Héél erg interessant! Chinese scientists make breakthrough in super steel Xinhua reported that Chinese scientists have developed a super steel that has a high level of both strength and ductility, a breakthrough that may have a wide variety of industrial applications. Furthermore, its material cost is just one-fifth of that of the steel used in the current aerospace and defence applications. Strength and ductility are desirable properties of metallic materials for wide-ranging applications, but increasing strength often leads to the decrease in ductility, which is known as the strength-ductility trade-off. A Hong Kong-Beijing-Taiwan mechanical engineering team led by Huang Mingxin from the University of Hong Kong adopted a new manufacturing technique called deformed and partitioned (D&P) to addressed the problem. The team said "Steels have been the most widely used metallic materials in the history of mankind and can be produced with much higher efficiency than any other metallic materials. Therefore developing a strong and ductile breakthrough steel has been a long quest since the beginning of Iron Age in mankind history." The team explained that it is very difficult to further improve the ductility of metallic materials when their yield strength is beyond two Gigapascal (GPa). Now, they made "a successful attempt in realizing the above dream" as the newly developed method yields a "breakthrough steel" that has the "unprecedented" yield strength of 2.2 GPa and uniform elongation of 16 percent. The developed D&P steel demonstrated the best combination of yield strength and uniform elongation among all existing high-strength metallic materials. In particular, the uniform elongation of the developed D&P steel is much higher than that of metallic materials with yield strength beyond 2.0 GPa. According to the team, the "breakthrough steel" belongs to the system of so-called medium manganese steel that contains 10 percent manganese, 0.47 percent carbon, 2.0 percent aluminium and 0.7 percent vanadium. Another advantage is that this steel can be developed using conventional industrial processing routes, including warm rolling, cold rolling and annealing. Source : Xinhua
China streamlining helping Indian aluminium producers Bloomberg Quint reported that as the driver of commodity prices across geographies, China’s efforts to streamline processes at its bloated aluminium industry is helping metal companies back home and elsewhere. Hindalco Industries Ltd has climbed 44% on the S&P BSE Metal Index. The gain for Vedanta Ltd. has been 33%, while state-run National Aluminium Company Ltd has had a muted growth of nearly 4%. Aluminium accounts for nearly half the revenue of Hindalco and NALCO, and a little less than one-third of Vedanta. Mr Jatin Damani deputy vice president of Kotak Securities said that this correlation, is the reason for Hindalco's stock performance. Global deficit and greater demand from China has certainly been helpful in the movement of commodity prices. Being the biggest consumer of commodities, any attempts to rationalise production in China will have an effect on prices at global levels. Mr David Lennox, Resource Analyst, Fat Prophets said that “Not only are they closing down inefficient capacities, they are also out of sufficient processing facility.” This deficit in supply is keeping aluminium prices in China nudged towards demand. He said that “Therefore, the commodity's price is rising driven by higher demand from China.” Mr Lennox said China has been the biggest player in the market for the past five years, influencing the global market and prices. China's story has broken the nexus between global growth and rising commodity prices as the latter has become more China-centric. Mr Lennox said that another factor that is moving commodity prices is the position of the US dollar. The greenback currency has been weak this year although he expects the dollar to stay where it is. “In the near term, direction of US dollar will be opposite to that of commodity prices.” Source : Bloomberg Quint

Facebook is sinds 2009 verboden in China.

Chinese premier resolves to boost efforts for supply side reforms in steel sector China Daily reported that China will press ahead with supply side structural reform with more effort focusing on reining in excessive production capacity, reducing corporate costs and improving the environment for innovation. The cutting of surplus production capacity will be prioritized, with special focus on weeding out substandard steel production. Corporate costs will be trimmed by applying standards and supervision to fees levied by sectoral associations and similar organizations. The decision was made at a State Council executive meeting chaired by Premier Li Keqiang on Wednesday, after hearing a report on the fourth round of State Council nationwide inspections. The inspection, conducted by the State Council General Office between June and August, is aimed at ensuring that tasks put forward by the central economic work conference and the Government Work Report are implemented in full. The inspection found that the ongoing supply-side structural reform is progressing in a steady manner as the economic structure keeps optimizing. The inspection also found problems such as excessive production capacity cuts in arrears, deficiencies in business environments, and bottlenecks in the transformation of R&D findings to products. Mr Li said "We need to give full play to inspection in its role of spurring implementation and development, to break the bottlenecks in the last mile of policy implementation, clearing all hurdles in the way of various policies. The problems found in the inspection process should be addressed as early as possible, with results to be delivered for problems such as the resurgence of shut down production capacity, excessive fees levied on enterprises, obstacles to foreign investment and long delays for approvals of some investment programs.” Source : China Daily
Jiangsu Shagang will take Dongbei Special Steel Group under its wings Nikkei reported that private-sector steelmaker Jiangsu Shagang will take Dongbei Special Steel Group under its wing, nearly a year after the state-backed company filed for bankruptcy. An investment firm affiliated with Jiangsu Shagang will acquire a 43% stake in Dongbei Special Steel for CNY 4.46 billion (USD 680 million). A degree of government influence over Dongbei Special Steel will remain, since Benxi Steel Group, another state-owned steelmaker, will also take an interest worth CNY 1.03 billion. Dongbei Special Steel was established as a steelmaker affiliated with the Liaoning provincial government. The company's finances deteriorated as China's economic growth slowed. It defaulted on its debt nine times last year before finally going belly up in October. The provincial government apparently delayed the bankruptcy process out of concern for its impact on the regional economy. Dongbei Special Steel was known as a leading Chinese "zombie" enterprise that was kept alive even though it was bleeding money. Beijing has pledged to deal with these "zombie" companies, particularly in the steel and coal industries, which are saddled with excess production capacities. Source : Nikkei
Rare earths price defying gravity Published on Fri, 15 Sep 2017 China Daily reported that the price of rare earths may fluctuate at high levels in the next months, According to a research note from China Merchants Securities, despite the government's efforts to curb financial speculation, supervise environmental protection and prohibit illegal mining, there is still strong demand in the market. With the supply of rare earths - especially light rare earths - unable to meet short-term demand, prices still have room to rise. By Sept 7, the average price of praseodymium-neodymium oxide, the iconic rare earth product, rose to 520,000 yuan (USD 80,280) per metric tonne, a 6.1% increase over the price only a week ago, and double the price at this time last year, according to Baiinfo.com, a raw material information provider.
