    VN: choleragevaar voor 200.000 Haïtianen

    GENÈVE (ANP) - Tot 200.000 Haïtianen kunnen cholera oplopen als de ziekte zich verder verspreidt over het land, waar al achthonderd mensen aan cholera zijn gestorven. De Verenigde Naties (VN) hebben dat vrijdag gezegd. De mensen kunnen symptomen krijgen variërend van lichte diarree tot dood door uitdroging.

    De schatting is gebaseerd op de epidemie in Zimbabwe. Daar liepen in 2008 en 2009 zo'n 100.000 inwoners de ziekte op, van wie er 4300 overleden.

    Volgens de VN heeft Haïti komend jaar ruim 100 miljoen euro aan hulp nodig in verband met de cholera-uitbraak, de eerste in Haïti sinds een eeuw. Tot dusver er zijn zeker 11.125 mensen in het ziekenhuis opgenomen wegens cholera.

    UTRECHT (ANP) – De gemeente Utrecht heeft bloemenkiosk Lucasbrug Flowers in de stad met onmiddellijke ingang gesloten. Behalve bosjes bloemen en boeketten verkocht de bloemenman ook softdrugs. Dat meldde de gemeente vrijdag.

    De wijkagent ontdekte de praktijken in de kiosk aan het Lucas Bolwerk. De politie constateerde bovendien dat de bloemenman de softdrugs aan minderjarigen verkocht. Bij een inval vond de politie geld en zakjes wiet.

    De gemeente heeft de bloemenkiosk direct voor een week op slot gedaan. Volgende week besluit Utrecht of het verkooppunt definitief dichtblijft.

    Testen op diabetes in de apotheek

    DEN HAAG (ANP) – Ruim 1400 apotheken zetten vanaf maandag de deuren een week lang open voor mensen die willen weten of ze diabetes hebben. De geïnteresseerden kunnen dan een bloedsuikertest doen, waarna de apotheker desgewenst de persoon kan doorverwijzen naar een huisarts.

    Tijdens de zogenoemde diabetesweek in de apotheek willen apothekers mensen wijzen op gezondheidsrisico’s en hen hierover voorlichten. Volgens de organiserende beroepsorganisatie KNMP lopen in ons land maar liefst een kwart miljoen mensen rond met diabetes zonder dat zelf te weten.

    De meesten van hen hebben diabetes type 2, een van de snelst groeiende ziekten ter wereld waarvan de symptomen, zoals vermoeidheid, dorst en veel plassen, soms niet tijdig worden opgemerkt.

    100 days heading up the IFEZ

    Lee Jong-cheol took the reins of the Incheon Free Economic Zone on July 26, stepping into the post with lofty goals. He reached his 100th day in office on Nov. 2 saying he has already made significant progress but that there is still a lot of work that needs to be done.

    During this period, Lee worked hard to increase incentives offered to businesses that operate in the IFEZ. He focused specifically on reducing taxes, eliminating certain visa requirements in the Yeongjong District, establishing a foreign hospital and attracting international educational institutions. He has looked to change the real estate investment system covering immigrants and recently visited officials from various government bodies. His main goal has been to clear the obstacles that stand in the way of the free economic zone’s development.

    Lee said he received a positive response from the Ministry of Justice on the real estate situation and that he will continue to aggressively lobby for increased incentives and lower taxes.

    He has also beefed up efforts to attract foreign investments, which is key to helping the IFEZ realize its full potential. The IFEZ has been able to ink six new contracts and three memorandums of understanding with Lee at the helm, highlighting the zone’s potential. The new deals total 582.1 billion won in investments, including 455 billion won from local companies and the rest from firms in the United States and others.

    “Recently, investments in businesses centered around biotechnology, the medical industry, IT and digital entertainment have been increasing,” Lee said. “There are four projects that we are expecting to win soon, including ones involving Johnson & Johnson and UTC from the United States. We expect to land about $20 million in additional investments from foreigners, which will help speed up the development of the IFEZ.”

