22 maart 2016: Brill acquires three leading academic journals Publishing 2016, March 22 Leiden (NL) / Boston (MA) / Singapore (SG) – 22 March 2016 Three of Italy’s leading academic journals join Brill’s publishing program. Professor Michele Bernardini, the Director of the Department of Asian, African and Mediterranean studies of the Università degli Studi di Napoli “L’Orientale” signed an agreement by which three leading academic journals join Brill’s publishing programs on Asian studies, Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies, and African Studies. The journals will start publishing with Brill, both online and in print, in 2016. Previously the journals were published by the “Orientale” itself. About the journals The Annali, sezione Orientale are being published since 1929. The scope includes the languages, literatures, arts, history and material culture of Asia, Africa and the Mediterranean. The time period covered ranges from the Ancient Near East to the modern period. Full-size articles and smaller research notes are accepted in English, Italian, French, German, and Spanish. The journal is edited by Gianfrancesco Lusini (Naples). Eurasian Studies focuses on the history of Eurasia, covering the period from the rise of Islam to the outbreak of the First World War. It encourages the publication of unedited documents, sources and literary texts, both in facsimile and in transcription. A substantial section is devoted to the review of recent publications. Founded at the Istituto per l’Oriente C.A. Nallino in Rome in 1994, the journal is edited by Michele Bernardini (Naples) and Jürgen Paul (Halle, Germany). Ming Qing Yanjiu, founded in 1992, is a peer reviewed journal dedicated primarily to advanced studies of pre-modern China. This journal provides a forum for scholars from a variety of fields related to late imperial and early republican period that aim to have a cross-disciplinary discourse. Contributions in sociology, literature, psychology, anthropology, history, geography, linguistics, semiotics, political science, and philosophy, as well as book reviews are welcome. The journal is edited by Donatella Guida (Naples). Reactions Professor Donatella Guida, the editor-in-chief of Ming Qing Yanjiu: “Having Brill as a partner creates a wealth of opportunities for our editorial project. Over the course of the last decades, Ming Qing Yanjiu has built an increasing network of scholars and readers all over the world, aiming to become a trusted space for the study of late-imperial China; now, thanks to Brill's long-standing international prestige as a top-tier scholarly publisher, we will be able to consolidate our past results, at the same time setting wider and more ambitious goals for the future. For a journal like ours, which is devoted to a specific - albeit chronologically and thematically vast - field of study, this collaboration really marks the opening of a new and exciting path, especially in terms of visibility and circulation.” “We are very happy to include this cross-disciplinary journal in our portfolio on China Studies,” says Senior Acquisitions Qin Higley of Brill’s Boston office about Ming Qing Yanjiu. Michele Bernardini: “The Annali of the Naples University “L’Orientale” is one of the oldest Italian Journals devoted to Oriental and African Studies. Since the beginnings of the 20th century the journal has published articles on archaeology, philology, history, literature, produced by the international academic milieu. The new partnership with Brill will combine the journal’s long-established experience with a larger diffusion in the global academic environment.” For customer queries and product trials please contact your librarian, or send an email to our Sales department at sales-us@brill.com (the Americas) or sales-nl@brill.com (Europe, Middle East, Africa & Asia-Pacific). 26 maart 2016: Brill launches Major Reference Work Publishing 2016, March 24 Leiden (NL) / Boston (MA) / Singapore (SG) – 24 March 2016 Brill launches Major Reference Work 'Textual History of the Bible' Judaism would not be what it is today without the Bible. This foundation of Judaism has been transmitted and translated by both Jews and Christian over three millennia. The Dead Sea Scrolls and other ancient witnesses show that scribes and translators have created manifold texts and translations. While doing so they wrote and rewrote the texts, inserted their interpretations and occasionally even erred. The so-called "text of the Bible" has a multitude of ancient translations. The scholars, students and the interested public that want to be informed about these areas are often at a loss in their search for an appropriate reference work. Until today there was no such comprehensive reference work to study the Bible in its many versions and to understand its complicated textual history. Brill, the international scholarly publisher, has launched a groundbreaking Major Reference Work for the study of textual history of the Jewish Bible and the Christian Old Testament: Textual History of the Bible. It aims to bring together all available information regarding the textual history, textual character, translation techniques, manuscripts, and the importance of each textual witness for each book of the Hebrew Bible, including its deuterocanonical scriptures. In addition, it includes entries on the history of research, the editorial histories, as well as its auxiliary fields such a papyrology, codicology, and linguistics. THB is an excellent starting point for text-critical analysis of all biblical versions and books, as it offers the reader information about all the textual evidence for a specific biblical book and all the evidence for a specific textual source in one reference work. Professor Armin Lange, General Editor: “THB