All rights reserved.
Wärtsilä Delivers 40 MW Equipment for MCM Power in Myanmar The technology group Wärtsilä has been awarded a 40 MW extended engineered equipment supply contract for a power plant in Shwe Taung, southern central part of Myanmar. The baseload power plant will feed the national grid and will help to alleviate the country’s ongoing energy shortage. The order by independent power producer MCM Power with Wärtsilä was placed in September 2019, and the delivery is being expedited on a fast-track basis. The plant will operate on four Wärtsilä 34SG engines fueled by natural gas to provide environmentally sound and affordable power to the region. The plant is expected to become operational in April 2020. The plant is planned to double the output to 80 MW at a future date. Wärtsilä has earlier supplied a 145 MW power plant to Kyaukse township in the Mandalay region of Myanmar. This also was delivered and installed on a fast-track basis because of the country’s urgent need of additional generating capacity. Source : Strategic Research Institute

EBRD Supporting Access to Renewable Energy in Egypt The EBRD is supporting the development of a more resilient and robust electricity grid across Egypt with a EUR 182.9 million loan to the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company to strengthen the transmission network in the country. The EBRD funds will facilitate the integration of 1.3 GW of new renewable energy into the Egyptian electricity system by connecting new renewable energy plants, with the help of new or refurbished high-voltage substations. In addition, the investment will help in reducing electricity losses, thus saving 77,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. The EBRD will also assist EETC and the electricity regulator in designing and structuring a regulatory framework for private-to-private projects, developing a new channel for the growth of the private renewable sector, which will further improve the sector’s competitiveness. This is linked to the electricity law that was passed in 2015, which sets out a roadmap for the liberalisation and reform of the power sector, driven by the government’s aim to generate 20 per cent of Egypt’s energy from renewable sources by 2022. EBRD Debars GE Power of Sweden for 6 Years The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has imposed a six-year term of debarment on GE Power Sweden AB following an investigation in cooperation with the Serious Fraud Office of the UK. The six-year debarment means that GE Power Sweden will not be eligible to be a Bank Counterparty from 27 November 2019 until 26 November 2025. The EBRD’s Office of the Chief Compliance Officer will also submit debarment of GE Power Sweden to the World Bank, the African Development Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and the Inter-American Development Bank, so that this entity is also debarred by these multilateral development banks. The investigation relates to a project to install flue gas desulphurisation units at the Lithuanian Power Plant, a project financed by donor funds administered by the EBRD. The investigation found that, from as early as 2002, representatives of Alstom Power Sweden AB, a predecessor company to GE Power Sweden, had conspired with another Alstom entity to manipulate the technical specifications for the FGD contract in their favour by making payments to Lithuanian government officials. EIA analysis explores India’s projected energy consumption In the US Energy Information Administration’s International Energy Outlook 2019, India has the fastest growing rate of energy consumption globally through 2050. By 2050, EIA projects in the IEO2019 Reference case that India will consume more energy than the United States by the mid-2040s, and its consumption will remain second only to China through 2050. Long-term energy consumption projections in India are uncertain because of its rapid rate of change magnified by the size of its economy. The Issue in Focus article explores two aspects of uncertainty regarding India’s future energy consumption: economic composition by sector and industrial sector energy intensity. When these assumptions vary, it significantly increases estimates of future energy consumption. In the IEO2019 Reference case, EIA projects the economy of India to surpass the economies of the European countries that are part of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and the United States by the late 2030s to become the second-largest economy in the world, behind only China. In EIA’s analysis, gross domestic product values for countries and regions are expressed in purchasing power parity terms. The IEO2019 Reference case shows India’s gross domestic product (GDP) growing from $9 trillion in 2018 to $49 trillion in 2050, an average growth rate of more than 5% per year, which is higher than the global average annual growth rate of 3% in the IEO2019 Reference case. India’s economic growth will continue to drive India’s growing energy consumption. In the IEO2019 Reference case, India’s total energy consumption increases from 35 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu) in 2018 to 120 quadrillion Btu in 2050, growing from a 6% share of the world total to 13%. However, annually, the level of GDP in India has a lower energy consumption than some other countries and regions. In the IEO2019 Combination case, India’s industrial energy consumption grows to 38 quadrillion Btu more in 2050 than in the Reference case. This difference is equal to a more than 4% increase in 2050 global energy use. Source : Strategic Research Institute
