HANNOVER, Germany (Thomson Financial) - The German steel trade association Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahl expects domestic steel production to increase to 47.5-48 mln tonnes this year, up from 47.2 mln tonnes in 2006, said the head of the association, Dieter Ameling. Worldwide, steel production is forecast to grow by 6 pct in both 2007 and 2008 to 1.18 bln tonnes and 1.25 bln tonnes respectively, he said. Ameling said that a large part of the future growth will be attributed to China. 'China has increased its steel exports rather then reduce them as it had promised to do,' Ameling commented, adding that last year 15 pct of China's steel exports were delivered to Europe mvrgr jo jo

Steelmakers May Pay Record Iron Ore Prices Till 2013 (Update1) By Tan Hwee Ann April 16 (Bloomberg) -- Steelmakers may keep paying record iron ore prices until 2013 because Cia. Vale do Rio Doce and rival mining companies can't meet surging demand from China, Credit Suisse Group says. Prices of the key steelmaking ingredient may rise 10 percent next year and 3.2 percent in 2009, analysts Roger Downey and Ivan Fadel said in an April 13 report. They may stay at a record until a forecast 7 percent fall in 2013, it said. China overtook Japan as the largest buyer of iron ore in 2003 as its economic expansion fuels the making of cars, buildings and appliances. Prices have risen for the past five years, helping Brazil's Vale, Rio Tinto Group and BHP Billiton Ltd. to post record profits and spend billions on expansion. ``All the announced projects by majors will be insufficient and we expect further expansions by majors and by new entrants,'' said Downey and Fadel. ``There will be continued growth in iron ore demand post 2010.'' New capacity expansion will be more costly, and drive up long-term iron ore prices to $40 a ton, the report said. Iron ore prices from Vale, the world's largest exporter of the ingredient, rose 9.5 percent to $44.47 a ton this year. Shares of BHP Billiton, rose 41 cents, or 1.4 percent, to A$30.26 on the Australian Stock Exchange, and Rio Tinto rose A$1.54, or 1.9 percent, to A$83.74 at 2:38 p.m. Sydney time. Most analysts had been predicting iron ore prices would either fall or stay unchanged in 2008, expecting miners to catch up with demand. That's changed in the past two months amid signs China's demand may be greater than expected. `Continued Growth' China would require an additional 260 million metric tons to 270 million metric tons of iron ore to feed steelmakers by 2010, the analysts said. Mining companies, including new projects from MMX Mineracao e Metalicos SA, will add 190 million tons by then, they said. New projects may also be delayed, Credit Suisse said. MMX, which is controlled by Brazilian billionaire Eike Batista, is investing $3.6 billion to build mines. BHP Billiton on March 23 said it will spend $2.2 billion expanding mines, and rival Rio in February approved a $860 million expansion of an iron ore port. Australia and Brazil each account for about 36 percent of global iron ore exports, followed by India as the third-largest exporter with a 14 percent market share, Citigroup Inc. has said. Rising Prices The Credit Suisse analysts raised their iron ore prices estimates for the 12 months from April 1 2008 to a 10 percent gain, from a 5 percent rise, as China increased imports more than estimated. Cyclones in Australia, where BHP and Rio have their mines, India's export tax on iron ore, and delays in projects will also strengthen the bargaining powers of miners, they said. Goldman Sachs JBWere Pty., Deutsche Bank AG, and UBS AG in the past month raised their iron ore prices for next year. Goldman expects iron ore to gain 5 percent, instead of a 10 percent fall. Deutsche Bank expects the commodity to rise 10 percent, instead of a 5 percent decline. UBS expects a 10 percent gain, up from unchanged. Chinese steel production could rise by 17 percent in 2007, which would send the global iron ore market into a one percent deficit, Credit Suisse said. Baoshan Iron & Steel Co., China's largest steelmaker, said in January it expects steel-product output to rise 10 percent to 23 million tons in 2007, and wants to more than double that to at least 50 million tons by 2012. mvrgr jo jo

