China’s Changan to invest $23.18 billion in smart EVs 144 Views Chinese carmaker Changan plans to invest CNY 150 billion ($23.18 billion) over the next five years to develop its smart electric vehicle capabilities, Kallanish reports. According to chairman Zhu Huarong, Changan is targeting annual sales of 1.05 million electric vehicles in 2025 and 2.7m EVs/year by 2030, as part of its expansion plans. He said on Tuesday the carmaker new energy vehicles (NEVs), which include battery electric, plug-in hybrid and fuel cell electric vehicles, should account for 35% of the company’s total sales in 2025, and 60% in 2030. The Chongqing-based car manufacturer is involved in EV cooperation with Huawei Technologies and CATL, and operates a JV with Ford. In a separate statement, Changan announced a restructured, new joint venture with Japan’s Mazda and China’s FAW. The Changan Mazda JV will be 47.5% owned by Changan and Mazda each, and the remaining 5% by FAW, following Chinese regulatory approval. Gabriela Farhangi UK
Hyundai Mobis ready to get aggressive in European market 120 Views South Korean auto parts maker Hyundai Mobis is set to start an “aggressive” marketing strategy to speed up its penetration in the European market, Kallanish reports. The company is promising to unveil 30 future technologies in the areas of electrification, autonomous driving and infotainment in a press conference on 6 September. This will be followed by its inaugural exhibition at the IAA Mobility event in Munich, Germany, on 7-12 September. “Hyundai Mobis will participate in the European motor show for the first time and engage in aggressive marketing,” the company says, adding that its ambition to convert all its operations home and abroad to use renewables fit in with regional policy. Hyundai Mobis plans to use 100% renewable power in its plants by 2040. “Recently, the biggest topic in the European automobile market is eco-friendly management to respond to climate change. Accordingly, global parts makers are also demanding a policy of using low-carbon energy. If there is no mid- to long-term eco-friendly mobility strategy, even the opportunity to win orders may decrease, such as being excluded from the bidding process,” it explains. Details on the upcoming technology reveal were kept to a minimum, but the company said it will introduce its MVisionX – an EV-based fully autonomous driving concept – to European customers. The South Korean manufacturer made “large-scale investment” in its factories in the Czech Republic and Slovakia to establish a “core EV component line.” Gabriela Farhangi UK
Board clears Hyundai Mobis’ $1.1 billion fuel cell capacity expansion 227 Views The board of directors at Hyundai Mobis have reportedly approved investment of KRW 1.32 trillion ($1.1 billion) to expand the company’s fuel cell production capacity in South Korea. Local reports say the earmarked spending will increase at its Icheon and Ulsan plants. The first produces fuel cell stacks and the second the fuel cell systems to be supplied to Hyundai Motor Co. These hydrogen fuel cell systems will power the Hyundai Nexo and the XCIENT trucks. Currently, the auto parts maker has capacity to produce fuel cells to manufacture 6,000 FCEVs per year. By 2030, after a KRW 7.6 trillion investment, this capacity should increase to 500,000 FCEVs/year, in line with Hyundai Motor Group’s production targets. The long-term ambition for the company is to develop an entire hydrogen value chain, from fuel cell production to hydrogen-powered logistics and mobility services, Kallanish notes. Hyundai plans to export 1,600 units of its XCIENT fuel cell electric trucks by 2025 through a joint venture with Swiss company H2 Energy. The JV leases the trucks on a pay-per-use basis, which includes the supply of fuel. The service helps companies to decarbonise operations without forking the initial investment of switching their diesel truck fleet to zero-emission vehicles. The carmaker is targeting annual sales of 110,000 FCEVs globally by 2025. Gabriela Farhangi UK
Panasonic, Equinor, Hydro to continue talks over European battery partnership 179 Views Panasonic, Equinor and Hydro are extending their talks towards reaching a partnership to build a battery factory in Europe, the companies said on Wednesday. “The strategic partnership will continue to develop the business case for a sustainable and cost-competitive European battery business,” according to a statement from Hydro. “Competitive framework conditions and market access will be decisive for continued progress.” So far, the companies have identified a “handful” of potential site locations in Norway, but will also be looking at alternative locations in the European Union. The project is still at an early stage with no investment decision taken yet, Kallanish notes. Panasonic announced its plans to explore battery opportunities in Norway last November, noting that its collaboration with Norwegian companies Equinor and Hydro could potentially pave the way for a “robust and sustainable” integrated battery supply chain. The parties said then they would engage directly with potential customers in Europe’s auto and non-auto industries. Preliminary findings on cooperation study were expected in mid-2021, determining whether the companies would progress to the next step. This decision is yet to be made, with the companies offering no detail on the need for extending talks. Gabriela Farhangi UK
