    23 Nov, 2021, 5:30 am

Octopus Hydrogen, Octopus Renewables and MIRA Technology Park have confirmed plans to develop a green refuelling forecourt providing hydrogen and EV charging on site at MIRA Technology Park to support the needs of the fastest growing cluster of automotive and mobility technology businesses that are powering the mobility revolution.

Octopus’s solution brings together the group’s hydrogen business focused on providing green hydrogen-as-a-service to accelerate adoption alongside Octopus Renewables, who will supply power from a purpose-built 7MW ground-mounted solar array located alongside the forecourt at MTP.

MTP is home to 40 global titans of the zero-carbon mobility revolution, with a growing number focused on fuel cell technology, and many others seeking to incorporate a green hydrogen solution into their array of different motive power options. On-site green hydrogen supply will catalyse the momentum of the cluster that has recently seen new tenancies announced from companies including REE and Viritech – with the latter exclusively focused on the development of hydrogen technologies.

Octopus’ new on-site generation will supply MIRA Technology Park’s businesses with sufficient green hydrogen to support the equivalent of 60 cars’ worth of fuel per day. On the forecourt, a number of high-power EV chargers delivering up to 300kW will also be installed to build on the existing network of over 70 charging points already onsite at MIRA Technology Park.

DHL Express is piloting the first hydrogen truck throughout Deutsche Post DHL Group
? Apple is the first customer to test the new logistics solution
? The truck is part of a European testing program operating between the Netherlands and
    Belgium
? The pilot is part of the de-carbonization strategy of Deutsche Post DHL Group
Bonn/Breda, November 23, 2021: DHL Express, the world's leading international express service provider, is the first within Deutsche Post DHL Group to test hydrogen-fueled trucks for the long haul. Together with its customer Apple, DHL pilots the vehicle between Breda, the Netherlands, and Brussels, Belgium, as part of the Interreg NW Europe program H2-Share, coordinated by WaterstofNet. The program's goal is to facilitate the development of low-carbon heavy-duty vehicles on hydrogen for logistic applications and gain practical experience in different regions. It creates a transnational living lab and basis for the development of the zero-emission heavy-duty vehicle industry.
“In a globalized world, sustainable and clean fuels are essential for climate-neutral logistics. Not only for sea and air freight but also line-haul road freight, as these help reduce CO2 emissions,” says Alberto Nobis, CEO DHL Express Europe. “That's why we engage not only in the electrification of our fleet but also invest in the development of alternative drive systems for very long ranges. The project shows that we can achieve truly emission-free logistics in Europe if we join forces and build on experience.”
While battery-electric trucks can operate efficiently within last-mile delivery, fuels from renewable energies such as hydrogen are essential for zero-emission line-haul. Due to their vast potential, DHL Express is now testing a heavy-duty vehicle, with a fuel cell range extender from VDL. The truck, operated by Dutch Nassau Sneltransport, covers a daily distance of around 200 km, running the cross- border route between the Netherlands and Belgium. The truck refuels on a daily basis in Breda at a mobile fuel station from Wystrach as part of the project. It transports deliveries of DHL Express’ customer Apple. During the two-month piloting phase, up to 350 tons of CO2 can be saved with the new technology.

Toyota & DRIVR Bring Hydrogen Taxis to Copenhagen

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    26 Nov, 2021, 5:30 am

The green conversion of taxi services is in full swing. The Danish government’s aim is that no new taxis emit CO2 or air pollution from 2025 and by 2030 all moving taxis must be zero-emission cars. On Friday 5 November, Toyota and the taxi service DRIVR have put over 100 hydrogen taxis on the roads in Copenhagen, supporting the political goals for a greener taxi industry. When you get into a new taxi in Copenhagen in 2025, it should emit neither CO2 nor any kind of air pollution. This is the Danish government’s objective for the taxi industry, which must take the lead in the green transition like public bus traffic, according to local politicians.

The app-based taxi service, DRIVR, is one of the taxi companies that is at the forefront of the green transition. As a customer it has long been possible to choose between hybrid, electric and hydrogen cars. Now DRIVR significantly increases the number of hydrogen taxis in the fleet and has put over 100 hydrogen taxis on the roads in Copenhagen at the beginning of November in collaboration with Toyota. All 100 cars are Toyota Mirai fuel cell vehicles, the world’s first mass-produced hydrogen car, only emitting water while driving.

There is no doubt that the taxi industry is a key driver of the green transition. They are in constant operation and travel many kilometers especially in the big cities every single day. The switch from black diesel to green hydrogen ensures the same operation and flexible mobility, just without harmful emissions.

The many new taxis help create the necessary take-off of hydrogen at the service stations, which is essential for the development of the infrastructure. And then the taxis are rolling showcases for green hydrogen technology, which is an area where the strong Danish value chain of subcontractors is among the world’s best.

Tejs Laustsen Jensen, CEO Hydrogen Denmark

After one of Denmark’s largest public tenders for taxi services, the City of Copenhagen, has chosen DRIVR to handle the entire municipality’s so-called ‘adhoc taxi service’. This means that children with disabilities, mentally challenged citizens, citizens on their way to the hospital, municipal employees on duty and politicians will in future be transported completely emission-free in hydrogen cars when driving by taxi.

