MOL Inks LoI with GTLK for FSU Projects in Kamchatka & Murmansk By Strategic Research Institute on Sep 07, 2021 10:00 am Mitsui OSK Lines Ltd announced that it has signed a Letter of Intent with Public Joint-Stock Company State Transport Leasing Company GTLK for the potential acquisition of total 49% shares of the Floating Storage Unit owner companies, which are currently 100% owned by GTLK, in relation to the LNG transshipment projects in Kamchatka and Murmansk. The above-mentioned FSU owner companies have earlier entered into bareboat charter agreements with Arctic Transshipment LLC, joint venture of JSC NOVATEK and TotalEnergies SE, that will provide transshipment services to NOVATEK's LNG-projects by reloading LNG cargoes from ice-class LNG carriers (Note 3) to conventional LNG carriers. Two FSUs with a world largest storage capacity of about 360,000m3 will be placed at each of Bechevinskaya Bay in the Kamchatka Territory and Ura Bay at Murmansk. The two FSUs are currently being constructed at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Geoje, Korea). Once the construction is completed, the FSUs will be towed to Kamchatka and Murmansk to be placed at each of their sites. MOL have been supporting the construction from the technical and engineering perspective, in particular the basic design, plan approval and site supervision works. By transporting LNG via Northern Sea Route and by transshipping at Kamchatka and Murmansk, it is expected to reduce voyage costs and greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, securing LNG at a location close to a point of consumption is believed to increase security and reliability of energy supply. Furthermore, ensuring steady access to energy resources in the Russian Arctic region should contribute to stable energy supply to Japan. MOL will contribute to stable LNG transportation by providing a wide variety of services, from icebreaking LNG carriers which transport LNG from loading ports in Russian Arctic to above-mentioned LNG transshipment terminals, and to conventional LNG carriers which deliver LNG from the transshipment terminals to discharging ports.
Kawasaki Receives Order for LPG-fueled LPG/LAG Carrier By Strategic Research Institute on Sep 09, 2021 10:00 am Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd announced that it has concluded a shipbuilding contract for a new 86,700 m3 liquefied petroleum gas and liquefied ammonia gas carrier powered by LPG fuel for ENEOS Ocean Corporation. The vessel is equipped with separate cargo tanks designed to carry LPG and LAG at the same time. This contract represents the 72nd LPG carrier and 9th LPG-fueled LPG carrier to be constructed by Kawasaki, and their second LPG/LAG carrier. Kawasaki plans to complete the construction of the vessel at its Sakaide Works in 2023. The advantage of this dual-purpose vessel is its capability to simultaneously carry LPG, which is already used as a low-carbon energy source, and LAG, a new fuel contributing to the establishment of a decarbonized society. Another feature is the greater capacity of the cargo tanks as compared to conventional carriers, which was achieved without significantly changing the vessel’s length, breadth, or other main specifications. Fueled by low-sulfur fuel oil and LPG (which significantly reduces the emission volumes of sulfur oxides [SOx], CO2, and other pollutants in the exhaust gases as compared to marine fuel oil), the vessel meets SOx emission standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO)*1, as well as the IMO’s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI)*2 Phase 3 regulations, which are scheduled to adopt stricter CO2 emission standards in 2022. To meet environmental standards being tightened globally, and to implement action plans set forth in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations and other initiatives, Kawasaki plans to develop and build more LPG-fueled LPG carriers and other commercial vessels that meet environmental standards, as well as to develop other eco-friendly marine technologies, to contribute to the establishment of a low-carbon/decarbonized society. These products include vessels for transporting liquefied hydrogen, considered to be the next-generation energy source. Design for Ammonia Fuel Ready LNG Fueled Vessel Launched Strategic Research Institute Published on : 15 Sep, 2021, 6:30 am Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, MTI Co Ltd and Elomatic Oy, a Finnish maritime consulting and engineering firm, launched the development of a concept design for “Ammonia-fuel Ready LNG-Fueled Vessel” ARLFV, which covers the transition to future marine fuel. The NYK Group and Elomatic launched the development of a concept design for “Ammonia-fuel Ready LNG-Fueled Vessel”, which can be converted to a ship using ammonia as a marine fuel once its supply is ready. ARLFV is set as a “Next Bridge Solution” to cover the transition of the marine fuel from LNG to ammonia. The development of a concept design is being conducted by the NYK Group and Elomatic between September 2021 and January 2022 to identify and explore challenges to the actual design and construction of ARLFV. The results of development will be released in a video with accompanying 3D models in January 2022 at the time of the project’s completion. Currently, NYK and MTI promote upgrading its fleet via the use of LNG, a low-carbon marine fuel, to achieve NYK’s mid- and long-term environmental targets. The LNG-fueled vessel is set as a bridge solution to future marine fuel. The NYK Group also participates in activities such as the Project for Safe Use of Ammonia as Marine Fuel that aim at launching zero-emission ships that run on such low-environmental-load marine fuels as ammonia or hydrogen in future.
