    As Microsoft Corp. prepares to release Windows Vista to manufacturing next week and make it available to corporate users at the end of the month, the debate is ratcheting up over how much money -- if any -- companies could save by upgrading to the new operating system. For most businesses, the cost of licensing Windows is dwarfed by what it costs to manage the OS and the applications running on their PCs. The bulk of those expenses comes from paying the salaries of IT staffers, according to analysts. Microsoft claims that enhancements in Vista, such as tightened security, more powerful installation tools and improved central management capabilities, will allow companies to sharply cut the amount of time it takes to maintain PCs. That should lead to big savings, the software vendor predicts.

    Lee Nicholls, a senior technology adviser at Microsoft systems integrator Getronics NV, said calculating the potential total cost of ownership savings from an upgrade to Vista can be difficult. He added that operational costs likely will go up immediately after an upgrade because of the need for additional end-user support. Nonetheless, Nicholls said that based on Getronics' experiences in helping 10 large companies deploy Vista for beta-testing, users can save almost $320 per PC annually.

    But Robert Taylor, CIO of the Fulton County government in Georgia, said he thinks that for organizations like his with lots of full-time IT staffers, such savings estimates likely will turn out to be little more than "funny money."

    "We manage 6,000 desktops and 1,500 laptops," Taylor said. "At $300 per PC per year, that should add up to $2 million in savings. The only way we could actually save that would be to eliminate 30 people, which we're not going to do." On the other hand, Taylor, whose staff has been testing Vista on 100 PCs for more than 18 months as part of Microsoft's Technology Adoption Program, agreed that many of Vista's capabilities will boost automation and manageability, freeing up his staff's time for more valuable projects.

    For example, he pointed to Vista's beefed-up image management service, which will let systems administrators create personalized clone backups of PC configurations and then electronically reinstall Vista and all applications on end-user systems if necessary. Taylor said his staff will be able to avoid driving to 200-plus buildings in the 530-square-mile county, which includes Atlanta, to reinstall Windows and other software.

    He also applauded Vista's User Access Control feature, which strips users of administrator privileges. That should be a major deterrent to spyware problems, Taylor said. He plans to start rolling out Vista as soon as possible and expects the county to finish upgrading all of its PCs by the end of next year.

    Gartner Inc. analyst Michael Silver said there are big "ifs" in the cost-savings picture painted by Microsoft and Getronics. For example, he expects many end users to resist having their software installation privileges and other administrative rights taken away. "You'll have knowledge workers calling you every 10 minutes to install some piece of software," Silver warned. In addition, many companies already use third-party security and image management software with Windows XP, he said.

    With all those factors in mind, Silver thinks that only in the most aggressive scenarios, such as companies that upgrade unmanaged XP systems to well-managed Vista ones, will IT managers be able to realize annual savings of about $200 per PC. And that excludes some migration costs and the price of software licenses, said Silver.

    wat moeten we hier nu mee, wat is de essentie voor Getronics? Strategische partnerships zijn vaak niet meer dan goede bedoelingen, en prachtige produktannonceringen leveren nog geen brood op de plank.

    Waarom zou juist Getronics hiervan profiteren en niet de vele andere bedrijven die op dit terrein werkzaam zijn, wat zijn de unique selling points (USP's)? Wat doet GTN nu anders dan andere bedrijven of gaat GTN nu anders doen waardoor GTN hier extra van gaat profiteren?

    NBWO: Wat dacht je van meer inzicht krijgen hoe belangrijk partners (in dit geval 1 van de 3 Gold Partners) zijn voor de inkomstenbron van Getronics? Heb je uberhaubt wel een inzage in de dagelijkse aktiviteiten van Getronics? Het merendeel van de klanten van Getronics werken met de hier genoemde Microsoft produkten.

    Alleen het kopen van een doos met DVD en handleiding hebben de Getronics klanten niets aan. Simpel gezegd, het moet ook nog geinstalleerd, geconfigureerd, beheert en onderhouden worden. En daar juist komt Getronics voor om de hoek kijken.

    Een Gold Partner = Een Goudmijn

    Duidelijker kan de aanhef daarom niet zijn. Dankzij quickk werd nog eens geaccentueerd hoeveel potentie in inkomsten en werkopdrachten dit Windows Vista wereldwijd voor Getronics gaat betekenen. Maar het blijft niet alleen bij de nieuwe Windows Vista inkomsten (upgrade + nieuwe klanten).

    Op 6 nov j.l. werd n.l. ook bekend gemaakt dat de nieuwe releases van Office 2007 en Exchange 2007, net als Windows Vista, vanaf 30 Nov voor bedrijven uitgebracht zijn. Tel uit je winst. 1+1=2 wordt nu ook nog eens 1+1+1=3.

    Natuurlijk zullen ook andere bedrijven hier flink aan gaan verdienen. Maar niet 1, maar wel 3 nieuwe kaskrakers voor Microsoft Business Solutions, betekend bijna automatisch ook kaskrakers voor Getronics, en wel vanaf eind 2006 beschikbaar en de majore opbrengsten zijn dan te verwachten in 2007 en minimaal de 2 direkt opvolgende jaren erna.

Through the new enhancements, information workers can easily determine which products are best for their needs and find related productivity resources — whether it is assistance from one of the nearly 50,000 new help articles, a how-to refresher through one of the 35 new demos, online training through any of the 24 new courses, downloading one of the more than 400 new templates, or accessing other product downloads and tools.

