German vehicle exports from US to China slump Reuters reported that German carmakers appealed on Monday for tariff-free trade to preserve jobs in Europe and the United States, as the country's auto industry association reported exports of German light vehicles from the United States to China dropped 37 percent last year. German auto industry association VDA said that a trade conflict between the United States and China is having an adverse impact on the German auto industry, which operates four large light-vehicle factories in the United States and employs 118,000 people there. VDA said that German carmakers shipped 95,000 light vehicles, including SUVs and crossovers, made by BMW and Mercedes-Benz from the United States to China last year, down from 150,000 a year earlier. It said that German carmakers produced 750,000 vehicles at their U.S. plants, of which 56 percent were exported to Europe and China, while around 470,000 vehicles made by German carmakers were imported to the United States from Europe. Mr Klaus Braeunig, managing director of the German Association of the Automotive Industry, at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit said that "Recent developments once again proved that the automotive industry and the jobs it provides depend heavily on free and fair trade.” Mr Braeunig said in a statement that "This is why we are deeply concerned about the direction that US trade policy has taken since 2017. We should always keep in mind that together the EU and the US account for 50 percent of world trade.” Source : Reuters
Volkswagen may face new diesel recall in Europe – Report Automotive News reported that as many as 370,000 Volkswagen Group diesel cars could be recalled or pulled off the road in Europe if Germany’s transport regulator concludes the company cheated when it fixed polluting vehicles, Bild am Sonntag newspaper reported. The newspaper reported that the regulator accuses VW of manipulating emissions-related software on vehicles with 1.2-liter engines. The newspaper said that KBA was considering forcing 30,000 affected cars off the road, although it was more likely just to order further remedial work. Prosecutors were preparing charges against unnamed Volkswagen managers for suspected fraud, The Bild am Sonntag said. It said VW had given assurances in 2016 that the 1.2-liter engines did not use illegal emissions cheating defeat devices. The Federal Ministry of Transport said Sunday that the accusations are known and the transport watchdog is investigating the case, but proceedings haven’t been completed. Hearings will be held in the coming week, Bild am Sonntag said. A VW spokesman said internal quality controls for diesel cars with 1.2 -liter engines, model EA189, had revealed irregularities that were now being analyzed. He said VW had informed the authorities and the company was in continuous dialogue with them. VW has had to recall hundreds of thousands of cars around the world since it admitted in Sept. 2015 to installing illegal software in diesel engines to cheat strict US anti pollution tests. Ford revamps Explorer SUV for 1st time since 2011 model year Ford's aging Explorer big SUV is getting a major revamp as it faces growing competition in the market for family haulers with three rows of seats. The company unveiled the new version Wednesday night at Ford Field, home of the NFL's Detroit Lions. It comes just before next week's press days at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, where the new SUV will be on display. The Explorer, last reworked for the 2011 model year, gets a top-to-bottom update that includes a switch from front- to rear-wheel-drive, as well as updated engines and transmissions, some nice standard safety features and even high-performance and gas-electric hybrid versions. The switch to rear drive will boost towing capacity and off-road performance, Ford says. Sales of the venerable Explorer had held up well but dropped 3.5 per cent last year to just under 262,000. The SUV's appearance doesn't change much, but the roof line does slope more from front to back. Customers have told engineers that hip space in the front seats seemed cramped, and it was hard to get into the third row of seats. Ford took care of both problems with more interior space and second-row seats that tip and slide forward with the touch of a button. Engineers said that the new version is more efficient because it's 200 pounds lighter than the old model due to more use of aluminum and high-strength steel. The base engine is an updated turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder with 300 horsepower. There's also a 365 horsepower 3-liter turbocharged V6. And for the first time in six years, Ford is offering a gas-electric hybrid SUV with the new Explorer. Standard on all models is Ford's suite of advanced safety features that includes automatic emergency braking, blind spot detectors and lane keeping. The base price will rise $400 from the current $32,365 excluding shipping. Fuel economy wasn't announced. The Chicago-built Explorer goes on sale in the summer. The Explorer is competing against relatively new versions of General Motors' three-row SUVs including the Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave. Cadillac plans to unveil the new XT6 on Sunday. Source : Ap News