VinFast, Gotion explore LFP gigafactory in Vietnam 143 Views Vietnam’s EV start-up VinFast is mulling the construction of a gigafactory in Vietnam to produce lithium iron phosphate (LFP) EV batteries, Kallanish learns from the company. The ambition is part of a partnership with China’s LFP battery manufacturer Gotion High-Tech Co. The parties signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly carry out R&D and production of LFP. Discussions are in early stages. “LFP battery is currently the most mainstream battery technology in the global new energy vehicle market, with unique advantages of high safety and long life,” VinFast says in a statement. The carmaker notes other benefits including “competitive” battery prices, which in turn reduce the production cost of EVs, particularly small and medium-sized vehicles. This battery chemistry doesn’t use expensive and rare materials such as cobalt and manganese, extending its benefits to the environment, FinFast suggests. Exploring the opportunities of local Vietnamese battery production is part of the carmaker’s efforts to establish a clean and localised part supply ecosystem. The Chinese battery manufacturer says it will use cutting-edge technology to fully support VinFast’s electrification strategy. “VinFast electric models equipped with Gotion batteries must also be popular among customers,” adds Gotion’s chairman Zhen Li. As part of its global expansion strategy, VinFast already announced plans to build battery and charging equipment manufacturing in the US and Europe. The company is involved in a number of collaborations with partners including those in Israel, Taiwan and the US, in areas such as solid-state battery, extreme fast charging, new materials, new battery design and others. VinFast launched its first EV model, the VFe34, in Vietnam earlier this year. Its global debut is planned for March 2022, with the launch of the VF235 and VFe36 models. It’s promising to offer “high class vehicles at reasonable costs.” Gabriela Farhangi UK

Russia eyes 25,000 EVs, hydrogen charging stations by 2030 204 Views Russia plans to begin a radical energy transition by 2030 in favour of electric transport, says the government. It approved the concept for the production of at least 25,000 electric vehicles (EVs) by 2024, Kallanish notes. The plan will be implemented in two stages: from 2021 to 2024 and from 2025 to 2030. According to the document, for the first stage, in addition to the production of tens of thousands of EVs in Russia, at least 9,400 charging stations will appear. As part of the second stage, at least 72,000 more charging stations and at least 1,000 hydrogen refueling stations will be put into operation, and the production of electric vehicles "will reach at least 10% of the total volume of vehicles produced." The development of production will also create at least 39,000 high-performance jobs. During the next events in the autumn of 2021, it was decided to draw up a list of pilot territories where they will begin to create a charging infrastructure. In 2022, it is planned to conduct an experiment - electric vehicles will be allowed free travel on toll sections of state roads. Earlier, the success in the development of electric transport was announced by the mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin. According to him, the Russian capital in terms of the volume of electric fleet of public transport has superiority over the cities of Europe. So, by mid-August 2021, the number of electric buses on Moscow streets reached 700. The serial production of the first Russian electric vehicle Zetta is scheduled to begin by the end of 2021. Production is set to take place at project partner Togliatti's automotive plant. It plans to produce more than 15,000 units/year, half of which will go to foreign markets. With a maximum speed of 120 km/hour, the EV has an entry-level starting price of RUB 550,000 ($7,403). Russia is yet to launch mass production of EVs. Kamaz and SPbPU are targeting first domestic electric vehicle production of Kama-1 later this or next year, with sales of 20,000 cars/year. Domestic carmaker Avtotor also said it will begin EV production in 2023. Avtovaz, which is producing Lada cars, is preparing for EV production in the next ten years. Russian domestic sales of electric vehicles continued to increase in January-May to 650 units, which is seven times more than in the same period of 2020 (92 units). In May alone, 148 EVs were sold, which is almost 10 times more than in May 2020 (15). Svetoslav Abrossimov Bulgaria
UK’s EV production hits new record despite collapse in total manufacturing 208 Views UK’s car manufacturing had its worst month in July since 1956, yet production of electric vehicles reached their highest share on record, Kallanish reports. Latest figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on Thursday who that total UK car production declined 37.6% to just 53,438 units. The performance reflected global shortage of semiconductors, staff absence due to Covid-19 isolation requirements and summer shutdown timings. Despite the negative month, EV production remained strong. SMMT says that 26% of all cars made in the country in July were either battery electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or hybrid electric (HEV). The share represents 13,893 units. The data doesn’t provide a breakdown of manufacturing volumes by fuel type, but the association said EV car manufacturing in the country has totalled 126,757 units in the first seven months of the year. Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, urged the government to help the UK auto industry to boost its competitiveness “with a reduction in energy levies and business rates for a sector that is strategically important in delivering net zero.” He adds that the worldwide chip shortage “shows little sign of abating,” expecting it to continue to negatively impact the sector. More than 8 out of 10 cars built in the UK in July were exported – figures include EVs. Gabriela Farhangi UK