    THE AGREEMENTS CEMENTED IN RECENT MONTHS INCLUDE A DEAL WITH CRUCELL OF THE NETHERLANDS FOR ADDITIONAL INVESTMENTS IN BERNA BIOTECH KOREA; a pact with a Japanese firm tied to the Songdo Digital Entertainment Center; and an agreement with CJ Cheiljedang for construction of a bio research center. Other deals involve Cisco, Utah University, Boeing and Kaco of Germany for a variety of high-profile projects and ventures in the IFEZ.

    Since the IFEZ opened in October 2003, organizers have been able to lure $1.05 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI). As of the end of September FDI has tripled this year alone, reaching $468 million compared with $155 million in 2009.

    The IFEZ is working hard to form a competitive industrial cluster by attracting foreign and local companies that can serve as anchors to the development - helping lure even more investments. Lee and other officials are actively promoting the zone’s regional competitiveness to investors and are actively engaged in responding to concerns expressed by companies already operating within the zone.

    “We expect investments to increase with the arrival of new heavyweight companies on the global stage,” Lee said.

    Aside from speeding up the development of the IFEZ and clearing some hurdles, Lee has set up a new panel to help address complaints from Songdo residents tied to construction of a gas facility.

    As part of this effort, IFEZ officials held 12 meetings and reviewed 17 items. They then set up a regular weekly meeting with businesses operating within the zone going forward. Through multiple meetings, the IFEZ was able to help pave the way for the resumption of construction of the Northeast Asia Trade Tower (NEATT), a landmark facility representing the IFEZ.

    This will further help attract foreign investments and has helped normalized operations and relations within the Songdo International Business Complex, which is a key part of the IFEZ.

    With his first 100 days behind him, Lee will now focus on the second phase of construction on the Songdo Convensia to reinforce the competitiveness of the IFEZ and help prepare for the 2014 Asian Games. Currently, the basic budget has been applied to the second phase of the Songdo Convensia. Construction is set to kick off in July 2011 and is scheduled to wrap up in May 2014.

    Officials plan to adjust the strategy for Songdo Landmark City in particular so that it fits in with the overall IFEZ development plan, with profits to be reinvested in other areas of the zone.

    Representatives of the IFEZ are also working to resolve issues surrounding the construction of the Yeongyu Muui Tourism Complex City as well as Milano Design City.

    At the same time, to promote Korea’s traditions and culture, the main park in Songdo International City will be transformed into a major tourism spot in Incheon. The site will include the tentatively named Incheon Traditional Hanok Village, which will host everything from traditional performances and shows to concerts and festivals featuring Korean cuisine.

    Officials hope to complete construction by June 2013.

    “After I came into office, I met many people and worked hard to set the development path for the IFEZ,” Lee said. “It was a very busy 100 days. I will continue to work hard to make IFEZ into an international multi-purpose business city with plenty of things to see and do.”

    Zou toch interessant zijn voor toekomstverwachtingen om hier eens wat van te horen (extra investeringen bij de splinternieuwe locatie) van't management, i.p.v. alleen maar korte-termijn contaminatie-probleempjes in de fabriek die bijna dicht gaat.

    Klinieken brouwen lekker drankje tegen virus

    NIJMEGEN (ANP) - De academische ziekenhuizen van Nijmegen, Leiden en Utrecht hebben van zorginstituut ZonMw subsidie gekregen om een lekkere, vloeibare variant van de nieuwe virusremmer valaciclovir te ontwikkelen. Deze virusremmer werkt heel goed bij jonge kinderen die bescherming nodig hebben tegen virusinfecties, maar de kleintjes blijken de tabletten niet te kunnen doorslikken.

    Voor kinderen met een verzwakt immuunsysteem zijn virusinfecties gevaarlijk. Ook kinderen die een stamceltransplantatie hebben ondergaan, moeten worden beschermd tegen verkoudheden en andere infecties. De kinderen krijgen daarvoor preventief medicijnen, omdat virale infecties voor hen levensbedreigend kunnen zijn.

    Werkende niercellen buiten lichaam gekweekt

    EINDHOVEN (ANP) - Onderzoekers van de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven en het Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen hebben in het laboratorium een laag niercellen gekweekt die het bloed blijven zuiveren. Dat is een grote doorbraak om tot betere nierdialyse te komen.

