Trump Trade War - Japan may soon notify WTO of countermeasures against US Japan Times, citing sources close to the matter, reported that Japanese government may soon notify the World Trade Organization of its plans to consider measures against higher tariffs imposed by the US on steel imports. As per report “With the move resulting in an additional JPY 50 billion (USD 452 million) in tariffs, Japan’s government is expected to consider countermeasures with the figure in mind. But it does not plan to identify specific items. We will decide whether to actually raise tariffs depending on future developments.” Japan’s top government spokesman, Yoshihide Suga, conceded the government was considering taking “necessary” steps based on WTO rules. But he said no final decision has been made on whether to take retaliatory steps. Under WTO rules, when a country raises tariffs to protect its domestic industry, affected countries can do the same to cancel out the impact. The envisaged move is different from a dispute settlement under the WTO. Japan has been lobbying the United States, its key ally, to exempt it from President Donald Trump’s decision to impose higher tariffs said to defend national security. But the request has not yet been met. Source : Japan Times

Tokyo Steel to maintain steel prices in June, for fourth month Reuters reported that Tokyo Steel Manufacturing Co Ltd, Japan’s top electric-arc furnace steelmaker would keep product prices steady in June to ensure its earlier hikes were absorbed by the market. This is the fourth straight month that the company has kept prices the same. Prices for steel bars, including rebar, will stay steady at 69,000 yen (USD 621) a tonne, while prices for its main product, H-shaped beams, will stay unchanged at 89,000 yen. Tokyo Steel’s Managing Director Kiyoshi Imamura told reporters at a briefing. That “Activities in the local steel industry are picking up, but our price hikes earlier this year have not been fully absorbed by the market. But we are hopeful that the time will become ripe soon for more hikes as end-users such as makers of cars, electronics and machineries as well as trading houses which handle steel-making raw materials have reported strong earnings for the year just ended, outperforming steelmakers’ results.” He added that strong demand in China, the world’s biggest steel consumer, is also expected to continue this year, supporting global steel markets. Trump Trade War - Strong global demand mutes impact - Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Reuters reported that strong global demand has helped cushion the impact on Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp of new US import duties, but Japan’s top steelmaker remains worried Washington’s trade barriers could lead to a glut in Asia, its much bigger market. Nippon Steel Executive Vice President Katsuhiro Miyamoto told Reuters in an interview that “There has been no major impact from the U.S. tariffs thanks to solid global demand.” Mr Miyamoto said that Nippon Steel, whose US bound steel cargoes account for 4 percent of its total exports, saw more than 90% of its customers continuing to buy its products even after the tariffs were imposed because they are specialized products such as rails and seamless pipes. He added that its US subsidiaries which have a combined production capacity of 7.1 million tonnes are benefiting from stronger local prices. He said that “But we are closely watching where the products that were shut out from the United States are going as they could hurt Asian market if they come to this area.” Mr Miyamoto said that “Japan’s demand in construction and automobiles is solid. In China, consumer spending is also strong and there are lots of infrastructure projects such as subways and apartments near the stations.” Given a healthy demand outlook and its increased spending to upgrade ageing facilities, Nippon Steel plans to boost its crude steel output, on parent basis, to more than 42.6 million tonnes in the current year to March 2019, from 40.67 million tonnes a year ago. Mr Miyamoto said that the company also aims to improve margins by hiking product prices to help absorb rising costs of auxiliary materials such as manganese and zinc and distribution expenses. De All Ordinaries in Sydney verloor 0,5 procent.
Kyoei Steel holds rebar prices steady for June contracts Platts reported that Kyoei Steel, Japan’s largest rebar producer, announced that it would keep its rebar prices unchanged for June contracts. Osaka based Kyoei does not reveal its list price, but current market price of base sized rebar in Osaka was around Yen 67,000 to 68,000 per tonne (USD 611 to USD 620 per tonne), unchanged from a month ago, while in Tokyo it was around Yen 73,000 to 74,000 per tonne, up Yen 2,000 per tonne. Kyoei said that despite higher costs of alloy, electrodes as well as freight charges have been increasing largely, it would maintain its prices for June. The company would monitor the market before announcing its prices for July. The steelmaker last hiked its rebar prices by Yen 3,000 per tonne. A Tokyo-based construction steel trader said that rebar producers were eyeing Yen 75,000 per tonne amid higher production costs. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has forecast Japan’s small bar demand from the construction sector in June to fall 5% on the year to 600,000 tonne, which would be, however, 11% higher from May. Japan considering financing Russia's Yamal LNG project Sputnik reported that Japan is considering participation in financing Russia's Yamal LNG project, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said. “As for the traditional sphere [of cooperation with Russia], the energy sector, we are also working on various projects, including on Sakhalin, we continue to consider the possibility of Yamal LNG, the construction and financing of these projects," Abe said at a St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) session. The shareholders are Novatek (50.1 percent), France's Total (20 percent), as well as Chinese CNPC (20 percent) and the Silk Road Fund (9.9 percent). The project's cost is estimated at USD 27 billion. SPIEF, held annually in Russia's second largest city of St. Petersburg, is a major global platform for communication between business representatives and the discussion of crucial economic issues. The event started on Thursday and will continue through Saturday. Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency is the official media partner of the forum. Source : Sputnik
Toyota Motor to build fuel cell stack plant, ramp up fuel cell vehicle sales from 2020 Reuters quoted Toyota Motor Corp as saying that it plans to build a plant to manufacture hydrogen fuel cell stacks, a key component of fuel cell vehicles, as it seeks to mass manufacture hydrogen-powered cars to expand their usage as a zero emissions alternative to gasoline vehicles. The plant will be built on the grounds of its Honsha Plant in Toyota City, near its global headquarters, Toyota said in a statement, adding that it was also building a dedicated line at its nearby Shimoyama plant to produce the tanks which store high-pressure hydrogen gas in vehicles. Toyota said it planned to increase global annual sales of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), including passenger cars and busses, to at least 30,000 from 3,000 now. Source : Reuters
In Japan, in the websites like this IEX, or info pages provided by any stock company, have more info or different kind of info. For example, there's always info about 'remaining short & long amount, and their proportional rate.' When there are a lot of actual short positions in the market, these short positions must be closed (i.e. bought back) one day in the near future. So, Japanese stock people think these are the important data for the stock buyers. But I cannot yet find any these info about AEM AMX. Are those info public somewhere?