FCA US recalling 1.4 million vehicles in US Automotive News reported that FCA US LLC is recalling an estimated 1.4 million vehicles in the US to replace passenger-side air-bag inflators that may, on deployment, send shrapnel into the vehicle cabin. The defect is linked to temperature cycling, humidity and time. This recall is the fourth and final phase of a coordinated schedule established by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and developed to capture defective air-bag inflators produced by the former Takata. To date, FCA US has replaced more than 4 million Takata inflators. However, the Company’s inventory of replacement parts has outpaced demand for service. Mr Mark Chernoby, FCA’s Head of North American Safety and Regulatory Compliance said that “We strongly urge our customers to respond to their recall notices by contacting an authorized Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Ram dealer. Recall service is free, we have replacement parts and dealers are ready to help.” Source : Automotive World
New delivery record for Volkswagen Group in 2018 With 10.83 million vehicles delivered throughout the world, 0.9 percent more than in 2017, the Volkswagen Group set an all-time record. In many markets of the world, South America, Europe, the USA and China, both the deliveries and in some cases the market shares of the Volkswagen Group grew. With successful product offensives, the Group brands were able to more than compensate for the risks in individual regions such as the general economic uncertainty in China and the adverse effects of the WLTP changeover in Europe. Especially the Group’s new SUV models were strong growth drivers. The Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Škoda, Seat, Porsche and Lamborghini brands all set new deliveries records. Dr Christian Dahlheim, Head of Volkswagen Group Sales, said “Even though setting new records is no longer our primary goal, we are very pleased about this great result. Especially in the second half, things were not easy for us in 2018. It was possible to achieve this new deliveries record for the Group thanks to a combination of outstanding products and the high level of trust placed in us by our customers. In view of volatile geopolitical developments, our business will face an equally strong headwind in 2019. In my opinion, the Volkswagen Group is well-positioned to meet the upcoming challenges. We face the future with optimism.” In Europe, the brands of the Volkswagen Group delivered a total of 4.38 million vehicles in 2018, 1.2 percent more than in 2017. The Group grew especially strongly in Central and Eastern Europe, where 797,200 vehicles were handed over to customers, 7.1 percent more than the previous year. This increase was especially due to strong performance in Russia, where Group deliveries grew by 19.8 percent. Despite the significant adverse effects of the WLTP changeover of the fleets in the second half of the year, deliveries by the Group in Western Europereached about the same level as the previous year, at 3.58 million vehicles. In Germany, deliveries also remained at the prior-year level, at 1.28 million vehicles. There was a two-way split between the situation for the brands in the markets of North America. While growth was recorded in the USAwith 638,300 vehicles delivered (+2.1 percent) and Canada with 118,500 vehicles delivered (+3.7 percent), there was a drop of 15.6 percent compared with the previous year in Mexico. In total, the Volkswagen Group handed 956,700 vehicles over to customers in the region, 2.0 percent less than in 2017. Developments for the Volkswagen Group in South America last year were extremely positive. With growth of 13.1 percent in deliveries to 590,000 vehicles, the region made a decisive contribution to the positive overall figures of the Group. The outstanding performance of the Group brands in Brazil, where 401,700 vehicles were delivered, a rise of 30,4 percent, more than offset the fall of 22.4 percent to 118,600 vehicles delivered in Argentina. In Argentina, conditions for the overall market remained difficult in a generally poor economic environment. In the Asia-Pacific region, the Volkswagen Group achieved growth, with 4.55 million vehicles handed over to customers – despite the negative effect of the Chinese market, where the overall economic situation became