Verwarrend bericht imo...

New target for medicine to combat Alzheimer's: VIB scientists confirm protein's key role Alzheimer's disease Two thirds of all patients with dementia suffer from Alzheimer's disease. Estimates indicate that by 2010 our country will have more than 150,000 Alzheimer's patients. Alzheimer's is a disease that gradually destroys brain cells, with the result that the mental capacity of patients with Alzheimer's gradually declines. At first, memory begins to fail, but the patient's cognitive capabilities also deteriorate as the disease progresses. Today, this disease cannot yet be cured. Current medicines for Alzheimer's patients sustain the memory functions for a short time, but they are unable to stop the brain cells from dying off. At best, they are able to limit the loss of memory during the early phases of the disease. The β-amyloid cascade The brains of Alzheimer's patients typically show the presence of amyloid plaques, which are abnormal accumulations of a protein (β-amyloid) between the neurons. The sticky β-amyloid develops when the precursor protein (amyloid precursor protein or APP) is cut into pieces incorrectly. GPR3: target for new medicine Several years ago, Bart De Strooper and other researchers elucidated the way in which these plaques originate and discovered that secretases play a large role in this process. Now, under the direction of Bart De Strooper, and in collaboration with researchers from the biotech company Galapagos, Amantha Thathiah and her colleagues have investigated whether additional substances are also involved in the development of the plaques. Which is apparently the case: Galapagos has identified the GPR3 protein as a new player. The VIB researchers have been able to show − in vitro (in cells isolated and studied in the laboratory) as well as in vivo (in living animals − mice, in this instance) − that blocking GPR3 leads to reduction of the plaques. Importance of this research The GPR3 protein is an important target molecule for the eventual development of a new medicine against Alzheimer's disease. The majority of all of the medicines that are available in pharmacies − regardless of the disease that they work against − act on proteins of a specific type. GPR3 is one of these − which, at this time, cannot be said for any other protein implicated in Alzheimer's. Further research and development of this medicine will be carried out by the Flemish biotechnology company Galapagos. It is possible that 'the cure for Alzheimer's' will never be able to restore a patient's memory − but, hopefully, the disorder can be arrested, saving as many brain cells as possible.esciencenews.com/articles/2009/02/12/... combat.alzheimers.vib.scientists.confirm.proteins.key.role

Special item (login required) Pharmaceutical & Biotechnology: Top Picks 2009: Harvest Time is near, 05/02/2009 More than ever, big pharma is looking for biotechs that can provide new life blood (next generation products). We believe that the following Top Picks (Antisoma, Genmab, MediGene, Crucell and NicOx companies) will profit the most from the current M&A activity in the biotech sector. Full story...

aossa, kijk even in je IVpm-box.
Zie ook road-show acties ...

Galapagos Full Year Results 2008 Welcome to the webcast presentation of Galapagos’ Full Year Results 2008. On Friday, March 6th at 10.00 CET Onno van de Stolpe, CEO of Galapagos, and Leo Steenbergen, CFO of Galapagos, will present Galapagos' results for the full year 2008. This presentation will be followed by a Q&A session. To participate in the Q&A session, please call +32-2290-1791, ten minutes prior to commencement of this presentation.pulse.companywebcast.nl/playerv1_0/de... SNS Flash note 5 March 2009 Preview FY2008 Financial results The facts: Galapagos will report FY08 results before markets open Friday 6 March. In a trading update published n the 28th of January of this year, Galapagos released preliminary results for the year 2008. Revenues increased by 17% to EUR 77m. This result is in line with our own estimates of EUR 77m. Alliance income and the BioFocus DPI positive result contributed to a year end cash balance of EUR 27m in 2008, EUR 2m higher than our estimates. Galapagos’ guidance for 2009 are EUR 100m group revenues and a year-end cash balance of EUR 20 m. See for detailed estimates the table on the next page. Our analysis: Because the preliminary results are in line with our expectations we do not expect any large changes in valuation for the upcoming results which will be presented on Friday. Galapagos has a substantial clinical pipeline with one Phase II and two Phase I studies scheduled in 2009. Early 2009 clinical trails are expected to start in Phase I of its product GT418 against in rheumatoid arthritis. Galapagos’ partner Janssen Pharmaceutica NV., has the option to in license this product in a later stage if development continues to be successful till Phase IIa. Furthermore in January of 2009 Galapagos announced the discovery of a human drug target that plays a key role in Alzheimer’s disease of which an U.S. patent has been granted. In our opinion this discovery could lead to potential new alliances or partnerships including possible milestone payments for future development. For the year as a whole we expect that BioFocus DPI will be profitable again after it took the necessary cost saving measures. BioFocus DPI extended its long-term collaborations with Amgen, Lilly, and Merck Serono and signed multiple new agreements. Conclusion & Action: The trading update did not show any surprises. Although its cash position by the end of this year seems to be tight taking into consideration the projected expenses of EUR 7.6m for 2009, Galapagos will reduced cash burn with a more mature and costly pipeline compared to expenses in 2008. Furthermore we do expect milestone payment from its partners as well as a possible deal in bone metastasis and possibly Alzheimer’s disease. We believe that the company will raise additional capital once market sentiment has improved. The company already proved in the past to successfully raise capital when opportunity arose. We therefore maintain our BUY recommendation and price target of EUR 12.
(AVM)www.iex.nl/nieuws/nieuws_artikel.asp?...
