We Are in Equivalent of Great Depression: Strategist The mid-summer rally is over and stocks will begin a downward leg before bottoming in October, as the world economy is in what looks like a Great Depression, Robin Griffiths, a technical strategist at Cazenove Capital, told CNBC Monday. www.cnbc.com/id/38620283

FHA Insured Mortgages: A Disaster In The Making I pointed out that there were two main props supporting the housing market now. We examined the first one in detail - the banks withholding most foreclosed homes from the market. The second prop is even more important -- the soaring percentage of home mortgages that are insured by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). Let's take an in-depth look at the FHA.

The $2.5 trillion slush fund Bottom line: The program is running a deficit this year, and is projected to run growing deficits after 2015. But it will have money in the trust funds to pay full benefits until 2037. Some maintain that the findings reinforce the claims that Social Security is basically on sound footing -- no need to rush to make changes and nothing a few minor tweaks won't fix. Others say the need to make changes has grown even larger.money.cnn.com/2010/08/09/news/economy...
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Freddie Mac said it will tap the Treasury Department for $1.8 billion of government support after the mortgage giant lost $6 billion during the second quarter. (FMCC 0.41, -0.02, -3.44%) reported a net loss of $4.71 billion in the latest quarter, versus net income of $302 million in year earlier, the company added. We moeten daar zeer voorzichtig mee omspringen.

Aug. 10, 2010, 6:23 a.m. EDT Shanghai sets bearish tone on domestic growth worries By V. Phani Kumar and Shri Navaratnam HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Chinese shares suffered their worst fall in more than a month Tuesday, dragging down markets across Asia, as weaker-than-expected imports in July fueled worries that consumption on the mainland was slowing. "What we are seeing is some knee-jerk reaction to this imports data ... It's being interpreted as disappointing and being a precursor to poor consumption on the mainland," said Ben Collett, head of equities at Louis Capital Markets in Hong Kong. The Shanghai Composite dropped 2.9% to end at 2,595.27, taking its worst percentage fall since June 29, while the Shenzhen Composite index tumbled 3.3% to 1,085.63. Hong Kong shares also responded in kind to the sharp fall, with the Hang Seng Index finishing 1.5% lower for just its second loss in 16 trading days. Will the autumn bring a market fall? Japan's Nikkei Stock Average dropped 0.2%, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gave up 1.2%, South Korea's Kospi lost 0.5% and Taiwan's Taiex shed 0.7%, with India's Sensex declining 0.4% in afternoon trade. Dow Jones Industrial Average (DOW:DJIA) futures dropped 63 points in screen trade. Traders said the weak July import numbers dealt a blow to investor confidence as soft Chinese demand for inbound goods and services could have negative implications for the global recovery. China's exports grew 38.1% in July from a year earlier, from June's 43.9% rise, and imports rose 22.7%, slowing off from June's 34.1% increase. While imports rose for the ninth consecutive month, the increase was below the 30.2% median increase forecast by economists. Read full story on the Chinese data. Real estate, brokerage and consumer stocks paced the decline, with Beijing Vantone Real Estate Co. (SHANGHAI:CN:600246) falling 7.1%, Bright Dairy & Food Co. (SHANGHAI:CN:600597) shedding 4.9% and Southwest Securities Co. (SHANGHAI:CN:600369) sliding 6.9%. Investors were also cautious ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve's rate-setting meeting due later in the global day and sold down other risky assets, sending the U.S. dollar higher against most currencies other than the Japanese yen. The greenback's rise, in turn, weighed on commodities priced in dollars and pulled regional resource shares lower. Read full story on what to expect from the Fed meeting. Among the resource sector, BHP Billiton (NYSE:BHP) (AUSTRALIAN:AU:BHP) dropped 2% and Woodside Petroleum (AUSTRALIAN:AU:WPL) (PINK:WOPEY) dropped 2.3% in Sydney. PetroChina Co. (NYSE:PTR) (THE:HK:857) and Aluminum Corp. of China (THE:HK:2600) (NYSE:ACH) lost 2.4% in Hong Kong and Sterlite Industries (NYSE:SLT) shed 1.5% in Mumbai trade. Spot gold was at $1,197.30 per troy ounce, down $3.90 from late New York on Monday. September Nymex crude-oil futures were down 76 cents at $80.72 per barrel on Globex. Japanese stocks retreated in line with weak Chinese markets and regional peers, as investors reacted calmly to the Bank of Japan's decision to keep its overnight call rate unchanged at 0.1%, as expected. Exporters were broadly lower, with Sony Corp. (NYSE:SNE) (TOKYO:JP:6758) sliding 0.7% and Nissan Motor Co. (PINK:NSANY) (TOKYO:JP:7201) dropping 0.5%. Shares of Disco (TOKYO:JP:6146) jumped 5.6% after the company posted strong first-quarter profits and raised its full-year earnings and dividend forecasts, citing a recovery in the semiconductor industry and demand for consumer electronics products. Mitsubishi Materials (TOKYO:JP:5711) climbed 5.1% after a solid first-quarter earnings report. In Hong Kong, shares of online business-to-business platform operator Alibaba.com Ltd., (THE:HK:1688) rose 0.3% ahead of its quarterly results announcement. After the close the company reported net profit of 363 million yuan ($53.6 million), an increase of 45% from the year earlier CNY249.2 million, helped by growth in its registered user base and income from new services. Elsewhere, New Zealand's NZX 50 ended 0.3% lower and Philippine stocks rose 0.3%. By late afternoon, Singapore's Straits Times Index shed 0.3%, Indonesian shares gave up 1% and Thailand's SET Index lost 1.3%. In foreign-exchange markets, the yen rose against the euro and the dollar after the Bank of Japan kept its policy rate steady and as investors awaited the outcome of the Fed meeting. The euro was fetching ¥112.99 from ¥113.57 in New York on Monday, and $1.3181 from $1.3225. The dollar was buying ¥85.73, compared with ¥85.84. Japanese government bond futures were range-bound as traders were cautious ahead of the Fed outcome. The lead September contract fell 0.20 to 141.93 points, while the 10-year cash JGB was up two basis points at 1.035%