more sluggish in the second half of the year as a result of the trade dispute with the USA. The reluctance to buy on the part of consumers had a negative impact on the entire automobile market, which contracted for the first time after many years in 2018. In this situation, the Volkswagen Group still achieved slight growth compared with the previous year, at 4.21 million vehicles delivered, and were able to increase its market share. VW and Ford eye van market in Turkey and Poland Automotive News reported that Ford likely will build midsize vans for Volkswagen in Turkey while VW will produce smaller vans in Poland as the two automakers jointly develop commercial vans to tap into a lucrative market that is too small for each automaker to effectively compete in on their own. VW Group CEO Herbert Diess said Ford's factory in Turkey that builds the Transit vans is "an option" for VW's Transporter midsize vans. Such a move would mean VW transferring production of its T6 vans from Hanover, Germany, to Turkey and the next Transporter moving to a Ford platform using Ford engines. VW is in discussions with labor representatives in Hanover about the change, Diess said on Tuesday, as Ford and VW announced details of their partnership. Germany's Handelblatt said VW likely will continue to build T6 passenger vans continue in Hanover while panel vans for businesses would transfer to Turkey. VW needs to free up capacity in Hanover after announcing in November that it will build the I.D. Buzz retro-styled minibus at the factory, with production likely starting in 2022. Ford and VW plan to launch vans in 2023 to replace the current Transit and the Transporter vans. VW will build a new compact van to replace both the VW Caddy and the Transit Connect at VW's plant in Poland, where the automaker produces the Crafter large van, Handelsblatt reported. The new van would use VW engines. Ford will build a midsize pickup to replace the VW Amarok to sold alongside a new Ford Ranger starting in 2022. The models will be sold in Europe, South America and Africa, the companies said. No production location was given. Ford currently builds the European Ranger in South Africa. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles CEO Thomas Sedran said that "clear decisions" on production locations have not yet been made. To be competitive "the more production we have in the low-cost countries the better, and of course Turkey and Poland are both very competitive.” Diess said VW and Ford would see similar savings from the commercial vehicle partnership by helping spread the cost of future technology and also making savings on product development. He said that "It's mitigation against potential cost increases because of the new drivetrains we need for the electrification in this segment and also the CO2 penalties we are facing.” Source : Automotive News
Ford surpasses 1 million truck sale in 2018 Ford extended its market dominance in trucks again in 2018 with more than 1.075 million F-Series sold globally. Using average US transaction pricing of USD 46,700, F-Series estimated sales revenue of USD 50 billion would be greater than the 2018 revenues of Fortune 500 companies including Oracle, American Express or Best Buy Along with increased sales volumes, F-Series average transaction prices have steadily grown since the 2014 debut of the new F-150 with a high-strength, military-grade, aluminum-alloy body, climbing an average of $7,400 per truck. Ford offers an F-Series pickup for every truck customer – from the work-ready F-150 XL starting at an MSRP of $28,155 to the top-of-the-line F-450 Super Duty Limited starting at an MSRP of $86,505. Of course, the resounding success of Ford Motor Company’s F-Series would not be possible without the hardworking employees at Kentucky Truck Plant, Kansas City Assembly Plant, Ohio Assembly Plant and Dearborn Truck Plant, along with those at Ford’s Product Development Center in Dearborn. Ford motor company issues safety recall for Lincoln Nautilus vehicles Ford Motor Company is issuing a safety recall for certain 2019 Lincoln Nautilus vehicles equipped with lane-centering assist and adaptive front steering because these vehicles may not adequately detect if a driver has his or her hands off the steering wheel. If this occurs, the hands on/off detection system may not alert the driver to place his or her hands back on the steering wheel, which could increase the risk of a crash. Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries resulting from this condition. This action affects approximately 2,700 Lincoln Nautilus vehicles in North America, including 2,276 in the United States and federalized territories and 371 in Canada. Affected 2019 Lincoln Nautilus vehicles were built at Oakville Assembly Plant, Sept. 5, 2018 to Nov. 19, 2018. Dealers will update the power steering control module software in affected vehicles. The Ford reference number for this recall is 19S02. Source : Strategic Research Institute
