latest high-profile figure to pull out of this year's event amid mounting pressure on Riyadh over the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The US resident and Washington Post columnist critical of Riyadh's policies disappeared on Oct. 2 after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. PIF, which has more than USD 250 billion in assets and is the main backer of the conference, is a key vehicle of the kingdom's plan to diversify its economy away a reliance on oil revenue. Moody's affirms Toyota Tsusho's A3 ratings; outlook stable Moody's Japan K. K. has affirmed Toyota Tsusho Corporation's A3 issuer ratings and senior unsecured debt rating. The rating outlook is maintained at stable. Toyota Tsusho's A3 rating incorporates its (1) solid franchise, with stable earnings and cash flow from its automotive business; (2) sound financial profile and conservative financial policy; and (3) high dependence on the automotive sector compared with other Japanese trading companies (JTCs). Toyota Tsusho's rating is also supported by its strong relationships with Toyota Motor Corporation (Aa3 stable) and Toyota group companies. The rating also reflects the company's strong and stable relationships with its main banks and major customers. Given its high dependence on the automotive sector, Toyota Tsusho's earnings are highly correlated with the global production of automobiles, particularly that of Toyota Motor. In the longer term, Moody's expects technological advances will transform the auto industry, which could alter Toyota Tsusho's own business profile and profitability. However, at the same time, Moody's acknowledges the company's initiatives to address these secular shifts and to respond to technological innovations, including its establishment of its Next Mobility Development Department and Next Technology Fund. Moody's believes the expertise built upon Toyota Tsusho's involvement in the automobile value chain provides it with the competitive edge needed to respond to these shifts. This involvement will also continue to support the company's favorable franchise position among JTCs, generating stable earnings and cash flow. Moody's further notes that Toyota Tsusho maintains a conservative financial policy. It seeks to be free cash flow positive and to keep its net debt/equity at or below 1.0x (0.9x as of fiscal 2017). Leverage, as measured by FFO/debt and debt/capitalization, are well-positioned among its peers, standing at 15% and 53% respectively in fiscal 2017. Source : Strategic Research Institute

JISF worried about signs of slowing China economy Reuters reported that the head of the Japanese steel industry group said on Monday that he is worried about signs of a slowing Chinese economy. Japan Iron and Steel Federation Chairman Koji Kakigi told a news conference “The US China trade spat still has limited impact on Japanese steelmakers’ business, but we are concerned about signs of a weakening economy in China.” Mr Kakigi, who is also president of JFE Steel, a unit of JFE Holdings, said that there are signs of slowing automobile production in China although demand for Japanese automobiles there remained solid.
