India factories demand to generate own power to help – Thermax MD ET reported that Thermax Ltd, an Indian maker of electricity-generation equipment, expects demand for captive power plants, typically small units to meet the internal needs of a business, to rise in the next 4-5 years as investments in large power projects slow down and state utilities struggle to give reliable supplies. Thermax’s MDMr MS Unnikrishnan said in an interview “Industries such as food processing, textiles, pharmaceuticals and automobiles are expanding capacities and will look at generating their own power rather than depending on the unreliable grid. Lack of investment in power plants in the country is going to compel many new investors to go for captive power plants. It is our bread and butter.” He said “Equipment orders for large thermal plants shrank to about 4GW in the year ended March 31, leaving more than three-quarters of the equipment.” However, captive power is not without its problems. The plants are at a disadvantage compared with conventional power producers in summer months when power demand surges and supplies are prioritized to non-captive consumers. While getting coal from overseas to Indian shores is a solution, taking it from the port to plants, especially those in the hinterland, can take time as the majority of railway carriages are reserved for serving grid power stations. EU clears RWE takeover of EON electricity generation assets Economic Times reported that EU on Tuesday approved RWE's acquisition of fellow German energy company EON's renewable and nuclear generation assets as part of a major asset swap. The European Commission's competition authorities said the proposed transaction, which will see RWE acquire a 16.67 percent minority share in EON along with the bulk of its nuclear and renewable generation assets, raised no competition concerns. Germany's own competition watchdog also gave its approval to the deal, which forms part of a complex exchange between the two companies announced in March last year that will see RWE move to focus on generation and wholesale and EON concentrate on the distribution and retail of electricity and gas. EU competition officials looked at how the transaction would affect the generation and wholesale supply of electricity, particularly in Germany -- the main country where RWE and EON's activties overlap. The probe found that the acquisition would increase RWE's 20 percent market share only very slightly and would not allow it to influence market prices by withholding electricity supply. The commission said in a statement that "The commission therefore concluded that the transaction would raise no competition concerns as RWE would continue facing effective competition after the transaction on the markets for generation and wholesale supply of electricity, and cleared the case unconditionally.” RWE welcomed the decision Tuesday, with finance director Markus Krebber calling it a major step towards making RWE "a world leader" in the renewable energy sector. EON's acquisition of RWE's distribution and retail business is still being assessed separately by the commission. The RWE-EON deal has the backing of Chancellor Angela Merkel, who last year welcomed the two companies' efforts to find "the best ways" to assure "the supply of sustainable energy" and respond to the country's energy shift away from fossil fuels. Indian company to install underground electric cables in Kathmandu Economic Times reported that an Indian contractor company will install underground electric cables in Kathmandu to minimise the risk of electrocution and to beautify the city. KP Industries Ltd will undertake the project worth INR 6.60 billion with a deadline of 30 months from its initiation. Nepal Electricity Authority has decided to install the underground power lines in Kathmandu. NEA officials said that in the first phase of the project, underground cables would replace overhead power line in grids overseen by Majarajgunj Distribution Centre and the Ratnapark Distribution Centre. NEA Maharajgunj Project Chief Abhishek Adhikari said that Overhead electricity cables and telecommunications lines have made the streets ugly and increased the risk of untoward incidents, and the project aims to resolve such issues. In June 2017, NEA had said it would place all physical infrastructure of areas that fall under Maharajgunj and Ratnapark distribution centres underground within two years as a pilot project. NEA is implementing the project with funding from Asian Development Bank's soft loan assistance worth USD 150 million under Power Extension and Distribution Capacity Increment Project. ScottishPower announces record GBP 2 billion UK investment in 2019 ScottishPower has announced it will spend up to £2billion in the UK in 2019, the company’s biggest ever investment in the country in a single year. The announcement came as ScottishPower updated its investment plans following the sale of its thermal generation business and transition to 100% renewable energy in 2018. Mr Keith Anderson CEO of ScottishPower said that “Our first investment plan since leaving coal and gas behind is a historic milestone for ScottishPower and is a vote of confidence in the UK’s commitment to decarbonising the economy. In a time of uncertainty the UK needs to deliver its Industrial and Energy strategy and that’s what we’re providing with our biggest ever investment in a single year. Consumers want and need access to reliable, clean and affordable energy. That is what ScottishPower is focused on delivering and as long as Government climate change commitments stay firm, with sensible policies to support them, this investment will continue. Now that we have sold our gas power stations our growth plans are about cleaner and smarter power that will help the UK to decarbonise faster and we have set out the part we will play in the transition to electrify the economy where it matters most now – in transport and in heating." Between 2018-2022 ScottishPower will spend GBP 6billion in the UK with 40% on new renewable energy generation, 42% on smarter enhanced networks and 15% on innovative services