    Momenteel wordt met dialyse maar 15 tot 20 procent van het bloed gezuiverd. Wanneer deze niercellen worden gebruikt bij nierpatiënten, is nog niet bekend.

    Mensen met nierproblemen moeten momenteel naar het ziekenhuis voor een dialyse. Die werkt echter niet optimaal, maar zuivert slechts tot een vijfde van de capaciteit van gezonde nieren. Tot nu toe was het niet gelukt om niercellen te kweken die buiten het lichaam goed blijven werken. Onderzoekers werken nu aan een manier om cellen op te nemen in de dialyse waardoor de behandeling beter wordt en patiënten zich beter voelen.

    Duizenden doden door antibioticaresistentie

    BRUSSEL (ANP) - In de Europese Unie en in Noorwegen en IJsland sterven jaarlijks minstens 25.000 mensen aan infecties doordat ze door verkeerd voorschrijfgedrag resistent worden voor antibiotica. Dat maakte Eric Poudelet van het directoraat-generaal van Gezondheid en Consumenten van de Europese Commissie dinsdag in Brussel bekend.

    ,,Het gaat hier niet om een grote dreiging voor de volksgezondheid'', zo zei hij in het Europees Parlement. Hij sprak daar vanwege de lancering van de Europese Antibioticadag.

    Jaarlijks krijgen ruim 400.000 Europese patiënten te maken met resistente infecties. Het blijkt dat ongeveer de helft van alle antibiotica in ziekenhuizen foutief wordt voorgeschreven. Doel van de Europese Antibioticadag is niet noodzakelijk gebruik van antibiotica te bestrijden.

    Ziekenhuisbacterie rukt op in Europa

    LEIDEN (ANP) - De bacterie clostridium difficile komt geregeld voor in Europese ziekenhuizen. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum (LUMC) en het Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM), waarvan de resultaten dinsdag zijn gepubliceerd in het gezaghebbende medische tijdschrift The Lancet.

    Volgens arts-microbioloog Ed Kuijper en arts-infectioloog Martijn Bauer van het LUMC lijkt clostridium difficile zelfs bezig met een opmars in Europa. De bacterie, die ernstige diarree veroorzaakt en levensbedreigend kan zijn voor patiënten die toch al verzwakt zijn, wordt vaker aangetroffen dan voorheen. Maar dat komt mogelijk ook doordat ziekenhuizen er alerter op zijn en daardoor een besmetting eerder op het spoor komen. De aanpak verschilt sterk per land en daarmee ook het aantal aangetroffen gevallen.

    Nieuwe methode tegen hoge bloeddruk effectief

    ROTTERDAM (ANP) – Het wegbranden van zenuwen rondom de nieren is in veel gevallen een effectieve behandeling tegen hoge bloeddruk. Uit een internationale studie blijkt dat ongeveer 40 procent van de patiënten na zo’n behandeling geen hoge bloeddruk meer heeft. Dat meldde Erasmus MC woensdag.

    Het ziekenhuis in Rotterdam, dat meedeed aan de studie, paste de nieuwe methode al bij meerdere patiënten met succes toe.

    De zenuwen rond de nieren spelen een belangrijke rol bij het regelen van de bloeddruk. Bij veel mensen met hoge bloeddruk is dit mechanisme ontregeld. De behandeling houdt in dat een in de liesslagader ingebrachte katheter het zenuwweefsel door middel van radiogolven wegbrandt en uitschakelt. Daarmee worden zenuwsignalen geblokkeerd en wordt het ontregelde mechanisme gestopt.

    'Mogelijk 10.000 doden door cholera in Haïti'

    PORT-AU-PRINCE (ANP) - De cholera-epidemie in Haïti kan in een jaar tijd tienduizend doden veroorzaken. Dat zei een arts van de Pan Amerikaanse Gezondheidsorganisatie (PAHO) woensdag.

    Volgens de arts, Ciro Ugarte uit Peru, kunnen volgens de prognoses van de PAHO de komende zes tot twaalf maanden 200.000 mensen besmet raken. In het zwartste scenario sterft volgens hem 4 tot 5 procent van de patiënten.