French BEV sales slows in July 159 Views French battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales slowed in July to 7,576 units following 20,000 BEVs sold in June, according to data published by France’s Comité des Constructeurs Français d’Automobiles (CCFA). Over the period January-July 80,030 units were sold, gaining a market share of 7.7%. This represents a hike from the figure of 54,936 BEVs sold in France in the same period last year, for a market share of 6.1%, Kallanish notes. The plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) market represented a share of 7.9% in January-July 2021 with 82,542 units sold, another significant increase compared to the same period in 2020 when 27,182 PHEV were registered for a small market share of 3%. The hybrid petrol and diesel car market reported strong sales in the first seven month of 2021 with a 24.7% market share and 256,155 vehicles sold, an increase from the market share of 11.8% of the same period in 2020 when 105,967 hybrid cars were registered in the country, CCFA says. Nissan joins UN-backed Race to Zero campaign 147 Views Nissan Motor Co has joined the United Nations-supported Race to Zero campaign targeting full electrification and carbon neutrality to keep global warming to 1.5o C, Kallanish reports. The company said on Thursday it’s the first Japanese carmaker to join the programme, with its CO2 reduction targets been validated by the Science Based Targets (SBTi) initiative – a requirement for participation. “We are renewing our determination to work with like-minded companies and local governments around the world to solve the challenges of climate change and realise a sustainable society,” says Nissan ceo Makoto Uchida. He said the company will help accelerate global carbon neutrality through “further promotion of transport electrification.” The carmaker is targeting net-zero emissions across its operations and life cycle of its products by 2050, and the Nissan EV36Zero strategy will help the company to achieve that. The new manufacturing blueprint combines electric vehicle production, battery manufacturing and renewable energy generation, with Nissan investing £1 billion in its flagship EV hub in the UK. By early 2030s, 100% of Nissan’s all-new vehicle offerings should be electrified in the key markets of Japan, China, US, and Europe. Other commitments by the Japanese company includes energy storage, second life use for EV batteries and continued development of the so-called 4R business model – reuse, refabricate, resell and recycle. Who will be the battery powerhouse? China, Japan and the West compete From lithium to assembly, a global dash is on to secure supply chains The shimmering salt crystals on the shores of Qarhan Salt Lake in western China's Qinghai Province formed at the bottom of an ancient sea millions of years ago. Today, they are a strategic resource in a global competition over the next generation of energy. The site, its name derived from Mongolian for "world of salt," is rich in valuable metals including lithium, a critical component of modern batteries. Such sites have made Qinghai a center for lithium production, accounting for 10% of global output last year, and helped China secure a 70% share of the market for lithium-ion batteries. As the world shifts to renewable energy, batteries are becoming a cornerstone of security in the 21st century thanks to their ability to store and redistribute power -- essential to managing the wide swings in output from green sources. Countries that dominate battery production may soon wield the same type of power enjoyed by oil-producing nations in the 20th century. Europe, which imports about half its electric vehicle batteries from China, has grown increasingly worried about relying too heavily on the country for strategically important products since supply chains were severed in the early days of the coronavirus outbreak.asia.nikkei.com/Spotlight/Environment...
Will Japan be the battery powerhouse? Japan is the world's No. 1 when it comes to battery-related patents. According to the European Patent Office and the International Energy Agency, Japanese patent applications total 2,339 in this field, or roughly triple that of China.

Computers, phones, cars, ships, and even planes: batteries are essential for the technologies of tomorrow, and China looks set to dominate the industry from mining to manufacturing.supchina.com/2021/03/30/china-is-beco...
China's CATL unveils sodium-ion battery as EV popularity rises As demand for key ingredients spikes, new method is first for a major car battery maker China's CATL became the first major automotive battery maker to unveil a sodium-ion battery, saying it planned to set up a supply chain for the new technology in 2023. As electric vehicles become increasingly popular, demand for key battery ingredients, particularly cobalt, has spiked. That has spurred car and battery makers to seek alternatives to the current three main technologies -- nickel-cobalt-aluminium, nickel-cobalt-manganese and lithium iron phosphate batteries. How much cobalt is in a EV battery? Cobalt is considered the highest material supply chain risk for electric vehicles (EVs) in the short and medium term. EV batteries can have up to 20 kg of Cobalt in each 100 kilowatt-hour (kWh) pack. Right now, Cobalt can make up to 20% of the weight of the cathode in lithium ion EV batteries.asia.nikkei.com/Spotlight/Electric-ca...