is a good starting point for text-critical analysis of all biblical versions and books because it offers the reader information about all the textual evidence for a specific biblical book and all the evidence for a specific textual source. I have had the pleasure to conduct an orchestra of the best experts in this field who feel, like I do, that this work is a unique contribution which will forever change the field and which resulted in one grand finale; volume 1 covering the books of the Hebrew canon, each with primary and secondary translations.” Professor Emanuel Tov, co-editor of the first volume: “Due to the many discoveries of texts and important new studies, textual criticism of the Hebrew Bible and its translations is flourishing in the twenty-first century. THB brings all the new data together in up-to-date articles that give an excellent overview of current research and its many innovations will stimulate subsequent investigations.” Senior Acquisitions Editor Suzanne Mekking praised the publication of the THB: “This reference work makes a great contribution to modern scholarship and is a jewel in the crown of Brill’s expanding list of reference works in Biblical Studies. Textual History of the Bible will be used by generations of students and scholars studying textual criticism, textual history, linguistics, the Hebrew Bible, the deuterocanonical texts, Antiquity, Ancient texts, the Ancient Greek language, Dead Sea Scrolls, Ancient Near East, Judaism, and Biblical Studies.” For more information, please see brill.com/thbo (online edition) and brill.com/thb (print edition). For customer queries and product trials please contact your librarian, or send an email to our Sales department at sales-us@brill.com (the Americas) or sales-nl@brill.com (Europe, Middle East, Africa & Asia-Pacific). Nieuws gepubliceerd op:2016, April 08 Brill Starts Partnership with Kudos Publishing Leiden (NL) / Boston (USA) / Singapore (SG) – 8 April 2016 International publisher Brill has signed an agreement with Kudos to help authors maximize their impact. Starting April 2016, the Kudos platform will be available for all authors within Brill’s publishing program. Kudos is a platform which allows authors to enrich their publications, and to maximize their visibility, by providing new means to engage with their digital community on social media, in just a few clicks. By providing this new service, Brill will further improve the dissemination and visibility of their high quality research. “Our new partnership marries Brill’s long tradition in publishing high quality scholarly research with the Kudos team’s expertise in new media and its ability to help increase visibility and impact of research,” says Charlie Rapple, Sales & Marketing Director and Co-founder of Kudos. “We are proud to be working with Brill and look forward to helping their researchers broaden the reach of their work.” "Today’s top quality service to authors asks for support in the digital world as well. Kudos helps Brill to further improve that top quality author service and at the same time creates better visibility for its publications. A valuable innovation has been added to Brill’s 333 years of publishing experience," says Peter Coebergh, EVP Sales & Marketing. For more information, contact Caroline van Erp, Marketing Manager: erp@brill.com . About Brill Founded in 1683 in Leiden, the Netherlands, Brill is a leading international academic publisher in 20 main subject areas, including Middle East and Islamic Studies, Asian Studies, Classical Studies, History, Biblical and Religious Studies, Language & Linguistics, Biology, and International Law. With offices in Leiden and Boston and a representative office in Singapore, Brill today publishes 243 journals and around 1000 new books and reference works each year, available in both print and electronic form. Brill also markets a large number of primary source research collections and databases. The company’s key customers are academic and research institutions, libraries, and scholars. Brill is a publicly traded company and is listed on Euronext Amsterdam NV. For more information, visit www.brill.com. About Kudos Kudos is a new service that helps researchers and their institutions to measure, monitor and maximize the visibility and impact of their published articles. It builds on three core principles: that readers are increasingly struggling to filter the growing quantity of published research; that information which supports filtering – such as lay summaries and impact statements – often exists but is not made public; and that authors are well placed to increase awareness and impact of their own work, but don't always know how to do this. Kudos provides a platform for assembling or creating information to help filtering, for sharing information to drive discovery, and for measuring and monitoring the effect of these activities. nieuws gepubliceerd op:2016, April 11 Brill Books Now Indexed by Google Scholar Publishing Leiden (NL) / Boston (USA) / Singapore (SG) – 11 April 2016 As one of the first publishers, Brill’s edited book volumes will be indexed by Google Scholar, the most influential web search engine for the scholarly world. Google Scholar allows users to search for digital or physical copies of articles, whether online or in libraries. It indexes full-text journal articles, technical reports, preprints, theses, books, and other scholarly documents. So far, Google Scholar has already been indexing Brill’s journal articles. As of now, this is also the case for Brill’s e-books. Albert Schoenmaker, Senior Product Manager Platforms with Brill: “We see that Google Scholar is an important discovery tool for scholars to find our journal articles. In Brill’s main subject areas, books are an important channel for