ODA appoints Logica to track Olympic park vehicles
    20 October 2008

The Olympic Delivery Authority has awarded a contract for monitoring and tracking logistical vehicles travelling to and within the Olympic Park to Logica.

The Delivery Management System Vehicle Tracking Module will be crucial in improving security for construction deliveries and reducing congestion in and around Stratford, Hackney and Leyton by tracking and regulating vehicles travelling to and within the Olympic Park.

The new system will also collate information, and allow the ODA to forecast future demand.

ODA Director of Construction Howard Shiplee said: "This new contract with Logica will provide us with the ability to manage road deliveries using intelligent transport systems, and collate that information to forecast demand.

"This means that lorries should not be blocking the way for other road users because we are reducing the likelihood of waiting to get into the Olympic Park, and a smooth journey will mean less exhaust fumes."

The DMS VTM will be operational by the end of 2008 and the contract will last till June 2011.

Life and pensions industry must invest more in security warns Logica

    17 November 2008

    • Only 7 per cent of IT spending dedicated to data security
    • Few measurement and accrediation processes in place
    • Security should be viewed as a business enabler

The life and pensions industry must commit to greater investment in data security programmes to protect its reputation and increase market share, analysis of an in-depth industry survey by IT and business services company Logica reveals.

The resulting white paper Information Security in the UK life, savings & investment and pension sector shows that while the industry has recognised the lessons of recent data security breaches, the industry still spends little on data security. It dedicates an average of only seven per cent of its IT budget to the issue – compared to the banking industry’s 20 per cent spend.

The survey represents the views of a third of the major players in the UK life, savings & investment and pensions sector, including Friends Provident, Standard Life and Liverpool Victoria.

The majority of those interviewed do not view security as a board issue, with no formal measurement procedures or formal governance structures in place. Of those surveyed, no organisation has a set of formal accreditation, such as ISO 27001 or similar.

Andrew Lloyd, Director of Strategic Solutions in the Financial Services division at Logica in the UK, says: “While the survey shows that the industry is taking the issue of data security seriously, this is not being translated into concrete actions. Security is a boardroom issue and customers are increasingly demanding greater levels of accountability. Investment in data security must increase very substantially in order to mitigate against the loss of market share and loss of reputation.

“Given the global financial crisis, the issue of information security is increasingly urgent. The industry must instill a sense of consumer trust in a time of uncertainty, as many customers fear their savings and pensions are unsafe. The credit crunch might also lead to an increase in on-line fraud, making the case for increased investment and accountability for security even more important.”

The research shows a positive correlation between increased data security spending and return on investment (ROI), encouraging the industry to view security as business enabler rather than a necessary drain on resources. If the life and pensions sector did actively seek more budget to spend on security, it would be more likely to assess ROI associated with its expenditure on security formally. Currently, most of the participants interviewed said they have no mechanism in place for judging a security ROI.

According to the survey the priority security areas to be addressed include identity theft, third parties and physical security. When it comes to security concerns, the security of home PCs, laptops and PDAs, keeping security simple and call centre confidence tricks are mentioned frequently by respondents. Those surveyed widely agreed on the need for two-factor authentication (2FA), with some companies seriously considering upgrading their authentication facilities, with others pushing for first-time installation of 2FA technology.

Andrew Lloyd adds: “By implementing simple and cost-effective techniques, security risks can not only be dramatically reduced but, equally important, market share and revenues can increase. For example, digital signatures are now widely used in the banking industry, eliminating the need for physical signatures, while at the same time speeding up the sales process. Companies should also be cleaning their databases frequently, ensuring that former staff and third parties are no longer live on the system.

“Implementing security solutions can certainly give a company a competitive advantage by helping to avoid barriers to access, reducing costs, enhancing its reputation – and preventing data leaks.”

    British presence in Philippine market

SURVEYING the scene in the drawing room of his elegant Forbes Park residence, British Ambassador Peter Beckingham was proud to pick out the presence of three chief executives from three British corporate entities—namely banking giant HSBC, IT market topnotcher Logica and leading engineering firm Atkins—and pointing out their companies as good examples of British input towards creating jobs in the Philippines.