    Woensdag maakte de Haïtiaanse minister van Gezondheid bekend dat de cholera-epidemie tot nu toe 1110 levens heeft geëist. De minister zei dat woensdag 1583 nieuwe patiënten werden opgenomen. In totaal werden meer dan 18.000 mensen voor de ziekte behandeld. Het eerste geval van cholera werd ruim drie weken geleden gemeld.

    Vogelgriep terug bij mensen Hongkong

    HONGKONG (ANP) – In Hongkong is voor het eerst sinds 2003 de vogelgriep vastgesteld bij een mens. Een 59-jarige vrouw die eind oktober op het vasteland van China is geweest, blijkt het zogeheten H5-virus onder de leden te hebben. Ze is er ernstig aan toe, aldus het ministerie van Volksgezondheid van de Chinese autonome regio.

    Het vogelgriepvirus ging voor zover bekend voor het eerst in 1997 in Hongkong over op mensen. In 2003 dook het opnieuw op in Zuidoost-Azië, toen in Vietnam drie mensen aan de menselijke variant van H5N1 bezweken. Sindsdien zijn er wereldwijd ongeveer driehonderd mensen overleden aan de ziekte, aldus de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie (WHO).

    De vogelgriep kan leiden tot snel opkomende koorts, spierpijn, rillerigheid, keelpijn, hoesten en uitputting. De grote angst is dat het virus zal muteren en dat mensen elkaar kunnen besmetten. Dat zou een pandemie met veel slachtoffers tot gevolg kunnen hebben.

    Glas bier na niertransplantatie is gezond

    GRONINGEN (ANP) - Matig alcoholgebruik vermindert het risico op diabetes en vroegtijdige sterfte na een niertransplantatie. Dat blijkt uit een studie verricht door Dorien Zelle van het Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen (UMCG).

    Uit eerder onderzoek is gebleken dat volwassenen die één of twee glazen alcohol per dag drinken, een kleinere kans hebben op diabetes en voortijdige sterfte dan mensen die helemaal niet drinken. Tot nu toe was onbekend of dit ook geldt voor mensen die een niertransplantatie hebben ondergaan.

    Onderzoekers van het UMCG hebben nu ontdekt dat het drinken van matige hoeveelheden alcohol ook een beschermende werking heeft tegen diabetes en vroegtijdige sterfte na niertransplantatie.

    Maar liefst 5% van de kinderen heeft last van ADHD. Zij worden behandeld met heftige medicijnen die een groeiende bron van zorg zijn. NRC en Ode berichten deze week echter over een veelbelovende therapie die medicijngebruik overbodig maakt: neurofeedback, een behandelmethode waarbij mensen leren om controle te krijgen over hun hersengolven. Dit was jarenlang geen erkende behandeling in de medische wereld maar er komt steeds meer wetenschappelijk bewijs voor het opmerkelijke positieve effect ervan. Zo bleek uit een studie van het Amerikaanse NIMH dat 75% van de kinderen die met neurofeedback was behandeld vooruit was gegaan, tegen 70% van de kinderen die medicijnen kregen. Overigens is neurofeedback geen wondermiddel, ouderlijke ondersteuning en de juiste klinische omgeving, eventueel gecombineerd met andere therapieën, zijn essentieel om het potentiële effect te verwezenlijken.