and products for customers. ScottishPower will invest in smarter services for customers, including products to unlock the market for electric vehicle ownership. As part of its strategy for growth ScottishPower announced plans for a new public electric charging service based within the company’s Retail division. The new business will install fast chargers across the UK at strategic commercial locations from winter 2019. The company also announced plans for a 50MW battery storage project at Whitelee the UK’s largest onshore windfarm. The large-scale battery project will be the first of a series of storage schemes, mainly located at windfarms and at strategic points on the network. ScottishPower believes the combination of renewable energy and flexible storage are the most cost effective low carbon solution for consumers. In renewables ScottishPower set out plans to develop a 1GW pipeline of onshore wind projects by 2025. Onshore wind remains the lowest cost technology for new electricity generation in the UK and ScottishPower sees substantial opportunities for the continued development of onshore wind projects across Scotland and other areas of the UK. Construction continues at pace for the East Anglia ONE offshore windfarm located 43km off the Suffolk coast. The GBP 2.5billion project will see 102 Siemens Gamesa turbines deployed, each with a capacity of 7 megawatts; which could in total provide enough clean energy to power the equivalent of more than 630,000 homes annually. Over 50 percent of the project’s total investment will be spent in the UK, ensuring the benefits of East Anglia ONE are felt across the country. Source : Strategic Research Institute
First power to heat plant in Hamburg to convert wind energy into heat The largest power-to-heat plant to date in Germany officially entered service on 29 November 2018, but as early as September, the new plant supplied its first megawatt-hour of heat to the district heating network in Hamburg. The plant is intended to generate heat during peak-load periods and, in future, convert wind energy into heat to be used for heating purposes. Project Manager Mr Bernd Gross said that "Delivering the first megawatt-hour enabled us to show that the new electric boiler is ready for use. This modern plant will also be able to convert wind energy into heat and therefore make a further contribution to sector coupling and the energy transition in the long term." The plan is to use the plant in the event of a short-term surplus of energy from renewable sources. Wind energy can then be used to heat water that will be supplied to the district heating network. Mr Gross explains that "Generally speaking, it works like a giant continuous-flow water heater and enables us to reduce the use of fossil fuels to generate heat and cut CO2 emissions.” He added that "We want to integrate renewable energy sources primarily wind in Northern Germany into the system to a much greater degree and couple it with other sectors," says Gross. Using more renewable energy to generate heat or in industrial processes while gradually replacing fossil fuel sources will enable us to take a number of important steps along the road to the energy transition." The plant is a major project within the “Smart Energy Showcases – Digital Agenda for the Energy Transition" funding programme launched by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The aim is to use this power-to-heat plant to determine the basic technical and economic conditions for the operation of a plant of this kind. The programme should establish whether it is possible to supply the entire region of Northern Germany and its 4.5 million inhabitants with renewable energy by 2035. Morocco and Spain set to construct a third power interconnector Construction Review Online reported that government of Morocco and Spain have signed a memorandum of understanding to construct the third interconnection cable between the two countries. Similar to the previous two, this third 400-kV link will have a technical capacity of 700 MW. The combined commercial capacity of the three links will amount to 1,500 MW. Spanish grid operator Red Electrica de Espana and its Moroccan peer L’Office National de l’Electricite et de l’Eau Potable will be in charge of the study and analysis of the project. The project will require USD 169.9 million which will be shared 50/50 between the two counties. Ambitious plans to harness North Africa’s solar resource and export the energy to Europe would depend on such trans-continental grid connection. The interconnection cable project upon completion is estimated to bring f US USD 140 million to the Spanish electricity system gained from tolls and congestion rent since an auction system for the management of the exchange capacity could be implemented. The project will also help meet the goal of energy regulations of countries in North Africa to be compatible with European regulations and also the goal for governments and private investors tapped for big bucks. Commissioning of the project is expected to take place before 2026. Moreover, the two countries have also signed a second collaboration agreement that is aimed at establishing a strategic partnership on energy with objectives focused on the integration of networks and the energy markets, development of renewable energy and energy efficiency. Interconnection between Spain and Morocco represents one of the maximum exponents of the policy of cooperation between Europe and the Southern Mediterranean countries, backed by the European Community. This is the only submarine interconnection between two continents. The first power link was built in the 1996 while the second was an undersea cable which came into service in 2005 and double transit capacity to 1400 MW. Source : Construction Review Online