EU passenger car registrations up by 0.1pct in 2018 In December 2018, the EU passenger car market declined for the fourth month in a row. Last month registrations fell by 8.4%, continuing the downward trend that started with the introduction of WLTP in September. With the exception of Italy (+2.0%), all major EU markets saw demand for cars contract during the last month of the year. Overall in 2018, car registrations in the EU remained more or less stable compared to the year before. Due to falling demand during the last four months of 2018, full-year growth was +0.1%. Although this increase is very modest, it still marks the fifth consecutive year of growth, with almost 15.2 million cars registered across the European Union. Source : Strategic Research Institute

Volkswagen to build new generation of electric cars in Chattanooga The Volkswagen brand is forging ahead consistently with its electric offensive and has now announced the first production location in North America. In future, the Chattanooga plant in Tennessee is to produce vehicles based on the modular electric toolkit MEB, a new generation of electric cars. For this purpose, Volkswagen is investing about EUR 700 million (USD 800 million) in the plant. The expansion of the plant will create up to 1,000 new jobs plus additional jobs at suppliers. The first electric car from Chattanooga is to roll off the production line in 2022. Over the next few years, eight MEB plants are to be developed in Europe, North America and China. Volkswagen is building up the production capacity needed to sell more than 1 million electric cars per year by 2025. The first electric car to roll off the production line in Chattanooga will be the ID. CROZZ SUV model. Volkswagen will also offer the ID. BUZZ in North America, the reinterpretation of the legendary VW bus. Both cars are part of Volkswagen’s new ID. family, which will make optimum use of the possibilities of e-mobility. Among other features, the vehicles will offer long ranges, a spacious interior, dynamic driving behavior and a new level of digital connectivity. Dr Herbert Diess, CEO of Volkswagen AG said that “The US is one of the most important locations for us and producing electric cars in Chattanooga is a key part of our growth strategy in North America. The management team lead by Scott Keogh is committed to continuing to increase our market share in the coming years. Together with our ongoing investments and this increase in local production, we are strengthening the foundation for sustainable growth of the Volkswagen brand in the US.” Source : Strategic Research Institute
Ferrari chairman reiterates support for CEO Mr Camilleri Automotive News reported that Ferrari Chairman Mr John Elkann reiterated his support for Ferrari CEO Louis Camilleri, denying speculation a top management purge could be on the cards. Elkann, a scion of Italy's Agnelli family, said in a letter published that "I deny all rumors about both a possible return to the past and changes in our structure.” He said that "My commitment to ensuring stability and concentration at Ferrari is total as is that of CEO Louis Camilleri.” The sudden death in July last year of chairman and CEO Sergio Marchionne triggered a change at the top of the supercar maker with Camilleri taking over as chief executive and Elkann as chairman. In September Camilleri described as "aspirational" targets set by Marchionne. After the replacement this month of Maurizio Arrivabene by Mattia Binotto as Formula One principal, media speculation grew over a possible broader management shakeup. Mr Elkann said that "The appointment of Mattia Binotto... does not represent any overhaul adding the company had picked the new principal in common agreement with Arrivabene.” Source : Automotive News
Audi plans Q3 sized electric crossover Automotive News reported that Audi plans to introduce a full-electric crossover about the size of its compact Q3 SUV as the premium brand fills out its lineup of electric vehicles in a bid to take on established makers of EVs such as Tesla, according to people familiar with the matter. The car will be built at VW's Zwickau factory in Germany and share technology with its sister brand to save cost, said the people, who asked not to be identified as the plan is not public. It would complement three different versions of Audi's first all-electric model, the e-tron, which was unveiled in California last year, as well as a battery-powered variant of the Q2 SUV designed for the Chinese market, the people said. Audi plans to launch seven hybrid cars and five battery vehicles by the end of next year, an Audi spokesman said. He declined to elaborate on specific models. The