Chinese Hebei vows coal curbs ahead of winter smog war Reuters quoted Hebei, China’s smoggiest province, as saying that it would ensure it meets its targets to replace coal with natural gas, while accelerating efforts to achieve politically crucial 2017 air quality targets. The local government said on its official website that it would ensure as many as 1.8 million households completed the switch to gas from coal for fuel and heating by the end of next month, despite concerns in the province that the transition was proving too costly and difficult. The step is part of efforts to cut annual provincial coal consumption by more than 6 million tonnes. Hebei, which surrounds the capital Beijing, is on the frontline of a “war on pollution” launched in 2014. It plans to wage an “iron-fisted” campaign against smog this winter, provincial governor Xu Qin said this week. As part of a central government push to fight smog this winter, Hebei plans to reduce small breathable smog particles known as PM2.5 by 15 percent from October 2017 to March 2018, but some major cities will be forced to make even deeper cuts. Tangshan, China’s top steel producing city, is under pressure to slash PM2.5 averages by more than 22 percent over the six months. It has promised to shut down polluting sectors like ceramics, cement and brickmaking once China’s winter heating systems are switched on in November. Tangshan produces 90 million tonnes of crude steel annually, and is also under orders to cut production of the alloy by half once heating begins. However, Hebei will also impose emergency restrictions on big polluters and curb the production and transportation of raw materials during smog build-ups, Yin Guangping, vice-head of the Hebei Environmental Protection Bureau, said Thursday. Inspectors have been visiting sites across the region to ensure that small “scattered” sources of pollution are “rectified”. They have also been cracking down on “false reporting” by enterprises pretending to comply with tough new standards. Source : Reuters
South Africa companies to seek mining opportunities in China IOL reported that South Africa minister of trade and industry, Mr Rob Davies said on September 15th 2017 that China has agreed to support South Africa and Africa's initiatives of industrialisation and mineral beneficiation as the country embarks on a drive to better exploit its mineral resources. Mr Davies in a statement said that South Africa has set out to achieve this by developing its manufacturing industry, and that China will have a significant role to play in this initiative. Mr Davies said that "Following undertakings of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement (CSPA) signed between South Africa and China, and also the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), China agreed to support South Africa and Africa’s initiatives of industrialisation and mineral beneficiation.” He said that "The long-term view is that South Africa’s mineral endowment could catalyse wider economic development. By this we mean that South Africa is intent on doing much more to develop its manufacturing industry, based on its considerable mineral resources. This comes as the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) will lead a group of South African companies to the 17th Annual China Mining Congress and Expo in China from next weekend. Mr Davies further said that the dti was affording South Africa companies an opportunity to network with the world's key policy makers and government officials, to gain insightful market information, to meet with potential partners and to generate business opportunities all in one place. The Expo is one of the world's largest mineral investment, cooperation and trading platforms that covers the whole value-chain. This includes mining services, geological surveying, exploration development, mining rights and minerals trading, mining investment and financing, smelting and processing, technique and equipment. Davies said South Africa's participation in the Expo was a result of South Africa and China having developed strong bilateral relations during the past decade, sparked primarily by the establishment of the BRICS Bloc. S&P verlaagt kredietwaardigheid China Outlook stabiel.
Henan shuts 70,000 tonnes of aluminium smelting capacity Business China News reported that according to official statements, the capacity closed in the People’s Republic of China’s Henan province will be available for transfer to aluminium smelting operations outside the province. A notice released by The Commission of Industry and Information Technology of Henan Province alerted the industry Wednesday that 70 thousand tonnes per annum has been shuttered in the central province, and that the tonnage output is now up for sale to smelters who still have room under their individual capacity allowances and provincial capacity cap. The commission’s documentation stated that the operations giving up the capacity in question were Sanmenxia Tianyuan (30 thousand metric tons per annum), Qinyang Qin‘ao (20 thousand metric tons per annum), and Xichuan Aluminium (20 thousand metric tons per annum). According to the statement, the shuttered capacity was obsolete. The closing and transfer of capacity announced yesterday is but part of a wider push by the state to alleviate air pollution levels in the area. With a population topping 94 million, Henan is among China’s most heavily- and densely-populated provinces and, as the area’s economy relies largely upon high-pollution heavy industry, the government has been forced to find ways to balance economic and environmental interests.
