Steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal today (Nov 05) asked investors not to be perturbed by the fall in valuation of ArcelorMittal saying he is the largest stakeholder and is interested in creating more wealth for shareholders. www.tradingmarkets.com/.site/news/Sto...
Investing in Steel: Just Plain Good Sense When are the valuations right? Excluding intangibles, the book value of ArcelorMittal was $46.5 billion at the end of 2007; it is expected to be around $49.1 billion at the end of 2008. That is somewhere between $33 and $35 per share. The share trades at $21 presently. Since the market is not trading on valuation or fundamentals, the price could go down considerably further. For a long term investor, the yield of 7.1% more than protects the downside risk. My assessment of the fair value of the company is $60. At its peak during the next economic cycle, exuberance can lead to a bobble price of around $160 per share.
China announces $586 billion stimulus plan The statement said the spending would focus on 10 areas. They included picking up the pace of spending on low-cost housing -- an urgent need in many parts of the country -- as well as increased spending on rural infrastructure. Money will also be poured into new railways, roads and airports. Spending on health and education will be increased, as well as on environmental protection and high technology. ArcelorMittal Warns of Layoffs at Indiana Plant LONDON -(Dow Jones)- ArcelorMittal (MT), the world's largest steelmaker, warned that as many as 2,444 employees at its Burns Harbor steel plant in Indiana could be laid off indefinitely in January. The company said in a prepared statement that it has notified the United Steel Workers union and other stakeholders "about the potential for an indefinite layoff" of employees at its U.S. steel works facility starting from the second half of January 2009. The cutbacks are in response to weaker steel demand in the key automotive, construction and appliance industries around the world, which has led the company to reduce its global production by 35% in the fourth quarter. ArcelorMittal has reduced production in North America by 40%, the company said in the statement. "Potential workforce reductions are a direct result of the extraordinary economic environment we are facing and the company hopes to return workers to their jobs as market conditions warrant," the statement said. Burns Harbor employs about 4,000 hourly and salaried workers and is able to produce 4.7 million tons of steel annually. A USW spokesman said the union is negotiating with ArcelorMittal to minimize the layoffs. DJ Output Cuts Clear Way For Next Commodities Boom - Investor DJ Output Cuts Clear Way For Next Commodities Boom - Investor MELBOURNE (Dow Jones)--The production cuts miners are making in response to slumping prices are sowing the seeds of the next commodities boom that will see prices soar to new record highs, prominent mining investment manager Evy Hambro of BlackRock Inc. (BLK) said Tuesday. Hambro, who manages the BlackRock World Mining Fund, describes the collapse in prices and the resulting plunge of mining stocks as "100 days of hell" but says it is a short-term dip in a long-term uptrend driven by demand from the developing world. With about US$50 billion worth of spending on new mining projects canceled already, financing for new projects difficult to obtain and deep production cuts being announced, Hambro said the market was set to be supply constrained when demand returned. "The mining sector today is really sowing the seeds of the next bull market," he told reporters in Melbourne. "We will see the sector in shortage when demand recovers and this will obviously be a pretty explosive environment for prices." When demand does return, Hambro believes prices will not only match but exceed their previous highs. "Every cycle in the past has resulted in new highs for commodity prices so I see no reason why we won´t get back there over time," he said. Hambro will not be drawn on when he believes the market will turn around, but in the case of iron ore he points out that the world´s biggest steelmaker ArcelorMittal (MT) has said it plans to start turning capacity back on in three months. "I think that tells you how long they think it is going to take to work through their inventories and stockpiles so some time around then is probably pretty good guidance," he said. The sell off of mining stocks now has most trading well below the replacement value of their assets, and Hambro said this is likely to spark a rash of mergers and acquisitions once the credit crisis is over and miners can obtain finance for deals. "With valuations as low as they are today, we do expect to see M&A rearing its head when credit markets start to thaw."
Gerrit
