    Daimler to start serial production of eActros truck in 2021

    Reuters quoted Daimler as saying that it aims to start serial production of an electric heavy truck with a range of 200 km (124 miles) in 2021, Daimler Trucks chief Martin Daum said. A year ago, Daimler had said its eActros could be ready for serial production in 2020.

    Ten customers, including supermarket chain Edeka and logistics group Hermes, are to test Daimler's eActros truck this year, Daum said. After that, another set of customers will test it for another year.

    Daimler and rivals including Tesla and Volkswagen's MAN are racing to bring electric trucks to market to cope with a push to shift from fossil fuels to greener vehicles and reduce pollution.

    Daimler to invest EUR 2.6 billion in trucks division by 2019

    Reuters quoted Daimler as saying that it will invest EUR 2.6 billion in research and development at its trucks division by 2019, as part of a broader effort to mass produce electric heavy-duty commercial vehicles from 2021. Mercedes-Benz is currently testing eActros trucks with an operating range of up to 200 kms (125 miles) as part of a broader electrification push.

    Daimler said that "In 2018 and 2019, Daimler Trucks will invest approximately EUR 1.3 billion on average each year in research and development."

    The company said that Daimler Trucks will focus on developing electric mobility, connectivity and automated driving technology for commercial vehicles.

    It said that Mercedes-Benz is testing trucks with 11 battery packs and two drive motors until 2020 to see if fully electric vehicles can replace diesel-powered equivalents.

    However, Mercedes-Benz is testing two variants with a gross vehicle weight of 18 to 25 tonnes and will hand them over to a focus group of customers this year.

    STUTTGART (AFN/BLOOMBERG) - Het Chinese autobedrijf Zhejiang Geely is de grootste aandeelhouder geworden van het Duitse Daimler, het moederconcern van Mercedes-Benz. Geely, moeder van automerk Volvo, bezit bijna 10 procent van Daimler, zo werd vrijdag bekend.

    Het belang in Daimler werd in de afgelopen tijd opgebouwd en is bijna 7,5 miljard euro waard. Er werd in de media al gemeld dat de Chinezen bezig waren om een groot belang te nemen in Daimler. Het bedrijf uit Stuttgart heeft laten weten elke langetermijninvesteerder te verwelkomen. Eerder was het staatsinvesteringsfonds van Koeweit met 6,8 procent de grootste aandeelhouder van Daimler.

    In december werd nog bekend dat Geely de grootste aandeelhouder is geworden van de Zweedse vrachtwagenbouwer Volvo. Ook is het Chinese bedrijf eigenaar van de Britse sportwagenfabrikant Lotus.

    Reuters reported that Baic Motor Corporation and Daimler AG are planning to co-invest more than CNY 11.9 billion to build a new local production base for their joint venture, Beijing Benz Automative, Baic said.

    In a statement to the Hong Kong stock exchange, Baic said the new factory would manufacture various Mercedes-Benz products in China including "new energy electric vehicles" equipped with "high quality premium automobile manufacturing system to further improve the overall production capacity of Beijing Benz."

    No violations seen in Geely buy of Daimler stake - Ms Merkel

    AP cited German Chancellor Ms Angela Merkel as saying that regulators are reviewing the acquisition of nearly 10 percent of Daimler's shares by Chinese businessman Li Shufu, chairman of Zhejiang Geely, but that there don't seem to have been any violations. She told reporters in Berlin on Tuesday that "we are open with our trade partners and at first glance don't see any kind of violations."

    Ms Merkel said that the government wasn't involved in the transaction, and said that Daimler has other foreign investors.

    She said that her goal is ensuring that the German auto industry continues to be strong and provide jobs. She says "overall it's about keeping a viable automotive industry in Germany."

    Ondertussen is er bijna 8 procent van de koers af.....

    Om maar aan te geven hoe verdomd lastig het is, ook voor heel grote beleggers en investeerders om hun aankoopmoment te bepalen.

