Let`s follow and see! M.v.g. Ronald

NSW Greens approvals would lift coal output by 2 billion tonnes - IPCC Coal News - Published on Thu, 11 Oct 2018 Image Source: Sydney Morning Herald According to calculations by NSW Greens, new coal mines or approved expansion of existing ones have the potential to lift NSW production by almost 2 billion tonnes, potential unleashing an "emissions bomb." The tally includes the new 120 million-tonne Bylong coal mine proposed by Korea's KEPCO group for the Hunter Valley, which secured Department of Planning support. The approval came on the same day the United Nations released a special report recommending a phase-out of coal used in power stations by 2050. It's not yet time to stop expanding, coal industry says. NSW now has 1.881 billion tonnes of coal either recently approved or in the planning pipeline, with 1.1 billion tonnes for expanded mines alone, the Greens estimate. If all the coal were burnt it would emit the equivalent of 5.4 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide, or 10 times Australia's current annual emissions. Mr Jeremy Buckingham, NSW energy spokesman, said that “The 778 million tonnes of coal proposed from new mines [alone] in NSW is a massive carbon emissions bomb poised to wreck our future." Mr Buckingham noted the climate report, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's special 1.5 degree study, had been released in South Korea and had called for the great bulk of fossil fuels to remain untapped if dangerous climate change were to be avoided. He said that “The [NSW] decision recklessly ignores the international scientific consensus that we need to end coal for a chance of keeping climate change impacts at safer levels." Wind turbines a potential health risk - WHO According to new guidelines for Europe that the World Health Organisation has published that Wind power generators can cause health problems if they result in people being exposed to excessive noise levels. Exposure to wind turbines should not exceed 45 decibels during daytime, the Geneva-based UN agency wrote in the guidelines that it developed on behalf of the European Union. In comparison, soft radio music has 50 decibels. Although the recommendations were drawn up for Europe, they are relevant for the rest of the world because they are based on data from various continents, the WHO said. European policymakers should heed the guidance, WHO Europe chief Ms Zsuzsanna Jakab said in a statement that "More than a nuisance, excessive noise is a health risk - contributing to cardiovascular diseases, for example.” German authorities currently recommend a maximum wind turbine noise exposure of 55 decibels during the day. Let op het woord krijgt ! Zelf betaalt de beste man natuurlijk niets.

MIT researchers develop new fusion power plant that can deal with excess heat Researchers at MIT have developed a solution to a big challenge facing the potential development of fusion power plants: how to get rid of excess heat. It was originally thought that heat would cause structural damage to such a plant. However, the new solution was made possible by a new approach to compact fusion reactors, using high-temperature superconducting magnets. This method, MIT said, formed the basis for a massive new research program launched this year at MIT and the creation of an independent startup company to develop the concept. Unlike typical fusion plants, the new design would make it possible to open the device's internal chamber and replace critical components, a capability essential for the newly proposed heat-draining mechanism. Professor Dennis Whyte, director of MIT's Plasma Science and Fusion Center, said the shedding of heat from inside a fusion plant can be compared to the exhaust system in a car. In the new design, the "exhaust pipe" is much longer and wider than is possible in any of today's fusion designs, making it much more effective at shedding the excess heat. But the engineering needed to make that possible required a great deal of complex analysis and the evaluation of many dozens of possible design alternatives. MIT's final design, known as ARC - meaning advanced, robust, and compact - features magnets built in sections so they can be removed for service. This makes it possible to access entire interior and place secondary magnets inside the main coils instead of outside. The scientists said that Just by moving them closer to the plasma in this new arrangement, they can be significantly reduced in size. Mr Whyte explained that "You want to make the 'exhaust pipe' as large as possible, adding that the placement of a secondary magnet inside a primary one makes this possible.” Source : v3.co.uk

