TBC...

Ibedrola to Electrify Green Ceramic Production at Porcelanosa Iberdrola and Porcelanosa have launched the first project to electrify ceramic production by combining renewables, green hydrogen and heat pump technology. The so-called GREENH2SKER project is the first joint project that these two companies have launched after recently entering into an agreement to promote the decarbonisation of the industrial ceramic production process. The purpose of the project is twofold. On the one hand, it will improve energy use and reduce CO2 emissions by developing a system that uses both green hydrogen and a heat pump to be implemented in an oven in a Porcelonosa factory in Vila-real. This solution will optimise residual thermal energy, replacing up to half of the natural gas used as fuel with green hydrogen. The integral project includes installing an electrolyser on the Porcelanosa site, powered by a photovoltaic plant to produce green hydrogen. It will also include a technological structure that will utilise excess waste heat and heat from the production lines by means of high-efficiency systems. By making these changes to its combustion system, Porcelanosa will integrate green hydrogen generation with the efficient use of a heat pump to avoid releasing 2,351 tonnes of CO2 /eq year and reduce the energy impact derived from its industrial activity, thus complying with the Decarbonisation Objectives set by the European Union. This innovative solution, the first of its kind implemented in the ceramics industry, opens the road to the decarbonisation of this sector and other thermal energy-intensive industries which are currently heavy users of fossil fuels. As well as Iberdrola and Porcelanosa, Sacmi, an international ceramic industry plant and machinery manufacturer will collaborate on the GREENH2KER project. The measure has been presented to the European Innovation Fund Small Scale Projects programme, aimed at real investment projects with highly innovative content. It will be judged according to its new technology, GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions savings and the maturity and replicability to decarbonise other industry sectors. ENGIE Announces Development of 2GW Renewable Energy in Chile ENGIE has presented at the Presidential Palace of Chile the comprehensive transformation plan for its operations in the country, which includes the development of 2 GW of renewable energy capacity and the end of its coal-fired power generation activities by 2025 (nearly 1.5 GW). This initiative is part of the Group's ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 at the latest. The Group reaffirmed its commitment of closing six units (0.8 GW) of coal capacity, including two facilities already closed in 2019, and the conversion of the three newest units (0.7 GW) to gas or biomass by 2025. ENGIE also announced the development of a 2 GW renewable energy portfolio in Chile, representing an additional 1 GW since the last announcement in 2019. To date 0.6 GW is already under construction. The entire plan involves an investment of EUR 1.5 billion by 2025. It will enable ENGIE to reduce CO2 emissions by 80% from its energy production activities in Chile by 2026.In line with the country's decarbonization strategy, ENGIE has also reaffirmed its commitment to developing green hydrogen production. The Group in Chile, a pioneer in hydrogen development, is the only company to have developed three pilot projects in the country: HyEx, in collaboration with Enaex to develop green ammonia; Hydra, to promote truck mobility in the mining sector; and an initiative with Walmart that will involve the use of 149 cranes powered by green hydrogen. Mooi artikel in De Tijd,
www.tijd.be/dossiers/de-grote-klimaat...

Germany to Chip In for Hydrogen Based Steel Production Bloomberg reported that Germany will spend an additional EUR 5 billion to cut emissions from the steel industry as it steps up efforts to meet increasingly stringent climate targets. Germany’s Economy Minister Mr Peter Altmaier, after a meeting with representatives of the German steel industry, said “Steel is a key industry for Germany. At the same time, it has a special role in efforts to reduce emissions because it is the largest industrial emitter of greenhouse gases. Germany will invest in supporting steel mills hydrogen production projects and other research programs. The funds will also help build the infrastructure necessary to facilitate conversion to low-emission metal production.” Mr Altmaier said “By 2050, Germany will need to invest more than EUR 35 billion to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the sector. The steel industry has made it clear that it is prepared to make a significant contribution to climate neutrality. However, this will not be financially viable without the help of the state. The government is prepared to offer subsidies up to the maximum allowed by EU state aid rules to green the industry.” Steel producers have made some progress in reducing carbon emissions by improving plant efficiency, but now innovation has stalled. Cleaning the steel would require a structural change such as using hydrogen instead of coal to heat the furnaces. That would greatly increase production costs Last July, the Federal Cabinet decided on a “Steel Action Plan” to support the industry. However, there have not yet been any concrete financing commitments for the billions of euros in the conversion of the steel works. Source - Strategic Research Institute