    Zoals ik vanmiddag bij Bolo postte: Heel benieuwd wat morgen de Duitse autoaandelen gaan doen..

    Qatar nam ooit een zware deelneming in Daimler en verkocht die stukken jaren later met flinke winst. Alleen ging NA hun verkoop de koers nog eens zo'n 45 procent omhoog, hoger dan hun verkoopprijs.

    Ik vraag mij vaak af: Wat voor adviseurs gebruiken ze bij dit soort miljarden transacties.

    Hans,

    Ik heb het al vaker gepost in de KK. STEENGOED en wel degelijk zinvol om die draden zo bij te houden.
    Als je zoals ik regelmatig weer " iets" overweegt, kun je bij wijze van spreken heel wat websites afdweilen voro nieuws, maar bij jouw draden vind je alles mooi chronologisch bij elkaar. En dat helpt wel degelijk om een beslissing te nemen of om zoals ik hierboven postte zo'n miljardenaankoop van Geely in zoverre te relativeren dat ook zij niet het ideale aankoopmoment weten of zoals bij de Qatari bij lange na niet het ideale verkoopmoment.

    Door dit soort draden en vroeger mijn eigen enorme archief kon je zulke zaken bijhouden. Anders wordt het onmogelijk.

    Heeft het zin? Ik vind van wel, want een mens kan niet alles onthouden en je leest vlot een massa gegevens terug.

    Ook die aandelenfabriek van Coldplay is wel fijn om te raadplegen.

    Maar uiteindelijk, Hans, wanneer aankopen, wanneer verkopen..... De allergrootsten zitten er regelmatig faliekant naast. En ook dat leer je uit dit soort draden die jou zo goed bijhoudt.

    Gelukkig worden die niet gecensureerd, al ken ik er genoeg in de KK die JOU dan weer het zwijgen willen opleggen....

    Het is ook altijd wat!

    Daimler sees nickel rich batteries gaining traction

    Reuters reported that car industry is moving towards making electric car batteries with a higher ratio of nickel, Mr Ola Kaellenius, Daimler board member responsible for research and development, said that high cobalt prices have been pushing manufacturers to adjust the recipe for the batteries used to power electric cars to reduce the amount of cobalt and increase the nickel content.

    Each electric car battery uses between 8-12 kilograms of cobalt. More than half of annual mined supply of cobalt is sourced from Democratic Republic of Congo.

    Mr Kaellenius said that carmakers had also tried to increase the operating range of electric cars by experimenting with the ratio and mix of nickel cobalt and manganese in batteries.

    Mr Kaellenius said that “The main trend is toward NMC,” referring to nickel manganese and cobalt. Mr Kaellenius said of the ratio of materials that “We saw a mix of 1:1:1 then we went to 6:2:2 and now some suppliers are even talking about 9:05:05.”

    The auto industry currently has a range of different battery recipes competing for use in battery cathodes.

    One is NCA, or lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide, produced by Panasonic and used by Tesla which competes with NMC, lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide.

    Chinese manufacturers use a composition called LFP which has a lower energy density but also does without cobalt, while Japanese carmakers use LMO, or lithium manganese oxide, which is used by Nissan and LG Chem.

    Daimler acquire 3.93pct stake in China's BAIC electric car subsidiary

    Reuters quoted Daimler as saying that it would deepen its cooperation with China's BAIC Group in the area of new energy vehicles, even as rival Geely seeks to gain access to the German carmakers' electric vehicle technologies. Daimler said it has bought a 3.93 percent stake in Beijing Electric Vehicle Co., a subsidiary of BAIC Group.

    Mr Hubertus Troska, Daimler's board member responsible for China said that "The investment in BJEV marks yet another milestone in the strong cooperation between Daimler and BAIC for New Energy Vehicles in China, and it underlines our commitment to the further development of electric mobility."

