Chinese GEM halts purchases of cobalt from Glencore – Report

Reuters reported that Chinese battery firm GEM has stopped buying cobalt from Glencore as the price of the battery material crashed below that agreed in a three-year deal between the two companies, sources close to the matter said. GEM said in a March 14 regulatory filing that it would buy 52,800 tonnes of cobalt from mining and trading giant Glencore between 2018 and 2020, without revealing the price.

Cobalt prices CBD0 on the London Metal Exchange have nearly halved to around USD 55,000 (43,447.35 pounds) a tonne since late March, when they hit record highs on expected demand growth. Cobalt is crucial for the lithium-ion rechargeable batteries used to power electric vehicles, a growing sector of the auto industry.

Global prices tumbled due to a surplus of cobalt in China, the world’s largest manufacturer of cobalt chemicals and electric vehicle batteries. The market is expected to struggle for some years to come due to expected oversupply.

One source said that “The price went down so much, adding that GEM had no alternative supplier but was using its inventories of cobalt and that the Chinese firm had not attempted to renegotiate the contract recently.”

According to the filing, GEM and its subsidiaries were to purchase 13,800 tonnes of cobalt from Glencore in 2018, 18,000 tonnes in 2019 and 21,000 tonnes in 2020.

Another source said that “GEM didn’t buy because of what happened to the price. They didn’t open the letters of credit and said to Glencore, sorry, but we can’t take it at the agreed price.”

One source said GEM had tried to renegotiate the price, but that was much earlier in the year when cobalt was nearer USD 70,000 a tonne. Another source said there had been some moves recently to try to renegotiate.

The sources said they did not know whether Glencore would try to sue GEM, but one said Chinese law meant “the odds are stacked against foreign firms” wanting compensation when contracts had broken down.

GEM did not respond to a request for comment. Glencore declined to comment.

Letters of credit are issued by banks to guarantee payments made to specific companies or people so long as requirements such as the delivery of goods are met.

Brazil’s biggest coal-producing state eying Chinese investment

Dialogo Chino reported that mired in a profound and lengthy economic crisis, the state of Rio Grande do Sul, which holds 90% of Brazil’s coal reserves, has opted to expand mining and create a coal gasification centre. The initiative would enable the government, billions of dollars in debt, to create thousands of jobs but also risks locking-in into high-carbon energy infrastructure. As the state set out to find foreign investors for the project, it found China. Mr Susana Kakuta, Rio Grande do Sul state secretary of mines and energy, said that “We know that China as a whole has been investing in the area of energy. China uses technologies that are already well-established worldwide, so it is a big win-win, for them and for Brazil, especially for Rio Grande do Sul, in a new opportunity for coal from our state.”

Though, the deal is not yet done, Kakuta, claims there is interest in the coal centre among companies already investing in the Brazilian energy sector, such as the Shenzen Energy Group and Zhejiang Electric Power Construction Co (ZEPCC).

China has been financing coal in countries around the world, in a move that contradicts domestic policy, which has made efforts to slow the domestic coal sector and promote renewable energy technologies.

China powers up next-generation nuclear plant

Economic Times reported that French energy giant EDF and its partner China General Nuclear Power Group announced that they have powered up the world's first next-generation EPR nuclear reactor, a major milestone for the industry. The Taishan 1 project has been under development for many years and is the world's first EPR reactor - which uses a pressurised water design - to enter into commercial service. The two EPR reactors at the Taishan nuclear power plant will be the most powerful in the world when fully completed and can supply 5 million Chinese users, the companies said in a press release.

EPR reactors promise advances in safety and efficiency over conventional reactors while producing less waste.

Yet EDF has faced serious problems rolling out the technology and has managed to sell just a handful of the reactors as construction problems piled up.

The Taishan project is a joint venture between majority shareholder CGN and minority shareholders EDF and regional Chinese utility Yuedian.

Mr He Yu, Chairman of China General Nuclear Power Group said that "As the world's first EPR project, Taishan offers valuable lessons and solutions for the construction of similar reactors worldwide.”

The new plant will prevent the emission of around 21 million tons of carbon dioxide a year.