Zwickau factory, about an hour's drive from the eastern German city of Leipzig, is central to VW’s electrification push. VW is investing 1.2 billion euros (USD 1.4 billion) in the plant, which now builds Golf hatchbacks, so it can produce as many as 330,000 EVs a year for the VW, Audi and Seat brands. VW will start building the Golf-sized I.D. hatchback at the plant later this year for market launch in 2020. The automaker has announced plans to start making six electric models in Zwickau by 2021, including the I.D. Crozz compact crossover. The company has said it plans two Audi models at Zwickau, without identifying those projects. The cars will be based on VW's new MEB electric platform. Audi, Volkswagen Group's biggest profit contributor that has trailed behind rivals Mercedes-Benz and BMW in recent years, has been overhauling its lineup to narrow the gap in sales volumes and margins. Ford forecasts USD 112 million Q4 loss Economic Times reported that Ford expected to post a USD 112 million loss in the fourth quarter of 2018 as the automaker implements a massive restructuring in the United States and Europe. The second biggest US automaker said it would still post a profit after charges stemming from the drive to cut USD 11 billion in costs. The firm sees adjusted profit of 30 cents a share during this period, according to the statement, less than the 32 cents anticipated by the markets. For the full year, Ford will post a net profit of USD 3.7 billion, less than half the 2017 result. Adjusted earnings per share are expected to be USD 1.30 across the year, right at the lower end of its USD 1.30-1.50 estimate in October. Ford CEO Jim Hackett said in a statement that "Over the last 19 months, we have worked to reshape and transform our company -- sharpening our competitiveness, taking actions to improve our profitability and returns, and investing in our future.” Ford last year announced it would halt production of almost all sedans and small cars in the United States to save USD 11 billion, and last week announced a massive restructuring of its European operations to boost profitability, including thousands of potential job cuts. It might also scrap the Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo models in Europe, where they are popular. Mr Jim Farley, Ford's president of Global Markets, said that "We are now beginning to see the results of our capital shift away from traditional sedans to trucks and SUVs with new utility nameplates globally." Renault is considering new governance – Report Reuters reported that Renault confirmed that it was considering new leadership to replace embattled Chairman and CEO Mr Carlos Ghosn, after French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire called publicly for a board meeting to address his succession. Renault said in a statement issued in the name of acting chairman Philippe Lagayette and another senior director that "The governing bodies of Renault are actively working to find the best solution for the future governance of the group, with a view to preserving the company's interests and strengthening the Renault-Nissan Alliance.” The statement came a day after Le Maire called for a change of Renault's leadership, in the wake of a Tokyo court's refusal to release Ghosn on bail as he awaits trial in Japan on financial misconduct charges that he denies. Ford says no deal Brexit would be catastrophic Automotive News reported that Britain's biggest automaker, Jaguar Land Rover, urged Britiish lawmakers to rule out the possibility that the UK leaves the European Union without a trade deal while Ford Motor said a no-deal Brexit would be catastrophic. JLR said it regretted a parliamentary vote when lawmakers rejected by a huge margin Prime Minister Theresa May's deal for leaving the bloc. It said "We are disappointed with the vote on the Brexit deal and are considering its implications. We would now urge ruling out a no-deal immediately as the only option with majority support in parliament." Ford Chief Financial Officer Bob Shanks, said that "Ford continues to view a no-deal exit as the least likely outcome given how damaging it will be. Such a situation would be catastrophic for the UK industry and for Ford’s operations in the country." Vauxhall said it was "extremely disappointing" that the threat of a no-deal Brexit had not been removed. Vauxhall’s French owners, PSA Group, has been weighing whether to close one of its two factories in the UK. Honda said a hard Brexit would seriously impact its European operations, even though it is implementing countermeasures. New checks at the border could disrupt its logistics systems, while tariffs on goods moving between the EU and UK would hurt its competitiveness, it said. Toyota has said it would temporarily halt its production in the UK if Britain leaves the EU