    Mr Xu Heyi, Chairman of BAIC Group, in a statement said that "BAIC Group and Daimler have long maintained a deep, strategic partnership. New Energy Vehicles are one of BAIC Group's core business areas, and Daimler's investment in BJEV further expands our partnership, taking the cooperation between BAIC and Daimler into an entirely new stage of development."

    Germany Daimler cars unit invests to ramp up output to 3 million vehicles

    Reuters reported that Germany' Daimler is in a push to boost production capacity as its Mercedes-Benz Cars unit eyes annual sales of 3 million vehicles, up from 2.4 million last year, an executive told weekly publication Automobilwoche. "The sites in our global production network are running at high utilisation rates," Mr Markus Schaefer, board member in charge of manufacturing and procurement at Mercedes-Benz Cars, was quoted as saying.

    Mr Schaefer said that "That's why we are expanding our capacities according to market demand and are moving towards 3 million units."

    Another element in the plan is an increase in the number of Mercedes-Benz models to 40.

    By the end of the decade three new production sites will come on stream: compact models will be assembled in Aguascalientes, Mexico from the third quarter of this year; a new site in Kecskemet, Hungary, will be built by end-2019; and the company is planning to add a second site in Beijing, Automobilwoche said.

    Mercedes-Benz plant under construction to release its first car in Russia

    Daimler AG, the company producing cars under the brand of Mercedes-Benz, is likely to release its first automobile produced at an under construction plant in the Moscow region in the first quarter of 2019.

    This statement was made by the First Deputy Minister of Investment and Innovation of the Moscow region Mr Vadim Khromov.

    He said that “At the moment, this project is in the active stage of implementation. The plant is under construction in the Solnechnogorsk district, general construction works on the buildings have already been completed while the interior finishing is underway. In the summer, the equipment will be installed at the plant. We expect that by the end of the first quarter of next year, products will come off the assembly line.”

    Mr Vadim Khromov added that more than 1,000 jobs would be created at the enterprise.

    Daimler boekt recordreeks, maar komt toch onder vuur van aandeelhouders

    Aan goed nieuws geen gebrek bij Daimler: de winst steeg vorig met een kwart en het aantal verkochte voertuigen kwam op recordhoogte. Toch zien veel beleggers en analisten voetangels en klemmen op de weg, en dat vertaalt zich in een kwakkelende beurskoers. De zorgen worden donderdag door de top van Daimler geadresseerd op de aandeelhoudersvergadering in Berlijn. ‘Alles komt op tafel’, zei Marc Tüngler van de Duitse beleggersvereniging DSW.

    Een slordige 5000 beleggers worden donderdag verwacht. Ze worden verwend met een flinke verhoging van het dividend, mogelijk gemaakt door de uitstekende resultaten. Daimler verkocht met 3,3 miljoen voertuigen nog nooit zo goed als in 2017. De automaker meldde in februari een recordjaaromzet van €164,3 mrd. De winst onderaan de streep steeg met 24% tot €10,5 mrd. Met dank aan Trump is de belastingdruk sterk verminderd.

    Bestuursvoorzitter Dieter Zetsche en voorzitter van de raad van commissarissen Manfred Bischoff maken zich niettemin op voor een vragenvuur. De zorgen variëren van het dieselschandaal tot de nieuwe Chinese aandeelhouder tot de herstructurering van vennootschapsstructuur.

    Diesel onder druk
    Daimler en de andere Duitse autofabrikanten staan met hun dieseltechnologie zwaar onder druk. Onlangs oordeelde de hoogste rechter dat steden rijverboden mogen opleggen. De beperkingen vloeien voort uit de onthullingen dat veel Duitse auto’s vervuilender waren dan voorgespiegeld.

    De autoreus uit Stuttgart heeft updates doorgevoerd in de software van drie miljoen voertuigen. Mogelijk worden Duitse autofabrikanten alsnog gedwongen tot dure aanpassingen van hardware. Daimler heeft net als BMW bewuste manipulatie altijd ontkend, in tegenstelling tot Volkswagen. Maar ondertussen lopen er strafonderzoeken en claimzaken in binnen- en buitenland.

