Hyundai Launches Sonata Hybrid Car with Solar Roof Charging System Hyundai Motor is launching its first car with a solar roof charging system. This groundbreaking eco-friendly technology will provide vehicles with additional electrical power, as well as increasing fuel efficiency and driving range. Hyundai Motor’s solar roof charging system makes its debut on the New Sonata Hybrid. The system supports the vehicle’s electric power source, improving fuel efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions. In the coming years, Hyundai will roll out the technology to other vehicles across its range. This is the latest application of a smart solution from Hyundai advancing the mobility industry towards a more sustainable future. The solar roof system includes a structure of silicon solar panels that are mounted on the car’s roof. Being able to charge even while driving, the solar roof system can charge 30 to 60 per cent of the battery per day v. with 6 hours of daily charging, it is expected to increase drivers’ travel distance by an extra 1,300 km annually. The system is composed of a solar panel and a controller. Electricity is produced when solar energy activates the solar panel’s surface, which converts this energy by using photons of light from the sun. This creates the electron-hole pairs in silicon cells, which generate solar electricity. The electricity from this process is converted to the standard voltage by the controller, then stored in the battery. Hyundai Motor took not only efficiency but also design into account while developing the solar charging system. Source : Strategic Research Institute
Next Step For E-Mobility At Daimler Buses Preparing for the market launch of high-output charging, Daimler Buses has equipped its Mannheim bus plant with a central charging station for the fully-electric eCitaro. It can also be used to provide the newly released eCitaro with electricity via a pantograph. The special feature of this charging station is that the charging devices are suspended at a height of around five metres above the ground. The station serves to charge the eCitaro as part of the production process and ahead of delivery to customers. Plus, new charging technologies such as charging management, new communications protocols, new hardware for charging using a cable or a roof-mounted pantograph can be tried and tested. What’s more, the infrastructure is expandable as required. Flexible and modular infrastructure concept for the relevant charging solutions: charging via cable, pantograph and charging rail The charging station is compatible with all common charging technologies: 150 kW cable-bound charging, 300 kW rapid charging using a pantograph on the bus roof and 300 kW rapid charging using a permanently installed set of charging rails on the roof of the bus. In technical jargon, the latter is referred to as an inverted pantograph. All four parking bays are setup to handle the particularly common cable-bound charging of the eCitaro. And in line with this, it can handle the different charging systems of two manufacturers. Using them, buses can be charged with an output of 150 kW. Two parking bays additionally offer rapid charging via the vehicle roof; one uses a pantograph, the other uses charging rails. In both cases, the charging output is 300 kW. The entire system has a modular design to ensure that it can be expanded as required. As space in the bus plant is at a premium, Mercedes-Benz has decided to move off the ground, installing the eCitaro charging station at the height of the upper floor of the building. An idea which many transport companies also use. It doesn’t just save space, it also protects against costly accidents between manoeuvring buses and the charging technology. The electric charging station is located directly behind the vehicle handover hall and thus has a strategically interesting location. To save electrically-powered city buses from having to carry out complex manoeuvring, the charging station has been built in a space-saving way to resemble a bridge. The city buses drive straight under the charging station and park right there for charging. The charging station has four parking bays. It uses four charging devices with 150 kW output each and two with 300 kW each. The six charging devices enjoy shared use by three different technologies and two different manufacturers. The total connection power at the charging station is an impressive 1.2 megawatts. The corresponding cables are roughly as thick as a human arm and run in an extendible cable channel in the ground. The charging station is positioned on a total of ten pillars and is accessible from all sides. For service purposes, wide steps lead up to the charging devices on the upper deck, as it were. These are protected against the influences of the weather by means of a roof. Source : Strategic Research Institute

Sumitomo Electric SEVD-11U EV Electric vehicle high-power quick-charger connector assembly SEVD™-11U sold by Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd has been certified by UL, a US-based third-party safety science organization, as complying with the UL2251*1 safety standard for high-power charge boost mode. SEVD™-11U is the first quick-charger connector that has obtained the UL certification after a certification requirement decision was issued for additional functions. This certification is based on the safety standard UL2251 for high-power charge boost mode established in March 2017 by the CHAdeMO Association through its standard specification 1.2 for quick charging stations for EVs. To ensure the safety of high-power charge boost mode, a CRD for additional functions was issued to the UL2251 on June 18, 2019. The boost mode enables users to charge batteries at a higher current than the rated value for a certain period of time, if the thermal