    U.S. in Vast Insider Trading Probe

    Federal authorities, capping a three-year investigation, are preparing insider-trading charges that could ensnare consultants, investment bankers, hedge-fund and mutual-fund traders and analysts across the nation, according to people familiar with the matter.
    The criminal and civil probes, which authorities say could eclipse the impact on the financial industry of any previous such investigation, are examining whether multiple insider-trading rings reaped illegal profits totaling tens of millions of dollars, the people say. Some charges could be brought before year-end, they say.
    The investigations, if they bear fruit, have the potential to expose a culture of pervasive insider trading in U.S. financial markets, including new ways non-public information is passed to traders through experts tied to specific industries or companies, federal authorities say.
    One focus of the criminal investigation is examining whether nonpublic information was passed along by independent analysts and consultants who work for companies that provide "expert network" services to hedge funds and mutual funds. These companies set up meetings and calls with current and former managers from hundreds of companies for traders seeking an investing edge.
    Among the expert networks whose consultants are being examined, the people say, is Primary Global Research LLC, a Mountain View, Calif., firm that connects experts with investors seeking information in the technology, health-care and other industries. "I have no comment on that," said Phani Kumar Saripella, Primary Global's chief operating officer. Primary's chief executive and chief operating officers previously worked at Intel Corp., according to its website.
    In another aspect of the probes, prosecutors and regulators are examining whether Goldman Sachs Group Inc. bankers leaked information about transactions, including health-care mergers, in ways that benefited certain investors, the people say. Goldman declined to comment.
    Independent analysts and research boutiques also are being examined. John Kinnucan, a principal at Broadband Research LLC in Portland, Ore., sent an email on Oct. 26 to roughly 20 hedge-fund and mutual-fund clients telling of a visit by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
    "Today two fresh faced eager beavers from the FBI showed up unannounced (obviously) on my doorstep thoroughly convinced that my clients have been trading on copious inside information," the email said. "(They obviously have been recording my cell phone conversations for quite some time, with what motivation I have no idea.) We obviously beg to differ, so have therefore declined the young gentleman's gracious offer to wear a wire and therefore ensnare you in their devious web."
    The email, which Mr. Kinnucan confirms writing, was addressed to traders at, among others: hedge-fund firms SAC Capital Advisors LP and Citadel Asset Management, and mutual-fund firms Janus Capital Group, Wellington Management Co. and MFS Investment Management. SAC, Wellington and MFS declined to comment; Janus and Citadel didn't immediately comment. It isn't known whether clients are under investigation for their business with Mr. Kinnucan.
    The investigations have been conducted by federal prosecutors in New York, the FBI and the Securities and Exchange Commission. Representatives of the Manhattan U.S. Attorney's office, the FBI and the SEC declined to comment.
    Another aspect of the probe is an examination of whether traders at a number of hedge funds and trading firms, including First New York Securities LLC, improperly gained nonpublic information about pending health-care, technology and other merger deals, according to the people familiar with the matter.
    Some traders at First New York, a 250-person trading firm, profited by anticipating health-care and other mergers unveiled in 2009, people familiar with the firm say.
    A First New York spokesman said: "We are one of more than three dozen firms that have been asked by regulators to provide general information in a widespread inquiry; we have cooperated fully." He added: "We stand behind our traders and our systems and policies in place that ensure full regulatory compliance."
    Key parts of the probes are at a late stage. A federal grand jury in New York has heard evidence, say people familiar with the matter. But as with all investigations that aren't completed, it's unclear what specific charges, if any, might be brought.
    The action is an outgrowth of a focus on insider trading by Preet Bharara, the Manhattan U.S. Attorney. In an October speech, Mr. Bharara said the area is a "top criminal priority" for his office, adding: "Illegal insider trading is rampant and may even be on the rise." Mr. Bharara declined to comment.
    Expert-network firms hire current or former company employees, as well as doctors and other specialists, to be consultants to funds making investment decisions. More than a third of institutional investment-management firms use expert networks, according to a late-2009 survey by Integrity Research Associates LLC in New York.
    The consultants typically earn several hundred dollars an hour for their services, which can include meetings or phone calls with traders to discuss developments in their company or industry. The expert-network companies say internal policies bar their consultants from disclosing confidential information.
    Generally, inside traders profit by buying stocks of acquisition targets before deals are announced and selling after the targets' shares rise in value.
    The SEC has been investigating potential leaks on takeover deals going back to at least 2007 amid an explosion of deals leading up to the financial crisis. The SEC sent subpoenas last fall to more than 30 hedge funds and other investors.
    Some subpoenas were related to trading in Schering-Plough Corp. stock before its takeover by Merck & Co. in 2009, say people familiar with the matter. Schering-Plough stock rose 8% the trading day before the deal plan was announced and 14% the day of the announcement. Merck said it "has a long-standing practice of fully cooperating with any regulatory inquiries and has explicit policies prohibiting the sharing of confidential information about the company and its potential partners."