    Kartelvorming
    Daimler is daarnaast beschuldigd van kartelvorming. Jarenlang zouden afspraken zijn gemaakt met andere fabrikanten over technologie, kosten en leveranciers. De Europese Commissie deed vorig jaar invallen bij Volkswagen, Audi, BMW en Daimler. Het jaar daarvoor was Daimler een van de beboete bedrijven in een vrachtwagenkartel. Claims tegen onderneming en bestuursleden zijn daarbij nog niet afgewend.

    Samenwerking met BMW
    Ook de onlangs aangekondigde samenwerking tussen BMW en Daimler met hun verlieslatende autodeeldiensten roept vragen op. De aartsrivalen voegen hun dochters Drive-Now en Car2Go samen. Beide bedrijven voegen ook hun taxi- en parkeerplaatsservicediensten aan de combinatie toe.

    Dat is vooral een defensieve stap, tegen oprukkende startups als het Amerikaanse Uber. ‘We laten het vormgeven van toekomstige stedelijke mobiliteit niet aan anderen over’, zei Zetsche. Financiële details weigerden de Zuid-Duitse bedrijven tot nu toe te delen.

    Daimler zal ook vragen krijgen over de mogelijke opsplitsing van het concern. Overwogen wordt de huidige vijf divisies om te zetten in drie dochterondernemingen: personenauto’s, bedrijfsvoertuigen en financiële dienstverlening. Die kunnen elk een eigen bestuur en beursnotering krijgen om de aandeelhouderswaarde op te krikken. Het besluit valt pas in 2019, het jaar dat Zetsche naar verwachting afscheid zal nemen als ceo.

    Li Shufu
    Het grootste nieuws rond Daimler van de laatste tijd is de entree van auto-ondernemer Li Shufu als nieuwe grootaandeelhouder met een belang van tegen de 10%. Onduidelijk is wat de beweegredenen zijn van de Chinese miljardair en hoe Daimler de toenadering beantwoordt.

    Azië is de grootste afzetmarkt voor Daimler. In China hebben de Duitsers partnerschappen die mogelijk schuren met de belangen van Li Shufu. De ondernemer verschijnt donderdag niet in persoon in Berlijn. Hij sprak onlangs al in klein gezelschap met het topmanagement van Daimler.

    Mercedes populair in China
    Chinese markt groeidrijver in eerste kwartaal.

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) Mercedes-Benz heeft meer auto's verkocht in het eerste kwartaal, geholpen door een sterke vraag uit China. Dit maakte de Duitse autofabrikant vrijdag bekend.

    In maart werden er voor het eerst in de geschiedenis van het automerk meer dan 237.000 auto's verkocht; een stijging van krap 4 procent op jaarbasis. In het eerste kwartaal verlieten 594.304 auto's de showroom. Dit was 6 procent meer dan een jaar terug. Daarmee was het ook het beste kwartaal ooit voor Mercedes-Benz.

    De Chinese markt was de grootste aanjager voor de groei. Hier steeg het aantal verkochte auto's in het eerste kwartaal met dik 17 procent.

    Mercedes Benz India posts record sales, to launch 10 models in 2018

    Autocar India reported that after ending 2017 with record sales, the country's leading luxury carmaker Mercedes Benz India added yet another feather in its cap as it registered its highest-ever sales for the fiscal as well as the first quarter. The carmaker also said it would launch 10 vehicles in India during the year.

    In the year ending March 2018, Mercedes-Benz India sold 16,236 units, up 22.5 percent YoY, and in the first quarter of the calendar year 2018 (January-March), it sold 4,556 units, up 25 percent. Sales were led by the long-wheelbase E-class as well as the brand's SUV portfolio. The GLC was the top-selling SUV for the brand in the first quarter.

    The German carmaker is cautiously optimistic about extending the growth this year as it believes sales could be affected by the government's decision to hike customs duty in Budget 2018.

