2009/2010 : TOTAL economic MELTDOWN

500 More Banks to Fail By End of 2010: Wilbur Ross CNBC.com 02 Sep 2009 The list of failed bank continues to grow as the FDIC’s troubled bank list currently stands at 416 troubled banks. Wilbur Ross, chairman and CEO of WL Ross & Co. explained that he expects to see further trouble ahead for banks. “I’m not surprised that the [FDIC’s] list is continuing to grow,” Ross told CNBC. “I think there’s going to be at least 500 more banks fail between now and end of next year.” Ross said commercial real estate is the currently the biggest problem for banks as opposed to residential. “The first wave of the big banks were the securitizations," he said. "The regional banks are the ones now going down. They mostly didn’t have much in the way of securitization but they all have construction loans, they have development loans, they all have loans on little shopping centers and they’ve got that kind of portfolio very heavily.” In the meantime, Ross said the FDIC recently developed a system to get rid of Alt-A loans through bidding and said investors can benefit from the distressed assets. “Yesterday, the FDIC held an auction for $1.3 billion of Alt-A loans, or liars loans, coming out of the failed Franklin Bank,” he said. “So that’s the first time FDIC has had an auction with them providing leverage to distressed investors. So we were bidders on it...I think it’s a good system that they’ve developed for getting rid of these assets.” URL: www.cnbc.com/id/32657466/

German, Italian Employers Warn of Credit Crunch GERMANY, ITALY, EMPLOYMENT, JOBS, CREDIT CRUNCH, ECONOMY, RECESSION Reuters 03 Sep 2009 05:11 AM ET There are worrying signs of a credit crunch developing in Germany and Italy and the European Union should take urgent action to loosen capital requirements for banks, German and Italian employers groups said on Thursday. In a joint letter to European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, who holds the rotating presidency of the European Council, Italy's Confindustria and Germany's BDI warned the signs for the second half of 2009 "are not reassuring." "This could have dramatic consequences for investments and employment in two of the European Union's largest economies," read the letter, which called for a change in the way lending risk was assessed to give businesses more access to credit.
End of Stimulus May Cause A 'Double-Dip' Recession: Gross CNBC.com | 02 Sep 2009 | 03:24 PM ET The inability of the government to continue pumping stimulus into the economy could promote a double-dip recession that will mean investment opportunities in longer-term government debt, Pimco's Bill Gross told CNBC. As inflation becomes less a possibility due to the weakening economy, 10-year notes and 30-year bonds could provide solid investment opportunities, Gross, CIO of the world's largest bond fund, said in a live interview. "To the extent that we have had a trillion dollars worth of stimulus, from the standpoint of deficits, and more, the government basically has to continue to do that and to add to that in order to keep the economy chugging along," he said. "To the extent that that's limited, to the extent that they pull back on some of those stimulus programs—Cash for Clunkers and those types of things—then the double-dip moves into the realm of possibility." A double-dip refers to a second leg down in the recession, which many economists say is ending. But Gross said the situation remains precarious in what his firm repeatedly has called the "new normal" of much slower growth rates than normal over an extended period of time. With another drop possible and continued deflation, he said 30-year bonds with a yield of 4.13 to 4.15 percent would become attractive. "If we have a slow-growth economy this in effect promotes a bull flattening for 10- and 30-year Treasurys," he said. Gross said investors will need to continue to watch the Federal Reserve for the central bank's future intent with regard to quantitative easing—the efforts to control interest rates and stimulate the economy. Fed minutes released Wednesday indicate its governors are conflicted over what should be done, he said. "As long as the Fed and other central banks keep policy rates low and as long as inflation doesn't rear its head ... intermediate and longer bonds do well," Gross said.

"The Worst of All Worlds": Don't Believe the Recovery Hype, Ortel Says Posted Sep 03, 2009 10:30am EDT by Aaron Task in Investing, Recession Enjoy the last days of summer and the Labor Day holiday because there is "abundant cause for concern," says Charles Ortel, managing director of Newport Value Partners, an independent research firm. A self-described optimist, Ortel nevertheless says the "worst of all worlds" is coming, characterized by falling asset prices and higher taxes, accompanied by a rising cost of core goods and services. Echoing the "stagflation" of the 1970s, he has coined the term "skew-flation" to describe what's ahead. As to growing consensus the global economy is on the mend, Ortel believes both government "macro" data and corporate "micro" data are painting a much rosier picture vs. actual reality. The real macro story, he says, is there's too much productive capacity around the world and not enough demand. At the same time, private sector incomes are down while debt levels are up. "We are still in the middle of systemic shock" and emergency government programs have temporarily kept the global economy on "life support," he says. "We think governments have little additional room left to continue to postpone the restructuring that's necessary around the world." Other causes for concern include: * A pending commercial real estate "meltdown" that will subject the banking system to another round of big losses. * A true accounting for the costs of government bailouts to date, even as state and local governments face a massive crisis of their own. He believes a day of reckoning is coming where foreigners will refuse to fund America's runaway deficits at today's very low rates. It's impossible to say when these issues manifest themselves in the market but Ortel says, yes, investors should beware the ides of September-October. finance.yahoo.com/tech-ticker/article... ,^GSPC,SPY,DIA,XLF,EEM,FXI