capacity is acceptable within a rated temperature range. This technology enables supply of a larger current and shortens the charging time of EVs, further improving customer convenience. The certified SEVD™-11U has excellent operability and high safety while nearly doubling the charging capacity of the conventional product to a rated 600 VDC, 200 A. Sumitomo Electric launched SEVD™-11U in June, 2018. Starting with the UL certification for North America, we will work on achieving certification in other regions in order to further promote sales of SEVD™-11U in Europe and Japan. Chile Incorporates 100 New BYD Electric Buses Chilean Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, Gloria Hutt, along with the Ministers of Energy, Juan Carlos Jobet, and the Environment, Carolina Schmidt together with representatives of BYD, Enel and the operator Metbus, received 100 new BYD electric buses from China on Wednesday at the port of San Antonio. Three Chilean Ministers (Transportation, Energy and Environment) welcomed the buses, together with representatives of BYD, Enel and Metbus. The buses, BYD K9FE, were shipped from the port of Shanghai on July 1, beginning the overland journey from San Antonio to the Chilean capital Santiago, where they will be integrated into the fleet that operates on the Avenida Grecia, the only completely electrified bus line in all of the Americas, and one that benefits more than 660 thousand people weekly. Following the arrival of this batch of electric buses, another 83 units will be added in mid-August. These 183 units of BYD pure electric buses will join the 100 electric buses that BYD and local partner Enel brought into Santiago last December, which gave BYD a dominant share of more than 60% in the capital's promising electric bus market, and created the largest pure electric bus fleet in Latin America. Minister Ms Hutt pointed out that “the arrival of this new fleet of electric buses demonstrates once again that the qualitative leap in public transport will not change, as well as our commitment to continue raising the quality of people's travel experience and, of course, their quality of life. It is a profound and radical transformation, which is embodied in the next tenders that we are promoting”. With the arrival of the new electric buses, about 6% of the capital's fleet is now electrified and emissions-free. These 12-meter vehicles, like those already operating in Santiago, have Wi-Fi, USB ports, universal accessibility for people with reduced mobility, cameras and a segregated cab for driver safety, as well as padded seats and low floors. Growing EV Infrastructure to Drive Copper Demand – Wood Mackenzie Growing fears of a global economic slowdown continue to weigh on the copper demand, but Wood Mackenzie sees potential growth as demand grows for electrical vehicles. Henry Salsibury, research analyst at Wood Mackenzie, said “More than 20 million electric vehicle charging stations are expected to be deployed globally by 20230, consuming 250% more copper compared to 2019. As it stands, range anxiety, worrying that a battery will run out of power mid-journey, is a key psychological barrier standing in the way of more widespread EV adoption. One way to address this is to roll out more charging infrastructure. As this happens, more connections to the electrical grid will be required and more copper will be needed as the network expands.” According to the research firm, coppers physical properties make it the best base metal to conduct electricity and accommodate the higher temperatures common in electric vehicles. While aluminium is the closest alternatives, aluminium cables need to have a cross-sectional area that is double the size of any copper equivalent to conduct the same amount of electricity, the company said. Along with meeting growing infrastructure demand, Salsibury noted that electric vehicles consume about three times more copper than internal combustion engines. He said “The amount goes up as the size of the vehicle increases. For example, a fully electric bus uses between 11 and 16 times more copper than an ICE passenger vehicle - depending on the size of the battery and the actual bus.” He said “By 2040, we predict that passenger EVs will consume more than 3.7 million tonne of copper every year. In comparison, passenger internal combustion engine vehicles will need just over 1 million tonne. If we look at cumulative demand, between now and 2040 passenger EVs will consume 35.4 million tonne of copper, around 5 million tonnes more than is required to meet current passenger ICE demand.” The report comes as copper prices struggle to find momentum after falling to a two-year low at the start of the month. September high-grade copper prices last traded at $2.5815 a pound, down 0.29% on the day. Source : Strategic Research Institute
Platinum Giant Wants to Create New Battery to Replace Cobalt, Nickel Demand The world's top platinum and palladium supplier has an answer to the electric-car boom that may pose a long-term threat to its biggest market: invent a new battery. Anglo American Platinum wants to develop a lithium battery that uses platinum-group metals instead of cobalt and nickel. The aim is to create a new multi-billion dollar source of demand for the metals as electric vehicles reduce the need for traditional fuel auto catalysts. Platinum miners have good reason to be worried. Electric-car sales are forecast to reach 56 million by 2040, making up about 57% of the overall car market versus 2% now, according to Bloomberg. That could curb demand for auto catalysts, which use platinum and palladium to clean toxic emissions. Platinum is already under pressure prices are near a decade-low as drivers turn away from diesel engines and supplies remain ample. Mr Mike Jones, CEO of miner Platinum Group Metals, which is working with Amplats