    Mr Roland Folger, Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India said that "It might be a challenge to sustain this momentum in the coming quarters," adding that the spike in Q1 sales was due to the advancement of sales ahead of the customs duty-induced price hike.

    For motor vehicles brought to India via the CKD (completely knocked down) route, the customs duty on imported engine components was hiked from 7.5/10 percent to 15 percent and duty on the vehicle parts that are an element of the CKD kits was raised from 10 percent to 15 percent. For cars brought to India as full imports, the rate on one section of customs duty has been hiked from 20 percent to 25 percent.

    STUTTGART (AFN/DPA) - Het Duitse autoconcern Daimler, moederbedrijf van Mercedes-Benz en Smart, heeft in het eerste kwartaal een hogere omzet behaald dan een jaar eerder. Wel werd de omzetgroei geremd door wisselkoerseffecten door de sterkere euro. De winst viel lager uit dan een jaar eerder.

    De omzet steeg met 3 procent tot 39,8 miljard euro ten opzichte van een jaar geleden. Als wisselkoerseffecten niet worden meegerekend was de omzet met 8 procent toegenomen. De nettowinst kwam uit op 2,35 miljard euro, tegen bijna 2,7 miljard euro een jaar eerder, toen mede werd geprofiteerd van eenmalige baten.

    De wereldwijde verkoop van auto's en commerciële voertuigen zoals trucks en bussen ging met 7 procent bijna 807.000. Bij Mercedes-Benz was met een verkoopgroei van 5 procent tot 594.300 auto's sprake van het beste eerste kwartaal ooit.

    Het bedrijf uit Stuttgart rekent voor heel 2018 op een lichte stijging van de verkoop, omzet en winst voor belastingen.

    Daimler joins China's Responsible Cobalt Initiative

    Reuters reported that German carmaker Daimler has joined the Responsible Cobalt Initiative, a program established under a Chinese industry body to tackle risks in the cobalt supply chain arising from artisanal mining. Cobalt consumers are under pressure to ensure the material they use is not tainted by child labour in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the source of about 60% of the world's cobalt.

    Amnesty International says about a fifth of the country's cobalt production is mined by hand by informal miners including children, often in dangerous conditions.

    Daimler, owner of the Mercedes Brand, joined the RCI at the start of April, RCI Chairman Sun Lihui told Reuters.

    A Daimler spokesperson said that "With the Responsible Cobalt Initiative, Mercedes-Benz Cars is taking steps to combat the social and environmental risks in the cobalt value chain."

    Mr Sun said that "Transparency and governance will be improved and the risks of child labour diminished"

    The RCI, which groups high-profile cobalt users such as Apple, Sony Corp and Volvo, was established under the China Chamber of Commerce of Metals, Minerals and Chemicals Importers and Exporters in 2016.

    Mr Sun said the RCI plans to set standards for a clean supply chain for cobalt, adding that firms in the industry should be given time to resolve problems associated with artisanal mining.

    Mr Sun said that "Our red line of artisanal mining standards is zero child labour." Mr Sun added that "The improvement of the supply chain cannot be done by one or two companies. It requires the whole supply chain and consumers' joint effort."

    The RCI last week held a meeting in Paris with the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, where it presented its draft audit standards for cobalt refiners.

    The draft, which is open for public consultation until May 9, includes requirements such as the avoidance by cobalt refiners of cash transactions where practicable, and conducting a risk assessment "on all cobalt material sourced".

    Participants at the Paris meeting included producers, consumers, non-governmental organisations and representatives of the DRC.

    Cobalt is a key ingredient in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries used for electric vehicles.

    It has increasingly come under the spotlight as automakers lay out plans for huge investments in electric vehicles, demand for which is accelerating as governments around the world move to cut noxious emissions from carbon fuels.

    These plans have fuelled expectations of cobalt shortages and spurred a price rally to near USD 44 a lb from below USD 10 in December 2015.