    Transactions being focused on include MedImmune Inc.'s takeover by AstraZeneca Plc in 2007, the people say. MedImmune shares jumped 18% on Apr. 23, 2007, the day the deal was announced. A spokesman for AstraZeneca and its MedImmune unit declined to comment.
    Investigators are also examining the role of Goldman bankers in trading in shares of Advanced Medical Optics Inc., which was taken over by Abbott Laboratories in 2009, according to the people familiar with the matter. Advanced Medical Optics's shares jumped 143% on Jan. 12, 2009, the day the deal was announced. Goldman advised MedImmune and Advanced Medical Optics on the deals.
    A spokesman for AstraZeneca and its MedImmune unit declined to comment.
    In subpoenas, the SEC has sought information about communications—related to Schering-Plough and other deals—with Ziff Brothers, Jana Partners LLC, TPG-Axon Capital Management, Prudential Financial Inc.'s Jennison Associates asset-management unit, UBS AG's UBS Financial Services Inc. unit, and Deutsche Bank AG, according to subpoenas and the people familiar with the matter.
    Representatives of Ziff Brothers, Jana, TPG-Axon, Jennison, UBS and Deutsche Bank declined to comment.
    Among hedge-fund managers whose trading in takeovers is a focus of the criminal probe is Todd Deutsch, a top Wall Street trader who left Galleon Group in 2008 to go out on his own, the people close to the situation say. A spokesman for Mr. Deutsch, who has specialized in health-care and technology stocks, declined to comment.
    Prosecutors also are investigating whether some hedge-fund traders received inside information about Advanced Micro Devices Inc., which figured prominently in the government's insider-trading case last year against Galleon Group hedge fund founder Raj Rajaratnam and 22 other defendants.
    Fourteen defendants have pleaded guilty in the Galleon case; Mr. Rajaratnam has pleaded not guilty and is expected to go to trial in early 2011.
    Among those whose AMD transactions have been scrutinized is hedge-fund manager Richard Grodin. Mr. Grodin, who received a subpoena last fall, didn't return calls. An AMD spokesman declined to comment.

    Vaccine manufacturers big winners in fight for government cash

    Sanofi Pasteur MSD highest paid pharma company on balance sheet, earning £28m from government over three months

    A tantalising glimpse of some of the usually secret earnings of pharmaceutical companies is available from the spending breakdown of the Department of Health.
    The big winners are vaccine manufacturers, who supply the department directly for nationwide immunisation programmes. Most medicines for use in the NHS are bought by individual trusts and GP practices.
    The highest paid pharmaceutical company on the balance sheet was Sanofi Pasteur MSD, which earned £28m from the government over the three months from May to July.
    Sanofi Pasteur MSD – not to be confused with Sanofi Aventis, which earned just £5.7m – supplies the vaccine given to all babies against diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough) and tetanus. It also sells booster shots, which children get at the age of four and as teenagers, as well as polio and Hib vaccines.
    The next biggest pharmaceutical company payout was to Pfizer, one of the world's biggest drug manufacturers. It earned £20m in three months from sales of its vaccine for pneumococcal disease, a cause of meningitis, which is also on the childhood immunisation schedule. The price of Pfizer's vaccine will be much higher than the DPT vaccine, because it is new.
    The surprise omission from the spending breakdown is the UK's biggest drug company, GlaxoSmithKline. GSK, like Pfizer, sells vaccines as well as drugs. While most of its profits will be made from medicines sold directly to hospitals and GP practices, it has had two big money-earning vaccine deals with the government, to supply vaccines for flu during the pandemic and for cervical cancer.
    The flu vaccine deal was agreed when there were fears that swine flu could be devastating. The government signed a contract for 60m doses, enough to vaccinate the entire population. In the event, swine flu proved milder than had been feared by the chief medical officer, Sir Liam Donaldson, and other experts, but the government found it hard to back out of the deal. Eventually GSK agreed to supply only the stock that had already been manufactured, which was 34.8m doses.
    Neither GSK nor the government would talk about the price of the vaccine, but the government said in September last year that it would be spending £155.4m over four years on swine flu vaccine, which would include payments to Baxter Healthcare, which had a 30m-dose contract with the government that proved easier to cancel.
    The contract to supply the new cervical cancer vaccine for the national immunisation programme for teenage girls was hard-fought. Sanofi Pasteur MSD offered Gardasil, which it was marketing in Europe on behalf of the US company Merck. It has an advantage over GSK's Cervarix, because it protects not just against the main strains of the humanpapilloma virus which cause cervical cancer, but also against genital warts.
    Most of Europe and the USA chose Gardasil. The UK went with GSK's rival product, which many criticised as less useful. It was said that the decision, in the end, came down to price.
    What that price was, we have no clue, because GSK is notable by its absence from the DoH spreadsheet. A spokesperson for the department said that payments were made, but "the account sheet is not complete yet". The department declined to supply the missing GSK figures, on the grounds that the spending details were not supposed to be in the public domain.
    The flu pandemic proved a windfall for drug companies. The prospect of a major health emergency made the government decide last September to create a stockpile not just of flu vaccines but of essential medicines. These would be distributed across the nation in the event of a pandemic or other national disaster. An underlying fear was that an emergency, whether caused by spreading disease or by terrorists, could shut down drug manufacturing plants.
    The government went out to tender for more than two billion doses of about 450 essential medicines. These included antibiotics such as penicillin, and painkillers such as morphine, but also many millions of aspirin and paracetamol tablets, insulin, warfarin, which thins the blood, and glucose drips.
    The spreadsheet shows a total of £67.9m was spent in three months on "stock essential medicines". The contracts went to generics companies, who make copies of drugs that have been around for a long time and are thus out of patent. The prices are much lower than for newly invented medicines, but the sheer quantities needed make these lucrative contracts.
    The biggest winner was Iceland-based Actavis, which was paid £12.6m; followed by Wockhardt UK Ltd, an offshoot of an Indian company, which received £7.8m; and Sandoz, set up in Basel in the 1800s but now owned by the drug giant Novartis, which got £7.6m.

