Dat stelt Dutch New Energy Research.
RWE’s subsidiary BELECTRIC was responsible for the entire construction of the two solar farms. Source : STRATEGIC RESEARCH INSTITUTE
Vattenfall Solar Team Breaks Solar Racing World Endurance Record On 8 August, the Vattenfall Solar Team set a new solar racing world endurance record in The Netherlands. Over 12 hours, the Nuna Phoenix solar car drove more than 924 kilometres fuelled entirely by solar power. Participation in an international solar race is not possible this year due to the coronavirus. The Vattenfall Solar Team therefore took their self-built Nuna Phoenix solar car to the Department of Road Transport test track in Lelystad in the Netherlands in an attempt to set a new world endurance record. A special aspect of the record attempt was that it was the first time the Nuna would be seen in action this year. To break the world endurance record held by the Nuna 8s since 2017, the Nuna Phoenix would have to travel at least 882 kilometres in 12 hours, more than 300 rounds. In the end, the solar car ran 328 rounds. The team is used to the heat of Australia, but the unusually high temperatures in the Netherlands really put the team on its mettle. Four drivers took turns during the day, each for a stint of three hours. While the drivers switched places, the other team members sprayed water on the solar panels to try to cool them down. The starting shot sounded at 7 AM the first driver, Marloes Nanninga, got off to a flying start. The other drivers also took their turns as planned. At 7 PM the Nuna Phoenix whooshed over the finish line of the RWD site in Lelystad. Source : STRATEGIC RESEARCH INSTITUTE
RWE & Bosch Sign Long-Term Solar Power Purchase Agreement RWE Supply & Trading will provide Bosch with solar power. The total capacity amounts to 50 megawatts. The company will source the power from several new farms in southern Germany developed by RWE and other providers. These solar farms can be built thanks to the power purchase agreements and thus do not rely on subsidies under the German Renewable Energy Act. The first delivery will begin shortly, with all of the solar farms slated for commissioning over the course of 2021. RWE Supply & Trading will organise and pool procurement, take charge of structuring, and, in its role as accounting group overseer, integrate all of the green electricity deliveries within the Bosch procurement portfolio. In so doing, RWE will ensure that the power put on the system equals the amount of electricity drawn from the grid simultaneously at all times. Bosch seeks to be fully carbon neutral by the end of 2020. Its German sites already achieved this goal at the end of 2019. The company intends to significantly increase its renewable energy consumption by 2030. The long-term PV supply agreement with RWE pays into hitting this target and Bosch's strategy. PUB & Sembcorp Start Construction of 60 MW Floating Solar Photovoltaic System on Tengeh Reservoir National Water Agency PUB and Sembcorp Floating Solar Singapore announced the commencement of construction of the 60 megawatt-peak floating solar photovoltaic system on Tengeh Reservoir. This marks a significant milestone in building one of the world’s largest inland floating solar PV systems, which not only helps to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and thus carbon emissions, but also builds national climate resilience for a more sustainable future. This large-scale floating solar PV system at Tengeh Reservoir will enable Singapore to be one of the few countries in the world to integrate green technology with water treatment. When the project begins full commercial operations next year, the amount of clean energy generated will be sufficient to power PUB’s local water treatment plants, offsetting 7% of PUB’s annual energy needs. The project will also incorporate new innovations in floating solar PV design and construction. Every component of the system was carefully designed and selected based on Singapore’s climate conditions in order to maximise energy generation, minimise environmental and water quality impact, and be durable enough to fulfil a service lifespan of 25 years. These include double-glass PV modules instead of the single-glass variant commonly used for rooftops installations, to enhance durability in a wet and humid environment. The PV modules are supported by certified food-grade quality high density polyethylene (HDPE) floats which are UV-resistant to prevent degradation from the intense sunlight exposure. To optimise performance and reliability of operations, the system is backed by a digital monitoring platform which features safety cameras, ‘live’ video monitoring, dashboards and alerts that help to track environmental factors such as wind speed, solar irradiation and ambient temperature. The system also detects abnormalities that may indicate potential overheating and fire hazard for preemptive troubleshooting. Staff will be able to monitor the system remotely via a mobile application which allows maintenance teams to be swiftly deployed when required (please refer to infographic in Annex A). The commencement of construction is not expected to have a material impact on the earnings per share and net asset value per share of Sembcorp, for the financial year ending