According to several sources, U.S.-based INRIX, wich supplies real-time traffic data internationally decided to reorganize its European team. Stuart Marks and Hans-Hendrik Puvogel, two well known and well regarded executives in the in-car infotainment industry are leaving the company this summer.
Stuart Marks was the Chief Executive Officer at Manchester-based ITIS Holdings a company that was acquired by Inrix last summer. Hans Hendrick Puvogel was the general manager for Inrix in Europe since the summer of 2008 and reporting to Stuart Marks since the acquisition. Puvogel had been instrumental in the building of Inrix in Europe before the acquisition of UK-based ITIS.
Coincidentally, David Levine, who was with ITIS since 2008, and after the acquisition became business development director for Inrix in Europe, also left the company recently to join Vodafone in a M2M automotive business development role.
Inrix was not willing to comment on these news at the time of publishing. However it seems these departures are in line with the strategy of Inrix to reorganize itself into vertical markets (automotive, mobile, government, fleet, internet and media) rather than horizontal, geography-based entities.
This new strategy started to shape earlier this year as Inrix hired U.S. based Andreas Hecht to head their automotive division and moved Bill Schwebel from senior vice president of marketing and planning to senior vice president mobile solutions.
European Challenge It will have to be seen if that type of verticalized organization will be successfully meeting the European challenges of Inrix.
The company is increasingly facing competition from Netherlands-based TomTom which has been pushing for more than a year the sale of its traffic service - HD Traffic - to third parties, beyond their own navigation products. TomTom not only has
a good product but also a strong brand that is making inroads in the automotive industry with customers such as Renault, Fiat or Mazda. Most recently industry sources indicate that TomTom has won a business deal from Mercedes-Benz that include traffic services.
TomTom has also been successful in the public sector, especially in Europe with several local deals announced since the beginning of the year.