LNG Fuelled Vessels Approaching 30% of Orders Strategic Research Institute Published on : 17 Sep, 2021, 6:30 am Industry coalition SEA-LNG recognises significant growth in LNG-fuelled vessel orders in 2021. According to the latest report from Clarksons, LNG-fuelled vessel orders are approaching 30% of Gross Tonnage on order, representing a substantial part of shipping’s overall capacity when these vessels are delivered. 2021 has been a banner year for new LNG dual-fuel vessel construction contracts as reported by DNV and others. This trend is expected to continue. Major deep-sea sectors of the maritime industry are embracing LNG in efforts to reduce both local and global emissions, as LNG-fuelled vessels are one of the only options today that meet the reduced emissions required of environmental finance. It is anticipated that over 90% of the new Pure Car and Truck Carriers that will enter the market in the coming years will be LNG dual fuel. Likewise, containership owners and operators are moving to LNG-fuelled tonnage, with orders for LNG-fuelled liners increasing five-fold since January 2020. Tankers and bulkers are also following suit, with increases of seven-fold and two-fold respectively over the 18-month period. Owners and operators of deep-sea vessels continue to recognise that LNG is available now, it is proven safe, reduces SOx and particulates to negligible levels, NOx by up to 85%, and GHG emissions by up to 23%. It can also achieve the IMO’s 2030 target of reducing CO2 emissions by 40% compared to 2008 by the use of bio-LNG products as a drop in fuel. This transition to bio-LNG, and eventually synthetic LNG, will enable the industry to meet the IMO 2050 targets. This process utilises established LNG infrastructure without investing in new and costly infrastructure around the globe for unproven fuels.

Bureau Veritas Approves Very Large Gas Carriers Design Strategic Research Institute Published on : 29 Sep, 2021, 6:30 am The ‘Panda 93 P’ VLGC design has been developed by Jiangnan Shipyard, a leading Chinese gas carrier builder in the China State Shipbuilding Corporation. Sinogas, the Singapore-based gas shipowner has placed a firm order for two of the 93,000 cubic-metre (cbm) VLGCs, with options for three more vessels. On delivery, these ships will be the largest VLGCs in the world and they will be powered by liquefied petroleum gas. The delivery of these gas carriers, principally dedicated to the carriage of LPG, is scheduled for the first half of 2023 and will mark a further technological leap for Jiangnan in its development of new gas carrier concepts in long-term collaboration with Bureau Veritas. Jiangnan Shipyard has now completed a significant number of projects in cooperation with BV during the last two decades – and most notably for gas carriers. The Sinogas order is a significant milestone for both shipyard and class society on the journey to a decarbonized industry. Once in operation, the new design will reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 32% less in comparison with the previous generation of 84,000 cbm VLGCs powered by low-sulfur fuel oil. This dramatic reduction reflects the highly optimized design and economies of scale, as well as the use of LPG as fuel. The design is an evolution of Jiangnan’s “Panda” Series of VLGCs with optimized hull-form to allow increased cargo capacity without significant increases in fuel consumption. The design incorporates two deck-mounted LPG fuel tanks, enabling LPG-fuelled operations when carrying non-LPG cargo. This achievement has been realized by the Jiangnan team’s use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for hull line optimization. Jiangnan also adopted smart shipbuilding techniques with the use of digital technology, 3D digital mock-ups, 3D model submission and production planning, erection simulation and lifecycle management.