    • Try. Starting Dec. 1 in the U.S. and Canada, and coming soon after to an additional 13 international markets,* Microsoft will make available free, downloadable product trials via Office Online. Expanding on the Online Test Drive already available today, the trials will allow people to try the new desktop programs before they decide to buy or upgrade to the 2007 release.

    • Buy. To support purchase and adoption, the 2007 release of Microsoft Office includes the largest investment in deployment and management tools in the product’s history. IT professionals can significantly reduce the cost and complexity of desktop deployments and upgrades by utilizing resources such as the Office Migration Planning Manager, Open XML Formats Conversion Toolkit, the Business Desktop Deployment 2007 Solution Accelerator, the Office Resource Kit, and more.

    Beyond overall code quality for RTM, other notable updates include the following:

    • SMS Link for Office Outlook® 2007. This new service allows Outlook 2007 users to connect with friends’, families’ and colleagues’ mobile phones by using SMS text messaging. It allows people to send and receive e-mail, contacts, appointments and tasks as text messages to mobile phones.

    • Localization. Most desktop application products in the 2007 Office system will be comprehensively localized in 38 languages.

    • Multilanguage support. For the first time, 2007 Office system customers will be able to purchase individual, single-language add-on packs that enable applications and suites to instantly become bilingual. The packs add a secondary localized user interface, help files, dictionary and thesaurus.

    Een kleine kanttekening van mijn kant. Ik verwacht weinig omzet van Vista in 2007, wel in 2008 en daarna.

    Bedrijven switchen niet zo snel als er een nieuw besturingssysteem is, die kijken eerst de kat uit de boom. Vergeet niet hoeveel bedrijven er nog werken met Windows 2000 of NT, zeker grote bedrijven. Het switchen kost veel tijd, geld en moeite dus daar wordt eerst rustig over nagedacht, systeembeheerders gaan een cursus volgen, etc.

    Dell boekt omzet USD 14,38 mrd in 3e kw volgens verwachting

    Dell heeft in het derde kwartaal van 2006/2007, dat eindigde op 2 november, een omzet gerealiseerd van USD 14,38. Analisten gepolst door Thomson Financial rekenden gemiddeld op een omzet van USD 14,44 miljard. Dit heeft de computerfabrikant dinsdag na het sluiten van Wall Street bekendgemaakt.

    In een toelichting zegt Dell dat de acties die het bedrijf heeft ondernomen ter verbetering van operationele en financiele resultaten voor de middellange termijn zijn effect hebben.

    In de regio Azie-Pacific en Japan kwam de omzet uit op USD 1,9 miljard bij een eenhedengroei van 23%. In China behoorde Dell tot de snelst groeiende leveranciers.

    Europa, het Midden-Oosten en Afrika boekte een omzet van USD 3,3 miljard, daar groeide de productverkoop met 9%. In Amerika bedroegen de verkopen USD 9,2 miljard bij een stijging van het aantal verkochte eenheden met 4%. In Brazilie bedroeg deze stijging 37%.

    De nettowinst bedroeg in het afgelopen kwartaal USD 677 miljoen, ofwel USD 0,30 per aandeel.

    Dell stelde publicatie van het kwartaalrapport op 16 november uit als gevolg van het onderzoek van de Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) naar de financiele rapportages.

    'Windows Vista is goed voor de economie'

    Woensdag 29 november 2006, 09:44 - Voor elke euro omzet die Microsoft binnenkrijgt met Windows Vista, kunnen Nederlandse partners 17 euro omzet behalen.

    Dat blijkt uit een rekensom van IDC. Het onderzoeksbureau heeft uitgerekend wat voor invloed de introductie van Windows Vista is. Deze software werd dinsdag samen met 2007 Office en Exchange Server officieel geïntroduceerd en zijn vanaf nu beschikbaar voor organisaties. Op 30 januari volgt de introductie van Vista voor consumenten.

    In Europa levert volgens IDC elke euro die voor Windows Vista aan omzet binnenkomt, 13 euro aan omzet voor andere bedrijven op. In Nederland is dit zelfs 17 euro. De partnerbedrijven kunnen die omzet behalen door diensten en nieuwe producten of productupgrades bij Windows Vista aan te bieden, aldus de marktonderzoekers.

    Uiteindelijk kan de Nederlandse economie zelfs 3,8 procent groeien dankzij de introductie van het nieuwe besturingssysteem van Microsoft, aldus IDC. "In 2007 kan het Nederland meer dan 5 miljard euro opleveren", vertelt Theo Rinsema, directeur Microsoft Nederland, trots.

    Ook Hans de Jong, directeur 'personal systems group' bij HP Nederland, gelooft in de positieve bijdrage van Vista aan de economie. "We kunnen ervan profiteren omdat de vraag naar pc's zal blijven stijgen."

    Volgens Microsoft zijn Vista en Office de meest geteste Microsoft-producten ooit. Van beide programma's zijn wereldwijd meer dan vijf miljoen testversies gedownload. In Nederland werden ongeveer 200.000 bèta-versies van Office opgevraagd en 130.000 exemplaren van Windows Vista bèta.

    Dat de introductie van de nieuwe Windows- en Office-versie belangrijk is voor Microsoft, benadrukte de softwarefabrikant nog eens. Maar liefst 56 procent van de omzet van Microsoft Nederland is afkomstig van de verkoop van Windows-, Office- en Exchange-pakketten.

    In het IDC-rapport wordt ook een schatting gegeven van de snelheid waarmee mensen zullen overstappen op Vista. "In het eerste jaar zullen meer dan 20 procent van alle Nederlandse it-werknemers overgaan op Vista. Dit komt neer op ongeveer 90.000 mensen."