without a trade agreement, disrupting weekly revenue of 60 million pounds (USD 77 million) generated there, the company’s Europe President, Johan van Zyl, said in October. BMW, which owns two iconic English brands Rolls-Royce and Mini said the uncertainty of UK and EU trade relations are “greater than ever” and that it has to prepare for the worst. Volkswagen, which has boosted inventory levels in its second-biggest market in Europe, said open-market access and clear customs processes were paramount to the industry. "Any further delay in the Brexit decision-making process poses a risk to investments and jobs in the automotive industry which relies on long-term planning security with development cycles of up to five years," it said in a statement. Fiat Chrysler production to fall in Italy in 2019 – Union Auto News reported that unions at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' Italian factories expect domestic production to continue to decline this year after double-digit drop last year, largely because of slumping sales at Alfa Romeo and Maserati. FCA's production in Italy fell 10 percent to 667,526 units in 2018, according to the FIM-CISL Italian trade union. The decline came after sales of Alfa Romeo and Maserati models dropped in Europe and the US, especially in the second half. Production at the FCA's Italian plants will fall further in 2019 for various reasons, said Ferdinando Uliano, head of FIM-CISL Automotive. He cited the economic situation in Italy, the lack of new models and the discontinuation in the summer of the Fiat Punto and Alfa Romeo Mito small hatchbacks, which combined accounted for 38,000 units produced in 2018. Production of the Maserati Levante midsize SUV, Alfa Romeo Giulia midsize sedan and Alfa's Stelvio midsize SUV fell most in 2018, the union said. Source : Auto News
Groupe PSA starts production of the Turbo PureTech Three-cylinder petrol engine at the Tychy plant Groupe PSA inaugurated the new assembly line for the Turbo PureTech 3-cylinder petrol engine in Tychy at a ceremony attended by Jadwiga Emilewicz, Poland’s Minister of Entrepreneurship and Technology, Carlos Tavares, Chairman of the Managing Board of Groupe PSA, local authorities, the plant’s management and all its employees. With this new assembly line, the EB Turbo PureTech petrol engine awarded International Engine of the Year four times in a row is gradually becoming a global-scale engine for Groupe PSA. The EB Engine (Atmo and Turbo) is currently produced in France (Douvrin, Tremery) and China (Xiangyang) and, from 2019 onwards, will be produced in Hungary (Szentgotthard), Morocco (Kenitra), and from 2020 in India (Hosur). 3.8 million EB engines have been produced to date and this additional capacity corresponds to increasing market demand, supported in particular by production of new Opel/Vauxhall models on Groupe PSA platforms and technology. This highly efficient engine contributes to the reduction of the CO2 emission with an average fuel consumption reduced by 4% compared to the previous generation. The powertrain plant in Tychy was modernized to boost its performance in line with Groupe PSA standards: New technologies and equipment, supported by new IT systems, ensure a high quality of production with appropriate trainings provided to production teams. Performance of our industrial organisation is also enhanced, by locating component plants close to vehicle factories. Source : Strategic Research Institute
Hyundai, Kia issue new U.S. recall of 168,000 vehicles for fire risks Reuters reported that Hyundai Motor Co and affiliate Kia Motors Corp will recall about 168,000 US vehicles at risk of fuel leaks, after recalling them in 2017 for engine fire risks, and will offer software upgrades for 3.7 million vehicles. A high-pressure fuel pipe may have been damaged or improperly installed as part of an engine replacement during the prior recall, and that installation could increase the risk of fire, the Hyundai, Kia issue new U.S. recall of 168,000 vehicles for fire risks companies said. The Korean automakers said the software update aims to protect the vehicles from internal damage, and they will also offer new extended warranties for engine issues. The "knock sensor" software detects vibrations indicating the onset of excessive wear on the connecting rod bearing. Kia said that 20 percent of the vehicles involved have already received the update. The new recall covers 68,000 various Kia Optima, Sorento and Sportage vehicles from the 2011 through 2014 model years, while Hyundai said it affects 100,000 2011-2014 Hyundai Sonata and 2013-2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport vehicles. Kia said six fires are linked to the new recall but no reports of injuries, while Hyundai said it had no reports of fires linked to the new recall. Source : Reuters
