    Bij Shire zat hij van 2007 tot 2014. Het meest opmerkelijke van de loopbaan bij Shire vind ik dat hij eindigde daar waar hij begonnen was in 2007, namelijk als Sr. Director Non-clinical Development. Geen grote stappen meer gemaakt dus. Misschien dat hij daarom wegging?
    Daarna werd hij vanaf juni 2014 CSO bij BBB dat dus een half jaar later failliet ging.

    to-BBB Announces Successful €10 Million Financing

    Leiden, the Netherlands, 30 June 2014 – to-BBB, a biotechnology company developing novel treatments for devastating brain diseases, today announced the successful finalization of a round C financing of €10 million with new and existing investors. The company also announced the appointment of Dr. Pericles (Perry) Calias as Senior Vice President Translational Medicine and the appointment of Leonard Kruimer as interim CEO to replace Willem van Weperen, who accepted a career opportunity outside the company.

    Leonard Kruimer, CFO, commented: “The new investment is a clear vote of confidence in our technology, development programs and the continued development of the company. This current infusion of funds will allow us to strengthen our developmental efforts while expanding our clinical programs.”

    Appointment Dr. Pericles Calias
    Dr. Pericles Calias has recently joined to-BBB as Senior Vice President Translational Medicine. As such, he will be responsible for expanding and accelerating the development of our pre-clinical portfolio. Dr. Calias will coordinate the early regulatory, non-clinical, manufacturing and quality efforts as to-BBB continues its clinical development programs.
    Prior to joining to-BBB, Pericles Calias led the development of the CNS protein replacement programs at Shire. During his seven-year tenure there, he authored over 20 patents and held various leadership roles throughout the research and development organization. He also led the research efforts for several US and EU regulatory filings for various marketed products. Prior to Shire, Dr. Calias was part of the founding teams for two ocular companies, Eyetech and Eyegate Pharmaceutical. He will be based in Boston, where he will further strengthen to-BBB’s US presence.

    Samenwerking sterke stimulans voor innovatie van medische biotechnologie in Nederland

    Genzyme en het Nederlandse biotechnologiebedrijf to-BBB hebben elkaar gevonden in een samenwerking, die een belangrijke stimulering betekent van innovatie in de Nederlandse medische biotechnologie. De twee bedrijven gaan gezamenlijk onderzoeken of to-BBB’s gepatenteerde platformtechnologie veilig kan worden gebruikt in combinatie met biotechnologische medicijnen bij neurodegeneratieve ziekten.

    Biotechnologische medicijnen, zoals peptiden, enzymen en antilichamen, hebben zich de laatste jaren bewezen als belangrijke behandelingen in de medische wereld. Deze geavanceerde medicijnen kunnen echter niet gemakkelijk de bloed-hersen barrière passeren, met als gevolg dat verschillende hersenaandoeningen niet kunnen worden behandeld.

    To-BBB’s gepatenteerde platformtechnologie is ontwikkeld om verschillende medicijnen te verpakken in deeltjes die de bloed-hersen barrière kunnen passeren. Het bedrijf heeft dit concept aangetoond bij verschillende ziektemodellen en Genzyme gaat dit mechanisme nu onderzoeken bij zijn ziektemodellen.

    Naast het feit dat deze samenwerking uiteindelijk moet leiden tot de behandeling van patiënten met hersenaandoeningen met biotechnologische medicijnen, is deze samenwerking ook in innovatief opzicht voor Nederland belangrijk. “Door te investeren in een Nederlandse start-up, stimuleert Genzyme medische innovatie in Nederland”, zegt mevrouw D. van den Berg, directeur van Genzyme Nederland.

    Het bedrijf to-BBB, een spin-off van de universiteit van Leiden, werkt aan verbeterde afgifte van medicijnen over de bloed-hersen barrière. De onderneming ontwikkelt innovatieve behandelingen voor hersenaandoeningen door het combineren van bestaande medicijnen met een gepatenteerde platformtechnologie. De visie van het bedrijf is dat de toekomst van momenteel onbehandelbare, ernstige hersenziekten ligt in het veilig verbeteren van het transport van medicijnen over de bloed-hersen barrière.

    BBB is failliet en de IP wordt geveild binnenkort. Dus van samengaan is geen sprake en de IP is een veel te ver van mijn bed show voor Pharming.
