    Ebola Vaccine Holds Promise for Protection in Humans

    Leiden, The Netherlands, August 07, 2003 – In an article published in Nature 1 this week, test results have shown that a new Ebola vaccine gives macaque monkeys 100% protection from the Ebola virus with a single dose. Scientists at the Vaccine Research Center (VRC), part of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and scientists from the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) carried out the research. The vaccine is a prototype adenoviral vaccine, which is made by inserting a portion of Ebola virus DNA into an adenovirus, the virus that causes the common cold. The results suggest that humans may be protected by a single vaccine injection.

    Crucell entered into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with the NIH in 2002 to jointly develop an Ebola vaccine for human use. Currently Crucell is producing the experimental vaccine for testing in human trials on its proprietary PER.C6™ production platform. Crucell's PER.C6™ technology makes large-scale production of the vaccine possible.

    Gunstige resultaten van een experimenteel Ebola vaccin

    Leiden, The Netherlands, August 07, 2003 – Nature presenteert deze week onderzoeksresultaten 1 van een nieuw Ebola vaccin dat rhesus apen 100% beschermt tegen Ebola na een enkele injectie. Wetenschappers aan het Vaccine Research Centre (VRC), onderdeel van het National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), van het Amerikaanse National Institutes of Health (NIH) werkten hierbij samen met wetenschappers van het United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID). Het prototype vaccin is gemaakt door een stuk van het Ebola virus DNA in te brengen in een adenovirus, het virus dat een onschuldige verkoudheid veroorzaakt. Deze resultaten suggereren dat mensen beschermd kunnen worden door vaccinatie met een enkele injectie.

    Crucell werkt samen met het NIH om een Ebola vaccin voor de mens te ontwikkelen. Op dit moment produceert Crucell het experimentele vaccin op haar PER.C6 TM productie platform voor klinische studies in mensen. De PER.C6 TM technologie maakt het produceren van vaccines op grote schaal mogelijk.