Energy of stars: €19bn fusion reactor “to be in place by 2021” All the main elements for the world’s first fusion reactor will be in place by 2021 and “first plasma” should be achieved by 2025, the head of the international team building it in the south of France told journalists Wednesday (10 October). Large tanks needed to hold the facility together had arrived from China and the US, and had been positioned, said Bernard Bigot, head of the 35-nation project to build the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (Iter). One of the tanks for the water cooling system being craned into position (Iter) The Iter tokamak reactor aims to reproduce the hydrogen-to-helium reaction found in stars to produce limitless supplies of clean energy. But first scientists must work out how to confine the charged plasma in an intense magnetic field, because any physical barrier would be destroyed. That means they must create a reaction that produces more energy for consumption than is needed to generate the field that confines it. A preliminary aim is to create and contain a plasma for about 20 minutes, after which work could begin on the commercial exploitation of its experimental findings. By 2021, the components needed to build the 20m-diameter magnetic torus and accelerate the nuclei of hydrogen – which will fuse to form helium – will be on site, Bigot said. The building that will house it will be completed by the spring next year, he added. The project is funded by China, the EU, India, Japan, Russia, South Korea and the US, much of it in the form of donated hardware. The EU is paying around 46% of the €19bn that the project is expected to cost until 2035, although the US Department of Energy has suggested that €56bn might be a more likely estimate for the total construction cost. Top image: Some 800 tonnes of concrete have been used to make the structure that will support the reactor (Iter) Further reading: General Atomics begins work on six-storey magnet for $16bn fusion reactor China to build world’s first fission–fusion reactor “by 2030”www.globalconstructionreview.com/inno...
ScottishPower switches to 100% wind generation Drax Group is buying the portfolio of assets power generation of 2,566 megawatts after making a deal with Iberdrola, Scottish Power’s Spanish parent company. ScottishPower said the sale means it is the UK’s first integrated energy company to completely switch away from coal and gas generation to wind power. The assets include a pumped hydro storage site in Cruachan, run-of-river hydro locations at Galloway and Lanark, four combined gas cycle turbine stations and a biomass-from-waste facility. ScottishPower said the deal comes as the firm is investing GBP 5.2billion in the next four years on renewable energy, enhanced grid networks and smart technology for customers. It has 2,900 MW of offshore wind developments in the pipeline, along with its 714MW East Anglia ONE windfarm and is seeking additional development areas in the next round of leases. Chief executive Mr Keith Anderson said that “This is a pivotal shift for ScottishPower as we realise a long-term ambition. We are leaving carbon generation behind for a renewable future powered by cheaper green energy. We have closed coal, sold gas and built enough wind to power 1.2 million homes. Every working day we are investing over GBP 4 million to deliver cleaner, smarter power for customers. From today we can focus solely on making energy generation cheaper, cutting carbon quicker, building smart grids and connecting customers to renewable electric future for transportation and heating.” Drax, which owns the UK’s biggest power plant in North Yorkshire, has sought to move away from coal ahead of the national deadline of 2025 to phase out the most carbon-intensive form of power generation. The move marks another move away from coal-burning power stations for Drax, which has already converted four of its six generating units to burn wood pellets. Mr Will Gardiner CEO said that “I am excited by the opportunity to acquire this unique and complementary portfolio of flexible, low-carbon and renewable generation assets.“It’s a critical time in the UK power sector. As the system transitions towards renewable technologies, the demand for flexible, secure energy sources is set to grow. We believe there is a compelling logic in our move to add further flexible sources of power to our offering, accelerating our strategic vision to deliver a lower-carbon, lower-cost energy future for the UK.” He added that “This acquisition makes great financial and strategic sense, delivering material value to our shareholders through long-term earnings and attractive returns. We are combining our existing operational expertise with the specialist technical skills of our new colleagues and I am looking forward to what we can achieve together.” Source : Strategic Research Institute
Groet, Jonas
EU clears 200 million euros in French renewable energy state aid Power News - Published on Wed, 24 Oct 2018 Reuters reported that European Union's competition watchdog approved on Monday 200 million euros worth of state aid to support electricity production from renewable sources for self-consumption in France until 2020. The European Commission said the French government's support programme would contribute to add 490 megawatts of new capacity and was available for small installations. The selected installations would receive a premium on top of the market price over 10 years. Margrethe Vestager, the bloc's top competition official said that "The scheme will stimulate competition between renewable energy sources for self-suppliers and will further increase the share of renewables in France's energy mix.” Source : Reuters

SkanGas delivered LBG for first time to Finland Reuters reported that SkanGas, a Norwegian-based unit of Finland's state-owned Gasum, has delivered liquefied biogas (LBG) to two Finnish customers for the first time. LBG, a renewable version of liquefied natural gas (LNG), is produced from organic waste and can reduce the carbon footprint of companies using it, said SkanGas, which had previously only delivered the product to one Swedish and one Norwegian buyer. While LBG is still considered an immature market and thus costlier than many alternatives, it is also part of a growing trend of bioenergy consumption. The company said in a statement that "We delivered liquefied biogas for the first time to Nornickel Harjavalta and STEP Oy. LNG and liquefied biogas can be delivered with the same equipment and the transition to liquefied biogas can be achieved without additional investment." STEP, an acronym for Finnish Industrial Energy Services, offers sustainable energy solutions for industrial customers and is a joint venture owned by Pori Energia and Veolia. Source : Reuters