United States consumed more energy in 2018 than ever before - EIA US EIA announced that primary energy consumption in the United States reached a record high of 101.3 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu) in 2018, up 4% from 2017 and 0.3% above the previous record set in 2007. The increase in 2018 was the largest increase in energy consumption, in both absolute and percentage terms, since 2010. Consumption of fossil fuels—petroleum, natural gas, and coal—grew by 4% in 2018 and accounted for 80% of US total energy consumption. Natural gas consumption reached a record high, rising by 10% from 2017. This increase in natural gas, along with relatively smaller increases in the consumption of petroleum fuels, renewable energy, and nuclear electric power, more than offset a 4% decline in coal consumption. Petroleum consumption in the United States increased to 20.5 million barrels per day (b/d), or 37 quadrillion Btu in 2018, up nearly 500,000 b/d from 2017 and the highest level since 2007. Growth was driven primarily by increased use in the industrial sector, which grew by about 200,000 b/d in 2018. The transportation sector grew by about 140,000 b/d in 2018 as a result of increased demand for fuels such as petroleum diesel and jet fuel. Natural gas consumption in the United States reached a record high 83.1 billion cubic feet/day (Bcf/d), the equivalent of 31 quadrillion Btu, in 2018. Natural gas use rose across all sectors in 2018, primarily driven by weather-related factors that increased demand for space heating during the winter and for air conditioning during the summer. As more natural gas-fired power plants came online and existing natural gas-fired power plants were used more often, natural gas consumption in the electric power sector increased 15% from 2017 levels to 29.1 Bcf/d. Natural gas consumption also grew in the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors in 2018, increasing 13%, 10%, and 4% compared with 2017 levels, respectively. Coal consumption in the United States fell to 688 million short tons (13 quadrillion Btu) in 2018, the fifth consecutive year of decline. Almost all of the reduction came from the electric power sector, which fell 4% from 2017 levels. Coal-fired power plants continued to be displaced by newer, more efficient natural gas and renewable power generation sources. In 2018, 12.9 gigawatts (GW) of coal-fired capacity were retired, while 14.6 GW of net natural gas-fired capacity were added. Renewable energy consumption in the United States reached a record high 11.5 quadrillion Btu in 2018, rising 3% from 2017, largely driven by the addition of new wind and solar power plants. Wind electricity consumption increased by 8% while solar consumption rose 22%. Biomass consumption, primarily in the form of transportation fuels such as fuel ethanol and biodiesel, accounted for 45% of all renewable consumption in 2018, up 1% from 2017 levels. Increases in wind, solar, and biomass consumption were partially offset by a 3% decrease in hydroelectricity consumption. Nuclear consumption in the United States increased less than 1% compared with 2017 levels but still set a record for electricity generation in 2018. The number of total operable nuclear generating units decreased to 98 in September 2018 when the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station in New Jersey was retired. Annual average nuclear capacity factors, which reflect the use of power plants, were slightly higher at 92.6% in 2018 compared with 92.2% in 2017. Source : Strategic Research Institute
South Korea to cut dependency on fossil fuel a shift to renewable energy Yonhap reported that South Korea's industry ministry said that it will significantly cut the country's dependency on conventional energy sources, such as coal, and move toward environment-friendly resources for sustainable growth. During the public hearing for a draft of the country's energy master plan, which is renewed every five years with a 20 year goal, the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy said it will expand the portion of renewable sources to around 30 to 35% in its portfolio by 2040, significantly up from 7.6% posted in 2017. The ministry is expected to draw up details on the scope of the reduction in its energy supply plan that will be announced later this year. The proposal is in line with the Moon Jae-in government's push to move toward clean and safe energy sources to meet the country's demand for electricity. The ministry said "The new policy goal will focus on reforming the structure of energy demand instead of expanding the supply to build a high efficiency and low-consumption energy market. To cope with fine dust air pollution and greenhouse gases, the government will drastically reduce power generation from coal by banning new plants and shutting down old facilities. The government will seek to apply liquefied natural gas in more diverse areas and stop construction of new nuclear reactors. In order to maintain the safe management of existing nuclear reactors, the government said it will continue to maintain core capabilities while fostering new areas as a follow-up for the nuclear phase-out policy, such as the reactor decommissioning industry.” Last year, coal accounted for 41.9% of South Korea's energy portfolio in terms of power generation, followed by nuclear with 23.4% and LNG with 26.8%. Federal government & BC Hydro funding transmission line expansion in Peace region in British Columbia The Canadian Press reported that British Columbia's northeast is getting an electricity boost to help power natural gas expansion in the Peace River region and fight global warming. The federal government and Crown-owned BC Hydro have announced a project to expand transmission lines to meet the area's growing industrial and development demands. Federal Natural Resources Minister Amarjeet Sohi says the government and BC Hydro will expand the Peace area's existing transmission infrastructure by building two parallel 230-kilovolt power lines running from the Site C dam near Fort St John to an area east of Chetwynd. BC Premier John Horgan and Sohi say the project will help industry move to clean, renewable energy, which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Chris O'Riley, BC Hydro's president and chief operating officer, says the gas industry is the primary driver for electricity demand in the area and the project will provide industrial users with clean energy.