DRIVR’s over 100 hydrogen taxis have been launched as part of the European hydrogen for transport projects, Hydrogen Mobility Europe 2 (H2ME2) and Zero Emission Fleet vehicles For European Rollout (ZEFER), supported by The Hydrogen And Fuel Cell Joint Undertaking (FCH JU), in which both the City of Copenhagen, Toyota and the Hydrogen industry are partners. The project aims to spread hydrogen solutions for transport across the EU and has contributed to both wagons and hydrogen refueling stations in Denmark.

Exploration properties leading to deposits in battery minerals including nickel and cobalt.
Extensive gold properties in Iceland with ongoing exploration
    The Political and Economic Landscape

It has taken society a very long time to get here, but it appears that saving the planet is finally more than a buzz phrase used by environmental scientists and anti-climate change activists. Here in 2021, six years after the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, protecting the planet is no longer a nice idea that we really should get started on; it has become an urgent dilemma that demands immediate, significant, and ongoing action. The climate summit of 2015, known as COP2, led to a binding treaty that committed countries to keep global warming below 2 degrees Celsius, compared to preindustrial levels, and to reach a “climate neutral world” by 2050. Since that time, and increasing in momentum each year, it has become good politics to support and engineer green solutions to the world’s climate issues. And whatever direction good politics takes, good business is never far behind (or ahead).

One could argue that among the biggest corporate beneficiaries of this new greener business landscape is none other than Tesla, the dominant electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer in the world. With its publicly-stated mission to “accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy”, Elon Musk’s EV and battery storage company has become one of the flag bearers for not only a greener economy, but also a more progressive stock market, where ethical investing is finally becoming congruent with profitable investing.

Wartsila & RINA to Deliver Hydrogen Fuel Solutions

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    01 Dec, 2021, 5:30 am

The technology group Wärtsilä, together with class society RINA, ABB, Helbio, a subsidiary of Metacon AB, the Liberian Registry and energy major have joined forces in an effort to deliver a solution with hydrogen as fuel. The aim is to have a scalable and sustainable solution that will exceed the IMO 2050 target for a 70 percent reduction in carbon intensity without the need for an extensive infrastructure investment. This offers the shipping industry a pathway to low-carbon operations within a reasonable time frame.

Current difficulties and cost considerations regarding the production, distribution, and onboard storage of hydrogen have so far limited the sector’s interest in its direct use as a marine fuel. However, by producing hydrogen onboard, and using readily available LNG, the solution becomes far more viable and in a much faster time than would otherwise be possible.

The concept is based on combining LNG with steam to produce hydrogen and CO2. The hydrogen produced will be used directly in a mix with natural gas in internal combustion engines or in fuel cells, thus eliminating the need for hydrogen to be stored onboard. The CO2 will be liquefied using the cryogenic stream of LNG that would be used as fuel anyway, and later disposed ashore for carbon storage. Tankers can use the stored CO2 as inert gas during discharge.

The necessary equipment can easily be fitted on the deck of a commercial vessel. This innovative concept will support the marine sector’s gradual transition from LNG to hydrogen, without any major adjustments to a vessel’s onboard technologies.

Only LNG bunkering will be required and, by progressively increasing the production of hydrogen, the consumption of fossil methane and associated methane slip will be reduced at the same rate.

Wärtsilä and ABB will support the application of hydrogen in powering internal combustion engines and fuel cells respectively, while Helbio will provide the technology and manufacturing of gas reformers. RINA and the Liberian Registry will provide advice and guidance on the application of rules and regulations for novel concept alternative designs, based on Hazid/Hazop analyses, as well as specific rules for this kind of arrangement.

Toyota GR Yaris Hydrogen lust waterstof!
    Lars Krijgsman 18 uur geleden

The full scale HySeas III test was launched at the KONGSBERG facility in Ågotnes, Norway on December 1st 2021.

The program is the third and final part of the EU funded project "HySeas" which has been running since 2013 to prepare and demonstrate a scalable hydrogen system for ships and ferries. KONGSBERG has been the technical lead of the project, which has involved participants from Scotland, Denmark, France, Germany, Sweden and England.

In this final stage, KONGSBERG has built a full-scale electric propulsion system based on hydrogen-powered fuel cells at Ågotnes outside Bergen. The system will now undertake a 4-month testing program for validation purposes with the aim of verifying the final design for an H2-powered RoPax ferry. The drivetrain testing is intended to demonstrate the ease with which H2 fuel cells can be successfully integrated with a proven marine hybrid electric drive system.

The testing mirrors the operational loads which would be experienced by a vessel on a route between Kirkwall and Shapinsay in Orkney. It will confirm safe operation and power and fuel capacity requirements, together with other valuable information to feed back to the vessel design team at Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd) in Scotland. CMAL plans to complete the design in March 2022. Hydrogen fuel will be generated through wind power at the ferry port.