scholarly communication. Our users will welcome the enhancement of Google Scholar in relevant books in their field." Brill has adjusted its Books and Journals platform to allow book content to be indexed by Google Scholar, thus improving the discoverability of this content. The adjustments have been made in close cooperation with platform provider Ingenta. Justin Ackerman, Customer Services Director at Ingenta commented: “We have been working closely with Google Scholar for some time now, looking at innovative ways to link researchers with the wealth of information available via our platforms. Our work on BrillOnline should significantly improve the discovery of its book titles via the indexing facility and ultimately drive more traffic to the site as a result.” For more information, please contact Albert Schoenmaker, Sr. Product Manager Platforms: Schoenmaker@brill.com
nieuws gepubliceerd op: 2016, April 14 Trading Update Q1-2016 Brill reports continued growth of digital and subscription based products Revenues developed as expected in the first quarter of 2016, ending up just over 2015. We continue to see healthy growth in the digital and subscription based formats - especially eBooks and reference works - and we benefited from good sales of digital primary source products. Revenue from print books decreased from the first quarter of 2015, partly due to timing differences in the publishing schedule. Journal subscription income shows growth in line with expectations. Earlier this year our representative office in Singapore was turned into a limited company to help us grow our business in Asia. The new set up for printing, fulfillment and distribution in North America was completed in the first quarter and the changes are starting to contribute to results. Other measures were implemented to improve the profitability of our publishing programs such as differential pricing, pruning of underperforming book series and more efficient content management. The translation of the stronger dollar will add to these measures in 2016. In line with company policy, Brill does not issue a concrete outlook for the year end. Over 2015 an all cash dividend of € 1.24 will be proposed to shareholders. The AGM will take place on Thursday, May 19 th (2.00 PM) at the premises of the Company in Leiden, The Netherlands.

Nieuws gepubliceerd door Brill op 24 mei j.l.Shanghai Library Acquires the Blaeu-Van der Hem Facsimile Atlas from Brill Publishing 2016, May 24 Leiden (NL) / Boston (USA) / Singapore (SG) – 24 May 2016The Rare Books Collection of Shanghai Library acquires the facsimile edition of the famous Blaeu-Van der Hem Atlas, produced in a limited 8-volume edition, distributed by Brill. The superbly produced facsimile edition of the famous Blaeu-Van der Hem Atlas is unique for several reasons. The original, without doubt one of the most significant and unique atlases in the world, is kept at the Austrian National Library in Vienna. In 2004, UNESCO added it to the tangible listing of World Heritage, also referred to as the ‘Memory of the World’, to preserve it for the future. The facsimile edition contains the most important volumes: the so-called four ‘secret VOC atlases’, volume 42 on China, and notably other parts of Asia, Africa and America. Shanghai Library in more than one way is a deserving location to house one of the copies of this atlas, particularly the volume on China. The festive launch took place in the Bibliotheca Zi-Ka-Wei, or Xujiahui Library, which was established by the Jesuits in 1830 and contained many of the published writings of the Jesuits who were based in Mainland China. One of these was the work from Martino Martini (1614- 1661). Professor Ma Yong, a member of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said about Martini: "Martini was the first to study the history and geography of China with rigorous scientific objectivity; the extent of his knowledge of the Chinese culture, the accuracy of his investigations, the depth of his understanding of things Chinese are examples for the modern sinologists". At the festive launch the deputy director of Shanghai Library, Professor Zhou, and Brill’s Representative, Mrs. Kanis presented the atlas and held speeches on the importance of this acquisition. The presentation was attended by management and staff of Shanghai Library as well as library representatives of the various Shanghai Libraries, including Fudan University, Shanghai University, Shanghai Normal University, Jiao Tong University, the District Library, etc. For more information on this acquisition or the atlas, contact Ms. Liang Su at Shanghai Library (sliang@libnet.sh.cn, +86-21-54560585) or Ms. Liesbeth Kanis at Brill (kanis@brill.com, +65-82981548).

Philological Encounters Philological Encounters Philological Encounters’ advisory board member Prof. Sheldon Pollock (Columbia University) said that "Philology is being reborn across the globe. But if it is to fully develop its new and dynamic identity—as a transhistorical and transregional, comparative and critical discipline—and thereby reclaim its central role in both the academy and public life, we must have a journal that fully embodies those aspirations. Philological Encounters is that journal, and world philologists welcome it with open arms." “This new journal is a perfect fit for Brill’s publishing program,” says Kathy van Vliet, Acquisitions Editor and responsible for the new journal at Brill. “Philological Encounters welcomes contributions of critical and comparative perspectives that integrate textual scholarship and the study of language from across the world and across all disciplines within the Humanities.” For general information about this journal, please contact Kathy van Vliet, Acquisitions Editor at Brill: vliet@brill.com .