Top 4 Japanese automakers sale in China

Gasgoo reported that although there is still half a month before 2018 ends, it is almost settled that China's auto sales will go downhill this year compared with 2017. However, two major Japanese carmakers, namely, Nissan and Toyota, still gained positive year on year growth in terms of the sales for the first eleven months. Honda posted a YoY drop of 5.6% in year-to-date sales, yet this is not a bad performance since the company has been stuck with the engine oil issue for most days of the year.

    Nissan
Nissan saw its sales in China fell 9.2% YoY to 150,139 units (including PVs, light CVs and imported vehicles) in November, while still climbed 3.9% over a year ago in terms of YTD sales. It is expected that its annual sales will hit a new high this year, exceeding the 2017 sales of 1,519,714 units if the rising momentum continues in December. The PV unit logged a YoY decline of 10.6% with 122,105 vehicles delivered in November. To be specific, Dongfeng Nissan sold 111,097 vehicles. Its best seller was still the Sylphy Series whose Nov. sales rose 9.4% to 48,186 units. The sales of the X-TRAIL and the Qashqai compact SUV reached 18,428 units and 13,658 units, climbing 6.2% and shrinking 10.2% respectively from the year-ago period. The other PV brand Dongfeng Venucia had a sales volume of 11,008 units in November. The sales of several core models the Venucia D60, T70 and &90 reached 5,528 units, 3,299 units and 1,602 units respectively. In November, the sales of light CVs dropped 4.5% from a year earlier to 23,025 units. However, this unit achieved a YoY growth of 4.1% with the YTD sales amounting to 192,542 units.

    Honda
Honda delivered a total of 1,240,384 vehicles in China from January to November with a year-on-year (YoY) decline of 5.6%. As for the performance in November, the Japanese automaker saw its sales in China fall 4.3% YoY to 136,714 units, among which 67,735 units from GAC Honda (shrinking 7.8% YoY) and 68,979 units from Dongfeng Honda (edging down 0.7% YoY). This is the fifth month in a row for GAC Honda to see YoY sales decline. Last month, a total of 66,596 Honda branded vehicles were handed over. Three models—the Accord, the Fit and the CRIDER whose Nov. sales exceeded 10,000 units all gained positive YoY growth, yet they still failed to offset the negative downturn caused by other models. The Acura brand has suffered consecutive YoY sales decline of over 40% since July. What is noteworthy that the Nov. sales of the RDX skyrocketed 160.4% from the previous year to 237 units. Dongfeng Honda Nov. sales basically remained steady compared with the same period a year ago. Two major sales drivers—the CIVIC and the XR-V both saw an evident YoY increase exceeding 20% in Nov. sales. The sales of the INSPIRE, the company's latest flagship sedan model hitting the market on October 25, reached only 943 units last month, limited by less sufficient production capacity.

    Toyota
Last month, Toyota is the only one Japanese automaker on the list that realized positive YoY growth thanks to the vigorous sales performance made by the Corolla. According to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), the wholesale volume of the Corolla evidently grew 12.4% to 35,037 units, the second runner-up among sedan models delivered in China by Nov. sales. In the meantime, the sales of the Levin sedan reached 19,911 units, up by 9.5% over a year ago. Toyota-owned premium car brand Lexus saw its China sales substantially climb 28.6% over a year ago to 16,587 units, achieving positive YoY growth for 5 straight months. The monthly sales of hybrid models reached 4,673 units, accounting for 29% of the brand's total sales in this country. China's tariff slash policy over imported vehicles has continued benefitting Lexus's China marketing performance.

