Chinese steel output may fall from June on power cuts - Platou RS Platou Markets AS said that steel production in China may fall from June 2011 as the world's biggest producer of the metal rations power, forcing mills to curb output. The state controlled company said in a statement that regions served by the State Grid Corporation of China, the nation’s dominant power distributor, may face a shortfall of 30 gigawatts this summer. It will further ration supplies in the summer as a drought looms over what may be the country’s worst electricity shortage on record. Mr Frode Morkedal, a Platou analyst in Oslo, said that "Thousands of small mills will face the challenge of power shortages because the government will first guarantee electricity to residential users." He added that steel production in the country may peak this month and start to drop from June 2011. According to a Deutsche Bank AG report on May 20th 2011, the shortage may reach 35 gigawatts or 3.7% of the country's capacity in 2010. 35 gigawatts is enough to supply 35 million US households on average. China's dry spell and reduced hydropower output are intensifying an electricity shortage caused by a combination of rising demand and reduced generation capacity. Some power plants have cut production or even shut, crippled by increased coal prices and government caps on electricity tariffs. According to data from industry researcher IHS McCloskey, based in Petersfield, coal prices at China's Qinhuangdao port have increased about 15% in 2011. According to the World Steel Association, China made about 47% of the world's crude steel in April 2011. In the first four months of 2011, it produced 232.6 million tonnes of steel, up by 9.1% YoY. Jammer dat dit niet naar AM is gegaan: TATA Steel wins supply pipe supply deal from Subsea 7 It is reported that Subsea 7 has awarded TATA Steel contracts valued at around USD 32 million to provide 43 kilometers of pipe for three North Sea pipeline installation projects. These include BP's Andrew Area and Apache’s Bacchus developments. TATA's Hartlepool plant will supply about 17,000 tonnes of steel to Subsea 7's pipeline bundle fabrication site in Wick in northern Scotland. The 84 inches pipe mill at Hartlepool will manufacture the large OD double submerged-arc welded carrier pipe for the bundles. TATA Steel said that close control during the three roll bend manufacture process ensures pipe is supplied to tight OD and wall thickness tolerances, providing accurate control over the final weight of the carrier pipe and bundle system. The manufacturer will also supply small OD diameter sleeve pipe, produced in its high frequency induction 20 inches mill. This process allows for tight control over dimensional tolerances, apparently critical to the bundle's overall weight for tow-out and installation. TATA will produce 27 meters lengths of pipe, manufactured from three 9 meters lengths girth welded together, with a glass flake epoxy coating. All loads will be transported by rail and road from Hartlepool to Subsea 7’s pipeline bundle fabrication site at Wick. (Sourced from www.offshore-mag.com)

US steelmakers fight price declines The Street reported that three big steelmakers have pushed in recent days to staunch a slide in North American steel prices. The declines come after prices for the metal rocketed from November through early spring this year, as mills successfully passed along the higher cost of raw materials to their customers. Global prices for iron ore, coking coal and scrap metal had all risen sharply over the course of 2010, largely drive by fierce demand from China, by far the world's most prolific steel producing nation. Ms Bridget Freas, a steel industry equities analyst at Morningstar in Chicago, said that but since April 2011, the North American price of flat rolled steel, the benchmark product, has decreased from a high of USD 800 a tonne to around USD 780 a tonne as of this week. She attributes the decline partly to supply chain shortages that have worked themselves out. She added that "It makes sense that we've seen a correction to what had been quite a significant increase." Still, the declines were sharp enough to motivate AK Steel, the US mills of Russian owned Severstal and, most recently, Nucor to announce price hikes of about USD 40 a tonne. It remains to be seen, analysts say, whether those hikes will stick. Buyers will likely tell steelmakers that demand remains weak. Meanwhile, analysts expect steelmakers to report strong second quarter results. But all eyes will focus on what companies will say about the third quarter. A choppy economic recovery plus volatile steel and raw materials prices has clouded the outlook for the second half of the year. In light pre holiday trading, metals and mining stocks were mostly in the green. US Steel shares were rising 1% to USD 45.77, down from the 52 week high of about USD 64, reached in February along with shares in the rest of the commodities linked sectors. CISA sees Chinese crude steel demand at 750 million tonnes by 2015 China Iron and Steel Association predicted that the country's annual demand for crude steel will rise to between 670 million tonnes and 750 million tonnes in 2015. The figures are 11.8% and 25.1% higher compared with the 2010 level. Mr Luo Bingsheng deputy chief of CISA at a forum said “The prediction based on an assumption that China's economy will register an annual growth rate between 8% and 9% during the 12th Five year Plan period (2011-2015).” (Sourced from Xinhua)
