Western Uranium moves to focus on high grade manganese

    Tuesday , 09 Feb 2010
Perth-based Western Uranium (ASX: WTN), to be renamed Groote Resources Limited will have a busy manganese exploration program at its Groote Eylandt Manganese Project in the Northern Territory.

Perhaps not lost on all investors to date, Western Uranium owns a large tenement portfolio prospective for manganese adjacent to the world's third largest managanese producer and one of the world's largest high grade manganese deposits.

Western Uranium has six tenement applications including 1,722km², 57km² onshore including Winchelsea Island and 1,665km² offshore. The tenements are directly adjacent to BHP Billiton and Anglo American Corp's, Groote Eylandt Mining Company (known as GEMCO) world class manganese mine.

American Manganese Reports on the First Five Drill Holes
VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - April 14, 2010) - Larry W. Reaugh, President and Chief Executive Officer of American Manganese Inc. (TSX VENTURE:AMY)(PINK SHEETS:AMYZF) ("American Manganese" or the "Company") is pleased to report the Company has received results from the first five (5) drill holes.

The mineralization at Artillery Peak Mohave County, Arizona takes the form of paleo-alluvial fans spreading out down slope from a number of source vents. The source vent and the down slope fan at the MacGregor Open Pit area is the first of several targets to be defined by the present drilling program. Early work in the 1940's located most of these fans but little was done to define and measure this mineralization. The definition and evaluation of these various fans is the object of the present drilling program.

MANGANESE is vital to steel making - and there is no substitute.

But the market looks to be a state of uncertainty at present with reports that a number of producers have reduced their prices into China for March delivery, such is the competition in that market.

At the same time, Ivory Coast production fell by more than half in December compared to the preceding month due to the political troubles there.

On the supply side, too, there are commentaries arguing that South Africa could become a much bigger player once it gets its infrastructure ducks in a row.

So here's a quick update on the manganese scene.

Today we've heard that Groote Resources (GOT) is beginning talks with traditional owners involved with the company's Groote Eylandt manganese project. GOT is also relocating its head office to Darwin.

Other developments in recent days include Alloy Resources (AYR) saying it had identified additional manganese drill targets at is project near Cootamundra, NSW. Montezuma Mining (MZM) says test work at its Coodamudgi deposit has produced economic manganese grades, while Azure Mining (AZS) has started drilling at the San Francisco manganese project in Mexico.

Hartley's last week put out a report on Shaw River Resources (SRR) after a visit to the company's new Otjozondu manganese deposit in Namibia. SRR plans to be in production within 18 months. Hartley's notes the long life and high grade potential of the project with numerous historic workings and manganese outcrops over a large area.

BHP Billiton said today it will expand its Gemco manganese project in Australia, raising the capacity of the world's largest producer of the ore to 4.8 million tonnes a year.

The expansion will cost $US279 million ($254m), with BHP providing its 60 per cent share of $US167m, and be completed by late 2013, the company said.

Anglo American owns the remaining 40 per cent stake.

Road and port capacity at the project, on the island of Groote Eylandt in Gulf of Carpentaria, will be raised to 5.9 million tonnes a year to permit further expansions, BHP said.

Gemco accounts for more than 15 per cent of the world's high-grade production of manganese, an important alloy in steelmaking where it is used to make the metal easier to work.

It is also used in the aluminium industry to improve the element's corrosion resistance.

Consolidated Minerals Ltd., owned by Ukrainian billionaire Gennadiy Bogolyubov, is benefiting from “strong” Chinese demand for manganese, used to harden steel.

“I’m a big believer in the steel industry,” Bogolyubov said today in an interview in Sydney after visiting the company’s mining operations in Western Australia. “As long as they produce steel, there will be demand for manganese, and we feel strong demand. We have issues with the price sometimes, but not with demand. We can sell everything that we have.”

Bogolyubov, who already owns iron, coal, oil, gas and steel businesses, took control of Consolidated in January 2008 with a A$1.3 billion ($1.3 billion) acquisition. The company is targeting manganese output of 1.5 million metric tons this year at its Woodie Woodie mine in Australia, the billionaire said.

Bogolyubov said he doesn’t “see this as the right time” for an initial public offering of Consolidated shares in Australia or the U.K. The company was studying a potential listing in London or Sydney, Glenn Baldwin, chief executive officer of the St. Helier, Jersey-based company, said in June.

Consolidated would consider selling its stake in manganese producer OM Holdings Ltd. (OMH) if that company’s management fails to improve “corporate governance,” Bogolyubov said.

“If things don’t change, we’ll think about it,” he said. “It’s possible.”

Consolidated, which owns manganese mines in Ghana and Australia, is the largest shareholder of OM with an 11.35 percent stake. Consolidated in July cited “poor corporate governance” and “ineffective leadership” that led to a loss of about $130 million in the value of the shares since March.

Consolidated doesn’t plan to take over OM, whose shares have slumped 52 percent in Sydney trading this year, Bogolyubov said.

Ondertussen is duidelijk dat manganese onontbeerlijk is om een batterij te kunnen bouwen, naast hun plaats in de staalindustrie. Ik zie vooral kansen voor:
    - Giyani Metals: enorm project.
