Big picture takeouts from Russia’s war on Ukraine First, whereas on February 24, and the days immediately after, there was real doubt about whether Ukraine would exist as a sovereign and independent state, I think it is clear now that Ukraine will exist and will likely prosper once the war ends. The concern back on February 24 was that either Russia would take Kyiv and the bulk of the country and run it as a proxy state, even incorporate it or annex it to Russia. But what we now know is that the Russian greater ambition failed with its devastating defeat in the battle for Kyiv. Russia tried and failed to take the whole of the country and the Kremlin has now had to fall back on the lesser ambitions to take the whole of Donbas, the land corridor to Crimea, and to force Ukraine and the world to accept the annexation of Crimea. But even these latter ambitions now appear overly ambitious, as Ukraine fights on, and even takes the war to Russia, with fresh offensives planned in Kherson, and attacks on Russian-occupied Crimea. The question is can Russia even hang on to what it has got? Indeed, Russia looks to be at its maximum reach in Ukraine, holding just less than 20% of Ukrainian territory, but that means Ukraine holds sway over the vast majority of the country and its people. All the main population centers, aside from Kherson, remain in Ukrainian hands, and Ukraine still has access to the sea through Odesa, which will be critical for the recovery and development of the Ukrainian economy. Now in terms of the outlook for Ukraine, once peace comes, I see new positives. a) The country is united now more than ever before - opinion polls show more than 90% of the population is against making territorial concessions to Moscow. And by Putin’s sheer brutality, bombing civilian targets indiscriminately even in the East, regions historically more favorably inclined towards Russia, he has destroyed any remaining pro-Russian sentiment in Ukraine. The country is now united as I have never seen it, in my 30-odd years covering the country, in its determination to move West and push out of Russia’s grasp, permanently. b) The incredible innovation and motivation used by Ukrainians in this war in a truly David versus Goliath battle suggest that the outlook is positive if this same energy can be diverted to reconstruction and development once peace comes. This bravery and resolve have been a hugely positive advert for Ukraine and one hopes that international business will reward Ukraine with huge investment flows once peace is secured. I would describe points a) and b) above as Ukraine’s “State of Israel” moment, the point at which the country faced annihilation, with backs to the wall but had no choice but to fight. The country came together and pushed back Russia, against overwhelming odds, and I think we will see the same unity and resolve in the reconstruction. I think this will prove to be a real turning point for the country in its post-independence journey. In any other country, one would have expected everything to stop working and institutional collapse. This has not happened, and this bodes well for peace. c) Ukrainians’ bravery has embarrassed the West and forced it to provide financing and military support, at levels unimaginable before the conflict. Better late but never. But given the realization that Russia and Putin are a clear and present danger to the West, there is an understanding now in the West that we must help Ukraine win this war but also win the peace. Russia accuses Ukraine of ‘chemical terrorism’ using toxin Kyiv dismisses the allegations of poisoning Russian soldiers with botulinum toxin and says invading troops likely ate expired canned food. Russia’s defence ministry accused Ukraine of poisoning some of its soldiers in the Russian-controlled part of Ukraine’s southeastern region of Zaporizhzhia in late July. An adviser to Ukraine’s interior ministry said on Saturday in response the alleged poisoning could have been caused by Russian forces eating expired canned meat. A number of Russian troops were taken to a military hospital with signs of “severe poisoning” on July 31. Tests showed a toxic substance, botulinum toxin type B, in their bodies, the Russian defence ministry said. ... Expired meat? An additional investigation was also being conducted on the possible poisoning of the head of the provisional administration of the Kherson region, Volodymyr Saldo, with alleged chemical warfare agents, it added. Saldo, a former mayor of the city of Kherson who was appointed to head the region of the same name when Russian troops overran it in early March, fell ill in early August. Ukraine’s defence ministry did not immediately respond to the accusations, but interior ministry adviser Anton Gerashchenko addressed the allegation on the Telegram messaging app. “The department [Russian defence ministry] does not clarify whether the poisoning could have been caused by expired canned meat, in which botulinum toxin is often found. Overdue rations have been massively complained about by the occupying forces since the first days of the invasion of Ukraine,” he said. Russia has said its “special military operation” launched on February 24 is aimed at demilitarising Ukraine and protecting Russian speakers on what President Vladimir Putin called historical Russian land. Ukraine and Western countries have viewed it as an unprovoked war of conquest aimed at wiping out Ukraine’s national identity.www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/8/20/russ...
Russia-Ukraine: five lessons from the 19th-century Crimean war A century and a half ago, Russia lost a war it might have expected to win. The consequences reached far and wide Ted Widmer Sun 21 Aug 2022 07.00 BST Last modified on Sun 21 Aug 2022 11.49 BST The war in Ukraine will reach a grim anniversary on 24 August, when we will be six months into a conflict whose terminus we still cannot see. Adviser Mykhailo Podolyak in the sandbagged hallways of the presidential offices in Kyiv. Ukraine aiming to create chaos within Russian forces, Zelenskiy adviser says Read more Can history offer any clues? Vladimir Putin likes to talk about the second world war, Russia’s best war, but the closest parallel is probably the Crimean war, which dragged on for two and a half years, from 1853 to 1856, before the exhausted belligerents worked out a peace agreement. An underachieving Russian military failed to achieve any of its goals. But the British and French, who forged an alliance with the Turks, encountered frustrations of their own as they groped toward a victory that felt pyrrhic at times. Surprisingly, one of the war’s great legacies was felt in the US, where an unexpected chain of events, tied to Russia’s defeat, helped to end slavery. Can any lessons be drawn from the Crimean war today? Lees verder:www.theguardian.com/books/2022/aug/21...
Russia now holds night ambushes to forcibly send Donbas men to Ukraine war In a clear war crime, in the occupied territories of Ukraine’s Donbas, Russia is literally ambushing men on the streets, raiding their homes in the evening and night to use as cannon fodder in the war against Ukraine. The mobilization drive here is so desperate because it failed in Russia proper and losses of Russia’s army are large, says Ukraine’s intelligence. These men are simply being sent to slaughter. On 21 July, human rights activists shared that Russia forcibly mobilized 100,000 men in ORDLO territories it de-facto occupies. Of these, 23,000 had died by last Apr Lees verder:euromaidanpress.com/2022/08/19/russia...

Wie is deze man? Lees verder: www.nu.nl/buitenland/6218919/dochter-...
