    The number of subscribers to OnBoard Diagnostics (OBD) aftermarket telematics solutions is expected to increase from 9.5 million in 2014 to 117.8 million in 2019.

    “OBD-dongle telematics devices (edit: zoals die in persbericht onderaan) are gaining momentum in North America and Europe in segments such as UBI, fleet management, and consumer telematics. Their plug-and-play characteristics, low cost and flexibility for a range of applications including diagnostics and maintenance, location tracking and trip logging, driving behavior monitoring, and even in-car Wi-Fi make them a great fit for aftermarket telematics players in a still largely underpenetrated market.

    Much of the marketing push is led by carriers such as Vodafone, Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T leveraging their online and retail channel power combined with their customer-facing support expertise while partnering with OBD device vendors and service providers such as Audiovox, Delphi, and CalAmp,” says VP and practice director Dominique Bonte.

    North America and Europe are the leading regions because OBD vehicle ports are mandatory combined with the advanced state of their telematics markets. However, beyond the 2019 forecast horizon, the window of opportunity for OBD-dongles will gradually close as open factory-installed OEM telematics becomes more widespread.

    OBD solutions will also face competition from aftermarket telematics solutions based on smartphones connecting directly to the vehicle OBD port via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi adapters.

    Even standalone smartphone applications are starting to be explored for applications such as UBI and driver behavior monitoring of truck drivers leveraging the built-in GPS, accelerometer, and connectivity.

    However, the main weakness of OBD solutions is their closed nature, both from a vehicle port perspective with car OEMs not exposing all vehicle data in a standard format and from a device perspective lacking open APIs preventing third party developers from creating a rich set of applications to extend functionality.     New TomTom device enables easy access to vehicle information via smartphone

    ~ New interface opens up opportunities to partners to create smarter driving apps ~

    September 11, 2013 – TomTom Business Solutions will launch a new device to enable a smartphone to connect to real-time vehicle and driving information. The TomTom LINK 100 dongle allows third-parties to create a wide range of new mobile applications that make use of vehicle information and driver usage.

    The easy to install TomTom LINK 100 logs vehicle diagnostic information, such as engine rpm, load and temperature, directly from the on-board diagnostic port. The integrated 3D accelerometer logs driving behavioural data. By providing access to real-time information the LINK 100 will enable the automotive, leasing, insurance and roadside assistance industries to create innovative products that allow the end-user to benefit from connected car technology.

    "This innovation opens up a wealth of possibilities for development of smartphone apps allowing motorists and businesses alike to benefit from ready availability of vehicle data," said Thomas Schmidt, Managing Director, TomTom Business Solutions.

    The LINK 100, which also offers accident detection and crash logs, is expected to aid the evolution of usage-based insurance products and solutions designed to help the leasing industry reduce risk.

    For car manufacturers and dealerships, it will mean the ability to offer ongoing maintenance and technical services, based on information gathered from the vehicle.

    Drivers, meanwhile, will be able to use smartphone apps to gain a snapshot of their driving performance for each trip in order to help them to identify where improvement is necessary. Driver location privacy is maintained as the device does not incorporate GPS or reporting on vehicle location.

    "The possibilities offered by the connected vehicle are virtually limitless," added Thomas. "Roadside assistance companies, for example, could use the available data to ensure the most appropriate responder is sent out to each incident based on the exact nature of the breakdown but any number of different industries may imagine alternative uses for the wealth of available data."

    The product will be made available before the end of the year.

    Ik heb niet helemaal scherp in hoeverre dit mijn beeld over de koers van TomTom als bedrijf, of mijn idee over de koers van TomTom op de beurs ook maar enigszins kan prikkelen.
    RIP TomTom forum waar nog wel eens iets bijzonders te lezen viel.

    Er valt genoeg bijzonders te lezen.
    Het is bijna cabaret hier en hoe sneu dan ook voor de serieuze posters, ik lees het op elkaar inhakken met een glimlach.

    Justin,dank voor je openingsbericht en blijf actief!.

    Er zijn hier medeposters ,die vermoedens en feiten door elkaar halen en ik ben dan iemand die graag de feiten leest.Maar al die feiten blijven uit.

    Ik heb me bij meneer rookgordijn aangemeld destijds ,om al die vermoedens klip en klaar op de forumtafel te krijgen en dat deze vermoedens ontzenuwd gaan worden of niet.

    Verder is geduld en vertrouwen een schone zaak.En dat vertrouwen heb ik.

    De dagkoersen volgen doen we allemaal,maar om daar je opinie over het bedrijf op los te laten,getuigt van kortzichtigheid.

    De OBD-bus in auto's kan interessante informatie geven voor navigatie- en fleetmanagement toepassingen van andere partijen (zoal TT of smartphone-leveranciers). Maar autofabrikanten zijn huiverig om al hun in-car geheimen zo maar op straat te gooien.
    Sommige smartphone-fabrikanten zijn eigenwijs (hoe heet die ene grote club ook al weer?), en hebben moeite met een universele interface op dit gebied (google maar even op API en MirrorLink).
    Het betekent even een patstelling, al is Samsung bij dit onderwerp geloof ik vooruitstrevender dan Apple.

    Enfin, TT biedt hier een overbrugging, zij het vooralsnog alleen voor de BusSol-markt, als ik het goed begrijp. Hoe dan ook, TT zit er bovenop en werkt technisch gezien in het brandpunt van de ontwikkelingen.

    Voor mensen 'van wie het Engels niet zo goed is' (of die geen geduld hebben om de lange lappen tekst onder de tabbladen van de link te lezen):

    Het gaat om doorgegeven GPS-posities van auto's die zeg 10-20m te ver links of rechts rijden van de normale rijbaan. Dat kan duiden op fouten in de map, maar veel waarschijnlijker is dat ze gebruik maken van een parallelle rijbaan of de vluchtstrook. En dat kan weer duiden op een gedeeltelijke (rijstrook-)blokkade door ongeval of wegwerkzaamheden, vooral als het relatief veel auto's betreft.

    Het patent gaat erover dat soort situaties goed te diagnosteren. Dat komt niet alleen de maps ten goede, maar ook en vooral TT's 'traffic'.

    PS. Het patent komt van de zoveelste researchclub van TT in Dld, dus niet alles zit in Amsterdam.
    Niet alleen Hildesheim (daar schreef ik hier een paar weken geleden al iets over), maar nu ook een patent uit Leipzig. In Berlijn zit ook nog wat?
    Laat TT maar schuiven met de Duitse auto-industrie...
