NISSAN has revealed details of the new 24 kilowatt-hour battery to be installed in its Leaf electric car.

Hold your hats. Each battery will contain 4kg of lithium, according to New York-based scientific consultants Gerson Lehrman Group. The planned production numbers of the Leaf means that just under 10 per cent of the world’s production of lithium will be snapped up by Nissan.

Now, while many sometimes fears that it is getting paranoid on the subject of China locking up control of key minerals, you can’t say the same thing about Time, right? The US newsmagazine has an article in its issue dated August 31 headlined “Electric Cars: China’s Power Play”.

It points out that China already makes more lithium-ion batteries than any other country, and these batteries are the fundamental key to electric car technology. What the article shows is that the Chinese thrust into electric cars is coming, not so much from the auto companies (although they are keen enough), but from Chinese battery makers. It cites the example of Shenzhen-based BYD company which was a maker of batteries, mainly for mobile phones. But in 2003 the company moved into the auto business and last December started selling the F3DM, a hybrid car selling for $US22,000 which is propelled by a battery recharged by an internal petrol-fuelled generator.

So watch lithium. With electric cars coming, the world will all of this mineral it can gets its hands on.

The REE group is considered to include the 15 lanthanide elements: lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, promethium (does not occur naturally), neodymium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, and lutetium. The elements yttrium and scandium are also included as they have similar chemical properties, making 17 REEs in total. The resource and market details refer to REEs in the oxide form and the group is collectively discussed as Rare Earth Oxides (REO).

China investors to fund Australian lithium projectSeptember 4, 2009 1:09 AM ET

SHANGHAI (AP) - Australian startup Galaxy Resources Ltd. has sold a 19.9 percent stake to a Chinese investment company as part of a financing agreement for mining and processing of lithium, a metal used in electric vehicle batteries.

The 159 million Australian dollar ($133 million) funding agreement includes the equity purchase in Galaxy, worth AU$29 million ($24 million), and AU$130 million of debt financing, Galaxy said in a statement issued Friday.

It will fund mining and processing in Ravensthorpe, Western Australia, and construction of a lithium carbonate chemical factory in Zhangjiagang, near Shanghai, it said.

The gas engine made petroleum the world's biggest commodity. The electric car could do the same for the third element on the periodic table.

Nothing grows in the heart of the Salar de Atacama. this ancient Chilean lake bed 700 miles north of Santiago may be the driest place on Earth, a wasteland strewed with salt-encrusted rocks that resemble cow pies. Annual rainfall on the salar (which in Spanish means "salt lake") rarely tops a few millimeters. The cloudless skies combine with the high altitude, 1.4 miles above sea level, to produce punishing solar radiation, capable of frying exposed flesh in minutes.

    Galaxy Resources (GXY) $2.04

FORGET about iron ore, rare earths or even gold: the real flyer at the moment is any stock with an exposure to lithium.

Lithium is in hot demand as China turns to electric cars and scooters in a serious way.

Lithium has applications in ceramics, glass manufacturing, lubricants and treating depression, but it's demand for lithium-ion batteries which has got investors excited in the last couple of weeks.

According to Galaxy chief Iggy Tan, lithium demand is expected to soar from 100,000 tonnes currently to 300,000t by 2020. And there isn't a lot of new supply coming on.

Galaxy is in pole position with its Mt Cattlin resource at Ravensthorpe in Western Australia, which the company claims to be the world's second-biggest hard rock lithium deposit.

The company this morning announced a small deal to acquire an 80 per cent interest in Traka Resources nearby ground, thus extending Galaxy's resource base and enhancing the viability of Mt Cattlin.

Galaxy is backed by Chinese tycoon Zheng Yuewen, who has taken a $26 million, 19.9 per cent Galaxy stake. He's also committed $130 million of debt funding to the project, which would also involve a processing plant at the China end to produce 17,000 tonnes of battery grade lithium carbonate annually.

Galaxy hopes to be producing in a year's time, which -- dare we say -- sounds an ambitious timetable.

“We are the next project to get up and running,'' Tan says. “The others are well behind us and the industry is going to get short (of lithium) again.

The bad news for investors is that Galaxy's share price has already had a decent run (up 150 per cent over the last two months).

Still, Galaxy's $150 million market cap is defensible and it's one to hold on to for the demise of the carbon economy.

Western Lithium Commences Additional Drilling in Nevada to Support Long Term Lithium Carbonate Production

RENO, NEVADA--(Marketwire - Sept. 9, 2009) - Western Lithium Corporation (TSX VENTURE:WLC) has commenced drilling on the Stage II clay lens of its Kings Valley, Nevada lithium property. The purpose of this drilling is to determine if additional years of National Instrument 43-101 compliant mine life can be added to the proposed project. According to the original Chevron data, the Stage II lens is approximately seven times larger than Stage I lens, so only a portion of the lens will be drilled at this time.
