Offshore driller Seadrill (NYSE: SDRL ) has been active this year. They completed the purchase of Scorpion offshore this past spring, and speculation that something new is in the works could escalate now that the company has refreshed its war chest with a $350-million bond offering completed at the end of September.

On 02/07/11, Ensco PLC (NYSE: ESV) announced a definitive merger agreement to acquire Pride International (NYSE: PDE) for $7.3bn in cash and stock. Consolidation in the offshore drilling & services sector has been expected after the Macondo well incident in the Gulf of Mexico as oil E&P companies will require a higher duty of care for their exploration activities to conform to new drilling regulatory requirements.

SDRL - Seadrill completes placement of NOK1,250 million unsecured bond issue
Hamilton, Bermuda, January 31, 2012 - Seadrill has successfully completed a NOK1,250 million senior unsecured bond issue with maturity date February 13, 2014. Settlement date is set to be February 13, 2012. An application will be made for the bonds to be listed on Oslo Børs as soon as practically possible. The net proceeds from the bond issue will be used for general corporate purposes.

AMSTERDAM (AFX) - Offshore drilling company Seadrill declined to comment on market speculation that it has approached the Dutch offshore drilling group SBM Offshore about a possible takeover.
A Seadrill company spokesperson said: "We don't comment on speculation. However, our ambition is, and always has been, to become one of the leading offshore drilling companies in a five-year time period, and I would stress offshore."