The occasion itself celebrated the British founded Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) making its presence felt in the Philippines in response to the increasing demand for international finance professionals throughout the region.

As part of its activities planned in the Philippines, the Management Accountants Institute cocktail reception held at the ambassadorial residence marked the unveiling of CIMA’s international brand logo by Ambassador Beckingham.

Another highlight was the signing of the memorandum of understanding between Management Accountants Institute and the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (Picpa). The memorandum marks a milestone for both Management Accountants Institute and Picpa in the desire to promote management accountancy to Picpa members and the public.

With the signing of the memorandum, Management Accountants Institute and Picpa have agreed to collaborate on various areas that would contribute to further the science of management accountancy in the Philippines, particularly CIMA Learning Partner accreditation that serves as a quality assurance for institutions teaching CIMA.

Being a Management Accountants Institute Learning Partner enables Picpa to offer the Management Accountants Institute Professional Qualification as a program for Picpa members or other interested individuals. As valued partners, Management Accountants Institute and Picpa will endeavor to share and exchange resources to achieve the objectives and missions that are mutually beneficial to both parties.

As a leading global professional institute, Management Accountants Institute offers an internationally recognized qualification in management accountancy. With 23 percent membership growth over the last five years, Management Accountants Institute has professional qualifications that are highly relevant to today’s ever changing business world.

The Management Accountants Institute qualifications equip its members to work anywhere in the world. It is the only international professional qualification with a syllabus that has a sole focus on the education and training of accountants in business.

Globally, 52 percent of CIMA members are employed by organizations with an annual turnover of £50 million or more and 98 percent of members work in business.

Rick Sturge, Management Accountants Institute ‘s Director of Employer and Strategic Development commented: “CIMA is excited to be making its presence in the Philippines in response to the needs of not only the employers, members and students locally but also to the wide ranging reforms in the tertiary education to be undertaken by the Philippine Commission of Higher Education (CHED) by 2009 to 2010.

“CIMA lauds CHED in its determination to upgrade the Philippines’ tertiary education to be on par with not only its neighboring countries but also with the rest of the world.”

Among various educational developments being proposed is reserving some courses at tertiary level for those with a master’s degree. The UK government agency awards CIMA qualification as equivalent to a master’s degree.

Noted Sturge: “This undertaking in the Philippines, which took two years to reach, marks a milestone that creates strategically a very important market for CIMA. It is opportune that CIMA and Picpa signed the MoU in conjunction with the CHED’s announcement that it will be supporting centers of excellence, and that incentives will be provided to accredited programs.”

He added: “Being a qualification with uniform requirements wherever it is taken, CIMA acts as a gold standard, and this gives employers a quality guarantee when recruiting finance professionals throughout the world.”

Two other British—though with Dutch collaboration in both cases—companies, Unilever (whose founder Lord Lever was interestingly also a founding member of CIMA) and Shell also used the occasion to sign on to the Management Accountants Institute standard for its local accounting staff.

Logica is now ISO certified for Information Security ISO 27001

Logica Philippines, an IT and business services company, recently joined the ranks of other companies to receive an ISO certification from TUV Rheinland Philippines.

The Information Security Management System (ISO 27001:2005) was fully implemented company-wide over a short period of only 6 months.

Beginning with a Risk Assessment of Logica’s operations to ensure that all organizational assets were identified, security measures were put in place to identify any threats and vulnerabilities within Logica’s system. Security Measures were then implemented to eliminate such risks, resulting in a full-proof, fail-safe operation.

"This is the first step in our quality journey and a very significant milestone. We are pleased to have achieved ISO certification in such a short span of time. Securing that certification will mean that Logica will be able to better serve the needs of our local and international clientele," said Neil Elias, country director of Logica Philippines.

Logica Philippines began operations back in March of 2007 with a small number of staff supporting the human resource management (HRM) requirements for Logica in the United Kingdom.

Since then, the company has tripled its workforce. From its initial offering of HRM services, the company has diversified and increased its capabilities in Application Management (AM) and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO).

