    Nokia uit top 5 smartphone-verkopers door onze redactie
    Samsung en Apple blijven heer en meester op de smartphonemarkt. Samen hebben de bedrijven bijna de helft van de markt in handen. RIM, ZTE en HTC volgen op verre afstand, terwijl Nokia voor het eerst uit de top 5 is verdwenen. Dat blijkt uit cijfers die IDC gisteren heeft vrijgegeven.

    November 23 may have been known as "Black Friday." But it was a very bright and boisterous day for Nokia (NYSE: NOK ). According to Trip Chowdhry, the Managing Director of Equity Research at Global Equities Research, Nokia sold out of its flagship phone -- the Lumia 920 -- last Friday.

    "[The Lumia] 920 Windows 8 Phone on AT&T (NYSE: T ) was completely sold out by mid-day," Chowdhry wrote in a note to investors and reporters. He added that he was unable to get a converged view on the number of units each store received.

    As the world's second-largest manufacturer of mobile phones, this should not come as a great surprise to investors. But while the company performs well in emerging markets (where it can still sell a large number of feature phones), Nokia has been struggling to increase its sales of new smartphones. The Finnish manufacturer recently dropped to seventh place in worldwide smartphone sales as Samsung and Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL ) continue to rise.

    Regardless, Nokia has decided to stand by Windows . In August the company said that it would not abandon Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT ) mobile operating system for Google's (NASDAQ: GOOG ) Android platform.

    That decision seems to have paid off. One study showed that Nokia commands 59 percent of the Windows Phone market . If the company can maintain that dominance as the platform grows, it could one day prove to be a formidable competitor to Apple and Samsung. But investors remain concerned. Over the last 12 months, Nokia shares have lost more than 34 percent of their value.

    Nokia has a very real chance of becoming the world's third-largest manufacturer of smartphones. Research In Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM ), which all but created the smartphone market with the first BlackBerry, has spent the year dragging its feet. Instead of releasing BlackBerry 10 -- the next evolution to its mobile OS -- the company delayed its flagship product till 2013 and chose to focus on PlayBook upgrades for 2012. Investors still have faith in the firm's performance, however. Over the past three months, RIM shares have jumped nearly 70 percent. Year-to-date, the company is still down more than 25 percent.

    HTC (2498.TW), another Nokia rival, has had its own set of troubles. In addition to the declining revenue, HTC was reportedly not allowed to release a Windows 8 tablet when the OS launched on October 26. The Taiwan-based enterprise recently lost $40 million after OnLive closed its doors. (HTC was an investor in the company.) And while HTC had reportedly said that it would not settle its patent dispute with Apple, the company reversed its decision and settled the dispute . Terms of the settlement have not been disclosed, but HTC chief executive Peter Chou denied the claim that his company will pay Apple as much as $8 per smartphone.

    Year-to-date, HTC is down nearly 50 percent.

    Ik geloof het niet, het kan ook niet of Nokia wordt weer eens omlaag getrapt

    Van mij mag het deze week al knallen. KPN laat ik nog even rusten, ben niet zeker van de uitkomsten van de frequentieveiling. Dat gaat vermoedelijk veel geld kosten zonder dat het gelijk nieuwe omzet oplevert. Afgezien van overnamespeculatie zie ik nog even geen goed verdienmodel voor KPN. Koers staat natuurlijk erg laag, net als die van Nokia.

    Begin 2011 kondigden Nokia en Microsoft aan de handen ineen te slaan om het mobiele Windows Phone platform meer houvast te geven met behulp van Lumia-telefoons. Hoewel Nokia sindsdien exclusief Windows Phone 7, 7.5 en 8 toestellen aangekondigd heeft, zou het maar zo kunnen zijn dat het bedrijf zijn horizon binnenkort weer gaat verbreden. Dat suggereert althans een vacature van de Finse mobieltjesfabrikant die voor korte tijd online stond op het sociale netwerk LinkedIn.

    De vacature omschreef de ideale kandidaat als een vooraanstaande 'Software Engineer' met diepgaande kennis van 'Embedded Linux Middleware'. Ondanks deze vrij vage criteria zou een lijntje naar het besturingssysteem Android volgens Gizmodo het meest voor de hand liggen. De software van Microsoft is immers niet gebaseerd rondom Linux. Sommigen stellen dat de ontwikkelaar wellicht Nokia's eigen Linux-gebaseerde besturingssysteem met codenaam 'Meltemi' nieuw leven zou moeten inblazen, maar er gaan hardnekkige geruchten rond dat dat project juist in de ijskast gezet is na een recente bezuinigingsronde.

    Een eventuele andere mogelijkheid zou nog het in ontwikkeling zijnde Tizen OS zijn, dat voornamelijk een kindje is van Samsung en Intel. Mede daardoor zou het een opmerkelijke stap zijn indien Nokia zich daarin zou mengen. Ten slotte er is natuurlijk nog MeeGo, maar daarin zou Nokia naar verluidt zijn interesse inmiddels hebben verloren.

    De vacature sprak verder van een 'start-up environment' waarin gewerkt wordt aan de ontwikkeling van 'exciting new products' voor toekomstige 'mobile phone technology'. Of dat inderdaad betekent dat Nokia overweegt een Android-toestel te gaan maken, zal de toekomst moeten gaan uitwijzen. Het zou namelijk ook kunnen zijn dat het bedrijf op zoek is naar een developer voor het porteren van Nokia's Drive kaartapplicatie naar Android.

    We’ve seen 5 inch Nokia concepts, 4 inch models and many more formats, even tablets, but so far not so many with a diagonal size of the Galaxy S III, 4.8 inches. This time we get the Nokia N1000. This model features a 4.8 inch HD display, exactly like the Galaxy S III, I’m not sure what kind of technology is used here. Could it be AMOLED? SLCD? IPS TFT? LCD? PureMotion HD+ ClearBlack? We have no idea, but the designer promised more features will be unveiled soon. I imagine that this model features a quad core CPU, maybe a 20 MP camera and also an edge to edge screen.

    Nokia N1000 has a design that reminds me of the Lumia 800 and 900 and it seems to run Angry Birds Star Wars for some reason, although I don’t think that the game is available in the Nokia Store yet. The phone may look interesting, but seeing how big-bodied recent Nokias are, with a 4.8 inch display it’s probably the same size as a Galaxy Note II…

    China is de grootste markt wereldwijd voor Nokia's Lumia telefoons, die de Windows Phone-besturingssysteem te gebruiken, Stephen Elop, CEO van Nokia Corp, zei in Guangzhou op woensdag.
    Ongeveer een jaar geleden, Nokia haar eerste Lumia smartphone gelanceerd in China, Elop zei. Sindsdien Nokia Lumia zeven modellen geïntroduceerd op de Chinese markt.
    De Lumia apparaten zijn gestage groei van de omzet te zien in 35 markten wereldwijd, waaronder China, Elop zei.
    "China is en blijft een zeer belangrijke markt voor Nokia," Elop vertelde verslaggevers.
    Elop zei dat ongeveer 250 miljoen Chinezen Nokia-telefoons te gebruiken.
    Op woensdag Nokia introduceerde ook de eerste smartphone die de nieuwe Windows Phone 8-besturingssysteem draait - de Nokia Lumia 920T - die compatibel is met China Mobile TD-SCDMA 3G-netwerk.