    Sources say the price surge will encourage artisanal mining.

    One cobalt industry source said that "The supply chain will respond by producing more artisanal material."

    Daimler announced Q1 result

    Daimler AG made a good start to the year 2018 and again increased sales and revenue. Daimler has sold 806,900 cars and commercial vehicles worldwide in the first three months of 2018, surpassing the number sold in the prior-year period by 7%. All of the automotive divisions contributed to the best-ever unit sales in a first quarter, especially Mercedes-Benz Cars with its most successful first quarter of all time (594,300 units; +5%) and Daimler Trucks with a significant sales increase of 21% to 113,800 units. The Group’s first-quarter revenue amounted to EUR 39.8 billion, which is 3% above the prior-year level. Adjusted for exchange-rate effects, revenue grew by 8%.

    The Daimler Group achieved first-quarter EBIT of EUR 3,335 million in 2018, which is significantly below its prior-year earnings of EUR 3,771 million. Net profit for the first quarter of 2018 of EUR 2,354 million was significantly below the prior-year figure of EUR 2,652 million. Net profit attributable to the shareholders of Daimler AG amounts to EUR 2,273 million (Q1 2017: EUR 2,557 million), representing a decrease in earnings per share to EUR 2.12 (Q1 2017: EUR 2.39).

    The Mercedes-Benz Cars division slightly improved upon its prior-year earnings, mainly due to the very positive development of unit sales of the S-Class and SUV models. Daimler Trucks’ earnings were at the prior-year level. In the first quarter of the previous year, the gain of EUR 267 million on the sale of real estate by Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation in Japan had a positive effect on earnings. Mercedes-Benz Vans and Daimler Buses each posted an EBIT significantly lower than in the first quarter of last year. At Daimler Financial Services, growth in contract volume led to a slight increase in earnings. Exchange-rate effects had an overall slightly negative impact on operating profit. The reconciliation of segment earnings to Group EBIT also had a negative impact on earnings in the first quarter of 2018. The positive effect in the prior-year quarter was primarily due to the reversal of an impairment of Daimler’s equity investment in BAIC Motor Corporation Ltd. (BAIC Motor).

    Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars said that “We are sustainably continuing along our profitable growth course and sold more vehicles in a first quarter than ever before. We aim to continue building on this and to further consolidate our leading position in the premium segment, because we have big plans for the future. With the five pillars of our strategy – CORE, CASE, CULTURE, COMPANY and CUSTOMER – we are ideally prepared for the transformation of the industry and of our company.”

    The five strategic areas comprise the expansion of the core business, pushing forward with the CASE topics, further developing the corporate culture, optimizing the company’s structure, and above all, focusing on the customers.

    Constellium supplies aluminium Auto Body Sheet for Mercedes-Benz

    Constellium N V announced that it will be the primary supplier of aluminium Auto Body Sheet for the new Mercedes-Benz CLS model, which was released at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show. This four-door coupe entered the market in March 2018.

    Constellium will provide the coils for the outer trunk lid panels and fenders of the Mercedes-Benz CLS. Constellium’s Surfalex, which offers high surface quality as well as specific hemming and roping properties, has been chosen by Mercedes to achieve the new pioneering structure and look set by Mercedes designers. Surfalex is the ideal material for demanding skin quality for closure parts and provides solutions for the most trendsetting design requests while contributing to lightweighting.

    Daimler to buy electric car battery from China's CATL

    Reuters reported that Daimler has awarded a contract for supplying electric car battery cells to China's Contemporary Amperex Technology. German carmaker's procurement executive, Sabine Angermann at a press conference in Stuttgart, Germany, to discuss sourcing of raw materials for electric car batteries declined to reveal further details about the volume of the supply contract and whether it goes beyond supplying battery cells for Mercedes-Benz cars built outside of China.

    Daimler reiterated it had joined the Responsible Cobalt Initiative, a programme established under a Chinese industry body to tackle risks in the cobalt supply chain arising from artisanal mining.