In the field of Systems Integration/Application Management the company’s particular areas of expertise include SAP Services, Enterprise Content Management, and Web Based Technologies. Whereas its expertise in Business Process Outsourcing include Data Transformation, Financial Back Office, and Human Resource Management. Logica Philippines serves clients in the United Kingdom, United States of America and the Netherlands. Its rapid growth and diverse services have gained recognition in the Philippines where the company won the "Best New BPO Locator of the Year" award in the 2008 Philippines ICT award event.

IT execs say learned the lessons of dot.com crash

BARCELONA, Nov 21 (Reuters) - Technology executives told a conference this week they learned lessons in the dot.com crash that wiped $5 trillion off tech stocks at the start of the century that would help them through current difficulties. Queuing up to make investment cases for their companies, executives said the experience had left them in better shape to survive a coming recession than other sectors that had not suffered in a similar way.

"We had a telecoms crisis in 2001, and I think a couple of learnings that we had at Ericsson are important and valid to keep in mind," Chief Financial Officer Hans Vestberg told Morgan Stanley's Technology, Media and Telecoms
conference. "Focus on cost, regardless of what's happening ... That we learned from 2001, and we keep that in our minds," he said. "You saw that in the last 12 months we have been very focused on cash generation ... That, we will continue."

The themes of generating cash, cutting costs, diversifying customer bases and increasing the proportion of recurring revenues were echoed by companies in businesses ranging from software to telecoms to IT services.

Leo Apotheker, co-chief executive of business software giant SAP pointed to the company's 40 percent of sales that come from steady sources such asmaintenance and services today -- double the proportion it had in 1998.SAP finally showed the scars of global economic pressure in the third
quarter, warning last week that sales had fallen off dramatically in the last two weeks of September.UK-based Autonomy, whose software helps companies comply with financial regulations, also raised its recurring revenues to 50 percent of sales from 25 percent in 2002.

But by the time Ericsson's presentation came on day two, some investors had heard enough of the same old story."Most companies looking to the next 12-18 months are going to be focused on costs, and they're going to be focused on cash," said one.
"So are there any specific other examples you would give about your lessons from last time that would make you much better positioned?"

Autonomy, whose meaning-based search software helps companies mine documents sometimes stored in multiple formats and thousands of different
depositories, said it was positively profiting from the global economic crisis."Financial services turmoil is very good for us. Financial services customers are having to buy a lot of software to become compliant,"

Chief Executive Mike Lynch said. "We're not seeing the kind of effects that SAP reported in the quarter." Among telecoms companies, both smaller players like Sweden's Tele2 and giants like Telefonica said they would emerge winners.
"When you're thinking of reducing your phone bill, we're supposed to be the first place to come to. We're lowest priced," said Tele2 Chief Executive
Harri Koponen. Telefonica Chief Financial Officer Santiago Fernandez Valbuena argued incumbents and market leaders would turn out to be winners in times of trouble by being more flexible on costs and capital spending.

    INFORMATION AGE RECESSION

Andy Green, CEO of British IT services company Logica , also argued that size mattered, but precisely because this recession would be nothing like that of 2002."Fundamentally there was something very different about the 2002/03 recession to all the others, and that was that it was a tech-led recession," he said. "We were all sitting in our boardrooms and thinking: 'Bloody hell, this dot.com, ecommerce stuff, which we all understood nothing about ... and thinking, 'Can we afford not to?', and we were spending money." "And there were certainly enough people in every boardroom who thought it was a bunch of tosh. As soon as things blew up, people went for the hatchet and really cut back very hard." Today, customers of IT firms know better what they want."Being a small niche player with great ideas was a super business in 2002. In today's market ... larger players like ourselves are definitely favoured," he argued, adding that scale for global procurement and recruitment was also crucial.

Today's faster communications might, however, spell a swifter end when the end comes, he said, as the world acts in a more coordinated way. "This is the first global recession of the information age," Green said. "That means you're probably going to go steeply in and hopefully steeply out."
