Xeikon introduces Xeikon Aura partner program
    Wednesday 16 February 2011
    Section: Commercial printing | More

Xeikon today announces the launch of Xeikon Aura, the new partner program where all Xeikon partners are brought together under a central umbrella. As a result customers will benefit from a transparent overview on all tested and approved solutions offered through Xeikon's extensive set of industry partners.
"In today's business environment, customers require integrated solutions in order to fulfill their customer’s requirements. And as each customer needs a specific workflow, successful solutions are those where the right components have been selected, and are capable of being integrated within existing workflows," states Jeroen Van Bauwel, Product Manager Digital Front-End at Xeikon.

"To respond to these market necessities, a robust and fully-encompassing partner-network is vital. Since years, Xeikon has invested time and resources building the perfect relationships with a broad range of partners to provide our customers with easy access to any and every service they might want," he continues. "Bringing together this wealth of business beneficial relationships into Xeikon Aura, will provide our customers even more open accessibility to the services they require. And it will allow us to further strengthen the relationships with our partners."

Xeikon Aura is based on non-exclusive relationships with partners in prepress workflow, variable data authoring tools, MIS systems, finishing hardware and paper suppliers. The program covers all workflow solutions and resources. It offers customers a tool where all research on solution development is brought together in order to let them benefit from the work of Xeikon's integrations team. Existing and future partners also gain from this overall framework that enables them to offer a total, integrated solution to customers.

Key partners are drawn from all sectors of the industry including:

    - Workflow software – a fast and efficient digital workflow that can be automated is essential to increasing productivity and profitability. Via Xeikon’s network customers can select and develop tools to simplify, automate and optimize workflow.
    - Paper and print media – Xeikon simplifies the print media choice by identifying what will suit a customer’s requirement and providing accurate information based on profound testing on the various substrates available from selected partners.
    - Finishing and converting – web-fed and open-standard based, Xeikon digital presses offer smooth and seamless integration towards third-party finishing solutions, whether they are in-line, near-line or off-line.

"Being in the digital printing market for more than 15 years, we have built up strong and long-term relationships with partners throughout different segments in the industry. This experience allows us to not only offer full color variable print solutions but also supply our customers with a full set of integrated solutions. We support them every step of the way in their production process to give them a business competitive edge now and in the future to ensure they remain the number one choice with their clients," concludes Van Bauwel. "Xeikon Aura enables us to continuously expand our partner-network in order to respond even better to our customer's requirements."

    A fragmented industry consolidates
    Posted on 26 Apr 2011

The news that Smyth Companies has acquired Dow industries, and that Multi-Color Corporation (MCC) has increased its holdings in the European wine market demonstrates the profound impact of private equity in reshaping the label converting world.

With the backing of Canadian-based private equity firm Novacap, Smyth purchased Dow primarily because of its American East Coast coverage, thereby forming a powerhouse national converter and an entity powerful enough to play on the world stage.

Mutli-Color’s latest European acquisition is wine label specialist LA Cromografica, and this follows the announcement that the company is increasing its footprint in South Africa. MCC now has a truly global capability in wine label converting, matching the growth of global brands in this traditionally fragmented sector and allowing MCC to apply its existing expertise to new markets where PS still has a lot of growth potential.

As readers of Bob Cronin’s regular M&A column will be aware, these developments demonstrate the perception by the private equity world that the labels industry is likely to return significant growth over the next decade, and that there are major opportunities in a highly fragmented industry to build world-class label converting companies. Although carton and flexible packaging remain far bigger than labels in terms of volume and packaging market share, these industries have already been largely integrated through a handful of top players. The only globe-striding label converter to match these behemoths today is CCL.

So a major change is taking place in the structure of the label converting world, with rapid consolidation at the top matching – and driven by – consolidation and globalization of the global branded goods industry.

At the other end of the scale, smaller converters remain agile enough to service smaller local buyers and take local FMCG business where it makes sense. The danger comes for medium sized converters, already being squeezed by the big converting groups and by globalized industry suppliers and end users, but without the local client base which supports the small converter (‘mom & pop’ shops).

These converters need to change rapidly their business models from selling on price and volume to providing services which are not on the radar of the top groups, and beyond the capabilities of the smaller converter. This represents a key challenge and gives great scope for the kind of creative entrepreneurship which has driven our industry for the past 35 years.