to develop the new battery said that "Platinum could play a big role in batteries, but we need to thrift out the other metals to make it viable.” Amplats and Platinum Group Metals have agreed to invest up to USD 4 million in Lion Battery Technologies to find a way to use platinum metals to keep batteries cool and create a lighter product with a greater driving range. The venture is studying how much metal will be needed and aims to have a commercial prototype in three to five years. The idea is not new. Academics have researched the technology since the 1990s, but developing it has so far been unfeasible. There is no proof yet that such a battery can be mass manufactured, and no technology right now can compete with nickel-cobalt batteries in terms of affordability and performance, said George Heppel, a battery metals analyst at CRU Group. Part of the challenge is that platinum metals are much more expensive than cobalt and nickel. Early research also shows that 0.5 to 1 ounce of platinum or palladium could be used in the new technology, as much as six times the amount of metal currently used in traditional autocatalysts, said Jones of Platinum Group Metals. Mr James Frith, an energy storage analyst said that "The battery industry is trying to reduce its reliance on expensive/resource scarce material, so I question how hungry the market would be for these batteries.” While electric-car sales are already rising, platinum consumption in the auto sector remained fairly robust in recent years amid stricter emissions rules, and the industry has boosted palladium usage, helping push prices to a record. Total demand may rise about 18 percent for platinum through 2030 and 12 percent for palladium, according to Noah Capital Markets. Source : Strategic Research Institute
New battery from MAHLE Reduces Weight & CO2 Footprint of Electric Vehicles A key factor in the acceptance of electric vehicles is sufficient cruising range. Instead of achieving this by using ever larger batteries, MAHLE offers a newly developed battery housing with integrated thermal management as a solution for increasing the rapid charging capability of the battery. This allows traction batteries to be about 40 percent smaller and thus recharged very quickly. MAHLE is thereby not only reducing the CO2 footprint of the electric vehicle, but also lowering the demand for raw materials for battery production, which are becoming increasingly scarce worldwide. To implement the required high cooling performance during the rapid charging process, the battery cells are surrounded by dielectric fluid as part of the MAHLE battery housing concept. The fiber-reinforced plastic design is not only lightweight, but also extremely robust. The concept also provides massive weight benefits in the vehicle due to the smaller battery. Dr Otmar Scharrer, Head of Corporate Research and Advanced Engineering at MAHLE said that “With our new battery housing concept, we are making electric vehicles more economical and environmentally friendly—while remaining just as attractive to customers. Both its moderate production costs and the elimination of expensive, powerful batteries are making a targeted contribution to bringing affordable electric vehicles to a broader market.” The need to cool batteries and power electronics gives rise to complex circuits that substantially increase the requirements on individual components and thermal management control systems. MAHLE has supported the growing electrification of the powertrain and the associated tougher requirements right from the start and is continuously expanding its expertise in research and development.
Charging Stations in UK Surpass Number of Fuel Stations There are now almost 1,000 more public places to charge electric cars than there are forecourts to pump petrol in the UK 9,300 EV charging locations compared to 8,400 fuel stations. The crossover happened more than a year before Nissan’s 2016 prediction of August 2020 a result of the accelerating adoption of EVs (electric vehicles) amongst UK motorists. In less than a century since Britain’s first fuel station opened November 1919 at Aldermaston in Berkshire the number of forecourts has peaked, declined and been overtaken by charging stations designed for battery, not combustion, powered cars. Almost 80% of UK petrol stations have closed since 1970, whilst the number of electric vehicle charging locations has increased from a few hundred in 2011 (when the Nissan LEAF went on sale) to more than 9,000 in August 2019. Of these locations, more than 1600 provide ‘rapid charging’, and can recharge a typical EV battery to around 80% in under an hour. According to Zap-Map, two new rapid charge devices came online every day in the last month. Almost all UK motorway service stations have charging stations installed, the majority of which provide a rapid charge option. Transport for London has installed more than 1,000 EV charge points in the last year alone3, yet supply of conventional fuel within the capital is becoming scarcer. Central London has nearly half as many petrol stations per car as the Scottish Highlands4; only four remain within the congestion-charge zone. One of the country’s oldest forecourts, the Bloomsbury Service Station, which had been in operation since 1926, was closed in 2008. The introduction of the new Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in April 2019, has led to increasing numbers of London drivers looking to zero-emission solutions for their commuter or commercial transport needs. Most electric vehicle owners only need to charge at home however, so the UK government is looking to further support EV adoption, recently announcing a proposal for the installation of charge points for EVs in all new housing. Roland Tameling 18-08-19, 11:13 Laatste update: 11:37 Het is vandaag bloedheet in Tilburg.
