(anp/lpb)

Share market tipped to open stronger News.com.au: THE share market is expected to open a little stronger tomorrow, with resource stocks rising and investors digesting news from the G20 meeting in Canada. Australian Stock Report head of research Geoff Saffer said the local market should open a little up with rises in metals and energy prices in offshore trading on Friday. "Oil was up around 3 per cent and should see our major energy shares performing strongly, especially precious metals," Mr Saffer said. "Gold was back around record highs, so gold shares should see some buying after a little bit of profit taking last week," he said. On Friday, US share closed mixed after details of a major financial reform bill were announced. The Dow Jones Industrial Average went down 8.99 points, or 0.09 per cent, to 10,143.81, while the broader S&P 500 index advanced 2.90 points, or 0.27 per cent, to 1076.59. Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar. End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar. The tech-rich Nasdaq index gained 6.06 points, or 0.27 per cent, at 2223.48. Tomorrow, investors will also be watching announcements from the leaders of the Group of 20 developed and emerging nations who have met in Canada, Mr Saffer said. "Any plans to tighten financial regulation or increase capital requirements will hurt our banking sector," he said. During the week, key events that will feature on the finance calendar include the release of the Housing Industry Association national outlook for new home sales in the March quarter. Companies including Ramelius Resources Ltd, Xanadu Resources Ltd and Catalyst Metals Ltd are due to hold annual general meetings. The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations survey of skilled job vacancies is due to be released on Wednesday. "The Australian dollar rose a touch, so you could see some of the stocks with overseas earnings suffer a little bit," Mr Saffer said. bit.ly/askA6h

Brussels blog: Euro’s weakness is a mixed blessing for the eurozone The euro has fallen by almost 20 per cent against the dollar since last November, and the general view in Europe is that this is good news – indeed, one of the few pieces of good economic news to have come Europe’s way recently, writes the FT’s Tony Barber. Unfortunately, the real world is not as simple as that.blogs.ft.com/brusselsblog/2010/06/eur...

Banks borrow less from ECB than expected Wednesday, 30 June 2010 14:01 Banks borrowed less than expected from the European Central Bank in a key funding operation in the last three months. The news eases fears about banks' ability to cope with the repayment of close to half a trillion euros tomorrow. The ECB said 171 banks borrowed €131.9bn over three months at a flat rate of 1% - less than the €210bn expected. Advertisement Today's operation is the biggest amount ever borrowed in a funding operation of this kind - but less money was borrowed from the European Central Bank than expected by analysts. Markets have regained some composure on the news and the euro has strengthened. However, tomorrow will be the big test when 1,100 banks will have to repay €442bn. At the heart of the issue is the ability of the ECB to wean banks off emergency supports introduced at the height of the financial crisis. The banks with the biggest dependence on ECB funding are Irish.