    LONDEN (ANP) - Ruim 12 miljoen inwoners van Burkina Faso zijn de eersten die een nieuw, goedkoop vaccin tegen hersenvliesontsteking ontvangen.

    De Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie WHO lanceert begin december een vaccinatiecampagne in Afrika om de ziekte de kop in te drukken. In 2015 moeten 450 miljoen personen in 25 Afrikaanse landen zijn gevaccineerd met MenAfriVac van het Indiase Serum Instituut, meldde WHO maandag.

    Vorig jaar zijn er in veertien Afrikaanse landen zeker vierduizend mensen aan de ziekte bezweken. De ontwikkelingskosten van het vaccin van slechts 37 eurocent per dosis, speciaal voor arme landen, zijn vergoed door de Bill en Melinda Gates Foundation.

    Hersenvliesontsteking is een infectieziekte die de hersenen en het ruggenmerg aantast. Volgens het hoofd vaccinaties van WHO durven mensen in sommige getroffen gebieden de straat niet meer op uit angst voor besmetting.

    Noord-Korea beschiet Zuid-Koreaans eiland

    Noord-Korea heeft een Zuid-Koreaans eiland beschoten aan de westgrens tussen de twee landen. Zuid-Koreaanse militairen hebben het vuur beantwoord. Aan Zuid-Koreaanse kant zouden gewonden zijn gevallen. Volgens persbureau Reuters zou het gaan om vier militairen.

    Ongeveer zestig huizen op het eiland Yeonpyeong staan in brand, melden ooggetuigen. De bewoners van het eiland worden geëvacueerd naar bunkers.

    Oefeningen
    In Zuid-Korea is de hoogste staat van paraatheid afgekondigd. In de bunkers onder het presidentieel paleis zou op dit moment overleg gaande zijn.

    Volgens correspondent Joan Veldkamp is de beschieting het zoveelste incident in een lange reeks. Economisch gaat het slecht met Noord-Korea en het bewind in Pyongyang zou de confrontatie willen opzoeken om de aandacht af te willen leiden van de problemen.

    Seoul heeft gezegd escalatie te willen voorkomen en in de Zuid-Koreaanse hoofdstad wordt vermoedt dat de beschietingen het antwoord zijn op militaire oefeningen van het leger van Zuid-Korea.