Volkswagen ID.BUGGY at Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance For the first time the Volkswagen ID. BUGGY hits the roads and beaches of California. The concept car will also be shown at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance during Monterey Car Week. Since its world debut at the Geneva International Motor Show in March, the ID. BUGGY has created buzz about the future possibilities of e- mobility. Drawing inspiration from the classic dune buggies of the 60s, the ID. BUGGY shows the versatility of the modular electric drive matrix and puts the fun in functional. The BUGGY’s modular design allows for the composite upper body to be detached from the MEB chassis, opening up a world of possibilities for third-party manufacturers, as the original Meyers Manx kit did for the first buggies. The lack of doors and a roof make the ID. BUGGY ready for the purest form of classic beach cruising. Off-road features include standard 18-inch wheels and BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A® off-road tires (255/55 at front and 285/60 at rear), as well as solid aluminum underbody protection. Two robust red steel eyelets are integrated in the bumpers for towing and the reinforced windshield frame and the Targa bar provide rollover support. Inside, the ID. BUGGY features a minimalist aesthetic and waterproof materials. A hexagonal steering wheel, covered with water-repellent Nappa leather, features touch controls, and a digital instrument cluster keeps the dash uncluttered. Despite the shortened wheelbase of the concept car, passengers have an unusually large amount of space. The zero-emissions drivetrain of the I.D. BUGGY is made up of the electric motor integrated in the rear axle, with power electronics, a single-speed gearbox, and the high-voltage flat battery (62 kWh) arranged in the car floor to save space. The electric motor delivers 150 kW / 204 horsepower and maximum torque of 310 Nm from standstill, and gives the vehicle an expected range of 250 on the WLTP cycle. The concept car sprints from zero to 100 km/h in just 7.2 seconds. The maximum speed is electronically controlled at 160 km/h. Source : Strategic Research Institute
ABB to Install EV Charger Network in Singapore ABB has won a contract from Shell to deliver and commission its market-leading electric vehicle infrastructure at ten Shell stations island-wide. The first ABB Terra 54 DC (Direct Current) fast charger has now been switched on and is ready to charge at Shell’s Sengkang station, in north-east Singapore. Additional chargers will be commissioned over the next few months. ABB’s 50kW fast chargers, which can charge a vehicle's battery up from zero to 80 percent within 20-30 minutes, is compatible with most EV and has been certified to perform optimally within the environment of a petrol station. Furthermore, through ABB Ability™ connected services, the company’s advanced digital management solution, chargers will be connected to back offices, payment platforms or smart grids systems while charger status monitoring, remote diagnostics, repair and over-the-air software updates minimize downtime and keeps running costs low. Mr Frank Muehlon, Head of ABB’s global business for EV Charging Infrastructure, said that “With more than 11,000 DC fast chargers sold across 76 countries world-wide, ABB plays a leading role in the development of sustainable mobility with its innovative and digital technologies and has participated in a growing number of projects around the world and in Singapore. This latest project will further accelerate Singapore’s transition to a future mobility ecosystem that is safer, cleaner and more accessible.” Source : Strategic Research Institute
Mercedes-Benz EQV First Fully-Electric Premium MPV Mercedes-Benz Vans presented the Concept EQV as a study at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2019. Now the series version of the Mercedes-Benz EQV is celebrating its debut. The next member of the Mercedes EQ family combines emissions-free mobility with impressive driving abilities, high functionality and aesthetic design as the first fully-electric premium MPV from Mercedes-Benz. The Mercedes-Benz EQV will be displayed to the public for the first time at this year’s IAA. The technical highlights include a range of 405 kilometres and the rapid charging of the high-voltage battery from 10 to 80% in less than an hour. The Mercedes-Benz EQV also offers ultimate comfort in the interior and unparalleled flexibility. Customers can also choose between two different wheel bases. Mr Marcus Breitschwerdt, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans said that “Our MPVs meet the highest standards in terms of functionality and variability. The EQV also does not compromise in this respect. It offers comfortable handling, dynamic electro-aesthetics, intuitive operation and generous space and all locally emissions-free. This means that it offers all of the typical qualities of the brand and segment that our customers expect, whether as a family car or a shuttle vehicle with a lounge-like character.” Source : Strategic Research Institute