    Mazda
Mazda Motor (China) Co Ltd reported a year-on-year (YoY) retail sales drop of 8.9% with a total of 251,776 vehicles delivered in China from January to November. As for the Nov. sales performance, the Japanese automaker witnessed its sales in China tumble 42.8% over the year-ago period to 19,179 units, the seventh month in a row that faced YoY sales dwindle in this country. Changan Mazda's year-to-date (YTD) sales reached 151,310 units, declining 7.6% over the same period a year ago when the sales were significantly growing thanks to the launching of the second-generation Mazda CX-5 and soon-to-be-cancelled vehicle purchase tax exemption. The joint venture will launch the Mazda CX-8—a brand-new large-sized 7-seater SUV model on December 7, which is expected to further increase the overall sales. The other joint venture FAW Mazda delivered 100,466 vehicles through November, a YoY decrease of 10.8%. The company has only three models up for sale, including two locally-produced models—the Mazda ATENZA and the Mazda CX-4, as well as an imported model Mazda MX-5 RF. The less abundant product mix may somewhat curb the sales growth.

China’s coal import restrictions spoil the party for Panamaxes - Drewry

The Chinese government’s objective of suppressing coal and lignite imports in November and December 2018 is adversely impacting demand for Panamaxes and thus rates, writes the market research firm Drewry in its last report. Nonetheless, according to Drewry, imports will be supported by winter and high-energy demand in the Q1 2019.

In the first three quarters of 2018, China’s coal imports increased swiftly due to rising demand for power generation. Up to September, the country’s seaborne imports of coal and lignite totalled 169 million tonnes-an increase of 7.6% over the same period of 2017.

In order to control imports, authorities are tightening port restrictions, which are in turn delaying custom clearance. The resultant drop in coal imports to China is detrimental for the employment of Panamaxes, and consequently the dry bulk freight market.

Boeing delivers first 737 from Chinese Factory to Air China

Simple Flying reported that as part of Boeing international expansion plan, they have started opening up factories outside the US in profitable regions to try and meet their incredible demand. One such factory that has started to bear fruit is 737 Completion and Delivery Center in Zhoushan, China, who over the weekend delivered its first 737. This first Beoung 737 MAX 8 has been completed for Air China.

The joint Boeing-COMAC facility has been designed as a completion center, with the planes themselves starting construction thousands of miles away in the US. The planes start as shells months earlier and are made flight ready in Seattle before flying to China for interior fitting, depending on the client.

The factory itself is comprised of a factory floor that can fit 737 planes with various interiors, three paint hangers, and a Boeing delivery center where they can control product quality and hand over the finished jets to clients. The factory has 666,000 sq ft in total and is designed to support the entire 737 MAX family of airplanes, from the long-range MAX 7 to the high-capacity MAX 10.

China is an especially important customer for Boeing, as around 1/3 of all new plane orders for the company end up with Chinese Airlines. Having a location in China that allows them to speed up delivery, and offer maintenance on their latest aircraft will be a boon for the company. Boeing predicts that China will require 7,680 planes over the next 20 years, and wants to be well positioned to meet that demand.

Foto: Xinhua/Duan Ranxingzhi/Hollandse Hoogte

Huawei stopt $2 mrd in cyberveiligheid

Reuters reported that China’s industry ministry on Tuesday said it would remove 11 steel firms from a list of qualified enterprises, effectively banning them from operating, and ordered another 17 to rectify environmental, safety and other breaches or face the same fate. Some of the 11 disqualified mills, including Xuzhou Dongya Iron and Steel and Guangdong Century Tsingshan Nickel Industry Co, were identified by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) as having illegally added new capacity, being under bankruptcy liquidation processes or failing to obtain operating licenses from the local government. The companies have until January 16, 2019, to register any objections to being removed from the list; otherwise, they will be banned from operating after that date.

Meanwhile, 17 companies including Jiangsu Shagang Group a unit of top steel producer China Baowu Group, and HBIS Group’s subsidiary in key steel hub Handan, will be given a limited, though unspecified, time to rectify problems uncovered that relate to safety, environmental and the capacity cutting mission, the MIIT said.

MIIT said “With relentless work on cutting excess steel capacity in recent years, the total production capacity of qualified steel companies has been declining every year.It would regularly revise the list.”

The move comes as China, the world’s biggest steelmaker, aims to streamline its bloated steel sector, as well as improve operating efficiency and environmental standards. In the past three years, China has removed 48 steel mills from the list of qualified enterprises, reducing the total number of registered steelmaking companies to 256, the ministry said in a statement.