Steel Industry Expected to Shine into 2008 Experts predict the world steel industry will continue to boom into 2008 as demand continues to skyrocket in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Central and South America. The International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) said Sunday that world-wide steel demand is expected to reach 1,18 billion tons this year, up 5.9 percent from the previous year, and that demand in 2008 should increase another 6.1 percent to 1.25 billion tons. Global demand for steel grew 8.5 percent in 2006. According to the study "Short Range Outlook for Apparent Steel Demand 2007-2008" on the IISI's website, a particularly strong positive trend is expected for the next two years in Africa, Asia and South America. Domestic steel makers including POSCO and Hyundai Steel should benefit. Park Sang-kyu, an analyst with Hyundai Securities, said, "The global steel market which was sluggish is now bullish due to strong demand. It will work in favor of the domestic steel industry." english.chosun.com/w21data/html/news/...
Salzgitter CEO Leese says Q1 result was better than expected UPDATE 04.17.07, 10:54 AM ET (updates to add that Salzgitter may raise its full year guidance next month) SALZGITTER, Germany (Thomson Financial) - Salzgitter AG chief executive Wolfgang Leese told journalists in Hanover that the company's first-quarter result was better than it had expected. 'The first quarter went well, better than we initially anticipated,' Leese told journalists. He declined to provide any concrete financial details of the company's performance. Germany's second largest steel maker is scheduled to issue its first-quarter financial figures on May 15. The chief executive also hinted that Salzgitter could raise its full-year outlook when it releases first quarter results. 'It looks a bit more positive,' Leese said. The company said last month it expects full-year sales to exceed 2006's 8.45 bln eur level. Salzgitter also said it does not expect full-year pretax profit to match last year's 1.85 bln eur total because of divestitures. mvrgr jo jo

Kooporder Arcelor Mittal 38,25 opgegeven. Steel prices are increasing briskly By Tom Stundza -- 4/18/2007 7:56:00 AM ADVERTISEMENT Cement prices will increase slowly ETF reports send platinum price skywards Analysts: Second-half coal will cost more More >> Sheet steel prices have moved upward from $508/ton in February and probably will be around $600 June—which won’t be as high as the $640/ton the mills have targeted. The analysts have been forecasting as high as $600 in May based on what Aldo Mazzaferro of Goldman Sachs in New York pins to “short supply, rising global prices and a lack of imports.” Actually, he and other analysts suggested that April transactions on hot-rolled steel sheet would fall within a wide range of $540 to $580 per ton and elevate to a span of $580 to $600 in May. In contrast, Purchasingdata.com projected a sales-price average at $555 in April, rising to $580 in May. In reality, the average calculated for April deliveries in the latest survey of buyers at manufacturing plants and processing distributors is $555 as higher scrap prices indeed are pushing steel prices upward. However, early buys for deliveries in May have averaged $590/ton, or $10 over the original Purchasingdata.com estimate. The sales prices for April and May may have been skewed somewhat by a thin market. North American demand has been anemic all year and many end-user and service center buyers have remained on the sidelines with more than enough inventory. “Second quarter demand remains soft in the timeframe that typically is the year's strongest quarter,” says analyst Timna Tanners at UBS Securities in New York. And, given soft market conditions, she writes in a note to clients, “many buyers may believe the recent rebound for hot-rolled coil pricing is undeserved.” Still, higher offshore prices—averaging $600 in Europe—continue to discourage imports into the U.S. market. “Demand in other global regions is very strong, and there are higher prices there compared to the US market,” says Mazzaferro. “Those are the major reasons for the import-supply reductions in the U.S.”

Ik koop onder de 38.If and when. kck
HSBC lifts rating on Rio Tinto, citing higher iron ore prices, demand ahead Source: Associated Press See alsoIron Ore Board Iron Ore CatalogShares of Rio Tinto plc rose modestly in afternoon trading following an HSBC analyst upgrade that cited expectations of higher iron ore prices. The stock added 50 cents to $255.26 on the New York Stock Exchange. HSBC Global Research analyst Paul McTaggart lifted his rating on Australia-based Rio Tinto to "Overweight" from "Neutral." Iron ore is mostly used to make steel, which is used in construction. Prices of the raw material are likely to jump 10 percent in 2008, due to increased Chinese steel production, said McTaggart. He also boosted his price expectations for nickel and copper. "The combination of critically low stock levels plus supply issues is likely to result in a volatile nickel price at average levels higher than we anticipated," wrote McTaggart. The analyst also expects Rio Tinto to expand its share buyback program at the end of the year. The company mines iron, copper, uranium, industrial minerals, aluminium, gold, diamonds and more.