December 31, 2020. Researchers Store Energy in Red Bricks using Nanofibers Image Source: Solar Bricks According to new research from Washington University in St Louis Red bricks can be converted into energy storage units that can be charged to hold electricity, like a battery. Brick has been used in walls and buildings for thousands of years, but rarely has been found fit for any other use. Now, chemists in Arts & Sciences have developed a method to make or modify “smart bricks” that can store energy until required for powering devices. While some architects and designers have recognized the humble brick’s ability to absorb and store the sun’s heat, this is the first time anyone has tried using bricks as anything more than thermal mass for heating and cooling. The red pigment in bricks, iron oxide, or rust, is essential for triggering the polymerisation reaction. The authors’ calculations suggest that walls made of these energy-storing bricks could store a substantial amount of energy. A common material makes an ideal and inexpensive starting point for chemical synthesis. A study published August 7 in Advanced Functional Materials highlights new methods developed by D’Arcy and collaborators at Washington University’s Institute of Materials Science & Engineering. Assistant professor of chemistry Julio D’Arcy and colleagues, including Washington University graduate student Hongmin Wang, first author of the new study, showed how to convert red bricks into a type of energy storage device called a supercapacitor. D’Arcy said “Our method works with regular brick or recycled bricks, and we can make our own bricks as well. As a matter of fact, the work that we have published in Nature Communications stems from bricks that we bought at Home Depot right here in Brentwood in Missouri.. In this work, we have developed a coating of the conducting polymer PEDOT, which is comprised of nanofibers that penetrate the inner porous network of a brick; a polymer coating remains trapped in a brick and serves as an ion sponge that stores and conducts electricity.” D’Arcy said. “We envision that this could be a reality when you connect our bricks with solar cells, this could take 50 bricks in close proximity to the load. These 50 bricks would enable powering emergency lighting for five hours. Advantageously, a brick wall serving as a supercapacitor can be recharged hundreds of thousands of times within an hour. If you connect a couple of bricks, microelectronics sensors would be easily powered.” Source : STRATEGIC RESEARCH INSTITUTE

Ultra Lightweigh Solar Panels Printed with Inkjet Ultra lightweight solar cells have attracted enormous attention due to their ultra conformability, flexibility, and compatibility with applications including electronic skin or miniaturized electronics for biological applications. With the latest advancements in printing technologies, printing ultrathin electronics is becoming now a reality. All inkjet printed ultrathin solar cells on a 1.7 µm thick biocompatible parylene substrate are fabricated with PCE reaching up to 3.6% and high power per weight values of 6.3 W g. After encapsulation, the cells retain their performance after being exposed for 6 h to aqueous environments such as water, seawater, or phosphate buffered saline, paving the way for their integration in more complex circuits for biological systems. The cathode electrode is composed of a highly conductive PEDOTA, a Zinc Oxide layer deposited on top is used for electron transport layer while a bulk heterojunction composed of IDTBR is used as the photoactive layer. For charge extraction, a different formulated ink of (PEDOTB is deposited on top of the active layer to ensure surface energy compatibility. Owing to the high conductivity of the ink, PEDOTB is used as both the transport layer and the anode without the support of a metallic electrode for the current collection. Printed silver side contact pads were added to prevent damage to the polymer layer and ensure good contact with external electronics used for support and measurements. The total weight of one solar cell of 0.1 square cm is 0.057 mg. The ultralightweight solar cell can adhere to the surface of a bubble demonstrating its potential implementation in airborne applications. Source : STRATEGIC RESEARCH INSTITUTE,
Enel Green Power España Using Exoskeletons for Solar Panel Mounting PV Magazine reported that Enel Green Power España, a unit of Endesa, is applying a new technology for the construction of a 50 MW solar park near Seville and two large-scale PV plants near Badajoz, in southern Spain. The Badajoz plants will have capacities of 49.9 MW and 41.9 MW. Endesa is applying technologies such as exoskeletons to facilitate the assembly of solar panels, integrated junctions, state-of-the-art surveillance systems, and detection cameras. The integrated junctions are systems for joining PV modules that allow for faster anchoring of the solar modules, thus facilitating their construction, the company said. There are about 500 workers involved in the installation of the three plants – 300 people in Seville and 200 in Badajoz. Together, they will install almost 390,000 solar modules by using an exoskeleton that will make the panels light enough to be mounted by just one person, rather than two people.
